I share your feelings about mules; my uncles who were born and raised in the Depression always had them about and it was a pleasure hearing the stories they told about the mules.
@@larryengland7001 Thank you Larry I appreciate it. My uncle had them on their farm as well during that some timeframe. He said as a child, he’d watch the men come in every morning and harness them up for the days work. Thank you for your very well qualified observations about MULES. Most people who train horses only, need to do themselves a favor and take the time to learn about this incredible animal. I have trained Lions, Tigers, Jaguars, Elephants , and Chimps in a zoo for reasons of managing them for our safety and medical treatment. I found that a mule has the same mindset as a Chimp. The main thing I found was patents and respect for the animal goes a long way.
Thank you for your insight I appreciate it. They are incredible animals and truly think through a situation. I have horses as well but the mules can think through a situation and figure it out. I’ll put a bucket of grain in a different paddock and when the mules realize I’m not coming to them they will start navigating their way to me through open fence gates. The horses will continue to get frustrated there is a fence in the way. Have a great week and thanks for watching!
Your mules are gorgeous. I learned a lot about mules from listening to you. Thank you for sharing this good content. I first heard of "riding" a mule from a customer ( I was cutting his hair ). He said he goes riding up and down and all through the hills & mountains in SE TN. He was so nice to answer the many many questions I had for him. I could tell this man loved his mules from the way he spoke about them. My curiosity has never ceased since that day about 4 years ago. I remember feeling jealous that I do not have what that man has with these wondrous creatures. ❤️
Thx Auntie I appreciate it! They are truly incredible and such good therapy to be around. That was back when I first bought the farm and wow the fencing was rough with lots of weeds! I've done a lot of work sense then and they have much more grazing area. I did a video when we rode to bottom of Grand Canyon with them and it was unbelievable. We are going to Sheshone National Forest around Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in July for a week. We will pack in with probably 10 pack mules carrying everything we need for the week. Moving camp every night as we head deeper in and take out on the other side after crossing the mountain ranges and 3 river basins. Should be awesome and will make a great video! Thx for watching, Dave
This answered my question about mule temperament. I hear that mules have bad tempers, but I've often wondered if this comes from people who abuse horses and try that sort of behaviour with a mule. The fight vs flight behaviour you mentioned answered my question. My mum has donkeys and they're very gentle, but I certainly don't think they'd tolerate any mistreatment the way horses do. They won't do anything they don't want to. Once they escaped and I tried to drag them back to their field and they refused to budge. Eventually I had an idea of holding some of the spare electric fence wire between us and cornering them back into their field which worked well.
My wife bought me an older Belgian mule that was skin and bones. I babied her and got her healthy again. And she takes care of me on the trails. Love her! I grew up with horses and had a horrific accident when I was younger (massive head trauma, had to learn to talk and walk) I swore I would never ride again... welp good ole Opal the mule has brought the joy of riding back in my life. (We let her mane grow out and it is thinner but it does lay down on her neck, so maybe she is more horse than donkey in that regard.)
Thank you for sharing and glad to hear you have gained the inner strength to conquer your fear. They are incredible animals, my first one was a belgian draft as well. Would love to have a team of them! Thx again for sharing your story and I appreciate you watching, Dave

You can also breed a horse stallion with a donkey mare, they're more expensive . I live in south spain and they are more popular than with an father as a donkey. I have a young Hinny as they're called in English.
Great video. You mention around 2:34 that a donkey can be a guardian to goats and sheep. Can you keep mules with goats or is this a bad idea? I've heard mules can hurt or kill goats but maybe not as long as properly trained? Thanks!

Thanks for the info. About a year ago I was looking for a breakdown like this. The only thing I have to find out now is whats a jackass. Thanks for your help.
I can break it down for you, Female horse - mare Male horse - stallion if intact and gelding if fixed Female donkey - jenny or jennet Male donkey - jack or ass (commonly combined for jackass) Jackass can often be one of your co-workers as well! Mule comes from a horse mare and a jack donkey Hinny comes from a horse stallion and a jenny donkey. Hope that helps and thanks for watching, Dave

