My late Mum, who lived in Shipley, worked in Saltaire Mill until she met my father, who was a boatman working for the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Company. He lived in Lathom, Nr. Ormskirk and it was on his trips to Leeds that he met my Mum. They married at Shipley register office in December, 1935 and I was born at Ring O' Bells in Septemer, 1936, so your videos have a special place in my family history. Thanks for the memories!
Guyz..... The production values just improve week on week! Great drone footage and accompanying music. Oh, the local history stories are equally a delight. Keep up the excellent work.....
Wow when the construction of these locks was underway our country New Zealand had just been sighted by Captain James Cook of the British Navy in 1769 he made 3 trips his last in 1779 he went on to map both islands, however he was not the first European to discover New Zealand Dutch explorer Able Janszoon Tasman first sighted the West coast of the South Island in December 1642 however he missed the North Island due too bad weather and headed NW he called the place Zeeland. Yet another great narrow boat journey boys awesome video.
Another beautifully produced video. I'm one of the silent majority who don't comment, but decided to take this opportunity to thank you two...err, 3 including Dillon, for allowing the rest of us to share your journey. Always look forward to seeing the notification. Again, thank you.
BEST VLOG EVER......! You should really contact British Tourism about sponsoring your vlogs and putting a solid link to your channel on their website for international tourism. Have a wonderful weekend !
Another very informative and well filmed vlog. I love the little snippets of history or the way the locks work or the factories in the area etc, that you provide with your commentary, so not only do we get to see the wonderful scenery, but we also get a little of the history of the area as well......thank you both very much, always very enjoyable. PS....I could do with some of those long johns....rather chilly here....:)
I look forward to your vlogs every week! Love the stories about history of the canals you travel on, love the videos, love the humor! Sending you hugs from the USA! Your vlogs are a nice escape from the daily craziness over here.
Ahh Colín you know how to float my boat. The stunning beauty of the location , the Bingley Flight , the wonderful nuggets of history and superb videography. Lovely Friday night viewing.
Great vlog again, chaps. Beautiful scenery, via drone and a lovely history lesson, for the uninitiated. Titus Salt built a school; medical centre; library; church; a social hall and houses for his workforce. The working day was shorter and he paid his workers more money and he STILL made more money than other mill owners. He knew it was the workers who were important, when running a business. Unfortunately, the Titus Salts of this world are few and far between, these days. x
@@FoxesAfloat The only down side was that he had a hatred of alcohol consumption. There's always bloody something wrong with even the best of people! ;) x
Oh this brings back memories. When I was 16, in 1981, I went up and down the Bingley five rise. The lock keeper was quite young and extremely handsome, and he wore a uniform. The family I travelled with had two teenage girls and we were all doing our best to attract his attention. I was showing off winding the gate paddle up really fast and then swung the lock key around, but it flew up and went into the lock. They cost a fiver back then, and I was put on brew-making duties for the rest of the trip.
Your camera and editing work is superb, Colin and Shaun’s humor uplifting as always. I really look forward to the next vlog on Fridays. Keep safe with a minimum of stress!
Funny how much joy it is to follow you guys. I love the little detail views, some of them would be great pictures also, very creative. Stumbled over your channel half a year ago and follow since. Greetings from a small village east of Munich.
I believe I first read it in one of the books written by James Herriot. It was when I still thought I was going to be a veterinarian. Before I learned of my inability to remain conscious at the sight of blood. You are close to the setting of the books - about an hour Northeast in Thirsk.
Once again you put a smile on my face, you produce some of the most beautifully done videos, the music is wonderful , the narrations appreciated, and the scenery stunning. Your humor gives me a laugh. Thank you for making my Fridays special.
Today was a sad anniversary for me and the weather here was chill and rainy. This video was just the ticket to drag me out of my funk and deliver me to warmer days along a beautiful canal with smiling faces and the biggest damn tea beakers I think I've ever seen. Thank you, gentlemen. I needed that!
I absolutely love your videos and the history lessons. I will probably never get over the pond to Great Britain. I love history and landscape. Thank you guys.
I forgot to mention the great canal and architecture history background Foxes provide in their vlogs, it really helps keep everything in perspective. Much appreciated!
I showed my partner your last vlog and I think it is going to cost me a holiday on the Leeds and Liverpool canal, if I show her this one it might cost me a boat :) A really beautiful part of the world. The British Tourist Board need to get you two on a retainer.
What a great relationship you two have. Like everybody else I look forward to your new vlog every Friday. I mentioned recently you were helping me through a tough time and you still are. Thanks very much to both of you. A bit of escapism is just what I need.
