The M119 engine in that thing is dead reliable and none of your issues are a big deal. Change your wiring harness, caps & rotors (those need to be changed every 30k or so), and spark plugs/cables, and I guarantee that issue will be fixed. You may not even need the harness tbh, a lot of these cars had the bad harness changed out under warranty; just check to see if the insulation is crumbling. If not, no need to change it, because caps/rotors are likely the culprit.
The slow reverse issue could be simple or it could be bad. Change the fluid and filter first, obviously. That could give you a very big improvement. If so, leave it alone after that. But if the improvement was either marginal or nonexistent then you definitely need a new transmission or a rebuild. Eventually the reverse gear will go out entirely, and the longer the delay when you shift into R, the closer you are to that inevitability.
That coolant leak is almost definitely your radiator. A good European-made aftermarket radiator is only like $200. And if you need a water pump too you're looking at maybe another $150. Honestly may as well just do both. The water pump is right on the front of the engine and really easy to get to anyway if you have the radiator and everything out already.
The SRS light may just be dirt in the seat belt buckle receiver. Spray some contact cleaner in there first and see if that does anything.
I'm sure the wizard knows all this already, but I'm a moderator at Benzworld so I feel a strange obligation towards these cars (LOL).
Boy, don't we all? I mean any MB fan would do.
Benzworlds has helped me out of some rough spots, love that form and the other forms like it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, bit didn't the problems with the wiring harnesses start in '94?
What about the plastic guide on the timing chain rollers? I heard it would be catastrophic if they fail over time
@mike york Timing chain guides are kind of a debatable issue for these engines. Some people open them up at 200k and see the guides in basically perfect condition, others have horror stories at 100k. Generally speaking I wouldn't mess with them unless I had to open the engine up for some other reason. Hoovie's car here has relatively low miles, so there's no reason to dig into it unless Wizard finds something wrong that we don't know about.
And you're right about the transmission; less than two grand will get you a rebuilt unit. Totally worth it, and a way better use of money than trying to repair the original.
The new driveway has been christened with its first fluid stain.
He has people to take care of that.
Somehow I feel this wasn't the first...
Leaky 500Es make me way happier than Jeep Gladiators.
Screw the Jeep Gladiator.
3.6 liters of disappointment.
Nothing like a good ole Chrysler DISAPPOINTMENT
Give it a week, the jeep will start leaking.... Remember, it is a jeep. :)
The Gladiator ain't that bad. It just costs about $25000 more than it should is all.
IMPORTANT.
1. Don´t touch any wiring on and around the engine if they haven´t been replaced. The isolation is known for going hard and set of big meltdowns.
2. Drive it to full running temp. everytime until you are sure the PCV system is ok. (no short trips)
3. Don´t know about the reverse issue, but it´s common with vacuum leaks in an external valve on the gearbox. If it seems stuck in second at cold, no worry, it´s by design.
4. (related to nr 2.) If it misfires, it is probably bad (or oily/moist/corroded) distributer cap+rotor. Very easy to take off and clean, but do both sides.
5. Never touch the gas linkage/throttle-stuff to rev it under the hood. It messes with the ECU and trigger codes and limp-mode.
6. Check engine mounts. They are hydraulic and are usually broken so that the engine sits to low. And then you won´t be able to replace the oil filter.
7. Disconnect the central locking pump (if it works) and then check the whole car for vacuum leaks. If there are leaks, the pump will die, and it´s many $$
The M119 is one of the best engines ever, but rather complicated. But with some simple tricks you can save yourself a LOT of trouble/money. Feel free to forward these tips to the wizard if he didn´t already knew. I add more if it pops to mind. I also have some documentation on the M119, but even better, i know a lady here in the south of Sweden who is a guru on an insane level about these engines. So if anything feels impossible feel free to ask. And somewhere in the US you also have Kenneth Bergsma at Mercedessource. Very good mechanic.
Happy to see you in one of my favorite cars. Mine is a 400SE from the same year. Same engine with a bit less HP, and a bigger car. But even my big barge are rather quick, but of course not as quick as yours.
The throttle information is very interesting. I guess there must be something electronic connected to the pedal to read its position?
I wonder what other cars are like this? (I don't mean modern "drive by wire" cars)
@@vcolinc The M119 is a true drive-by-wire engine, but as some other early adopters it has ordinary linkage from pedal to engine bay and also linkage for the kick-down cable. I can´t describe the installation from memory but one i can explain is the 1995 Citroen XM 2.5 TurboDiesel. the pedal has a cable out to the engine bay and there it is connected to a electronic device connected to the ECU which control the diesel pump.
If "e-gas" 1991 wasn´t cool enough, the M119 also use CAN-bus technology and at least on the W140 S-class, the ECU compartment has it´s own cooling system. And it has VVT.
Last but not least. The V12-brother M120 in the 600 is the engine that Pagani use in the Zonda.
Great advice!
i don't mean to burst your bubble, but everyone told him to get the cooling pipes pinned in the 996 Turbo, and we all know how much he followed generally well known and freely available information...

