This is one thing I will never understand about baseball. Throwing a baseball 90+ mph at someone's head, no problem, part of the game. Do it too many times and they'll warn you not to do it again, then you get ejected from that game. A batter throwing a punch because they got hit in the head with a fastball? Barbaric, multi-game suspension. Edit: From the replies, it sounds like my understanding of throwing at a batter is off from the reality of the situation. Thanks!
Not only that but it’s like this thing that pitchers can get away with beaning sometimes, but the batter won’t ever be allowed to charge the mound so yah that may not seem fair but that’s when you’re pitchers come in 😈
Hey--love the channel. Given the Trout situation and the managers jawing at each other about throwing at each others' teams heads the previous night, wouldn't a warning be merited before the game started? What would justify doing that pregame? Johnson said in his postgame interview that he was "not aware of the incident with Trout last night" (weird)...couldn't an ejection be merited for the throw behind Rodriguez? If he's tossed in the first, we might not even have the situation in the second.
Great idea.. but sadly inconsistent with the rules.. We will eject anyone who brings up and argument from a previous game.. thus they also can't bring up the sh*t from a pervious game.. but it will factor with the early warning...
Trout seriously thought that pitch was intentionally thrown near his head?? God imagine having the two best players in baseball on the same team and still be a pathetic franchise of losers.
I was surprised by that! I mean, I totally would've done the same thing myself; the fans were already and 100% going to continue chirping Seattle the rest of the game, but the double bird seems almost like taboo in a stadium with ~30k people. At the same time, I guess he already knew he was ejected and gonna get fined so not much else to lose. I wonder if there's an extra fine/ penalty for doing something like that? Definitely had to re-watch a couple times to double check that he actually double birded it, hahahaha. Even as an Angels fan, that was classic and I love the passion by Winker. One thing I noticed is that the Angel's manager doesn't seem to be able to control his dugout at all, but the Seattle manager is able to during the the final confrontation after the sunflower seeds were tossed. Two up and in pitches followed immediately by an intentional walk and you don't think it could have been intentional? Hello? They planned to put him on base the whole time; after they missed hitting him twice and they knew they made it obvious that they were gunning for him they went for the walk to avoid getting the pitcher ejected. That's pretty clearly how the Angels saw it, and likely with good reason.
@@lolbanmedaddy9792 hello 👋 I don't think it was intentional. Inside is trouts weakness. After the WP, a base opened up so they gave it to him. Why doesn't baseball go to the basketball rule, anybody not in the game leaving the bench is automatically ejected. It would eliminate scrums and keep the bullpen in the bullpen.
I agree that umpires should have to meet up together to discuss possible ejections, however, I also agree they they should have the power to eject players immediately. I've seen many scenarios where an umpire reacts to a situation poorly and makes an ejection that is not warranted that can throw off a teams bullpen/pitching plans. I think what they should do is allow immediate ejections with the requirement of meeting up afterwards and discuss whether or not it can be reversed.
@@davej3781 There has been one un-ejection in MLB. The umpires misunderstood what was happening (the players were all sharing the same bat in an attempt to break out of a losing streak). First batter struck out and left the bat at the plate. The umpire tossed him. The manager explained what was happening and the ejection was rescinded.
It seems pretty unlikely that Swanson was trying to hit Trout last night given the game situation and his overall control (walk the batter prior). Wish also the video made a little clearer the Angels' fairly unusual switch to an opener/reliever at the last minute prior to the proceedings. At what point does premeditated intent to injure another player border on criminal behavior?
Right that's not mentioned here. It is highly unusual that they switched their pitcher to the "opener" right before game time..it was pretty obvious from the game situation the night before that the pitch to Trout wasn't intentional. I doubt that Trout asked for them to do this today though . Starting to feel bad for Trout because if he never gets off this team he will never win anything
They weren’t trying to hit him but they were trying to pitch him in as every team has done all season. If you have a guy throwing 95+ who has no control he should not be trying to hit spots up and in, especially not with the best player in the league in the box. Mike said that exact thing post-game.
@@tadewilson4109 Swanson has had pretty good control inside this year, just not last night (walk to previous batter included). Plus - a missed spot in is a magnitude different infraction than intentionally throwing at another players' head, imo. Intent when guys are throwing 95+ matters.
@@tntsabretooth I think this is just the culmination of Trout getting buzzed game after game. It’s shitty that he got hit and teams have been trying to rattle him since because of that. Since Trout has always demolished the Mariners they were not going to pitch to him in that at bat at all and would rather face Ohtani. If you’re going to waste pitches don’t do it up and in on a bad control night, he missed on back to back pitches.
I can see both arguments, regarding requiring the Umps to meet. On the one hand, you don't want the umps to overreact and eject somebody "by accident", but on the other hand, such as in situations like this, you want to be able to immediately eject instigators. To be clear, what I mean by "accident" is, I think I recall that there were a few very quick hooks that, on reflection, seemed like the umps were "automatically" ejecting the player, rather than analyzing the situation.
Let's be honest, MLB requires umpires to meet to issue ejections after a warning because they know that the required meeting is enough time for tempers to flare and shit to hit the fan before they can make their ruling. If umpires can eject players and managers out of a game with no conference when there is no warning issued, there is even less reason to require them to meet when there is a warning in effect... that is, unless your goal is TV ratings. Warning issued? Word gets out and people tune in to see if anything goes down... something goes down? Even more viewers! Win for MLB. The easiest way to ensure that a warning turns into this instead of an preemptive ejection is to require all four umpires to meet before issuing an ejection after something goes down.
@@marktwain368 MLB always has a LARGE pool of umpires from MiLB to call on and temporarily fill in the gaps where needed. MiLB umps are often called up to MLB during the season to cover for umpires that are taking a break. MLB umpires get several weeks to a month of time off each season and so MLB uses MiLB umps to cover while they are off. They also hire from the same pool of MiLB umps, but they usual do official hiring between seasons. Either way, this is not a major issue for MLB. The only slight issue they are going to wrestle with for the short term is the lack of experienced crew chiefs. For 99 games out of 100 that isn't going to matter. It's only glaringly obvious that the MLB is lacking experienced crew chiefs when something like this goes down.

