Something interesting I learned with the Frankenstein monster in the 40s is that in official color posters or photos his skin isn’t green, it’s a pale yellow
The main reason people think the monster is green was because Jack Pierce used green greasepaint on Karloff to give him an unnatural appearance on B&W film. Had the film been made in color, the yellow would have been more realistic, giving it a sickly pallor like bruised flesh.
His skin is also yellow in the novel.
Colorized Universal Monster films look interesting in color. But, honestly, I still prefer the black and white prints. More nostalgic and mythical.
It makes since considered the creature’s skin is translucent yellow in the novel.
I’ve always thought the monster’s skin would be grey. I’ll soon be reading the book for the first time; I borrowed it from the public library.
What a difference between BW and color. Bela Lugosi’s Dracula still looks creepy even color. Brilliantly done.
I bought the invisible man steelbook is there option for colour
The first scene with Lugosi where he grimaces, he looks like he crapped his pants, that's why he's grimacing
I'm glad these colorized snippets seem pretty accurate to the time period (especially the Bride's REAL hair color). It also shows the true genius of these makeup designs, which is of course due to mainly Jack Pierce, the grandfather of makeup alongside Lon Chaney. Even in color, they all look great and honestly, the color doesn't take away from the old masks and makeup at all.
We all clearly love the original black and white films. But this was a real treat. Nicely done.
If they had color back then they would have used it. I am 70 and those old films looked like crap. Thanks to colorization we can get an idea what they could have been.
This is totally awesome
@@danstvguy a lot of them had the option to do color, it was just extremely expensive to do a colored film at the time, a dollar per second of film, that may not sound like much but consider the fact that on average each movie is at least an hour long, that's an extra 3600 dollars just for it to be a color film, and then you also have consider that it's 3600 old dollars, imagine how much that is today
Yeah i still love the Monsters in black and white but surprisingly this was okay but at the same time I will watch the Monsters in black and white any day.
I like black and white better.
This could help make more modern audiences give the old Universal Monsters a chance. As a long time fan, this is incredible!
Screw them if they need color. These films belong to us!
Whoever did this is a genius. The colourization is literally perfect. Especially Creature from the Black Lagoon.
I love the black and white versions but the color versions absolutely bring them to life and make them feel so much closer to our age. I love it!
Bride's grayish skintone is great, would love to see same for the Monster.
The Creature...wow.
Agreed regarding the Monster’s coloring- the green is too much. But love the Bride- the red hair looks great and is evidently accurate!
The Monster was NEVER green . Jack Pierce clearly stated the the Monster was a Steel Grey color. The green is something that people imagined. Even in the book, he is described as having Yellowish translucent skin.
@@Valkonnen Karloff's makeup was green but there was a good reason for that. When filmed in black and white, it gave the monster a very pale look.
I've never liked when later versions of it would show him as green. It's almost like they think that's how they wanted him to look.
I always thought the green was too silly. The guys made of decomposing body parts, I think a pale grey tone would be more accurate (like we see with the Bride) than make him a weird version of the Hulk
@@Mycroft9 :: I really love black&white ( gray ) movies, no matter what the theme. The Bride of Frank is not only the best horror-film, it's one of the greatest films ever ... Lanchester was beautiful in the black&white version, but in color, she was even more striking.
As cool as it is to see these clips in colour, I think it really shows how adept these filmmakers were at working with the medium of black and white. The clips are a lot more moody and gothic in their original monochrome, it works so well tonally.
Absolutely beautiful,i wish we could see them in full length in color..
I've never seen such good colorized work. I would love to see these movies in color.
Yes!
I have loved the old black and white monster movies since I was a child....but these are amazing! Well done!
Creature could be a little bit greener.
It's a religious experience
"Well... we warned you."
Okay, that was just brilliant!
I wish universal would actually release these films like this. It adds so much life, and these films could reach a new audience
If that put time and money into it it could look even better. Have them as double bills as many are only a bit over an hour long.
I wish Universal would release the Universal Monster Verse in color on a DVD box set see those classics in color is like night and day it brings these classics to life ❤️
As much as I love the original black and white, your work on these shows how fantastic classic monsters in color could be. I never want to lose the originals, but I'd love to add full length colorized versions of these to my collection!
Me 2!
I think they should make them in color but keep the black and whites available to anybody who prefers the original versions. But damn this was amazing and breathes new life into the classics
Perhaps a dvd or Blu ray where you could choose to either watch them in color or black and white.
@@aroncox7705 that’s the best way to do it. Give people options in the settings.
@@aroncox7705 They've done that with 3 Stooges! :) You can watch the shorts in color or the original black and white.
"to anybody who prefers the originals"
You make it seem like fans of the originals would be in the minority. Believe me, people who prefer their classic monsters colorised are the ones who are in the minority.
@@eviltom17 The Little Rascals too.
Man, I would definitively rewatch all these classics in colour, they look great
Seeing these in colour makes them new again. Very nice! Pretty good SFX too, for movies from 70 to nearly 100 years ago.