The W124 Series is one of the best of all Mercedes models... greetings from Germany
Ein W124 auch hoffentlich mein 1. Wagen. Was solideres gibt es nicht
I hope they never leave the roads of the world.
Having owned a 300TE for over 2 years now, i can say that is 100% true! :D
Mein 1. Auto ist auch ein 124er, 260E BJ 1988
Ich hab einen W201und einen W126. Also großen und kleinen Bruder...
Tolle Autos, keine Frage!
My 500E (last produced by Porsche in 1994) was previously owned by the Editor of F1 Magazine, who drove it for 6 years and 90,000mls. I have since taken that figure up to 285,000mls with few issues. Of the ones you mentioned:
1) Check the distributor caps for the misfire as these MUST be changed at 90,000-100,000 intervals without fail and that was found after by a Merc specialist using old time Bosch diagnistic machine after the official Merc diagnostic laptop couldn't identify the fault.
2) Check the low coolant sensor seal in the header bottle as they fail and need careful seating so as not to leak.
3) Poor shifting on the autobox can be related to a simple fluid leak causing low fluid level from either the transmission pan or the hoses to the rad. I replaced the hoses when mine leaked with race quality ss braided teflon hoses at a fraction of the cost of genuine Merc ones. The oil pan distorts over time and overtightening even to official specs will deform the gasket that will then leak. The solution is to loctite all the bolts in and ONLY screw the pan bolts up so that the little vertical tabs are on the verge of tilting upwards. That may only be ~5 lbft (!) but it is enough to seal the pan. A new pan would obviously be the solution but mine at the moment doesn't need it.
4) The rear axle has a ZF lsd that wears out very quickly and will be shot from about 50,000 gentle miles. The solution is to fit a Quaife ATB diff that will give significantly greater longevity for the same price as a quality ZF rebuild.
5) I have had a steering leak for the last 190,000mls than only requires a top up at each service.
6) My engine uses a pint (1/2quart) of 10W/60 fully synth oil every 7,500mls, which I consider excellent for the age and mileage.
7) The major issue with mine is that the lock barrel mechanism has failed, which is a common issue and the lock mechanisms are all on back order in Europe.
The moral of the above is not to widely speculate on dramatic failures and get a well informed and accurate assessment.

More like $5000, but who knows, that suspension looks a bit bouncy as well :eep:
this is a pretty cheap car to fix mechanically, nearly all mechanical part are shared in common with other mercedes models of the same period so parts are surprisingly inexpensive. Compared to an E34 M5 of the same vintage, the 500E parts are like 1/4 the cost..

@@justinprohm I don't know about fenders, but the bumpers are different. We don't have cars with enormous under-bites in Europe. Although as USA spec bumpers go, these aren't too bad at all.

Mercedes of the era are extremely well suited to a manual outside of the dogleg found on the W201 2.4-16
My first car was a 1993 320E with 500E bits and pieces from the factory, completely sorted out (it was my dad's). It drove like a real driver's car and wasn't meant for everyone, only car people would love to drive this car today, the gas pedal was hard as a rock to step on, the steering wheel was just perfectly balanced between stiff and smooth. We bought the car in 1996 and kept since then, around 5 cars came and went in our parking spots but this one stayed and always attracted buyers. Here's my W124 story.
Now this one I'm excited about. Looking forward to more videos! The 500E is a legend.
You know those problems don’t scare me at all. I’ve been pootling around in W124s for years. Many parts are interchangeable with other period Mercedes and many of them aren’t particularly valuable so should be plenty of good quality used parts. Good luck with the project.
Me: I really like those wheels
Mr Hoovie: Hideous period correct wheels

Those look like period Brabus wheels. I'm sorry, but I'm with Tyler, they're horrid. But they could be quite rare and valuable...
They're Zenders I think, I also love them.

I can't wait to see how much it costs you to bring this one back from death's doorstep! I learn SO much more from these videos than I do from the ones where you buy expensive cars. Hey Tyler, I own a 1993 320E and my car is fully sorted out but it always needs water no matter how perfectly sorted out it is, I would consider you keep 2-3 1.5L bottles in your trunk because you never know when this yellow water light will turn on on your dashboard, also avoid uneven cobbled roads as they will shake the car and empty it from all the water it has.
