Hey Adam, while I could handle the other questions, I had to refer to our clock's designer to answer this one for you... my brain's just way too small!
In response to your last question, this is what he stated:
"While he's right that the specs on paper are better, understanding those specs is important. The .02ppm basically explains how close the clock is to the stated frequency. That's more of a long term reading. That's the basis of many companies' claim that you'll only be off by so many millihertz every so many weeks. While that's definitely an important stat, there's a few things to keep in mind:
For one, if your whole system is running off the same clock, then the importance of that spec is somewhat diminished because they are all still synced together. The variations in the master are reflected across all the units.
Another thing to bear in mind is that many of the stats are long term averages that show how a clock performs in a system. At .02ppm we're referring to a minor fraction of a fraction of a percent as compared to a mere minor fraction of a percent. One of the important things that we try to emphasize in our clocking systems is more the short term performance. We need to remember that when converters are involved, short term jitter becomes very important. Phase noise is the random variations in clock pulses that are often times disregarded because they technically have no affect on the overall long term timing. They won't affect that ppm spec on the datasheet. The issue is that with converters, every clock pulse counts. That pulse acts as a map that tells an ADC system when to take a sample and a DAC system where to place the sample during reproduction. When the ADC system has a different map than the DAC system then that sample will be placed in the wrong spot (even if by a slight amount) which then manifests itself as distortion in the audio band. That is to say, if the ADC recording sample is taken when the clock is say, 200 picoseconds off but the DAC's playback of that same sample is only 20 picoseconds off, then that sample may be placed in the wrong spot during playback. Many folks say it's inaudible, but we don't agree. We feel that this emphasis is why our clock has such an effect on the audio quality. While clock accuracy is important to us, we've always been people to look beyond the spec sheet, instead of just seeing what everyone else posts and then trying to beat it.

Most Awesome Video Dude! I've been a recording engineer for over 20 years and a live sound engineer for the past 5 years and NEVER even considered using word clock. I've always seen the BNC on the backs of equipment and thought you only need it for video. and now i do video and never needed it... So I dismissed it... Until a few weeks ago someone told me the YAMAHA LS9 was a great mixer but sucks without an external word clock... I was like wow! That led me to investigate witch in turn led me to your video.... I listened to your recordings and when the timpani cam in on the second pass I was like WAIT? WHAT? I didn't even notice them on the first pass... I went back and listened to both passes again and YES there was a significant difference in the warmth of the low end.. The timpani stood out. The Cellos and Bass were much more present in the mix.... DAMNIT! Something else I need to buy.....

Yeah so my reply is REALLY late to the game here but I'm happy this was helpful! I actually got into this clock because someone randomly asked my advice on if it was important. I had no idea so I tested it & ended up spending $1000 on the clock featured in this video lol

Loved that intro :-D I found the internal clocked first take to be more bright and alive. Second take sounded perhaps more smooth but lacked clarity. Very hard to judge with two different takes though.

I know Tascam makes a rack mount master clock. And I think it works 2x as good when you are dealing not only audio but also video editing because the timing is really important in syncing audio to video

In our testing recording acoustic piano in a critical environment the clock had a better stereo image, a clearer sound, and better defined bass. Also worth noting, different clocks have different effects on the sound. For example one clock created a brighter recording we didn't care for on our material. We were told that clock was popular for use with guitar based recordings and not acoustic based recordings. I think you would find the same if you tried different clocks on similar material. So it might be for a mobile or even studio rig you'd want a couple of clocks around. Crazy thought, so we just use the one we liked on our acoustic material and went with that. It does make a difference.
What clocks did you test?
@@timperry2375 it’s been a long time since our tests. But I recall it was an Ardvark clock against an Apogee Big Ben. I don’t think the Ardvark is around anymore. For acoustic piano the Ardvark resulted in a better bass and stereo image. Warmer. The Apogee was brighter and thinner sounding. I spoke to an engineer at Apogee at the time and he said their clock was better for rock, electric guitars etc…We also tested cable on our mic pres and Mogami Digital cable certainly resulted in a noticeable more transparent sound. Since these days, sound has taken a backseat for this level of attention. So I don’t fuss like I used too though the artists at the time and I certainly appreciated the effort and results.
Interesting. The big ben is a staple, and has been used in many of the metal albums I've liked iver the years. I'd be curious to see if it's still worth it up against the clocks from Black lion

