Another older 71 year old person here....I think Paul Simon is an amazing song writer, and I love every song he ever wrote.....Simon and Garfunkel did a beautiful rendition of this iconic piece, but the presentation did not get the message across....Music should swell emotion in the listener and cause pleasure or pain, or both.., if it didn't bring a smile or a tear.. then it did not do it's job...In the 60's there was much to sing about and cry about..,and as a result, it was in my opinion, the beginning of the best music in my life time, or maybe, all time....What David and Disturbed created here took decades to build, and thanks to Simon and Garfunkel, they had the perfect musical schematic to build a masterpiece that will last for generations to come......................I hope they get the message.
I'm 74 and actually still have the original Simon and Garfunkel album with this song...but I no longer have a record player. I've always loved their original song, but I adore Disturbed's version to the point of obsession. I listen to it, and reactions like yours, at least 25 times a day, every day. I can not hear it enough. I feel like this version takes me on a journey that I never knew I needed to go on. David's voice haunts me and I find myself waking up in the middle of the night just to hear the song one more time..but it's never just one more time. I have to play it at least 3 more times till my soul is satisfied and I can go back to sleep. I love music but have never felt this way about any other song before.
I am one of these older people who grew up with the original version and I always liked it. But after I first heard the Disturbed version I never listened to the original again. This is the only version which really lives up to the message of the song. Disturbed made Sounds of Silence one of my favourite songs, especially in these times when silence grows ever faster than a cancer and you really want to shake people and roar it into their deaf ears. David Draiman does it for me and I thank him.
Another "older person" here. I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel's version. That always seemed to "hover" around me, but Disturbed's version goes right to the soul and doesn't let go...even after the last note.

Totally agree!! I'm as old as this song, grew up with a mother who was a S&G fan and never understood the appeal of this song until I heard this version! I just wish I could play this to my mother to see her reaction, but too late as she is no longer around.

I agree. As much as I loved the original, this is more what the song deserves. If you read the back story of the song, it’s actually better represented this way. It is an incredible back story, but this is the way it should sound!!!
I’m right there with you. The original was “meh” for me. I cried the first time I listened to Disturbed’s cover because it was so emotional. If you haven’t seen the live version from Conan, I highly recommend it. It’s even better than the official video.
This older person, knows that this is the best version ever of this song. Simon and Garfunkel wrote the song as a warning but it came across as a folk type song and the message was not matched with the music, we loved the musical instruments in the original. Disturbed took this song to a level that was way beyond the Simon and Garfunkel version. Even Simon was blown away with it. The way Disturbed orchestrated their version gave the song lyrics the power they should have had from the beginning. By the way I am 66! Music when done well deserves to be listened to!
I'm 70. I found this several years ago, insisted that all of my friends listen, and they LOVED it. Yep, Simon & Garfunkel were the sound of the 70's, and it was rash and rare to say what they were saying, even though they did it so mildly. Times have changed, and we need stronger voices. David Draiman is beyond excellent in this song. Glad I did a little catch-up on what people think of this and caught your reaction - excellent.
I am also older and I never "felt" the S&G version. It seemed it was sung in too happy a way given the gravity of the words. Disturbed tied the emotion and frustration to the words. No matter how often I hear it, I get chills and a tear in my eye.
David is a classically trained singer with one of the best voices out there. Personally, I would not have compared it to Broadway but closer to operatic. I'm 70 and I thought the original was a warning about the direction society was taking. I thought this version started out with a sadness which turned into anger because society hadn't heeded the warning.

I’m 65 and love the original but this is CHILLING! SO much emotion! One of the best compositions ever! I wonder who put together that orchestration. It all fits together perfectly.

Paul Simon called David and told him that he liked David’s version of the song better. No better compliment than that. I Love this song. And I think I’m in love with David! 🤩
I'm 70 and grew up with the original version. I absolutely love this version by Disturbed waaayyyy more. It's so powerful it's hard not to burst into tears. I've played this version at least 100 times since I first heard it maybe a year ago(?). It's one of the best recordings I've heard in my lifetime... :)
@EwanReviews He is one for you. I used to work at a major concert venue in Detroit,we had Disturbed and that night I was working between the barricade and the downstage edge and the front fill speakers were right next to me.......TALK ABOUT EMOTION AND INTENSE. WOW!!!