Angels fan here, just for full disclosure. Wantz should have been tossed after that first pitch of the game. It was behind the batter and at his head. That makes it deliberate in my mind. No warnings should be necessary. Hopefully, that would have put things to bed. Seattle certainly threw at Trout in the previous game and suffered no penalty. A pitch at a Seattle batter is in order (although I would have preferred a fastball to the ribs rather than the head). Then the player-to-player beef would have been settled, the umps and MLB could look good by tossing a pitcher, and everyone could have stayed safely in the dugouts. As you note, warnings don't seem to do anything other than make everyone unhappy. Give the umps the authority to keep the game under control as fits the situation.
@@Cheshire_234 What about it? Seems to me it was a pitch that got away. And after reading and watching a bit more, I'm going to back off of my statement above about Trout. Pitches up and in are his weakest area. So it makes sense to pitch him there. And if you lose one, you're going to hit someone. And there was good reason to pitch Trout up and in - he had hit 5 homers off Seattle in the previous 4 games against them. I'm now more likely to blame Nevin. He's a hot head and shouldn't be managing in the Majors. Maybe 2/3 of the blame Nevin for putting Wantz in just to hit a batter, and 1/3 on Wantz for going along with it. They both should have been tossed after the first pitch of the game. It was almost certainly intentional and at the batter's head. When Wantz finally did hit Winker in the next inning, it was at his thigh or butt - much less likely to cause a serious injury.