Hey! Yeah the difference is remarkable. I just don't record or mix without the clock anymore because I can't deal with the difference haha.
I actually didn't do any more research after testing the BLA Micro Clock Mk III XB -- I just bought this one & moved on with life! I am certain that different clocks produce different-sounding results but I didn't want to go down that rabbit hole. If you're thinking about buying one, the only advice I can give is to spend at least $400. My reasoning for this is that the cost & quality are always directly related & we need to buy a better clock than what we paid for with out interface. I hope that's helpful ;)
@@AdamLansky Yeah I'm really falling down the rabbit hole here. I've gone as far as looking at oven controlled clocks and even adding a 10Mhz Rubidium Atomic Clock as a reference to the oven controlled clock(only online, none in person) I mean it's staggering how many thousands of dollars one can spend on time. My application is just home hifi and replaying only on my audio interface which is a Burl B2 Bomber D/A. Since I'm not recording and syncing an A/D and D/A I just wonder how well it could work for just home playback, I understand you're syncing a number of devices for recording and playback. I'm on the journey if it's worth it for hifi playback.
Very well done video. Lot's of fun but lots of good serious stuff too. I just ordered the Black Lion micro mkIII, used but in good condition. I do think I heard a difference here in your comparison. It seems "more in your face", more in the forefront with the Black Lion on. I know the MKIII is a step lower than the MKIII xb, but I hope it gives me some of what you have in the XB. I'm running 3 interfaces and two Cymatic Utrack 24's, so the six outputs on the Black Lion should do the trick. One reason I decided to watch your program here is to see if you terminated each unit, and it looks like you did. The only thing that worries me a little is that you doubled up on the one unit by using not only the 75 ohm plug, but the internal terminator as well. I've read from some pretty good sources online, I think, one of the might have been Sound on sound, that it can be detrimental to double up on the termination, however your recording sounded great, so I'm not sure if they're right on that. Ultimately, I hope that I'm right in assuming that we should somehow, internally or externally terminate each unit when using this clock because it's not set up in a "daisy chain" fashion. Let me know if I'm wrong on that. Great job on your end, and keep up the good work. Marc Trainor.
Clocking..it's the taboo subject for me. I have a question and would be lovely if you can be gentle enough to answer it ar at least give me your opinion on that . I have only one audio interface (Orion 32+) which I use to control some outboard gear like compressors, eq's, reverbs and a tube summing box, from time to time i record a guitar through a Isa One Focusrite preamp. My question is : considering that the Orion has its own very good clock which can be the master for my setup , does it make sense to have an external clock ? Thx
Hi Andrei, it sounds like you have a really nice setup! What I would say to anyone in your position is that a high-quality clock like the BLA XB will improve the quality of all aspects of production including tracking quality, playback quality while mixing, & bounce quality. Any interface I use while connected to the XB is operating at its absolute maximum potential & the difference is noticeable. Anytime I travel for work, the XB comes with me & the project is better as a result.
After owning the XB for over a year, it's hard to imagine working without it :)

adat, etc). I have a basic UMC404HD by Behringer. How would I
incorporate a word clock device to my Behringer? I ask this question
because I plan to purchase dedicated mic preamps in the future so I have
more varieties of preamps. So, in my case, do I need a master clock

well, uhh, sorry for the EXTREMELY late reply, but I haven't been checking this account. In your case, I would recommend investing in a better interface before getting involved with a clock. A Behringer might work but doesn't have good sound to it, nor does it have the appropriate connections you need to set up clocking. I wouldn't get anything less than a Focusrite 18i20 to start! My chain: I got this same clock with my Avalon 737 preamp plus my burl b2 bomber AD converter and my Apollo Twin Duo MKII. and I got my u47 telefunken mic. Im 24 feeling blessed and thankful to be able to afford this stuff with no hesitation. thank God for sure.
hm, strange that I didn’t notice a huge difference, and i’m listening on all high end gear. I guess it’s true as they say YMMV. Still, i’m interested in this piece. I have 3 digital devices, two (2) MOTU 16A’s connected by ethernet, and a digital effects box (the Yamaha SPX2000), usually connnected either analog or through AES/SPDIF, depending on how many input/outputs I need on my master clock 16A. Both interfaces have great ESS32 converters, but my understanding is that a good clock, or dedicated A to D converter should still make a difference that will be more than subtle.

If you're really interested in picking up one of the XB clocks, your best bet is to get in touch with BLA. The device is not cheap but the results are real. Talk to them about your production needs & maybe something can be arranged!
If setting the antelope as a master clock, is the result better？ Antelope also got a really good clock.

