    I’ve been convinced from the start of the series that it’s simply Obsidian and steel. It’s impossible to forge by any normal means even in our world. Because Obsidian is so brittle and fragile, yet it’s sharper than any sword.
    With Dragonfire and blood magic they’ve been able to combine them into a sword that never loses its edge and has the properties that only dragon glass (Obsidian) has that can kill the Whitewalkers.

  • @FraJa1980
    @FraJa1980 6 лет назад +247

    I wonder if Valerian steel is called "dragon steel" because it is made using obsidian as a carbon additive like modern day crucible steel uses.
    Would explain why it kills white walkers and their wights

    • @TraysonMartin
      @TraysonMartin 6 лет назад +47

      Well Valyrian steel is like the real world Damascus steel. Damascus steel has been known to have carbon additives (wood biomass) that created carbon nanotubes in the steel. Both share similarities in their sharpness and durability, and also in appearance and the fact that each one's original process for creation is unknown.
      Although if they really wanted to know how it was forged to see if they can create more, surely they can just consult Bran.

    • @FraJa1980
      @FraJa1980 6 лет назад +10

      Yes i know that's why i thought the carbon additive could be Dragonglass/Obsidian because it is also called Dragon Steel.
      Good point, i can see Bran going all white eyed and telling Gendry in the new season.
      7 more months....pfff takes way too long.

      That’s what I believe as well, it makes too much sense, especially since by any real world means it’s impossible to achieve. But they made Valyrian steel with magic.

    Valyrian Steel is based on a real thing, Damascus Steel, there is books from the middle ages that talk about the legendary blades forged on the city of Damascus, they were described as having a watery pattern, and being harder and lighter than normal steel, the book said that they were so sharp that if u dropped a hair on that blade it would split in half, after the city of damascus was sacked and burned, the knowledge of how to make those blades were lost, nowadays some people are able to do blades that look like the description with modern machinery, but they dont have the almost magical qualities described on the testimonies of middle age people who wrote about the original blades, they were probably exaggerated but its an interesting story anyways

    • @GallopingWalrus
      @GallopingWalrus 5 лет назад +3

      Actually, most Damascus blades were forged outside of Damascus. But Damascus was the closest, and arguably biggest, trading city nearby. Smiths from around the area would bring the Wootz blades to Damascus for trade, and so they got named after where they were most commonly sold. Though the knowledge of how they were made was lost around the 18th-19th century. Modern attempts have been made to recreate it, and many believe that the late Al Pendray might have finally rediscovered how it was originally created. You can learn more about it in Mike Loades documentary on youtube, The Secrets of Wootz Damascus Steel.
      TL;DR Wootz-Damascus was sold in the City of Damascus. The Secret of Wootz Damascus Steel is a must watch on how it was probably made.

      @@GallopingWalrus there are two types of Damascus steel. One is just a decorative steel of middling quality and was often used in old shot guns (hence why a lot of modern shotgun ammo says to not be used in damascus steel shotguns because the barrel would shatter potentially injuring or killing the user as well as bystanders), the second is the actual damascus steel which can be made today by an increasing number of knife and sword makers. the way to make the steel is the same used for many other steel swords. the real secret was the particular ore which has certain properties and the addition of biomatter.

    • @GallopingWalrus
      @GallopingWalrus 4 года назад +1

      @@toomanyaccounts The steel commonly Damascus, which is actually just pattern-welded steel, doesn't have to be low-quality. Plenty of great blades have been made from pattern welded steel.
      It's just most are silly attempts at recreating the look of Wootz-Damascus.
      Only 3 different people have managed to consistently recreate true Wootz-Damascus. Two of those being the Late Al Pendray, his apprentice, and a Jordanian Smith whose name eludes me. Some people have managed to accidentally recreate what looks like wootz, but aren't ready to destroy their sample to get it tested.

    different, wider and rounder) then the
    archers and it'll be just fine there too.

    unlike the show you can't forge obsidian and it's hard to make weapons out of it because it's so brittle. the aztecs (or mayans i always confuse them, but the aztecs were bigger) used to get shards of it and jam them into pieces of wood to make swords, like the wildlings axe i forget his name, and the shards would have to be replaced because they break easily. I'm not sure if you could infuse it into a steel sword though

    I've always though that dragon glass was used in the process of making Valyrian Steel, and I think i know how its made.
    using dragonfire, steel and dragon glass are liquified and then made into an alloy, now this itself is a very very fragile and weak steel, what gives it its near indestructible abilities, is that once the dragon-steel is drawn out into a blade, it is quenched, not in hot oil like a blade normally is, but in dragon blood.

      Nah, the dragonglass candle is for the night before someone is sword in as a Maester. They have to spend a night in a cold, dark room alone with the candle, and find a way to light it. Now, since obsidian doesn’t burn, they almost always sit in darkness. This is to show magic is not a solution to ones problems.
      Now, Valyrian links are very rare, and you wouldn’t have to forge new steel, just have a bunch of rings ordered from Valyria way back when, and build the other rings around that.

    You mentioned that dragonglass gets really cold after Sam killed a white. Could it be that the soul of the person is sealed in the dragonglass? And then all it remains is ice which breaks down.

    I’m still wondering why they didn’t just craft arrowheads out of obsidian and put everyone they could behind the walls of Winterfell armed with bows. It would’ve been a much better use of the Dothraki than having them charge like a bunch of morons into a zombie army. With arrowheads the biggest drawback of obsidian becomes a non-issue. It doesn’t matter if it breaks because you’re not going to use it again anyway.

      The catspaw dagger has a dragonbone hilt, some bows are also made of dragonbone. It’s durable, but not sharp.

    one thing the show got all wrong is the fact that Dragon glass can't actually kill the white walkers, Sam tarly used one to slay an other, creatures of darkness created by the enemy of the God r'hollor which control the wights however when he tried to kill a eight walker with it it simply shatters

      Arya isn’t no one. Arya is Arya Stark of Winterfell, son of Lord Eddard Stark, sister to kings. She is shown as failing at losing her identity, in show and novels.

    The real question is WHAT IS DRAGONSTEEL? Is it just another mention of Valyrian Steel indicating the known timeline is EXTREMELY wrong? Is it confusion due to Dragon Glass? Is it a meteor made sword like Dawn? Or is it something else entirely?

    • @kitsilanocat
      @kitsilanocat 6 лет назад

      Logan smith maybe valerian steel is forged using molten rock of some sort? (Think: forged in the fires of Mount doom) That would explain why obsidian and valerian steel work in the same way against white walkers. Perhaps this dragon steel is steel forged in dragon's breath.

    Ehh idk why GRRM said V steel is sharper than normal steel... sharpness is purely a product of the fineness of what you use in the polishing/sharpening process. What he should’ve said is that V steel retains it’s harness longer.

    Your assumption in the beginning that none could forge the Valerian steel, is false. Tyrone Lannister called a black smith, who was one of three left in the world who could forge Valerian steel swords, to make two swords from Ned Stark's Valerian steel sword. One of these swords was given to Jamie Lannister and the other one was given to King Joffrey as a wedding gift. The challenge now is the lack of Valerian steel.
