  • We visited Canada's Lake Louise ski resort in late December to get some powdery early-season turns in, but the extraordinarily frigid temperatures caught us off guard.
Lake Louise is located in the province of Alberta about two-and-a-half hours northwest of Calgary. It is one of the Banff SkiBig3 resorts. A full review of this mountain will be out soon!

Wait until March to ski Lake Louise. Skied here in 2018 and it was the best ski trip of my life. The resort has everything terrain wise and the snow preservation is superb. Can't wait to see your update later in the season. The lifts could use some upgrades but I believe they are in the process of doing this. Sorry to see the summit platter get removed last year, lift was a challenge to ride. The Banff National Park scenery is unmatched in the world. The town of Banff is also close enough to get a full apres ski and dining experience. One of Canada's great resorts.

I've skied in conditions like this a few times. Jay Peak had to be the coldest ever at temperatures of -30F. They shut down all the higher lifts due to "extreme temperatures."
I had a Lake Louise ski trip booked for late January/early February, but I'm in the process of moving to late March/beginning of April. Longer days, I'm sure slightly warmer temperatures!

I have skied in these temperatures in Wisconsin and the UP for several years. It isn't great, but with the right mindset and equipment is doable.

When the cold snaps come it is always colder in Banff vs B.C. Banff is best skied in the Spring. They even sell a March-April season pass. The best early season skiing in western Canada is usually Sun Peaks B.C. They are almost always the first to open in the B.C. interior, a few days before USA Thanksgiving in late Nov, 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the rest of the B.C. interior. Sun Peaks has some snow making but it is 30+ years of summer grooming that is the main reason for the great early season conditions. Rocks have been picked, pretty much every stump on the mountain has been pulled, grass planted, and weeds and small conifers get cut on runs on a 3 to 5 year rotation. I have seen on occasion, a slow start to the season with only an 18" compacted base, but 100+ runs open. Also, with skiing on both sides of a valley on 2 mountains and 2 ridges, you would be hard pressed to name a mountain in North America that spreads skiers out better than Sun Peaks. Also locals don't show up in noticeable numbers until Dec 26 or 27.

We’ll, let’s just say the temps of this vid came true for our ongoing trip to Banff lol. -30s every day we ski and tomorrow looks like the same. Lots of fresh snow and lots of layers help though😅

Lake Louise skis best mid February to early April. I think the timing of your next trip will be really good. Alberta is definitely one of the coldest places in North America ski country, and it is especially cold in La Nina winters. The conditions you experienced aren't typical, but they aren't that rare either. We get brutal cold snaps every winter, and sometimes multiple times per winter. It's not a big deal for locals...we can suck it up or wait for things to warm up, but it is really rough for tourists. I can't imagine travelling from a tropical destination...and if lifts are closed due to the cold, your skunked no matter your tolerance. Late season is a safer bet....and coverage is always better late season too. Come to the Canadian Rockies to extend winter when southern resorts are moving towards spring skiing!

Temperatures that low could also harm you're car oil becomes syrup like at those temperatures and may not flow enough to properly lubricated you're engine, coolant will also freeze if its not mixed properly. There is a reason why alot of people plug in their car when it gets that cold and many of the motels in the area even the crazy expensive ones don't have outdoor plugs.

There's no weather you can't dress or prepare for. It's often sunny when temps dip that low. Layers, high quality gloves, toe/hand warmer packs should keep you outdoors to -45 C. That being said you have to keep moving or your core temp will quickly plummet and become uncomfortable.
