  • HP Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo after umpires corrected an inadvertent foul mechanic by 1B Umpire Ryan Wills on a fair ball down the line. Report: www.closecalls...
With two out and the bases loaded in Florida, Miami batter Jazz Chisholm hit a line drive directly at the feet of 1B Umpire Wills, who maneuvered out of the way of the bounding ball and in one motion called the ball fair...except that in getting out of the way of the batted ball, Wills had spun around and mistakenly pointed FOUL, which resulted in both teams stopping play because they believed that the umpire had called a foul ball (and thus a dead ball) instead of a fair, live ball.
Upon Crew Consultation with Johnson, 2B Umpire Dan Bellino, and 3B Umpire John Libka, the umpires employed Official Baseball Rule 8.02(c) to rectify the situation: "If the umpires consult after a play and change a call that had been made, then they have the authority to take all steps that they may deem necessary, in their discretion, to eliminate the results and consequences of the earlier call that they are reversing, including placing runners where they think those runners would have been after the play, had the ultimate call been made as the initial call."
Lovullo was ejected after throwing his hat while arguing the decision: OBR 8.02(c) Comment prohibits coaches from arguing such reversed calls and/or crew consultation outcomes, while throwing uniform or equipment items in reaction/disgust of a call is an ejectable offense pursuant to MLB's Standards for Removal from the Game.

Kind of what Jim Joyce did to Armando Galarraga after he screwed him of a perfect game in 2010 versus the Indians.
There were two outs in the bottom of the 9th. Jason Donald was the chance for a perfecto. Cabrera cut off the throw where Gallaraga covered first and Joyce, working at First base incorrectly ruled Donald safe, costing Armando a perfect game. Joyce later admitted in a post game press conference that he “missed the damn call” and he “took away a perfect game from a kid who worked his ass off all night.”
The two met at home plate the next day as Joyce was fighting tears the entire way down the tunnel. He was assigned to call balls and strikes. Gallaraga handed Joyce the lineup card.
      Sorry for the boring story

Lovullo was simply trying to get away with benefiting from an umpire error here.
It was a sadly unsportsmanlike attempt to get away with something he knows he has no right to.
If it happened to his team, he would have been out there screaming for AT LEAST what the umpires awarded.
Anyone with any baseball experience knows that the award was the MINIMUM outcome of this play.
Usually, with bases loaded and a ball shot down the 1st base line (or even 3rd) like this, the offense has a very good chance of cashing in 3 runs, not just the 2 that were awarded.
This was a gift to Arizona, but Lovullo was too pig headed to just accept it.
On the umpiring side, great situation management by Johnson with the mic.

It remains a judgement call -- not the judgement of fair vs foul -- but the judgement (umpires' discretion) of the outcome if the ultimate corrected fair ball call had been made in the first place. The phrase "... placing runners where they think those runners would have been after the play ..." requires the umpires to make a judgement. This judgement is not subject to protest. This actually happened to me in an ASA 18u Gold travel ball game. The batter hit a scorching one hop grounder that landed right in front of1B, went over the bag, and then passed in foul ground in the very spot I was in when she hit the ball. I pointed fair and while trying to get out of the way of the ball I did a 180 move that ended up with me pointing foul. The 1B coach, batter-runner, and 1st baseman knew it was a fair ball and the BR went back to first after running out the single. No one started screaming but the defensive coach talked to the plate umpire who then came to talk to me. He knew what had happened and just wanted to be able to confirm it to the defensive coach.
The proper technique for signaling a foul ball is to give the dead ball signal (both arms extended above the head) and then pointing foul if it's close. A fair ball is indicated by pointing into fair ground only. In my case the travel ball coach knew what the signals meant so he had a clue as to what actually happened. Either Lovullo has no clue what an umpire's signals mean and how they are properly used or he is trying substitute his judgement for the umpire's.

When you keep yelling louder, wildly gesticulating, talking more than the umpires - you've given up any pretense of "getting an explanation". "Get your money's worth", then say good night and go home to cool off.
Also: MLB needs to address the fact that "wildly gesticulating so close it comes within inches of the umpire's face" is nearly as much of a microaggression as throwing equipment within 45 degrees of "at the umpire".

