Really enjoying the nature breaks between the construction portions. You are such a great couple! You radiate respect for each other. I believe that is the secret to a long relationship. Kim, you need a box to stand on so Norm doesn't have to bend down to be in the shot. LOL.
I admire both of you for diving into projects that might faze many other folks. Just one cautionary note: when using a nail gun please never keep your free hand "downrange". I've seen more than a few folks in emergency rooms with 16d nails in their hands. I'm enjoying your videos - keep them coming!
Keep them from warping, strap them together an get them fastened in ace as soon as possible. That way stop lot of that. Lumber is not all totally straight. You have to learn how to use it. 1st thing you learn in carpentry is that . TREES GROW ROUND. WHEN THEY ARE MILLED , THE ANULAR WRINGS TRY TO STRAIHTEN OUT. Don't forget that. When you install plates and studs , look down them if they are not straight , you will see a crown on one side . Make sure you put that crown up. Not one up and one down. So the crown side will be on the outside of the walls. When you drywall the inside, you are going to mudd the horizontal joint. When you are finished you will never really see that there was a concave inside.
The hula hoop, that is great exercise! My wife and I went to physical therapy and the gave us a hula hoop to help out hips and legs. They said it would help out in the bedroom too! LOL. Great video!
I would keep the lumber dry as possible. Tarp and up off the ground. Shed coming along real nice. Keep up the good work. Careful holding the 2x and nailing into your hand. That will hurt a lot. Don't ask me how I know. Thanks for sharing
Fun projects as you learn and do! Well done!! For raising a stud wall, I have used a short 2x4 nailed against the outside of the wall and you have something to brace with. You did it without that and did a fine job. I am a hobby carpenter as well, so it is all good!
A tip from another amateur carpenter: when you are nailing the plate to your studs, don’t place your hand on the stud right under the plate. If your nail misses the stud it could shoot into your hand. Not good.
Thanks for sharing your adventure. We love Northern Idaho. We had a great time in Coeur d'Alene last year, and hopefully will be returning again this year. As a professional carpenter, your framing is painful to watch, but entertaining. 😂. But you're gettin' it done. And I'm sure the end product will be outstanding. Pro tip: in the future, when holding the stud in position to the plate, keep your hand at least six inches from the end of the stud. It's very painful when the nail misses the stud and hits your hand. Don't ask how I know. 😉 Looking forward to seeing more of your project this summer. You guys are like Trent & Allie for seniors. 😂🤣 Sometimes I kill myself. 😜
I very much enjoy the (seemingly) easy pace you are setting. No real rush. Thank you for showing there isn’t always a need for speed, slow n steady works well. Congratulations on your build. 🖖🏻😘👍🏻🙏🏻
O my , we just said the boards look like there warping. We know the manager at a local lumber yard, and they are cutting wood to young and not getting it dry enough before cutting into boards.. not much you can do but lay them as flat as possible. They are going to shrink and warp as they dry.. yall are doing amazing,
Love watching you do this. Reminds me of helping my dad build their retirement home in Montana back in the late 70’s. Our air gun was our hands/arms and hammers🤣 Please be careful of your backs! We aren’t 30 anymore.
Fun to see your progress, it’s looking good! Think about getting a tool belt (or 2!) next time you’re at Home Depot. Really helped me feel more streamline on our remodel instead of walking back and forth trying to remember where I put my speed square, pencil, tape, chalk line, cats paw, hammer, extra screws/nails etc. And don’t be afraid to just get a bigger one. You’ll find something to put in those pockets. I went with the Milwaukee general contractor bags with the shoulder straps and I have never looked back. Oh and putting a pad of paper for cuts/measurements is another good thing to have in there. Hope you guys are doing ok with the heat this week!
That’s the problem with wood from home depot. It’s so wet ( freshly cut) that it simply warps. I haven’t found a way to stop boards from warping unless you go through each board and look at the ends to see which way the rings are positioned. Home depot has killed dried wood (sometimes) which is dry and won’t usually warp, but I think it’s only sold in 8’ lengths.
"kiln" dried wood, it's dried in a huge oven-like building. Kiln dried lumber is usually marked with a "KD" stamp and is more expensive than non-dried lumber.