I'm 64...I grew up through the original. I listen to most genres. I am now a Disturbed Fan. I've listened to so many of theirs now. Watched interviews and hes Very Soft spoken and a very intelligent, honest man. SOS is now my nightly Lullaby before bed.. Favorites...Down with the sickness....Are You Ready.....Land of Confusion. Hold on to the Memories....Prayer....Light....and so many others. So dont give up on us elderly....we really arent that decrepit 🤯🙄😆🤣😂
60 yrs young and fell in love with Disturbed when they sang Down With the Sickness. But this cover BLEW ME AWAY!!! His talent is phenomenal, I don't think I'll ever get tired of this EPIC cover
I'm old lol and I have never liked a cover song better than the original until Disturbed did this one. They made this song their own. I think they were able to convey the meaning of the song so much better than Simon and Garfunkel . I'm not taking anything away from them though. I love their version too, I just like Disturbed's version better! Great react video!
This is definitely one of the greatest covers ever made. The first time I heard Down With the Sickness is when my son played it for me. He was shocked when I burst out crying toward the end. Listening to that little boy getting beaten and beaten, terrorized and betrayed by his own parent, was gut wrenching. I wanted to jump into the song and save him. But it was too late. The abuse warped and broke him and he welcomed the chance to destroy himself and her. This is how monsters are made and that song shows us exactly how it happens. Brilliant, raw genius.
Goosebumps!! .....as I always do! I obviously prefer this version.....lol... David Draiman... A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction Ewan.
Upon hearing this version Paul Simon is reported to have said The song I sang was a warning... The song David sang was the anger at ignoring that warning.
I'm 69 years old and heard S&G version and yes I loved it. BUT nothing can be better than Disturbeds version. It poignant and means so much in this day and age. David's voice is incredible. Do I like their other songs, you betcha. Liking or disliking this version and their other music has nothing to do with age but state of mind
Another older person who absolutely loves this amazing version. Me...it makes me cry....and I think its because the original was ( or sounded) so sweet...and this version reflects the actual meaning of the words...which is not hopeful (although I like that the video portrays the music coming to the people....but will they listen????)
As another "older" person, I find this one by far the best. You feel this version, which as good as the original was, you didn't. Not to this extent. The people who commented that the first was the warning and this the anger when it wasn't heeded, nailed it exactly!
Nice reaction Evan! I think you might be surprised about how many of us older people, Not only like this version but feel that David is finally getting the msg across of the true meaning of this great classic song written by Paul back in the 60's. Where as Paul always felt this song came out a little more light hearted not really defining the words he was trying to teach us at the time. Overall doesn't really matter the age, This version seems to touch everyone, There may be some but thinking not many didn't get goose bumps along with maybe a tear or two while listening/watching this version. David's vocals are amazing & take in the music arrangement & atmosphere of the video, Amazing! Of course the original will always be iconic, But David's version is expressing how much time has gone by, Yet we as the human race still haven't figured it out! Really happy that you enjoyed this, Just subscribed & looking forward to seeing what all you react too. Thanks, Kevin from Canada Stay Safe!
Kudos to you for your frigging ❤ touching review, your expressions listening are right with the fantastic voice David has ! I am an older person a 1955 model , I always liked S&G but Disturbed gives me chills , this song should be required listening in all schools, sadly S&G tried to warn us but naturally everyone had their ears and eyes tightly closed , the lyrics surely describe what has happened to all in this universe 💔
Thank you for your comments, I loved your reaction to this cover, so much symbolism in this cover, I am a child of the 60's when Simon & Garfunkel released the original in 1964 I was in high school, back then I considered it kind of country-ish, I liked it but the message didn't pierce the soul (okay so I'm 74). This cover by Disturbed along with the video is the "BEST" it touches your soul and really gets S&G message to the core of my being and many others too, goosebumps and tears every time. "Neon God" in the 60's TV the advancement of technology NOW there is so many more especially cell phones. Suggestion = The official video by Disturbed “Hold On To Memories” was released Jan 23rd 2020. “Hold on to Memories" is about not only honoring those we’ve lost, but also making the most of our time with those we still have.
