Excellent, well done. Knowledge is power, i had a similar problem with a split manifold boot, so i went to my local auto electrician and purchased a large tube of heatshrink, cut a length to suit, and covered the boot and heated it up, its still going 5 years later.
I've got 4 "nos" inlet rubbers for this model complete with the inlet restriction webs which I and everybody used to cut out with a blade when I worked on these back in the day. I'll stick them on ebay this week
It would be interesting to see number 2 cylinder with a bore scope although Im 90% sure its tight valves. These 5 valve heads were always running tight when the mileage got up there. The owner probably was getting ripped off by other shops he dealt with, he has no reason to lie to you, hes just passing on the lies other techs are telling him!
let it be bro....he is balancing throttle bodies with 3 bars compression on the cylinder number 2....poor intake valves...burning away because he just couldnt take that stupid cover off and adjust those valves...to me..its a crime..superbike specialist....
Great result Jim can sense frustration with my ocd of customer having restraint on budget of not wanting valve clearance check to eliminate that on low compression on number 2 cyl shame but sure customer will notice a massive improvement over starting point 👌
what a pleasure it is to be in your workshop with you on these projects... what you call waffle works well for me. many thaks for your efforts and sharing you knowlege.
As the main jet needles were at one point lifted with the o-ring's (of which three were lost), I would not be surprised if it also has a +4 degree ignition advancer fitted, so it will need a bit more fuel than a standard bike, not 4 turns out kind of fueling though or it then needs re-jetting. Makes you wonder who has been let loose on this bike before.
Nice job . I would be happy with that work done . Miles better running .. just out of interest would you do a full restoration for your channel . Would help it channel grow i would imagine
It would be a great thing to do, and I'm sure it'd get lots of interest. Unfortunately, it's just too much of a time suck doing that type of work. The only way it'd possibly work would be if it was a paying customer. Unfortunately, not many people have pockets that deep!

Hi! New guy here. I really like the way you work, your though structure and the experience you've got as a mechanic. I have a question that troubles my mind a little bit: since one cylinder is really poor on compression, couldn't that be a bad-incomplete combustion factor, hence the richer result in the exhaust gas readings? Excellent videos, thanks! (I already joined your club, RUclips keeps suggesting all kinds of crap, but sometimes you find treasure right in front of you).
Hi Jim how was your exhaust sensor fitted to the exhaust was it clamped on the rear pipe or did you use a socket to bolt it into . Only asking because I'm looking at one like you have and a lot of my bikes don't have sockets in the headers Good work as always .
My manager who repairs motorcycles says that's how he gets tough rubbers on. I've seen people use extra big heatshrink for carb boots with tears in them.
Good stuff Jim. how far in the exhaust do you have the innovate AFR 02. i have used a piece of copper pipe to get as close to header junction as possible.
@robbateman7987 I wouldn't want to say for certain. From the experiments I've done, it seems that somewhere, just over the length of the silencer seems to be the magic length. It also seems way less critical once you are above idle.
It is hard Jim to know when to call it a day, boss always pulls me up when i go too deep. We always take with a pinch of salt the work supposedly done, it does pull the end bill up but we can prove that the info was incorrect with pics and vid if poss. (No the motor had not been apart, find all sorts of stuff in crankcases and half a tube of 3 bond on the mating surfaces AND bearings!!!!) As you say Jim, a win a usable bike with care. EGA come a long way from my Gunson one, had to use a separate 12V batt to get it "super" accurate on my Ital (don't laugh)
Hi Jim watching from south Africa, not wishing to tell you how to suck eggs but I work on much older bikes than you and some spares are like hens teeth here, I use winter green to make hard rubbers softer and if you have the time to do it you will be surprised, love the wafflidge learnt lots
I tried to do this but slightly diluted and it didn’t do much and I left the rubber soaking for three days. Do you use the winter green oil on its own/neat please?
@@ianhoyle8459 the winter green I use is 30%oil and 70% isopropyl alcohol by volume, always use a sealable container, it's not quick but as some parts are unobtainium it's worth the wait, normally a week better in a warm location hope this helps, also works on breather pipes if unavailable
Why not do a leakdown test on cyl 2? It would at least confirm if there was a valve related issue which would warrant getting into valve cleaeances. 5 mins work once the plugs are out surely.
Compression test has already been done as shown in part one, and also repeated again. A leak down test isn't going to add anything more. Lack of compression isn't the cause.
There was a lot more wrong with it than that one split, carbs were set up wrong, the filter was caked in dirt, plugs needed a good clean. Also it likely does need the valve clearances done despite what the owner said, or the piston rings are worn out on cylinder two, etc lol
Good Video! Hey Man, I'm New To The Channel So, When You Say The Devil's In The Details, Do You Mean You're The Devil!?! Because You Sure Do Flesh Out The Details! Thank You.
Mate, you did a dry compression test, but you should have followed it up with a wet test. A wet test is where a small amount of oil is squirted into each cylinder. If the readings rise, the low readings will be related to piston/bore wear. If the readings stay the same, the problem will be valve or head gasket related. And stop swearing!!! ha ha
After paying you do work on my vtr1000 a couple of years ago it never ran right. I couldn’t afford to spend more money on it and sold it. It ran perfect before but after you fitted a jet kit it ran like shite. You even said you weren’t happy on the day. Along with all the other bits you did it was the worst £1500 I’ve spent.
£1500 to fit a jet kit? really! Also there are quite a few other mods you can do to improve carbbed bikes without fitting jet kits, imho, jet kits are a waist of money anyway unless you go high lift cams etc, but it then gets stupidly expensive. On my Y2k ZX9r I have the K&N filter, Delkevic exhaust, iridium plugs and +4 degree ignition advancer, 0.5mm shims on the main jet needles (slide needles as he calls them), pilot screws set at 2.45-3 turns out. I also removed the KLEEN air system and crankcase breather from the airbox and blocked the holes, and connected the two systems with a small K&N filter at the top giving the engine options, the beast of a bike is now even meaner 😎

Do you think the low compression is from years of over fuelling and the bores being washed by the extra fuel and not being lubricated properly?

gotta drop the needles down a slot, then it'll be as good as it will get considering low comp