I think the sonic difference between the two examples leaves no doubts about the clarity, depth, and stereo field when using a master clock. At least that is my opinion based on what I heard.
Just curious if you have compared:
1. The Black Lion hardware vs Antelope Audio Master Clock hardware
2. How much of a difference would it make if you were using an interface like Goliath and utilize it as a "Master Clock" to connect a couple of other devices instead of having a dedicated Master Clock.
Also, can you please explain the signal path / gain stage for the Royer SF12.

Ioannis Andriotis Honestly, I have only tried the BLA Micro Clock XB & was sold. I have no doubt that Antelope makes an outstanding clock but I have not compared. There are some very interesting articles that assert different clocks will color a recording in different ways that are more or less pleasing to the ear!
In terms of using an external clock for multiple devices rather than the internal clock of any given interface, I typically default to "you get what you pay for". In other words, let's say I have a $3000 interface & a $1200 clock. Considering the amount of other components in the interface, I highly doubt its internal clock accounts for 30% of the device's cost. Therefore, the external clock is more likely of higher quality than the interface's internal clock. While I admit this to be a generalization that might not always be accurate, it is my starting point for assessing these things.
As for your SF-12 gain staging question, I set my gains the dame regardless of what microphone I am using. I will typically aim for -6dB to -3dB (digital) at the absolute loudest passage of whatever I am about to record. I like to use the Millennia HV-3D, Universal Audio 4-710, & the Universal Audio 2-610 on this mic. There is really no wrong setup for the SF-12 as it sounds lovely on any source. If I want some compression, my UA 4-710 has great compressors on each channel OR I use my Revive Audio modified ART PRO VLA II with Cinemag xformers. This is my best compressor & imparts a beautiful tone even if I don't press the signal from there I run straight into the Zen Studio. All Mogami interconnects, NO PATCHBAY.

BLA is partnered with sweetwater to help mod your interfaces and optimize them. Do you think that will be more efficient than the external clock?
Black Lion Audio is AMAZING at what they do. In terms of their modifications to interfaces, I do not believe they adjust or replace any of the internal clocking units. They are typically improving op amps, capacitors, & connections within the hardware to improve the quality of signal path. How I would look at this is that it will result in an improvement to "sound texture" or timbre of the tracking quality.
The external clocking has a different effect that I would compare to image focus & overall clarity. If you can afford to have BLA operate on your devices, I do suggest it, but the clocking issue is different than their mods.

It sounds like you need to adjust the sample rate within Logic, and then the XB, and then make sure the Zen Studio is looking to external clock via the Zen Studio Launcher software control. I hope you solved the issue by now!!

Why terminating the out bnc?
In lower-quality clocks, the electrical signal originating from the clock can actually reflect off the unterminated hardware back into the clock like a mirror. This can cause the clock to jitter!
Black Lion Audio has assured me the Mk III XB would not have this problem, but why take chances? ;)

Hey Juelez, thanks for watching. If you are running a production space with multiple A/D converters & outboard digital gear, all devices must clock from somewhere. The quality of the clock determines the accuracy of the sampling & ultimately clarity in your signal. Depending on your goals & where you are along the career path, it might not necessary to have a super-high grade device like the Black Lion Audio Mk III XB, but you will likely benefit from having a dedicated clock rather than syncing to your primary interface. As always, you get what you pay for!

I do not work without my XB. If I travel, it comes with me. Every session, whether it's a single stereo pair on a piano or twenty channels on a live tracking session, the XB is my source for time while tracking, mixing, or mastering. I believe this device has improved the clarity & robustness of everything produced since I started using it. No regrets :D
There is a solid chance that most recording setups will benefit from an external clock, the Black Lion Micro Clock Mk 3 XB just happens to be mine! I hear the difference & I love it.

Why are you going to make me spend more money? I use an rme 802 and though I've been really happy, at the time of purchase I was wanting an antelope but now after hearing your example with the designated clock, it brought everything to life.
sorry lol yeah the cool thing about the clock is you can take it anywhere you're recording & improve anything you touch. If I'm working in a friend's studio, I bring the clock & everything sounds better. Think of it as an item that will make you a more valuable engineer no matter where you go!

Hey, I am not familiar with this device. Anytime I'm buying gear, something I think about is the cost of the device compared to what I expect. An example might be if I own a new $1000 interface, I would want to use a clock that is also recent technology in a similar caliber of production, (i.e., probably not Behringer).