I had two, two!!! bacon and cheese sandwiches while watching this video. The cheese was melty cheese slices, the brand is hillview or something like that and the bacon is short cut rindless (people from the USA call it "Canadian Bacon"). And the bread was toasted. It was very satisfying and filling. So I was both filled and satisfied while watching your video! :)
Isn't it amazing looking at those locks built 245 years ago. Do you think for 1 second that those workers thought about us admiring there labor all these years later. I can't imagine how honored they'd be if they new. I could spend hours just looking at all the individual stones trying to imagine what it must have been like. I could use some of that long underwear, it was only 111 degrees here in Scottsdale Arizona today. Another great blog from two awesome people. Love you guys. Dean
Foxes Afloat the bottom lock when it emptied left the boat stuck on the bottom as I entered because it was so shallow. So my husband Ivan shut the back gates and opened the paddles on the bottom gate of the middle lock to raise the water level! I wasn’t very keen when the water was cascading down into the lock towards the boat but thankfully we only had a 50 boat so there was loads of space at the front. It was an interesting day because on the 5 rise the lock keeper said he was bringing a boat up as we descended and that we would pass in the middle lock, as I pulled in they pulled out. The only problem was we were both on the same side and because my boat was shorter they decided I should move across, even though I had hardly any experience! Obviously it was a perfect manoeuvre and there was no contact with the other boat. To make matters worse I’d invited friends that live in Halifax over for the day so they could also experience the five rise too. So no pressure! 😁 It was a great day and everyone loved it. We’re back to hiring now as we sold our boat in February. The plan was to buy something longer but as we haven’t seen anything we really like (apart from brand new) and because we are just leisure boaters, we think we’ll go back to hiring. Goodness this is a long message! Anyway what I wanted to say is we’re hiring from Andersen in Middlewich so we can do the Anderton boat lift. Let s hope we don’t get stuck in there! I love Saltaire too and there are some great shops. I got a 1930s brooch which is made of tin and is two Scottie dogs with wobbly heads. Well Ivan treated me 😁. Did you make it to Granary Wharf? Thanks again.
Wow what a day you both had.. great vlog as per, I really look forward to your vlogs as, It gives me a glimpse of the English countryside, I do miss the green and lush woodlands ect, here in Perth WA it very spare and lots of sand.. keep up the great work boys. Tez 😋
Greetings from India! Your vlog came up into my feed probably because I have been following David Johns and his marvellous vlog about living on a Narrowboat for a while now and I am glad it did. The Bingley Five Rise locks were really interesting, the history too. Good to know about Barry Whitelock, the lock keeper who got a MBE for his service. The drone camera work gave a different perspective to the locks and the countryside along the canal. Wish you all the best for your future endeavours.
I used to commute by bike from Thackley to Crossflatts along the canal and the five rise was a challenge! The tow path up the side is split into sections with lines of cobbles and I started by reaching the first line, then the second until I was fit enough to peddle up the complete section without stopping. I probably took as long on my bike as using the locks! The Bingley bypass meant the loss of Treacle Cock alley, a pathway that went under the railway. Sir Titas Salt was a teetotaler and there were no pubs in Saltaire so it was a bit of a issue when a pub chain called one of their establishments in Bradford after him!
Great video....love the local and architectural history. Bit worried about the bilge pump...it should come on automatically but if not it has to come on manually. Suggest you check it out cause you don’t really need a bilge pump until you really really need it...just sayin’ ...all the best...Chris 🇨🇦
Some beautiful and skilful editing mixed with the background music and storytelling once again makes this a masterpiece of entertainment to enjoy. What a superb channel you two produce.... life wouldn't be the same without 'Foxes Afloat'.
Fanbloodytastic episode! Great photo of you two from 2004 too. My old school was just to the right of the Damart Mill. That would be around 1970 though! Saltaire has been cleaned up since I was last there too. Thanks😃
Great video as always entertaining and informative. Saltaire canal side looks fantastic a place I've always wanted to visit. Isn't the Barbara Hepworth Museum near by. I've seen so often the canal, railway and road all using the easyest route, shame one of trains passing was the much derided Pacer. Nice to see Dillon appears to have fully recovered from his dentistry and to see he's not the only canine companion to have kept you company on your travels on the canal network.
