When i found out i had a fear of the ocean was when i was a young one watching finding nemo and they dive down into the deep dark water swimming down along the wall, the submarine one also got to me.
glad to know im npt the only one who figured out I had a fear of the ocean by watching finding nemo as a kid. Absolutely hated the part where the ship starts to sink and it pans away to show the entire thing.
I find the whale scene terrifying. Like them in the middle of the big, wide ocean with no other fishes around them. Then the whale coming up slowly behind them, and sucking them into his mouth 😨
Murky or clear, kelp forest or coral reef, tropical or freezing artic waters, fear of the ocean isn't irrational, once you're in the water, you're in the food chain, and you are no where near the top. Text book definition of rational fear.
10000% agree though it makes me think of the fear just looking at these videos and pics evokes, maybe that's the irrational part? Fear of the ocean when you're landlocked? *shrug* srsly tho you're bang on about being in it
Sure, that certainly makes sense when it comes to the ocean, but the irrational part is when this fear extends to small bodies of water that contain little to no danger, other than drowning of course.
@@ManivanAdventures True but we're talking about Thalassophobia which is an irrational fear of large bodies of water. Small bodies with little or no danger would be Aquaphobia. There's plenty of variations on the theme though, fear of what's below the waterline, fear of creatures in the deep ocean etc.
@@gs8494 Fair enough. What I meant to type is “smaller” bodies of water. I guess one could make the argument that Lake Michigan is a large body of water, even though it is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the ocean. Some, including myself, consider Lake Tahoe in California a large body of water too, even though it is under 200mi², compared to Lake Michigan’s 22,400mi². It is the second deepest lake in the US at 1,645ft after all. That makes for a pretty expansive body of water. But there is nothing lurking in the depths of either of these lakes that can seriously hurt humans, so I would say it is irrational to fear that. I don’t know the technical terms really. I just know that being in dark water when I cannot see the bottom and seeing distant or large objects in murky water creep me out, whether I’m in the ocean or just a small backyard pond. Lol
“That a Dolphin? Nope that’s the DEVIL!” -Truer words have never been said. Also do more claustrophobia videos. Just watched yours and I was actually freaking out. Never thought that could happen to me.
As a kid, I dove under a raft that we had at our family cottage on a small lake with some goggles on. Seeing the chain that anchored the raft to the lakebed disappear into the depths freaked me out so much and even today as a 34 year old, it still gives me the chills when I think about it. It makes no sense to me and I know that I am a strong swimmer far from danger, but for some reason just thinking about that makes me feel very uneasy, even when is was only in about 15ft of water. The strangest thing is that I used to have no problem jumping off the boat in the middle of the lake as a kid and just slowly started developing this fear later in life somehow. The human brain is very interesting to say the least…
I think part of what makes these videos so popular is your genuine reaction you’re not over the top like most RUclipsrs that over react in order to get more views you really relate to others who have this phobia and it’s awesome to have someone react as most people would
I found you because I was watching cave diving footage, so just know that you are now associated with the ocean. You've become the thing you've feared most

Hello from Germany! I remember exactly where my thalassophobia started. I was a kid and was playing Tomb Raider 2. There was a part on an oil rig with a deep black pool. I was diving to the ground when suddenly a little submarine appeared. It scared the living shit out of me. Since then I'm so scared of deep dark water. It's so hard even to look at pictures but I really like your videos and I'm glad there is someone out there who feels exactly the same. Greetings from Germany 😄
7:58 the bubbles are caused by humpbacks blowing bubbles in a circle around a group of fish to trap them, meaning that there are humpbacks below the diver
If you can get 3 or so extra people you should try out barotrauma, its a game where you're on one of Jupiter's moons and you control a submarine well trying to complete missions. Its a really good game with friends and is really horrifying even for people without a fear of the ocean.
i go back and rewatch this series of videos all the time, must've contributed about 100 views or more to these videos alone! love this series so much for torturing myself, especially with Greg's reactions
speaking of HORRIFYING, the shark flashlight one right after the "hole in the ocean" vid? IT'S SO DARK BUT THEN THE FLASHLIGHTS JUST SWIRL AROUND ALL THESE SHARKS. absolute terror
I subbed a few weeks ago, and I'm very glad I have. I'm a SCUBA diver, but even I still have trouble with those deep waters where it just goes down into an abyss. A couple of those videos where the camera pans down and there's just nothing but The Deep absolutely made me wince. And that thing with the lightning and tentacles - I was absolutely cringing in "nope!" right there with you. I love diving, but no way in hell am I ever going in a cave, and even a lotta shipwrecks give me the "fuck no" vibe.
the 8:02 bubbles really reminded me of the bubble net humpback whales (often in numbers) form to corral fish before surfacing from the dark depth into the delicious mass... mouths wide open.
I appreciate that even though these videos make you uncomfortable, you are willing to watch them and provide commentary. And you have a really good working knowledge of all things water - creatures, ships, etc.

You popped up in my feed, and I am so happy that you did. Because I too look up deep ocean/great white sharks to scare myself at night for no damn reason. Sometimes tornadoes to switch it up.
I have over 50 hours played in Sea of Thieves with my friends. Many times I had to just press esc and turn away from the screen because I was in the water or drowning or the ship got downed. I couldn't dive for the treasure to help my friends and I could barely cross some islands. It was only fun while I was on an island or we weren't pursued. My few interactions with a kraken have always led to me hiding downstairs and patching up. I am NEVER fighting it upstairs again after it grabbed me and I was in that murky water next to its giant tentacle. Same with Megaladons, but, since you can out run them, I have been feeling a bit better. If you have a similar fear to me, never leave the goddamn map. I had to shut the game, because it made me panic every single time it happened.

Somebody tell him the same thing is in Arizona, completely above sea level. Where we hoomans are suppose to be. There's a reason we have legs Sir...it's called the ground , and dirt and mud.
Omg I could watch these videos for hours. I think the next one you should do to see the first/earliest phobia pic or video from the site that you go to. #thalassophobia
Yours is the only channel I occasionally watch, where I can never watch a video all the way through. Always have to look away for a few seconds or at least cover my eyes a bit.
Once years ago I was out on my boat on 4th of July and I got caught in the middle of a thunder and lightning storm. I was lost at sea and it took me several hours to find my way back to the shore. It was before the days of smart phones. I didn't have any other proper GPS. It was nothing but aloneness and panic. At one point I went the wrong way for around 2 hours and had to turn around meanwhile lightning striking the water off in the distance.
You should try swimming/boating in the Great Lakes. The vastness is still terrifying, but at least there’s no sea creatures to worry about. And the water isn’t murky and there’s not seaweed touching your leg, like with many small inland lakes. Highly recommend for fellow thalassophobiacs, especially if you’re wanting to more safely (compared to the ocean) face your fear. (For a shallow beginner lake try Lake Erie, if you want to level up, go to Lake Michigan (much more picturesque than Erie), and when you’re ready, Lake Superior is truly invigorating.)
have you ever seen the crossing of the parted red sea scene in the animated prince of egypt movie? the animation is insanely good but it really triggers thalassaphobia!
the Kayak VR game is actually super nice, if you can get over the motion sickness of VR headsets :') it's not all stormy, and it's great physics for splashing about in!

Oh Jesus that sounds terrifying
4:32 looks like a backrooms level XD
the Kayak VR game is actually super nice, if you can get over the motion sickness of VR headsets :') it's not all stormy, and it's great physics for splashing about in!
I have an Extreme fear of water, But only the deep water scares me, Because you don't know what is it under you or around you.