There was no normal foul signal of both hands up and no verbal "foul". The problem is an old mechanic that is still employed. My info may be in error but I was told that back in the day the NL umps signaled foul by one or both arms pointing foul and the AL umps signaled foul with the "time" signal. When the NL and AL umps were merged they started using both signals, the point and then the "time'. You still see this mechanic occasionally so the foul arm point can stop play in MLB.

    • @FUGP72
      @FUGP72 Год назад

No...there needs to be a balance between getting the call right and delaying the game and destroying momentum or giving teams time to get pitchers ready.
replay was never supposed to be about many of the ways it is used today. It was always sold to the fans as a way to correct egregious bad calls like the Galaraga perfect game blown call. But now, it is used to hold up every single game at LEAST 5 or 6 times in any close play while the team has a guy in the fucking clubhouse watching TV to check the replay. If you have to have someone watch the replay, it is not an egregiously bad call. Same with if the replay officials have to watch 6 different angles 5 times each before deciding. And it sure as fuck was not meant to overturn Safe calls on stolen bases of other head first slides into a base where the replay shows the runner clearly beat the tag, but then for one frame of a 120 frame per second super slow motion replay, his pinky came off the bag by half an inch and therefore he is out. Holding up the game for that is NOT good for the game.
If they want to keep the idiotic challenge system (and they shouldn't) then it should be like tennis. You must IMMEDIATELY make the challenge signal. For baseball, since it is not the players on the field call, they should have to make the call right away, then the umpire looks to the dugout and asks the manage if he would like to challenge. The manager should have to say yes or no IMMEDIATELY. Any egregiously bad call would be known right away.
But really, replay should be done the way the NHL USED to do it before they stupidly went to the challenge system. If the goal really IS to "get it right" then why should that only apply if the wronged team hasn't already lost their challenge? Why is it then OK to get it wrong? So, the best solution is no more challenges. Just have someone in a central office assigned to watch each game. If they see a play they think could be wrong, they buzz the umpires to hold up the game while it is looked at. Much quicker this way. And fairer. And single frame of a slow motion should NOT be grounds for overturning. If you can't see it after a few different looks, the call stands and get back to the game. Baseball got along just fine with some bad calls here and there while games moved along without interruption. The reason why people stopped watching wasn't bad calls, it was too much downtime. The Galaraga safe call should be overturned. A ball down the line that maybe kicked up 4 specks of chalk does not need to be overturned if it means the game grinds to a half and teams get an unfair advantage by a momentum changing break. And the difference is, the Galaraga call would be overturned in 5 seconds

I understand asking for an explanation or even arguing the call, but I don't understand how the ump's assn or MLB put up with managers shoving their finger in umpires faces like that. You're a grown man; act like it. If that happened in an airport or something security would get called. And BTW, he got the benefit of the call with the runner at first not being deemed to have scored, which is entirely possible on a double in the corner like that.

I know this stuff doesn't happen very often, but when they do, the signals are too easy to reverse. Tradition will not allow the change, but this could be avoided by just changing the mechanics.

Jazz Chisolm clearly reacted as though though a foul ball had been called. He stopped between first and second and retreated toward first. The defense stopped playing. This shows the impact when an umpire screws up. Since neither the dead ball signal nor a foul ball vocal call was used, the crew's corrective action in this case was reasonable. Still the emphatic-but-incorrect signal created the confusion and led to an ejection. Hopefully MLB metes out some sort of punitive action, however quietly, for umpires who make impactful screwups like this one.

First off, chisholm should have kept running. He’d have been on third. He started complaining about it as soon as he left the batters box. That slowed him down. Also the right fielder should have been playing through.

Was the call right? Yes. But in baseball, wrong calls happen and that's part of the game. Can pitchers start throwing fits for blown calls?
Whatever the umpire "meant" to do, he called it foul, according to everyone in the ballpark. He got it wrong. But then the umpire crew decided to double-down on disadvantaging the Diamondbacks by tossing the starting pitcher after an extremely suspicious hand-check the following day.