When we have structures submerged in water lasting 200 years + that have the ability to work and operate for industrial use thru to holiday boating, without major issues, it ceases to amaze me... Architecture now just isn't architecture anymore, it's a costing exercise with thought over longevity disregarded. Such a joy to see these canals we're well thought-out and built by tradesmen who took real joy in there job, and produced the amazing structures we cherish today!! Real do love all your videos! Highly regarded! Well done guys!!
I really love how you add so much historical commentary to your videos. I think England has such a proud heritage and as an American, I truly appreciate learning from your well researched and produced vid's. Please keep them coming along with the fine drone footage. You guy's totally ROCK! Thank You ;)
Great episode, beautiful scenery, and interesting lock engineering history. I especially liked the old photos. As always, thanks for letting us ride along.
Just been walking along the canal with dogs from Riddlesden down to th 3 rise past the 5 rise. Such a beautiful day. Then found your Bingley vlog!!! Incredible to think it was built before Australia was even discovered!!
Been excited for this episode! So glad it's here! You'll never get a negative comment from me! My family is in Bradford. We've walked here and I've even flown over 5 rise (rented a plane). Thanks for the lesson on the stables. Didn't know that trivia. .
Another cracking video guys - thanks very much. Sadly when we were on the L&L way back in 1981 we didn't have time to descend the Bingley Five Rise as we'd have needed to turn round straight away & go back up in order to return our hire boat to Skipton in time. We felt it would have been wrong to use up all that water !! Very interested to hear about all the other staircase locks too.
The first two sets of locks blew me away. Amazing to see the steep stairways along the first sets. 245 years old and STILL working. Wow! Thanks for sharing so many historical tidbits, too. Awesome story about the stables. Very enjoyable video!
Hello Friends, I thoroughly enjoyed all the historical bits. Loved the staircases, so interesting. I really didn't think you guys be more handsome, but that 2004 photo was very nice. You two have been together for quite some time. As usual, absolutely loved your vlog.Looking forward to the next. Blessings gentlemen.😍😍
What a great vlog today! I learned quite a lot about the history of the canals and their Seven Wonders, not to mention I now know where my thermal underwear came from! Thank you for that.
Cheers lads! Another accidental youtube channel find. That has eaten up hours of my evenings catching up.Beautiful boat , great vids and a likable pair of characters.Much better than any shite on telly.
Awesome as ever and so interesting. Thanks for all the effort you put into these vlogs. Highlight of my Friday morning. Hope Dillon is feeling better. Have a great week. 😎👍❤️🇨🇦
More brilliant stuff chaps. You do realise that I now have a list of places to and see and do. My wife and I are now planning to hire a boat next year and cruise through Yorkshire to see the beauty of last weeks vlog in the flesh as it were. Just added Bingley five rise as the next day out for us and the dog. Keep em coming chaps see you next week
Thank you Paul. You won't regret a narrowboat holiday on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, such a beautiful part of the country. You'll love a day out at Bingley, it's great to watch the boats going up and down the locks. See you next week 👍❤️
I've been in a pound lock in my dads boat , called foxton flight , with 7 locks , & it gave me backache lol as we were going up, I think alot of them lock gates need replacing badly , I've just been sat here eating a magnum while watching you & it was luvely lol , hehe .
I've just started watching you guys and I've been binge watching for the last two weeks. I love the vlogs and really enjoyed this one as I work in Salts Mill and was waiting for you guys to travel this way. Love the way you two do the vlog and it won't be long before I'm completely cought up. Keep up the great content.
Nobody Researched and delivered Fascinating local information like you do Colin. You guys Really did get me hooked on Narrowboating. We’ve learnt so much from you. Thankyou ❤
This video was a real treat. Your explanation of the three variations to a multiple lock sequence was fabulous, and the pieces of history you offer along your canal travels are very much appreciated. Thank you!
Beautiful editing Colin, really informative n entertaining guys. I was born n raised in Yorkshire so this trip is so nostalgic for me....thanks for sharing...
Thanks guys. I could tell the day was a lot of work for you. Plus you add the extra work to film and edit. The locks are older then my country. Be well and I am already looking forward to next week.

Hope putting the kettle distracted you from feeling a little stressed. 🤣🤣”glass kittens”. Never heard that one before. Glad all is ok and super to see Dillon back on his feet. Hope you enjoyed your not so exciting Sandwich 😉😂 Love and hugs as always. 💖🤗 Harriet

Aww, Michelle, thank you!
Great episode, beautiful scenery, and interesting lock engineering history. I especially liked the old photos. As always, thanks for letting us ride along.
No problem. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Thanks for adding the little historical bits, makes it interesting & a little different to other NB Vlogs. 👌🏾
Glad you like them!
