For the casual work boot category try Nicks Handmade Boots. They are pricey upon first look. Once you have then in hand, you realize that they are a bargain. Once you break them in, you have an heirloom. Mind you, these boots can do real work. My favorite boot is the Officer, in brown chromexel, toe cap, and a 430 minilug sole. As a person that always purchased "budget" footwear as part of a frugal living lifestyle, my pair of Nicks converted me to a person that will splurge/invest in high quality (material, fit, and craftsmanship) footwear going forward when needed.
I mean I appreciate the advice BUT I have had a pair of Timberland boots for over 5 years and they cost me $80 and they're still going strong and look great, I use them very often on hikes.
I would like to echo your thoughts; I have many Timberland boots that cost me well under $200, some I've worn for 10 plus years. Some I've even worn while working on cars, getting on the ground and grinding the heels and scuffing the sides of the boot........still going strong. So no, you do not have to spend $200 for longevity.
Don't know if you've seen the guy's video that recommends dark olive green over black and brown, but the way that color looks with all the paired colors of clothing he shows is VERY convincing of his logic. Not limiting at all! Dark for sure, though, as normal olive falls into where Ashley was saying.
I align with Ashley’s perspective on seeing shoes as an investment . I absolutely love shoes, but my cash flow is limited,so some of us are slowly building our wardrobe. I recommend brands like the following: meermin,Paul Evans, carmina etc. I just got some red wings and loving them, but breaking them it’s taking a minute😢😂
I have been wearing combat boots almost exclusively for the last 5 to 6 years. Some of the best boots ive seen are the vintage army surplus leather boots. You can get them for like 50 bucks. They usually have good year welt. They are as good as my 400 $ pair of cowboy boots. Some European combat boots look rugged and sleek. They work well with almost every outfit For suede boots in the slush and cold i snoseal them. Yuu loose the fuzzyness but get the waxed flesh look. It looks really sharp
My wife likes my boots and how long I've had them. I've had my Iron Rangers longer than I've known her, and there is something cool and masculine about having something that long that still performs well.
i like your videos and the way you describe outfits and style, but i have a request; you seem to make tips for tall skinny & big guys . yet you never had anything for the smallest dudes out there so maybe in the next videos you can make something for us 5' - 5'4 guys ? it would be awesome.
Why are light brown / beige / sand boots not recommended and rather dark brown? In one video you said they are trickier to pair with clothing, could you explain the difference in versatility between beige boots and darker brown? Thank you!
thank you ashley! been a sneaker guy for over 2 yrs. but i got inspired to wear boots again! excited to wear chukkas, chelsea, and would love to wear DMs!
I've got a cheap $50-ish pair of faux leather moc toe boots from Kohl's that have held up for well over 6 years at this point with very little wear. I rock them every fall and winter, casually, but still holding up just fine. I'm going to upgrade to real leather at some point, but in my opinion there is no need to start there if you are on a budget and just plan to wear them casually.
Hi love the content ! I am a fan of zip up boots myself… very clean and sleek look . I feel every Instagram mens fashion influencer owns a pair of Chelsea boots in every color to match their skinny jeans …that look is done to death!
I don't own any of the boots mentioned here. I own tactical boots which I USED to wear for work and still do when doing chores. Other than that, the only boots I own are Western boots. I'm not a cowboy, but I am a Texan. All my boots are excellent quality and aren't meant for work, except for one pair. Every pair is black, so they will go with everything I own. They are of a variety of styles, but are all snip and round toe types. I hate square toed anything, so they won't be in my closet. I was surprised to see that Western boots weren't on the list. When I'm dressed nice and wearing my boots, I often get compliments on them.
I have 1 pair of full price boots (red wings) but have got lots in the sale for under £100- Blundstones, Timberlands, Russell & Bromley, DM chelsea boots and Richard James Mayfair Chukkas that are all fine. The advice to not get ‘cheap’ boots (meaning poor quality disposable fashion) is good but it’s not as simple as price.
Pro tips, not all boots over 200 worth , not all boots under 200 bad, just look for discounts, make sure the upper is leather, if its cemented/glued just take it to local cobbler to stitch it, for cheap, if thr sole cheap go to cobbler change the aole with others(vibram, crepes, commando)......
Yep. Full or Top grain leather and goodyear welt or blake stitch. Saying you should spend $XXX.XX on anything clothing related is completely useless. Just look at the crap fashion houses are gluing together in China and charging ridiculous amounts for.
Wait so much good i for but so many questions. Can I wear my cowboy boots if I'm not riding today? What about hiking boots? Do snow boots count as a new category?
01:39 "Stay away from leather blends" I see what you did there... that is a pair of leather TCX X-*Blend* motorcycle boots. (excellent motorcycle boots by the way)
Timberland makes a very stylish and under $200 REAL leather boot called the Earthkeepers Original 6inch. The leather is sourced from a tannery rated Gold or Silver by the Leather Working Group. Glued soles can be resoled, there is no such thing as repairing either sole, they are replaced.
Great vid. For green boots I think a green/grey tone can work. Specifically Loden suede. If you have a lot of earth tones in your closet i've been able to create lots of outfits with them.
Chukas and Chelseas are often cheaper offerings because of their simple design, thats why I like to get them in suede and colors like olive or oxblood. My default lace up boots are horween flesh cacao leather good year welted boots I got for under 200 as seconds
1:39 LOL, these are motorcycle boots with all the protection, not for walking or everyday use. Moreover, many of the boots with rubber and even cemented sole can last for many years.
Will disagree with the point against green boots. A dark olive green is the perfect middle ground between black and brown interestingly enough. I'd say this color is a fantastic way to subtly change up your daily wear.
i needed this. lol. regarding what you mentioned @10:59 , would "sharper" styling be applicable as well for top-heavy physique when wearing Chelseas? the model in the photo was fit so i was wondering if that would apply to others too lol. THANKS!
My 180 dollar Justin’s lasted 2 and a half years. Still more life just need resoled. Been wearing my current pair for about 2 years and there’s practically zero compromising wear
Burgundy and chili let you cover black and brown situations. Black shoes unless casual like double monks are for really formal situations. Dark browns and reds cover a wider area.
I have a pair of winter boots made by Clarks that are 10 (!) years old and still look quite nice. Mid height, all black, real leather, Gore-Tex. I bought them with discount for about $100. Extremely comfortable, warm, waterproof, very good grip in winter. Never had any issues, no repairs as yet. This year I got another pair of Clarks (Clarks Durston Hi, olive) for winter for less than $100 (with discount)...
I was on an airport shuttle and a lady complimented my boots. So yeah, they notice. I have a coworker whom I'm not sure if she's aware of this, but she usually scans me when we encounter each other and she always starts at my feet.
You said avoid greens... Some greens, sure, but wouldn't a dark olive green be even more versatile than brown? I feel like that would go with any color denim or chino.

Boots looks tidier, because the shaft height will hide the lace knot up high in the pants. For 8inch boot the knot won't show up even when you are sitting for kneeling down.
I agree, never go cheap on boots. Even for work, if your feet aren't happy, your not happy. Anyways, I tend to always got with a casual lace up. I find most chukka and chelsea boots to be hideous.
I had a pair of boots I got on sale for $75 dollars and I just retired them after 7 years. I think retail was $180. I think you just have to know how to find quality at the lower price points and not just spend money and expect quality

Chelsea, chukka, and hiking boots are a hit with the right outfits. Always go with good year welted. Costs more but worth it in the long run.
