Loving the new format, glad it's not just me who can't bend over a bike for more than half an hour before his back gives in, oh the joys of getting old 🤣🤣🤣. I know you flashed up the "support us on patreon" credit at the end but you do normal say it and explain all the fun that could be had there. 👍👍👍
This format is what I love Jim. Cable are a pain. Good that some manuals (OEM) show cable routing, we get a lot of bikes (Vintage Japanese) with the cables all over the bloody place. as others have said carbs off before cables off and on before carbs back on is sometimes the case. Don't start me off on airboxes. Keep doing what you are doing it is all interesting. all the best Rob B. (JMC restoration Stockton on tees )
Definitely enjoy the format of start to finish real world repair. Interesting to hear you mention JIS screwdrivers. I started in motorcycle workshops in the 80's and have tinkered ever since. I couldn't believe that until recently I'd never discovered the absolute joy of using JIS screwdrivers on the proper screws, eg. Carb bowls, diaphragm caps, engine casings, etc. I brought a set of Sealey ones and my life is transformed 😂 Does seem to be really hard to find proper quality ones though and it's such a shame Snap-on don't sell the bits. Anyway, keep up the great content 👍
Great format! Most engrossing to see you plan for the job and subsequent execution. Well put together (film and bike). Your moments of jubilation and despondence echo those of all who know the territory 😁👏👌👍
I could see straight away one of the cable fixing nuts was missing. Thanks Bud, for showing us this, it might help one day with the Thunderaces' prettier and slender sister I've riden for 20 years.
For what should simple jobs , for some reason always horrible pain to do , great content , sorry though Jim, did laugh at your fight with this - also bad back and failing eyesight resonate with me -really enjoying seeing more content from you -always good to watch
Funny that you should mention the Thunderace sounding like a 'bag of spanners' (via the microphone) - I remember reading a review of the Thunderace in Bike magazine back in the day - they used exactly the same phrase; 'a bag of spanners' to describe the sound of the engine at tickover, but then added 'they all sound like this' and that it was normal - I remember the article so well because I actually owned a Thunderace for a few years and it was a superb motorcycle. Great video as usual - thanks! 👍
Great video, I have felt your pain! Very under rated old bikes those Thunderaces. I travelled to the South of France on mine, did my first trackday on one, and it was the first bike that I got my knee down on. Saw 131bhp at the rear wheel on the dyno with a Micron can and K&N filter and Stage 1 dynojet kit.
Nice one Jim I felt your pain fitting that bottom cable they can be buggers sometimes and make you feel like screaming. You did the right thing though leaving it for a couple of minutes and then getting back to it.
Love all your videos Jim, especially like this type of video of on site repairs. Keep up the good work and have a great Christmas. P.s what happened to part 4 of your xsr900 vids? Loved the first three episodes.
Nice to see the vids this way..hands on and great to follow along with. I'd have had you balance carbs too while you were in there. Nice 90's colour scheme in that bike.
Great video Jim. My very thought, just before you said it was 'I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who struggles'. CBX cables offer a similar challenge except with a lot more profanity when I'm refitting them. Keep up the good work.
My lower back was twinging as you were leaning across the bike ! Locating those cable nipples at the carb end can be very swear inducing...often take the carbs off !
I guessed what had happened from your description once throttle tube revealed 😁 I found the ZX7R throttle cables a nightmare to remove/refit with the carbs in place. But that's maybe inexperience 😂
If you haven't got any of the Vessel JIS MEGADORA Impacta Screwdrivers look them up. Good for old bikes even better for old outboards with corroded fasteners. Best part is ypu can also use them as a normal screwdriver.
Vessel JIS always gets my recommendation to people. A timely video. I need to replace my throttle cables. Took my bike for MOT and general check, picked it up and was told my throttle was a bit stiff and they lubed it. Cleaning my bike the next day and I find my throttle had a fair amount of slack, adjuster part was snapped at the handlebar end.
your vids are great content, free expert advice n tips its a no-brainer, back n f'in eyesight fell of a cliff most of us can relate to 😂 all the best for the New Year 🍻
Done similar on an old boxeye 600 fazer,i found it easier to remove carbs with cables still attached sliding them out,it was for new pilot jets but refitting was a pain, but put the carbs halfway in at an angle to refit both cables, was a faff but easier than trying thatvwith carbs on,the jis screwdrivers are handy for the carb screws only place with stock was amazon £12 for set of 4.
Same, got to 50 and my eyesight close and far became terrible. Before I only needed glasses for driving but now need them 95% of the time and can only get away with out if I have a screen at the exact distance… drives me mad, ok with glasses for distance but anything close, detailed work or reading drives me insane
Al little thought, what you call jis screws are most likely PZscrews, looks like a Philips until you look a bit closer, PZ has sort of a double PH, one large + shape and one smaller at a 45° rotated, so you can use a Phillips to fasten s PZ (Pozidrive) if you are careful, but a PZ doesn't get inside a Philips well enough.
Easier to take carbs off, that lower cable needs monkey hands and working against the spring tension is literally a pain in the fingers and back. A small wooden wedge inserted under the sprung arm frees up one hand.
Had a chance at a low miles, good history Ace for a really good price that would refurb and flip for decent money. Checked on what parts were available and ended up passing as the spares availability was dire, even from Japan, which was very surprising and disappointing as I like to save the older icons 😢
You haven't lived until you do this job on a '94 Yamaha V-Max, especially where the cables go into this little plastic box. If you break that box you might have better luck finding a rock from the moon
Ended up with a bunch of dental equipment and have these pointy longnose clamps which are perfect for the job of removing and fitting those bastard cables. After trying to jet my oil cooled Gsxr correctly back in the day they certainly kept my sanity through 37 times I had to remove those carbs! Ha ha
I have the non wooden style vessel jis screwdrivers and they are nice. I asked the snap on man and he’d never heard of them either, he called a colleague who had also never heard of them, email snap on in Northampton, guess what? same reply.
@@davidyoung9561 - 100% sure. All the Thunderaces' colour schemes had "Thunderace 1000" written on the sides of the fairings, never just YZF. Search for the blue colour scheme of the 2nd gen R1 and compare it with this Thunderace. It's not exactly the same, particularly in the fuel tank, but it's still an imitation.
Hello from across the Irish sea. Only recently stumbled across you channel. I have to say that I really like the way you approach bike repairs. I myself am a part time motorcycle greese monkey doing bike repairs i am a classic bike collector and restorer. But i also do anything old or new. Iv just watched the video on throttle cables . I made a little tool for getting the hard to reach cables either pull or return. Super simple and cheap, like the stuff that would already be in your workshop. I can email you the photos if you like you wouldn't need it for every throttle job just the one that is breaking your balls all i need is an email address. Sharing the knowledge is power. Regards Fran
Are you sure the New Zealand snapon JIS screw drivers were genuine…. I have seen them before but they were just Snapon handles on JIS blades which would have had wooden handles before, when I asked the bike mechanic
Loving the new format, glad it's not just me who can't bend over a bike for more than half an hour before his back gives in, oh the joys of getting old 🤣🤣🤣.