So enjoyable thank you. Colin you were so cheerful. That is encouraging for us all ☺
Yeah, I was having a good few days 👍🏻
Just been walking along the canal with dogs from Riddlesden down to th 3 rise past the 5 rise. Such a beautiful day. Then found your Bingley vlog!!! Incredible to think it was built before Australia was even discovered!!
Weird to think about! 👍🏻
Been excited for this episode! So glad it's here! You'll never get a negative comment from me!
My family is in Bradford. We've walked here and I've even flown over 5 rise (rented a plane). Thanks for the lesson on the stables. Didn't know that trivia. .
No problem! Thanks 👍🏻
I like this guy!
Hey, Stephen! Agh! That must have been disappointing? x
The first two sets of locks blew me away. Amazing to see the steep stairways along the first sets. 245 years old and STILL working. Wow! Thanks for sharing so many historical tidbits, too. Awesome story about the stables. Very enjoyable video!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
I so look forward to Fridays! Another nice video. I'm amazed by the beauty of the countryside.
It gets a bit more industrial now...👍🏻
Hello Friends, I thoroughly enjoyed all the historical bits. Loved the staircases, so interesting. I really didn't think you guys be more handsome, but that 2004 photo was very nice. You two have been together for quite some time. As usual, absolutely loved your vlog.Looking forward to the next. Blessings gentlemen.😍😍
Thanks, Pamela. Yeah, we've been together almost 27 years ❤️
What a great vlog today! I learned quite a lot about the history of the canals and their Seven Wonders, not to mention I now know where my thermal underwear came from! Thank you for that.
No problem. Thansk for the comment, Tao! Have a lovely weekend.
Cheers lads! Another accidental youtube channel find. That has eaten up hours of my evenings catching up.Beautiful boat , great vids and a likable pair of characters.Much better than any shite on telly.
Aww, thank you, and WELCOME! Hug available if you want one 😉
Awesome as ever and so interesting. Thanks for all the effort you put into these vlogs. Highlight of my Friday morning. Hope Dillon is feeling better. Have a great week. 😎👍❤️🇨🇦
Thanks, Elaine 👍🏻 Yeah, Dillon is doing fine 🤩
Your both such a class act. Thanks for another brillant vlog you really show canals at their best. Xx
Thanks, Annie! x
I've been in a pound lock in my dads boat , called foxton flight , with 7 locks , & it gave me backache lol as we were going up, I think alot of them lock gates need replacing badly , I've just been sat here eating a magnum while watching you & it was luvely lol , hehe .
Mmmm... Would love a Magnum 😋
Awesome! Thank you!
Good day mates! The spillway shots always captivate me...the water tripping over itself, making lovely lapping lyrics...nice!
Yeah, I could do videos of just the stuff like that.
Nobody Researched and delivered Fascinating local information like you do Colin. You guys Really did get me hooked on Narrowboating. We’ve learnt so much from you. Thankyou ❤
Aww, thank you!
as usual a great vlog, thanks lads
Thanks, Hugh 👍🏻
This video was a real treat. Your explanation of the three variations to a multiple lock sequence was fabulous, and the pieces of history you offer along your canal travels are very much appreciated. Thank you!
Aww, thanks! Our pleasure.
Really like the different way us did things this time and the way you change to photo to show us the stable block as I might have looked. Thanks guys.
No problem. Thanks, Stephen!
Love these guys great clear footage as well.
Thank you Simon, glad you enjoy them 👍❤️
Brilliant as always .... I really do look forward to these vlogs.... Cheers Guys :)
Thanks, Alec!
That was a pleasant trip, course I was doing any of the work at the locks. Thanks for taking along.
👍🏻
Beautiful editing Colin, really informative n entertaining guys. I was born n raised in Yorkshire so this trip is so nostalgic for me....thanks for sharing...
Aww, thank you! 👍🏻
Thanks guys. I could tell the day was a lot of work for you. Plus you add the extra work to film and edit. The locks are older then my country. Be well and I am already looking forward to next week.
Thanks, Steve. See you next Friday!
brilliant guys I live about 10 mins from there ,,,yes its beautiful stay safe n take care of my boat lol
She's still looking good, Mick 👍🏻
Afternoon chaps. Another great vlog. I love the way the lock gates look like they have window boxes. Guess it’s a type of hydroponics. 💖🤗 Harriet
Thanks, Harriet! He's fine now 👍🏻
Another great vlog. So interesting. Thank you for all the research you do to give us the information about the areas you travel through. The drone footage was stunning. x