I'm an "older person" also, and I'm here to tell you that, not only is this without a doubt the best ever rendition of this song, but it's the cover that let me to my favorite metal band. I'm a fan of Metallica, but they've taken second spot to Disturbed. My next favorite by them is "Reason to Fight", followed by "The Vengeful One", and the list just goes on from there. Thank you for an awesome reaction video!
I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel singing Sound of Silence and I've always thought it was a beautiful song. But when I heard Disturbed do this version I was blown away especially knowing they usually did heavy metal. David's voice is absolutely amazing. I think it gives everyone chills when they first hear it. Great reaction.
The original has been on my playlist for ever, but this replaced it in a heartbeat. Draiman doesn't just sing the words, he smashes them into your soul. Greatest cover ever? I'd say so .
I'm 60 and I love this version of it and apparently so does the original singer Paul Simon he has it on his playlist that says a lot about how they did it well done guys
I'm 73 and in my young, young days when this song came out, all I heard was the beautiful song. The message got completely by me. This cover showcasing David's voice and the unique sound of Disturbed, blasted me with the message I missed the first time around. I don't know, maybe it's just me but when I watch a reaction, I also like to watch the video along with it. The writing across the video, "Disturbed TSOS - First Time Listening," distracted from everything. Other than that, I enjoyed your critique.
I am 76. I remember when the song came out. I heard and saw this version and called my younger son to watch it that I had heard the original and did not understand it but now I DO.
@@royreynolds108 I hear ya! Maybe I was just immature, I don't know. As you did, I think I'll ask my son about it. He's 50 and I'm sure he's familiar with Disturbed. I welcome his thoughts. It's pretty heavy!
Another 'older' person here who remember's the original vividly on the radio-waves. I loved that version, Simon & Garfunkle are very talented men. Btw, Did you know singer Paul Simon was married to Princess Laia from Star Wars, in real life.
Another older person voting for this cover. Makes me cry and is so filled with emotion. Simon and Garfunkel surely wrote a fantastic song, David takes it to a higher level.
Another "older person" here...I always liked the Simon and Garfunkel version. When my 30 yr. old son insisted I listen to Disturbed's cover of it, (not being a huge fan of Heavy Metal Rock) I was skeptical. OMGOSH!!! It BLEW me away--especially their music video! The visuals along with the vocals are absolutely stunning! Even so, I still like and appreciate the original. In fact, when Pentatonix released their cover of "The Sound of Silence", I was also VERY impressed with it! I can honestly say I love all three versions! Each one is superb in its own way! I enjoyed watching your reaction video and look forward to seeing more!
When I first saw this video and heard David Draiman’s voice I cried like a baby. The way he made you feel the song deep in your soul. As a kid I always felt original version was sweet yet very creepy with the soft voices. To think that it was written so long ago and it mirrors what’s going on in our world today. You gotta give it to Paul Simon for this song, pure genius 🔥
David Draiman is a classically trained singer and was cantor in Synagogue before going the heavy Metal route. My Father who is a cantor heard this version of the song when he was 75 and loved it. He never said which version he prefered. However I love both They are to me 2 different songs
As a child this song was one of my favourites, Now as an old person I have Simon & Garfunkel’s version on my playlist on my phone. Then I heard Disturbed’s version. I never thought anything could replace my love for the original, but David Draiman’s voice gives me chills. I found out he’s classically trained and this might be an unpopular opinion, but I think he is wasting his talent singing heavy metal. I would love to hear him sing some more classics. Another cover you might enjoy, is one that Evanescence have recently done of Lennon’s Across the Universe. It is seriously amazing. Amy Lee took a song that was already so beautiful and turned it into a masterpiece. Check it out
I always enjoyed this song by Simon and Garfunkle but the happy go lucky music and tone of the song never matched the lyrics for me. Disturbed's version is one of my all time favorite songs ever. Paul Simon's reaction to this cover spoke volumes and deppened my respect for both artists. Thanks for the reaction!