Yes, more like this Jim, keep em' coming

Vessel JIS screwdrivers are very good and they do JIS bits too 👍
Great format! Most engrossing to see you plan for the job and subsequent execution. Well put together (film and bike). Your moments of jubilation and despondence echo those of all who know the territory 😁👏👌👍
that bike is gorgeous, im into it!
Can be picked up cheap these days, lot of bike for the money.
I could see straight away one of the cable fixing nuts was missing. Thanks Bud, for showing us this, it might help one day with the Thunderaces' prettier and slender sister I've riden for 20 years.
Cheers from Arizona. Great videos. Especially the waffling.
Another job well done Jim.
I used to have a ThunderAce, great bike, glad I never had to change the throttle cables!
For what should simple jobs , for some reason always horrible pain to do , great content , sorry though Jim, did laugh at your fight with this - also bad back and failing eyesight resonate with me -really enjoying seeing more content from you -always good to watch

Hi jim you fixed my thunderace a few years ago done a great job going well keep the videos coming loving them
Great video, I have felt your pain!

Actually quite entertaining. Love the content.

Yep love the new format. I learn things every video
Love all your videos Jim, especially like this type of video of on site repairs. Keep up the good work and have a great Christmas. P.s what happened to part 4 of your xsr900 vids? Loved the first three episodes.
I filled a load of stuff, but it never made it through the editing process 😔
Nice to see the vids this way..hands on and great to follow along with. I'd have had you balance carbs too while you were in there. Nice 90's colour scheme in that bike.
Love the real world ‘day in the life’ format Jim. Hope the pesky algorithm likes it too. Have a great Christmas and thanks for the content
Great format, I had the same problem with my four cylinder 125 throttle cable.
Great video Jim. My very thought, just before you said it was 'I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who struggles'. CBX cables offer a similar challenge except with a lot more profanity when I'm refitting them. Keep up the good work.