hi deb from VT here I am really enjoying your talk about mules . I years back had horses and a Welsh Cob molly she is a character and a half . I loved owning her unfortunately I had to give her up allong with the others due to financial abilities .but she made herself at home with the appy colt that I gave away at a good home ( sold the 3 yr.colt for $300 and the molly decided she wasnt leaving his side so they got two for one deal ). I loved riding her had an austrian saddle britchen ,breastplate, crupperfor her and made a bridle for her . She would always be obstanet when i first got on her and then she would be great . I miss her . couldnt get her to cross a stream unless she wanted too or a open bridge , she would sit like a dog and i would have to drag her ass accross with my pick up until we where two feet on to bridge then she would trot beside the truck . ashe is only 13.2 and is dark chestnut with black mane and tail . story goes that she was result of a show pony getting bred by the donkey down the road that got loose and that as soon as she was born they got rid of her , they didnt want anyone to know that their prize pony had ,had a mule . That come from a vet who took her and raised her to the age of 3 when i got her . at that point she could drive and was riden just a little . well I am going to listen to the part 2 of your story . thank you again sincerely deb
Thank you for sharing your story Deb! You have had quite the experience . I think you definetely need a mule so you can tell me more adventures! Thx for watching, Dave
Thx David I appreciate it! 9 out of 10 folks knew what I meant but theres always the one who has to tell me Im an idiot. I didnt catch before I published but we all make mistakes. Thx for watching! Dave
Same guy sold me a "mule" I had it from a colt and raised it thinking I would have a solid working machine. I had the vet come out and check it after about a year...turns out the rotten cheat sold me a great Dane! Man was I embarrassed...
Don’t know of any gaited mules currently. I was in an accident and hard for me to ride so I’m driving more now and have gotten a few drafts for that. My bay was sold to a guy for his 8 yo granddaughter and the red is supposed to be going to Cody Wyoming to an outfitter. You can google “Jake Clark Mule Days”, definitely be some there available as well as Reese Bros Auctions in TN. I think they will have their riding sale in March, Jake Clark is around same time I believe. Hope that helps and thx again!
Very familiar with him. Spent many a phone conversation with him and have some of his tack. Wealth of knowledge he is, I appreciate the tip and thx for watching!
First thing, thank you for your fabulous video and all the great experience that you have with those beautiful mules. And for the bad experience from the so-called mule breeder, if he is one, I truly believe you. He should have made things right with you when you purchase a mule from him. I'll make you to stay away from scoundrels like him or others that cheat people out of their hard-earned money that they have saved to buy a mule..
I believe you meant they buy low and sell high. I have a mule I've had for 10 months and still can't catch her in the pasture. Can catch her in the corral.
In my youth bout a hundred years ago walking past some cows from the rear and smacked one on the ass, not hard or anything but it kicked me in the shoulder. I swear it was like getting struck by lightning. Black and blue for weeks. Oddly enough I haven't walked behind a farm animal since
A horse trailer will work for mules, horses and mules need trained for it. Ive had mules, donkeys and horses in tbe same narrow 2 horse straight load trailer.
I did see a ripoff report for a mule trader in Kentucky. Maybe it's your review. Too bad. I'm sorry you had to go through that. At 10:00, I think you might mean he buys them low and sells the high, correct? Overall, this was very informative. I knew almost nothing about mules .
Do you know of any sellers in southern Texas that have baby weaned mules someone can purchase? Husband and I bought some land and plan to get a few mules. Starting to look into them.
Not in southern TX I don’t. “Dixie Long Ears” is a lady that goes to all of the mule auctions (reputable) and she provides a live feed. Google her or check on RUclips. Reese Bros in TN is one of the biggest mule suppliers to the industry and they have a yearling sale but think it was last month (?). Cindy livestreams all of their auctions as well. I’m sure there is someone out there but just not sure. Kelso Mules is another good guy. Both Kelso and Reese have websites I think. Most I know are in East. First weekend in April in Colombia TN is “Mule Days” and it is incredible. The entire town shuts down and schools are closed. Lots there for sale. Western Mule Magazine is a good source as well. Facebook groups are Mules World, Ranch Mules, Rockin A Mules, Draft Horses and Mule Farming, Working Mules, Gaited Mules for Gaited Mules, Mule and Horse Talk, Missouri Mules, are just a few groups. You post on those sites and someone will tell you for sure. That should get you started, hope you find what you want! Dave
If you use a mammoth jack and a nice big draft, you can get close in size to the draft mare. 17.1 hands and 1800 lbs not uncommon. Check out Mule Days in Colombia TN and Bishop CA to see pics of them
Joy is 7 years old 15.1 hands 975 lbs approx Chief is 12-13 years old 14.2 hands 875 lbs approx. The guy that I bought Chief from buys them low and sells them high

He is 5 and they were calling him "Stubby" which I felt wasn't dignified enough for such a fine steed! I make videos just about every day showing them off and the vids are not very long if you get bored and want to check them out! Thanks again and good night!

Thanks!
Enjoyed listening. Very informative!

Thanks for the info. About a year ago I was looking for a breakdown like this. The only thing I have to find out now is whats a jackass. Thanks for your help.
I can break it down for you,
Female horse - mare
Male horse - stallion if intact and gelding if fixed
Female donkey - jenny or jennet
Male donkey - jack or ass (commonly combined for jackass) Jackass can often be one of your co-workers as well!
Mule comes from a horse mare and a jack donkey
Hinny comes from a horse stallion and a jenny donkey.
Hope that helps and thanks for watching, Dave
Thanks for this. I know several I see cycling dirt roads in Mich. And 1 Mediterranean Miniature donkey. All see me coming and are at the fence for a carrot. I do short videos on Ed Ann Arbor channel. Rural rides.