This may be a little late but I felt I had to stand up for us oldies. Also something like 750+ million views are on You Tube and on viewing a lot of them NOT ONE irrespective of age, gender or colour have said anything bad in fact all praised it. There is a channel on You Tube called Tribal something, they are a group of I think Pakistanis (men and women) who have been trying out Western food, culture etc., and they played this to them and they liked it complimenting David Draiman on his voice. As you can see from Melly Lynch's comment she liked it and so do I. I was around when S&G put out the original version. I found their harmonies good and the song 'pretty' but I think Disturbed's version is the better of the two when you take into account the lyrics. This is not a pretty song it is a warning song written by Paul Simon just after President Kennedy was assissinated. Also Paul was impressed by their cover and told David Draiman that he had put a link on his Social Media pages to Disturbed's version. You cannot get a better wrap than have the writer do that. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
56 year old US Army Cold War Veteran here, loved the S&G original but always felt the melody never matched the message, nor the way they sang it. Disturbed’s cover blew me away, gave me goosebumps, and took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions. I’m not ashamed to say it even made me tear up. I like this cover much more than the original, in my opinion this is how it should have been sung originally.
That was one of the better reactions to the song I have seen Ewan. I could tell you were really moved. First time on your channel, and I really enjoyed it.
I prefer this version. This version makes me feel the song . Not long after hearing this version and tearing up I heard the original in car. It was awful compared to this.
What amazes me is that this version reminds me of the world today. Our texts, emails and even emojis for emotions clearly show how the neon God has taken from us our interactions as humans. No talking, etc. I completely agree that S &G's version was the warning. David brings the anger and frustration that the warning went unheeded. Simon himself said this was the best cover ever done and said that it was now as much David's song as it was his. High praise from the original songwriter.
I was around when Simon and Garfunkle released this song and I loved it but nothing compares to Disturbs version (my new favourite) David's voice is absolutely awesome!!
I think you were in error suggesting that many older people would prefer the original S&G version of this. I've watched dozens of reaction videos for this song, and never saw one comment about S&G's being better. I am 64, and prefer this one -- although I see no real reason to choose. They are two different styles, and can be appreciated for different reasons. I like what *Melly* said 8 mos. ago, i.e., that "[t]his version demands that you LISTEN." It does, and I have, many, many times.
I am an older person, born in the 50's, and never understood the love of the original. It was good and all but I would consider this version great and is the only one I listen to when I want to hear this song.
You should check out PENTATONIX version of The Sound Of Silence. Two different interpretations, both amazing Renditions. People try to compare them, but they each put their own personal spin on it. I LOVE both versions, and the original as well. Fun reaction!
I'm 70, and this version really makes you listen to the lyrics. And his voice! The range he has and the power shows the frustration and anger that the world is worse now than when the original version was written. BUT I am one of the many that thinks the live Conan version is better. And the fact that David Draiman was sick and running a temperature when performing this on Conan is just amazing. ♥️
Never really liked the S&G original version, then, when I heard Disturbed do their cover...I've never looked back - totally hooked on it! Some have tried to copy Disturbeds version and have sucked at it! I've generally gone with the view that Original is Always Best with the odd exception - this being one of them!!!! I first heard this version on a video World in Lockdown at the begining of the C-19 Pandemic during the UK's first lockdown and thankfully that RUclips video has the link to the Disturbed official audio video, my neighbours just have gone down with sickness of me CONSTANTLY playing this version REPEATEDLY for HOURS AND FOR DAYS AND WEEKS!!!!
Haha I love Disturbed as well!
60 yrs young and fell in love with Disturbed when they sang Down With the Sickness. But this cover BLEW ME AWAY!!! His talent is phenomenal, I don't think I'll ever get tired of this EPIC cover
This is just the greatest. I am 73 and think this is the way the song was meant to be sung.
Much as I like Simon and Garfunkel I think Disturbed's superb darker interpretaion suits the lyric better.
I would love to hear this for the first time again
You need to see David Live on Conan O' Brian Show !!!!
As another "older" person, I find this one by far the best. You feel this version, which as good as the original was, you didn't. Not to this extent. The people who commented that the first was the warning and this the anger when it wasn't heeded, nailed it exactly!
Nice reaction Evan!