Great video, This reminds me of a time when I replaced the throttle cables on a 2004 ZX10R…. Constant swearing was involved… nightmare!
Never an easy job think my bandit was the hardest. Another good video
I guessed what had happened from your description once throttle tube revealed 😁
I found the ZX7R throttle cables a nightmare to remove/refit with the carbs in place. But that's maybe inexperience 😂
I really like this type of on the road video, great!!
You get the best jobs. Thanks for sharing
The ThunderAce was my very first new bike, I even had the same exhaust as what is on this bike.
Great video Jim. 🍻
Keep them coming Jim I always learn something thanks Happy Christmas to you and your family 👍
Good one Jim

Great vid
New Camera was spot on 😊
Great video Jim , keep em coming I like them all 👍
Love this type of content Jim👍
Please continue to film more videos :) your content is excellent.
More to come!
When i replaced the throttle cable on my 1984 GPZ900R, I found it so much easier to remove the carburettors.
You'll never get a good sound out of an AKRAPOVIČ sticker. You need the whole AKRAPOVIČ silencer. Bit like putting a Honda sticker on a Sinnis init 😆
I found silicon or ptfe lube to work well for throttle tubes but I have used engine oil too.
Like it Jim! Keep em coming
The throttle cable set up on these and FZR1000 are a pain in the ass. Bite the bullet and in mount the carbs. Quicker in the long run.
Get the tip in but that's all. Talk about innuendos 😂😂🤣🤣
GREAT VIDS LOOKING GREAT FROM SUNNY SKEGNESS UK
Great Vid, keep 'em coming!
Someone was going for the Cadbury Boost colours, a nice scheme.
It's reassuring to see other people are also afflicted with my type of luck.
Buy a couple of Kocher pliers with a bent tip. It usually makes things a bit less complicated.
love these videos short and sweet.
I love how you edited out the part where you put the cable under the front cable under that bloody bar thingie 😅
Thank you for the videos this, happy Christmas 😃
love this format of video jim, gives out more info then you know. little tips and what not. like it a lot
Liking the on the job videos👍
sound's sweet, proper job, have a great xmas!
yes do more like this Thunderace carbs a pita to get on and off be glad you didnnt have to go there
your vids are great content, free expert advice n tips its a no-brainer, back n f'in eyesight fell of a cliff most of us can relate to 😂 all the best for the New Year 🍻

I remember when we found your keys in the bin that must be twenty years ago 😂😂
Fixing throttle cables only gets worse every time you do them😂
It's nice to see the professionals struggling like I do.
Yeah, but this guy always gets it sorted.
I remember doing this job on my YZF750 once every week or so. Eventually I opted for a one cable system and it got way easier.
Great video top man - what’s the lovely bike you have in your dinning area? 😋
New camera is good!
Same, got to 50 and my eyesight close and far became terrible. Before I only needed glasses for driving but now need them 95% of the time and can only get away with out if I have a screen at the exact distance… drives me mad, ok with glasses for distance but anything close, detailed work or reading drives me insane
I'm the same, it's so f...ing frustrating, especially doing this sort of work. Reading Safely Glasses are a revolution!
Great format always interesting to watch & don't mind a bit of waffleage Mary Christmas to you and yours
As far as JIS goes, Laser 7036 might be one of the few options along with Vessel - probably the best available in the UK

More please
What do you spray onto the air box to aid with sliding it back onto the carbs?
Wow~this is cool trip-sleep well, Superbike. ;)
Any tips for adjusting the throttle closing cable?
good vid
More please 😊
so good, keep them comimg
Just hope like hell the needle jets/emulsion tubes aren’t worn oval. They are pressed into carb body and not replaceable.
Had a chance at a low miles, good history Ace for a really good price that would refurb and flip for decent money. Checked on what parts were available and ended up passing as the spares availability was dire, even from Japan, which was very surprising and disappointing as I like to save the older icons 😢
My back is Titanium it hurts when I laugh..😂
Hozan JIS.
Being a mechanic is my pasión. I love my job. Literally me 5 minutes later (cursing in the 3 languages I know hahaha)
You haven't lived until you do this job on a '94 Yamaha V-Max, especially where the cables go into this little plastic box. If you break that box you might have better luck finding a rock from the moon
That rat on the grab rail was in there messing about
where are you -anywhere near oxford please?
Wait until you get to 60+😂

2:14 - You've never seen one in this colour because that's the colour scheme of the 2nd gen R1. There was never a Thunderace with that scheme. 🙂
Are you sure?

Hey mate 👍🏻
The bottom cable needs kids hands and a long flat 🪛
Carbs off and it's really easy but who wants to do that
yes very good🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧
it took me an hour to remove the throttle cables on my R1 the first time i tried it😐😀
Like it 👍
I'd have done up the 4 nuts & gone home. :-) Job's a goodun. With you on the back & eyesight front. 50 and it's doooown...
Are you sure the New Zealand snapon JIS screw drivers were genuine…. I have seen them before but they were just Snapon handles on JIS blades which would have had wooden handles before, when I asked the bike mechanic
Got it off the Snap-on truck! But I guess it could be a knock-off. It's a good one if it is, 20 years old, and still going strong!
Can't do mine without removing carbs, CBR F3 are a bastard for an old bike
Buy the filips and grind it to a flat head then you have a flat head