Holy Crap... I was not expecting that difference. It honestly sounds WAY better. way less muddy, Like you said it felt more real.... Why? I don't get it.
Okay so here's the secret:
Imagine you're watching an old move that plays the frames at 24 per second. That means each second is divided into 24 parts as equally as possible & one individual frame is displayed for that duration of time... So what happens if the frames aren't perfectly timed? Some arrive slightly too soon or too late & the image is no longer smooth -- it will appear inconsistent & be visually distracting.
It's the exact same thing with audio except there is a frame every 1/44,100 times a second or higher. These inconsistencies in timing produce micro phase shifts that cancel the dimensionality of sound. A good clock will be more consistent & produce more real-sounding audio!

Thank you for very informative video. I am personaly hearing exactly what you are describing and that is the reason why i am looking around to buy my clock as well (BLA is candidate). I hear purely increasing details with clocked version, slightly brightness, but in sense that the AD just be able to capture the higher frequencies not forget them, the depth is better as well and what is for me the most important the music is for me more emotional due to combination of these aspects! What is still questionable is aging of these clocks, what i understood from Grimm papers (another great clocks - not 10M), 10M clock are better to keep their quality longer time. So what about clocks like Grimm, BLA? Are they going to be "off" in a year and should be replaced or what we can expect? For now yes the timing which leads to clearer image and recording is there, but for how long?
Hey sorry for the late reply! I'm assuming you already found your answers but just in case.....
I talked to the rep at BLA when testing this unit & asked similar questions. Now, this was a few years ago but here's what I remember: All clocks slip. What is important is the metric used to measure how much slip happens, in particular the window of time that was measured in testing. So here's the funny part...
When I was talking with BLA something I brought up was that the clock built into my Antelope interface had better numbers on paper than the Mk III XB. I asked, "Why is your clock better than this one? The test data shows Antelope's clock is statistically superior." The BLA rep explained that their testing took data over a longer sample of time than Antelope's. So it's like Antelope measured less slips but they measured over a shorter time window. And more importantly than any kind of testing -- the BLA clock just sounds better regardless of statistics.
buying good gear is to produce something fundamentally better than what we have. So no matter how precise a standalone clock may or may not be, odds are it is improving recording quality!
Lansky Sound hello, i appreciate your answer even after the while and it is interesting, what i can say as i became satisfied owner of BLA mk3 xb in the meantime is that i fully agree that sometimes specs are saying nothing 😀 anyway i bought focusrite 2 Pre as my second recording converter and this converter benefits from BLA clocking without any doubt as well. So for me good investment and i can go for slightly cheaper converter and have decent quality after clocking.

So I just need to hook up the bnc coming from the bla sparrow to my fireface 802 word clock in?

im using my rosetta 200 to clock my apollo quad...thoughts?
Hey, thanks for asking! The Apogee Rosetta 200 has some age to it being just over a decade old at this point. The UA Apollo series is still fairly hot off the press & it's my understanding that a lot has improved in terms of clocking during this time period. Apogee vs. UA is like Godzilla vs. Wu Tang so it's a really tough call (although Wu probably wins, really). My suggestion would be to repeat the test I performed in my video:
1) Record identical source material with the clock & without the clock
2) Bounce in REAL TIME with the clock & without the clock
3) Critically listen with the clock & without the clock to different aspects of the recording like high freqs, mids, & lows
This process will def take some effort but you'll have tangible results to compare. You'll at least find things you like about each or maybe even a clear winner. I wish it was possible to give a hard answer, but maybe this will help with a decision. I hope this helps!

Cool. Whatever works best is the way to go, so if there's no audible difference I guess the more simple setup is the route. You might hear differences at higher sample rates depending on what you test with, but this is also dependent on speakers, connection quality, etc..
At the end of the day, the best setup is the one that inspires creativity & produces results! Rock on

Uhhhhhh...WHAT? You say you spoke to Antelope about clocking? Igor from Antelope started Antelope with doing clocking. Clocking comes more into play when you have multiple tracks running into a mixer. Matt Newport (who started Black Lion [moved on to Dzingoff]) who I used to go thrifting with, would also disagree with your assessment...as he designed the unit you used as the "control". Beyond ALL of that...it is "RUclips"....no REAL results unless you have files to download. Every audio nerd knows, "no real judgement, until I get the OG files".

incorporate a word clock device to my Behringer? I ask this question
because I plan to purchase dedicated mic preamps in the future so I have
more varieties of preamps. So, in my case, do I need a master clock

Hi Leng, thanks for watching! I looked at the Behringer interface you have & there is no way to hook up an external word clock device. While external preamps will be really cool & absolutely provide an increase in quality over the Behringer pres in your UMC404HD, my recommendation would be to invest in a better interface first. The quality of A/D & D/A conversion will improve your overall production value.