Aren’t mules more heat tolerant than horses? Can you earn trust by brushing them? Do they like that?
Any time you spend with them earns trust, once they understand your not going to put them in a situation thats dangerous then they will be your forever partner. Thx for watching
Nice 😊
hi deb from VT here I am really enjoying your talk about mules .
Buy them low and sell them high, We know what you meant, and appreciate your insight.
Thx David I appreciate it! 9 out of 10 folks knew what I meant but theres always the one who has to tell me Im an idiot. I didnt catch before I published but we all make mistakes. Thx for watching! Dave
Very informative
Same guy sold me a "mule"
I had it from a colt and raised it thinking I would have a solid working machine. I had the vet come out and check it after about a year...turns out the rotten cheat sold me a great Dane! Man was I embarrassed...
Hey I'm in the market for a good broke gaited mule, if you know of any, please let me know. Your video was very informative.
@@bdradley1 thank you, and so sorry to hear about your accident.
A mule is out of a mare and a donkey. They usually are Mammoth Jacks. And I would call Chief a brown color. Not a bay. He looks Seal Brown!
You need to watch Queen Valley Mule Ranch on RUclips
Very familiar with him. Spent many a phone conversation with him and have some of his tack. Wealth of knowledge he is, I appreciate the tip and thx for watching!
First thing, thank you for your fabulous video and all the great experience that you have with those beautiful mules. And for the bad experience from the so-called mule breeder, if he is one, I truly believe you. He should have made things right with you when you purchase a mule from him. I'll make you to stay away from scoundrels like him or others that cheat people out of their hard-earned money that they have saved to buy a mule..
Thank you Tony I appreciate the kind words and thx for watching! Dave
How bought a mini mule? Will they have the same characteristics
They should be very similar! Good luck and thx for watching.
Oddly enough I haven't walked behind a farm animal since
Hahaha I’ll keep that in my bag of knowledge! Thx for sharing. Dave
Thank you Karl I appreciate it. Yes I misspoke and thats exactly what I meant. Thx for watching! Dave
Maybe i should get a mule to ride!!!
Dave
@@bdradley1 awesome, thanks
Nice animal
Thanks, interesting.
What kind of weights are the mules derived from draft horses ? Thanks
If you use a mammoth jack and a nice big draft, you can get close in size to the draft mare. 17.1 hands and 1800 lbs not uncommon. Check out Mule Days in Colombia TN and Bishop CA to see pics of them
Joy is 7 years old
15.1 hands
975 lbs approx
Chief is 12-13 years old
14.2 hands
875 lbs approx.
The guy that I bought Chief from buys them low and sells them high
Thank you I understand
Las primeras mulas de los EEUU, fueron unas mulas españolas, las mejores del mundo, regalo del Rey de España, Carlos III a G. Washington.😂😊
I belive you meant to say. The mother is a mare not a mule.
I always thought that mules were sterile
Prodomwtly they ate steril. There is always the one in a million molly mule that foal buy it's really uncommen.
A mule comes from a donkey and a horse NOT a donkey and a mule.
You are 100% correct and I never realized I said that. I made mistakes in that video and did not know how to edit at the time but never caught that and that’s pretty serious, I appreciate you commenting and thanks for watching!
I knew what he meant...
@@richardkalmwater5996 Thank you Richard I appreciate you understanding as most. There’s always someone that’s going to point out anything you do wrong and make sure you know about it
I'd seen a cow do that once.

Pancho Villa rode mules
I thought mules could not breed. I thought they were a mix between a horse and a donkey. In the beginning you said they are a mix of a female mule and male donkey.
Yes I misspoke and I apologize. I corrected in comments a while ago. You are correct, mules are sterile. They have an odd number of chromosones. A mule is a mare horse and a jack donkey. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for watching! Dave
One misspoke word!
Dads a dunkey and momma's a mule! LOL!
Yes I messed that up and didn’t catch before hitting publish! I corrected in comments, I hate that but that was in the beginning when I had no idea how to edit. I try to correct everything before publishing I learned my lesson lol! Thx for watching, Dave
You said the dad's a donkey and the mom's a mule.
Your right I did, didn’t realize before I posted and then it’s too late. Not that I expect you to read all the comments but I did correct myself. Your only the second person that commented on that in 2 1/2 years. I appreciate you watching and my apologies! Dave
Buying mules high and selling mules low is NOT a successful business model, traditionally 🙄😁
Yes I misspoke but fairly certain your a smart guy and knew what I meant, traditionally
@@bdradley1 Easy does it, big guy. It was gently gig.
Right off he is wrong, the mother is a Mare (Female Horse) Muie is the offspring of A Male Donkey & A Female Horse. & if you reverse the parents you get a Henny.
Yes I mis spoke but that had already been addressed in the comments. Thank you for pointing it out in such an aggressive posture instead of corrective criticism! I’m just glad there’s people out there like you that can point out whenever somebody makes a mistake!, It makes the world such a joyful place
You're reply is just right back at them Your reply is doing the same thing they did so how can you get mad at them
I never heard of a henny.
Buy high sell low … why?
I think he had it backwards
