  • We will all likely be touched by cancer in one form or another - it’s a scary reality. Dr. Sharlene Gill, a Vancouver-based cancer specialist, researcher, and Professor of Medicine, shares inspiring learnings from her 20 years of experience looking after people with cancer - bearing witness to the universal fear associated with a diagnosis of cancer, as well as acts of remarkable courage and major scientific advancements in the treatment of cancer. By approaching cancer with a perspective grounded in awareness, empowerment and action, Dr. Gill believes we can not only reframe our narrative of cancer to one of hope and control, but also ultimately improve our outcomes with cancer. Dr. Sharlene Gill is a Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and a Medical Oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies at BC Cancer - Vancouver. She received a Bachelor’s of Science in Pharmacy followed by her medical degree (MD) from the University of British Columbia in 1996, and then completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. Dr. Gill subsequently undertook a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) and a Master’s of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health (Boston, MA). In 2011, she spent a year as a Visiting Professor at the Sun-Yat Sen University Cancer Centre in Guangzhou, China. More recently, she graduated with an MBA from the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina in 2017.
With 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Gill is also actively engaged in education and research, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters to her credit, and has presented widely at national and international cancer conferences. She is committed to scientific research as the path to progress in cancer care, and is the Chair of the GI Disease Site Committee for the Canadian Clinical Trials Group (CCTG). Dr. Gill also believes that mentorship and advocacy are critical to a sustainable cancer care system - she serves as Chair of the UBC Medicine Mentoring Committee, and as the President-Elect for the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Dr. Gill's approach to cancer is admirable but it's too bad her compassion doesn't extend to tenants renting from Plan A Real Estate. The company is one of the worst in Vancouver and has a long history of deceiving and evicting tenants. Dr. Gill has been involved for years and owns numerous properties that are rented out through Plan A.

BOYCOTT SHARLENE GILL AND PLAN A REAL ESTATE. This woman is complicit for ruining lives by displacing people from their homes using harassment tactics. Over a decade later and she is SCOTCH-FREE driving in her little red Ferrari with Vancouver’s worst: Anoop Majithia. This video is paradoxical.
My question to Sharlene: where is the humanity when it comes to evicting tenants to harassing long term tenants from their homes to hike up rental costs and replace with short term airbnbs? Why perpetuate the issue with Vancouver’s housing crisis AND evict people with disabilities?

Let's be honest, most insurance companies are in the business of making money There are ways to detect but the blockers for most are costs. We don't have a medical system, we have a medical company that is about profit.

We should also talk about the rising instances of cancer in young people. 30s and younger. And when talking about that we should also ask why do doctors and imaging facilities make it difficult for younger people to get these screening by putting an age limit on them? And we should also mention that these cancer screenings are expensive. Not everyone has insurance or can afford it and they certainly cannot affor a colonoscopy or a mammogram.

Cancer is hard but we can influence our narrative. Giving this TEDx in February was important to me - not just for the experience but for the message I wanted to share. I called it 'How to Flip the Script on Cancer' but I could've called it 'What my patients have taught me'. I hope it will make a difference in how people think about cancer. Please feel free to share, like, comment if this resonates with you

Don't give up dear. I know it's hard to live with it. Try kapalbhati pranayam 1 hour and anulome bilomo 1 hour per day. And do water fast and intermittent fasting. Eat plant based diet and avoid sugar and proccesed food. I hope you will get better by doing this ❤❤

the screening age should be lowered from age 50 to 45 or earlier with so many younger people being diagnosed with later-stage colorectal cancer and also metastasis.

If the medical solutions are short lived why pretend you have something to offer. Doctors usually are most concerned about covering themselves and so will recommend drastic action where there might not be a need for it just so they don’t get sued. So their advice bus unreliable.