I think you might be surprised about how many of us older people, Not only like this version but feel that
David is finally getting the msg across of the true meaning of this great classic song written by Paul back in the 60's.
Of course the original will always be iconic,
But David's version is expressing how much time has gone by, Yet we as the human race still haven't figured it out!
Really happy that you enjoyed this, Just subscribed & looking forward to seeing what all you react too.
Thanks, Kevin from Canada
Stay Safe!
I think there are a lot of us older music fans that get the rage he evokes. So important for what is happening now.
I’ve never really liked the original version but when I heard this I had chills and goosebumps. So powerful, absolutely love it 😍
David Draiman is a classically trained singer and was cantor in Synagogue before going the heavy Metal route.
Check it out
Im 54 and Im going with Disturbeds version. It reaches right in there and rips out your soul.
Loved watching your eyes bug! Shared your goosebumps. My favorite version, too.
Now listen to them perform it LIVE on the CONAN O'BRIEN SHOW
Simon & Garfunkel have since come out said this song is no longer theirs. David delivered the message how it was supposed to be.
Saw them live at Red Rocks in Colorado. He sang this song and it was amazing. They even made an album of the concert.
While the original is passionatly introspective, this version is more like making love to the lyrics, dwelling on each phrase in turn.
I was around when Simon and Garfunkle released this song and I loved it but nothing compares to Disturbs version (my new favourite) David's voice is absolutely awesome!!
"Wow" is definitely the word most used in reactions to this performance.
Has anyone suggested his live version on Conan? If not, you'd be in for a mind blowing treat.
Older and love this version!
I am 63 yrs old and I agree with you young man, this is definitely the best version. Very moving song. 😊
Fun reaction!
you need to check out the live performance on Conan
I'm 70, and this version really makes you listen to the lyrics. And his voice! The range he has and the power shows the frustration and anger that the world is worse now than when the original version was written. BUT I am one of the many that thinks the live Conan version is better. And the fact that David Draiman was sick and running a temperature when performing this on Conan is just amazing. ♥️
David's voice is so amazing because he used to be a Jewish Cantor.
Your eyes are so expressive and that says everything. Thank you for your reaction.
I hope the video played for you because the images are equally as poetic and delivers a different message that I didn’t even realize. Great review!
Another amazing cover is Johnny Cash doing the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" - it is epic!
Paul Simon wrote "two" of my favorite songs!
I'm an older person and loved Disturbed already but this song blew me away. Older version never was my cup of tea.
I loved your reaction. Thank you for taking me along for the ride.
I recommend the Live version from Conan as well. Paul Simon emailed the band after seeing the performance. I promise, it's epic. David Draiman is 🔥🖤🔥🖤
And he sang that when he was sick, if he recall.
Lol! I'm a first time viewer of you and your channel - I'm now off to view some more of your channel content!...Question is, do I subscribe????....
Best Version of this Song , Full Stop .
With Great Power , comes Great Responsibility , David . Lmao .
There's an interview here on RUclips where he discusses the making of it and why that's fascinating.
You nailed that reaction ♥️
If you’d like to see more of his vocal skills, take a listen to Disturbed’s song “Uninvited Guest”. I absolutely adore it.
The studio version is amazing but if you get the chance, listen to the live Conan version it is truly next level. You will not be sorry.
I agree... the live version is my favorite!!!
With a full orchestra, you are not wrong at all. So powerfull.
They have done a few covers over the years there was Shout from Tears For Fears and Phil Collins Land Of Confusion, and this one.
I’m old. I like this one equally.
Great reaction, man.. "live" on Conan version is now obligatory. Both are stunning, but live... obligatory. peace.
The message from God is clear in this song....
Loved your reaction!
Completely enjoyed your reaction!!
Fantastic cover, fantastic control of voice. Love this cover. I love some of the modern singers doing covers. Check out The live cover of Cher's Believe by Adam Lambert at the Kennedy Center Honors.
I'm an old fart and I Love these boys! The way he sings it is fantastic 😍
This version is my favorite version. Its powerful it makes me feel something. The original is ok but to demure in my opinion. I get an asmr response every time I listen to this.
This song is a message for today,it penetrates the soul.
Great review. And as an old lady I love this interpretation much more than the original.