Yes we are. We've been spending the summer on our property in our RV though. We message Bri and TJ every now and then and last we heard they were doing good.
OMG you two remind me of my husband and I when we were a bit younger! Do it yourself projects…..you two be careful, you are at a good place so we don’t want to see either of you injured!
How exciting. I can't wait to see how you guys continue to make this place special. Kim you are so tiny and so tough. I hope you didn't get hurt trying to lift that wall. Anyway have fun with your grandchildren. :)
Pretty good job you two. Here are a few suggestions. Buy lumber marked KD which stands for "Kiln Dried". If the lumber is bowed eyeball it and alternate the direction of the bow. One up then one down. I have a friend who moved not to far from Bonners Ferry to Libby, MT about 25 years ago. We have been through the North Idaho/ NW Montana area quite a few times. Beautiful area of the PNW. Good Luck!🇺🇸😊🌴
Haha! I have been going to the same stylist for over 15 years. I call it “make me look good - not an old lady haircut!” He laughs and tells me he doesn’t do “old lady haircuts”. I have no idea what you call it! 🤷♀️
Norm, trying to go too fast with the nail gun ;-). A tarp to keep the boards dry and a wood clamp or large C clamp will get those twists taken out before nailing. 👍
I’ve done the same thing too, sure makes building a lot easier too. Every time you and Kim were lifting those sides up I kept thinking, careful of your backs. We will be in your area last part of August, headed up to Glacier Park, Yellowstone among others, about a 2 month trip in our 303rls.
Good job you guys . How's the back doing . I , like you , have a bad back and labor intensive stuff leaves me feeling it . Us old farts still have it !!!! We will be watching your progress. Idaho looks beautiful Carl
Back is not 100% and you can probably see from the video that I’m moving slower and not bending much. It’s no where near as bad as it was 2 years ago but I’m being very careful right now. Thanks so much for the support.
Two things. First, when ordering lumber for anything serious, such as your shed, order from real lumberyards. Second, don't leave on ground covered or not for very long, unless you get it off the ground and covered. I shop big box stores if I'm building shelving, shop furniture, or other non-critical items. For someone who keeps asking if they are doing things correctly, you seem to be doing a bang up job. Although, it is probably too late now, but a standard shed door is 80" tall and if you are keeping a riding mowing inside, 48" wide. And one last thing critical ... eye and ear protection! I wear eyeglasses and unless they are safety glasses, you are taking a chance. I learned my safety tips the hard way, by violating them and suffering the consequences. After all, real men don't need instructions or safety gear. So said after three surgeries to repair broken kneecap for table saw kickback. OMG! Such beautiful countryside surrounding your property. Almost makes me want to sell everything and move up there. In Texas with 98 degs and 50% humidity, actually a mild day for here.
YOUR PROPERTY IS SO BEAUTIFUL... I CANT WAIT TO START. CHASING MY DREAMS. WHEN I MOVE UP THERE IN MY 5TH WHEEL BUY MY PROPERTY AND MAKE MY DREAMS COME TRUE GOD BLESS YOUR DOING AMAZING
Your talking about the cap plate. That is on top of the top plate. Just saying, not critizising. To teach others you need to use proper terminology. Thanks.
Us old farts can do anything...eh? We'll shown um!!!up!!!! BUT NORM!!! 3½ X 2 is 7... you could have cut 7 off the board!!! I was sitting here laughing !!! You two are a hoot... from one senior to another... proud of you both!!!
You know, as I was editing the video that same thought came to me. 3½ x 2 = 7! Why didn't I just cut off 7"? I was so focused on needing 3½ cut off each end 😂🤣
You doing good but try not to teach other DYI ers any bad habits. Way to much of that going on in these You tube videos. Yes I understanding that others need to learn, so let's teach people the proper methods. It really gets us Carpenters a fit.

Hey Mr. Norm....Kim really deserves a Wonder Woman hoodie!
She sure does. She has been an amazing help. Couldn't have done it without her.

Exactly!

I like to see Kim use the tools. My wife is scared of tools except a hammer, screwdriver and pliers. Power tools she won’t touch. You go Kim!
Kim's all in on the power tools, but she wants to make sure she knows how to use them first, which is good.
Waiting for this rest of the shed build … 👍🏻
Thanks. We’ve had grandkids all week so that brought things to a halt 😂

You need to use your wood right away or lay it on a flat surface and put weights on top of it.