Now I wanna rewatch all these movies on color. Just watched Dracula last night in black & white
WOW! I AM...speechless. Thank you for this amazing treat.
4:17 So, Count Orlok makes his appearance.
Best for last as they say.
I feel like I just witnessed the greatest homage to the history of horror cinema I have ever seen. Astonishing.
Great job!
"Frankenstein" and the "Creature" look especially great. Excellent job!
Creature should have been in color. Also, seeing Erick the Phantom in color!! Thank you for this.
The scene with the Frankenstein monster and Maria at the lake looked particularly good. It looked as if it could have been filmed yesterday. Colorization has come a long way.
I became aware of the Universal monsters in 1963 when I was five years old. I have been watching them, on film, since I was seven---when my mother finally deemed me old enough to see them. All of the scenes you have included here have been long familiar to me, but the colorization makes them so much sharper and more immediate---especially that most heartbreaking and gutwrenching scene so brilliantly performed by Boris Karloff and Marilyn Harris. And bookending the whole video with Van Sloan's speech from the Prologue of Frankenstein was a brilliantly amusing touch. Thank you for posting this wonderful artwork.
I love the classic black and white. That said colorizing them would bring new life into these movies
This is AMAZING. Thank you!
I grew up watching the black and whites and I love them, if they made them in color would I buy them? yes that looked good, I was really surprised how good some of them looked
"Some of them" ? Name them ! Karloff as the Monster becomes clownish after this process, his Bride isn't better, Mr Hyde (Fredric March) seems nauseous, etc.
That was a blast from the past. Thank you 😊💓
I think I always wondered how the Universal Classic Movie Monsters look in color.
Love to see these entire colorized movies in a modern movie theatre.
Maybe all of them in a marathon.
This is just amazing. We need these films in color once and for all !
Very well done! You know, I was always sure the Frankenstein monster wasn't green, but a ghastly yellowish white, and the creature appears whitish in this video. I'm so glad you included the original Phantom of the Opera and Nosferatu. Both great films!
LOVE THIS. Bernard Herrmman was perfect music choise.!
Yes! Bernard's "VERTIGO" theme 🎵🎶 from Hitchcock's thriller is an added dimension to the overall effect !
All I can say is WOW!! Seeing these classic monsters in color brings a new depth to the films. I so wish all these classics would get the colorization treatment. Which could.bring future generations to appreciate these well loved films.
Wow these colors are insane! Makes everything so spooky yet really cool, I love how they created everything like this even though it was shown in black and white. I guess black and white really suits frankensteins feeling.
The Universal Horrors are awesome. I can't believe how scary Frankenstein and his Bride and Dracula are in color!! Audiences in the 1940s wouldn't have been able to watch them!!
Boris as the Mummy , fantastic .
It looks even creepier in color!
First let me say how much I hate how people use the word “amazing” so often…but….THIS WAS AMAZING! I love these old movies and watch them whenever I can….if there was a whole week were they played one of these colorized movies at a local theater every day, I would go the entire week to see them all. Popcorn and a coke every day….The music played during this added to the allure of these snippets. Thank you…..
This is as spot on as it gets. I feel like Frankenstein could be slightly less green and the saturation on the scar isnt real realistic, but otherwise everything else seems perfect!
You’re not going to get spot on coloring. Film back then was different and interpreted colors much differently. Colorized film of that era was over saturated, look at Wizard of Oz. That movie is colorful as hell
I thought about it. To have a green monster it would be best to colorize in the aesthetic of Mario Bava. THE rest of the scenery should be impressionistic in use of colour. Kill Baby Kill or Argentino's Inferno. (Mario Bava did set design and lighting etc). The movie ultimately looks best in black and white but the green Frankenstein is great to see.
I always find it amusing how many people think the Frankenstein monster is supposed to be green when in fact the real reason he was painted with green makeup was the unnatural appearance it gave him in the B&W filmstock. In my opinion, had the film been made in color a more realistic look would have been a pale yellowish tan, like bruised flesh.
@@lordpuki1375 I agree, he's not the Incredible Hulk or something. So much more effective in b&w.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Ironically, The Hulk is only green because the printer couldn't make him consistently gray.
The original, classic monster movies those were done beautifully with the color added just a beautifully done job. The music too really gives off a great sense of the atmosphere.
i love the colorized ones they are great
Black Lagoon looks incredible in colour!
Seeing one of my all-time favourite characters, The Gillman, in colour, is a real treat
Dwight Fry looked terrifying! I love it!
Love this. Very nice work.
This looks really good because you gave your color the tones that it would have had if they did film it in color in their time periods. - Creature looked especially great. thanX for not giving it red lips! :D
Now that's a true horror masterpiece. Great work. Just truly appreciate the hard work on all those classics.
Perfection! And the transformation of Dr. Jekyll to Hyde is just remarcable for its time and even today!
LOOKS GOOD!! Colorizing classic films like this that are very well done only enhances these movies as far as I'm concerned! WELL DONE!!