Also, the managers don’t argue about which of their guys have been ejected. They argue and only want to know which of the opposing team’s guys have been ejected
In my umpiring career I only ever had one bench clearing brawl. It was during a Men's fastpitch softball tournament up at Big Bear Mountain in California. Me and my partner were at an auxiliary field away from the main complex. An illegal slide at second base lit the fuse and things just exploded. All me and my partner could do was to write down uniform numbers of who was going to be ejected. We let the players sort things out and then we put our heads together and decided who was getting tossed. We ended up ejecting two players from one team and 3 players from the other. Now, these teams were lucky if they could field a twelve man roster. Both teams ended up with 9 players each.
The fact that the MLB allows the bullpen to empty without disciplining anyone is ridiculous. In hockey, if you leave the bench or penalty box to participate in an on-ice fight, you're immediately ejected from that game and will likely be fined and suspended for future games as well by the league. The MLB needs to do the same. If you leave the bullpen to engage in a fight or potential fight, you're automatically gone for 10 games and fined $100,000.
There is a big difference between hockey and baseball, and it mainly has to do with what is on the player's feet (hockey players wearing skates; baseball players wearing cleats with interchangeable spikes, depending upon the surface being played on, plus the condition of the field). Also, in baseball, the team up to bat actually has a disadvantage, mainly being, in a bases loaded case, you will have 7 men (the batter at home, one batter at each bag, the first and third base coaches, and the batter in the "on-deck" circle), which is still 2 shy of those in the field (9); except for a power play or a two (or three) man advantage, you will have an equal number of players on both sides, thus, along with the danger of skates on the player's feet, hockey bench clearings are banned while baseball bench clearings are permitted.
That's because in hockey their fists actually cause damage, you would see a mob like this in hockey, everyone would square off and there would be carnage, this is just a mob of dudes throwing cheap shots into a crowd
So I don't agree with that. The bullpen is far off and out of the whole thing. You gotta think that when they come in they will be peace makers as is the case 99.9% of the time as out was here. But the fact the umpires have to "talk about it" while EVERYBODY is still pissed off and yelling at each other is dumb. I'm not saying it would have prevented it but maybe of the umpires had their originally authority to chuck people who act a fool like the pitcher maybe it wouldn't have happened (unlikely yes) but maybe. They are there to enforce the rules so why handcuff them in those situations? Cause the league doesn't wanna hurt feeling HORSE HOCKEY
Has anyone explained why mlb has not tried the rule used in other sports, that any players that exit the bench area to participate in a scrum are automatically ejected?
I often contemplate this. I think the answer is twofold. 1. The lopsided amount of players on the field. You could rectify this by adding that anyone not directly involved with the altercation who tries to get involved is also tossed. But that could lead to batters getting brazen about starting things with pitchers. 2. I personally believe the league uses the altercations to boost viewership.
To me this would mostly be an excuse, though it has some merit: You can't penalize people who rush out there to break up the fight, and you can't make umpires be bouncers. My response: If that's really all there is to it, use field security. (After making it clear that any player who harms field security gets *charges filed* against them and a very long suspension.)

They literally hit Upton in the head last time they played and didn’t even apologize, instead the blamed the mariners groups crew for how the baseballs were handled. That’s where it really started.

That would mean the umps actually did their job for once. Also, as a M's fan, why do they keep pitching to Trout. Just walk him every single time.

Yeah. Maybe this will finally convince MLB that intentional HBP conferences are stupid.
@@davej3781 There has been one un-ejection in MLB. The umpires misunderstood what was happening (the players were all sharing the same bat in an attempt to break out of a losing streak). Excellent commentary on the voice over. Subscribed.
I love the "dinner order reservation with Phil Nevin." Also, what the heck is Christmas in June? Only in Socal. Great job on the video, by the way.
When did this meeting crap start? I don't think this is Angel Hernandez-approved.
Lady commentator said MLB is desperately short of umps this season. Can that be fixed??
@@marktwain368 They need to bring in umps from Triple-A.

What about Michael Lorenzen hitting Upton in the head?

Good thing this isn't hockey
Seattle hits their superstar, the best player in the game, this is what you're going to get.
Nobody got hit....What're you talking about?
Havent laughed this hard in a while, always good to see a MLB game turn into a WWE cage match.
How do you post without getting copyrighted?
Has anyone explained why mlb has not tried the rule used in other sports, that any players that exit the bench area to participate in a scrum are automatically ejected?
because it’s entertaining
I often contemplate this. I think the answer is twofold.
1. The lopsided amount of players on the field. You could rectify this by adding that anyone not directly involved with the altercation who tries to get involved is also tossed. But that could lead to batters getting brazen about starting things with pitchers.
2. I personally believe the league uses the altercations to boost viewership.
Because this is baseball you snowflake. Let's have fun.
Because no professional league has the balls to send everybody home, including the crowd.
If baseball was like this I’d watch it all the time 🤣🍿
it is like this all the time and dont watch it