I've somehow, amazingly, never heard of Mad Love-need to watch that pronto.
I recognized Clips from Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Wolfman, Werewolf of London, Mad Love, Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and the Creature From the Black Lagoon.
Do you recognize the monster at 2:11
You can quickly see nosferatu also included in the clips.
Utterly magic 🌟🌟🌟
I would totally love watching these old horror films in color. Thank you for sharing. :)
A dream come true all these films being shown colorized could bring on a new audiences to watch these films again and audience will always seen these will watch one more time, please bring these films back in color a new experience.
A million times better in black and white.
the background music is amazing. I imagine an author writing a horror story.
That a great treat seeing ur favorite universal classic monsters in colour
Stella. I would buy these films, if they were colorized like this.
All the characters & background scenes are absolutely fantastic !
This is brilliant! I wish the entire films were re-dune this way. The Creature looked particularly lifelike.
I've seen them all since the 70's in B&W ,I say re release them all in color ASAP woiuld like very much to see them at lease once that way
I concur with everybody, it's an absolute treat to see these classic monsters in color. As some one else just commented, it seems to work best on "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," which truly does look amazing. Love this stuff!!!
Haha that little Nosferatu clip at the end with the note it ends on
I LOVE the color version!
Not only is the colorization perfect, the images are crisper too.
Wow wonderful in color!
Love the Bernard Herrmann music! The Invisible Man is my favorite!
Excellent to see what the old classics in B/W would have looked like in color. Awesome
Nice touch with the theme from "Vertigo". Great job with the colors...Mr Hyde and the phantom are more gruesome than ever!
Some of the OGs of Universal
I like them better in color. They should release them on dvd like that.
Super cool looking in color, would be awesome seeing these films colorized like this.
Awesome redefining colorizations, haunting and beautiful and totally unforgettable.
Great job! These were fun to watch... and rewatch!
This is insane especially the frankenstein outside with the lil girl and the creature
The transformation of dr Jekyll is fantastic
The Creature from black lagoon would look fantastic in color
Your content is golden. What a great job you did. Thank You
The creature in 3-D color would be incredible ! Dr. Barry at Legend please convince Universal to convert there now 4K data !!
Love the old black and white versions, but these are fantastic. So we can the best of both worlds. Nicely done!
Now I want to see them in color!
Love the old black and white, but I think it's been long enough, this would be awesome
SIMPLY FANTASTIC! Thanks from am old monster kid
The way you bookended these clips was brilliant!
Nice work!! Lugosi looks more menacing in color.
Whoa! I want to rewatch them all like this!
Awesome! Thanks for posting this.
I always catch myself rewatching this video, always a great watch, awesome job on it
These Clips are Fantastic.
This is some great colourisation.
They look great!!
Wow just incredible. Pure ART. I have never seen these films in such high resolution quality, let alone colour. I would prefer to watch this era of horror movies than current horror films anyday.
pure old school greatness...
Excellent work! Universal should colorize these in an attempt to reach a younger generation. I really enjoyed this clip! Thanks.
The "younger generation" is maybe less stupid than you. These movies were made before my birth, so I was young when I discovered tham in glorious b&w.
Then they should reboot them with an all blk cast.
@@SlickArmor That's already been done.
Blacula (1972)
Scream Blacula Scream (1973)
Blackenstein (1973)
Dr. Black & Mr. Hyde (1976)
@@andrewweisneck1102 ah yes Blaxploitation. I remember that but I think today's reboots are some new woke hollyweird thing going on.
I'm not into colorization but these were very well done.
I feel the same way but I couldn't stop watching. Colorization has come so far!
Except the Frankenstein monster, that movie really should always be in b&w.
I love the old b/w Universal monsters films and look forward to watching them on Svengoolie more than the color Hammer Films versions, but I would kill to own these in color.
(This week on Svengoolie: "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" which would be awesome in color).
It would be cool if someone would colorize the old movie serials based on comic book characters like:
Flash Gordon (1936)
Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars (1938)
Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe (1940)
Buck Rogers (1939)
Captain America (1944)
Adventures Of Captain Marvel (1941)
Spy Smasher (1942)
Batman (1943)
Hop Harrigan (1946)
The Vigilante (1947)
Congo Bill (1948)
Superman (1948)
Batman And Robin (1949)
Atom Man Vs Superman (1950)
Blackhawk (1952)
The Phantom (1943)
The Adventures Of Captain Africa (1955)
Mandrake The Magician (1939)
Brick Bradford (1947)
The Green Hornet (1940)
The Green Hornet Strikes Again (1941)
I also would like to see the Penny Singleton / Arthur Lake Blondie movies and the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan and Jungle Jim movies colorized along with the Dick Tracy serials and any other comic book related TV shows and movies like Flash Gordon with Steve Holland, Dennis The Menace with Jay North and Zorro with Guy Williams.
As much as I love watching The Three Stooges in b/w on Me-TV every weekend before Svengoolie, the colorized DVDs look amazing and make you notice things you never would in b/w.
Amazing clip even the ending love it
