Also if you play at 30fps you'll have more input lag as it takes more time to show a frame on display during each second because it has to refresh (or repeat) each frame more times before going to the next frame of animation meaning that since 1 second= 1000 milliseconds you'll get
    1. 1000/30fps= 33 milliseconds of delay
    2. 1000/60fps=16 to 17 milliseconds of delay
Also on top of that delay caused by the amount of fps, there's the additional delay caused by the controller you use, the display you use as some do more image processing than others which causes even more delay (motion interpolation being the biggest offender), also if you're online your connection plays a role (and a big one at that)

  • @SpacedogD

There is a caveat, using wireless can result in inconsistent input latency due to interference. It might make sense if you are into latency consistency (e.g. rhythm games) over getting the lowest possible latency. On my ps4 controller which is aging, the bluetooth connection is very weak and it is very easy to see the input signal latency vary wildly when someone walks pass you.
So while in general wireless should result in lower input latency, the downside is the variance and inconsistency of the latency can be detrimental.

Whilst what you say is true, I still wouldn't recommend Bluetooth at least for the PS5.
When measuring average input delay, USB is extremely consistent and seldom deviates from its average. Wireless on the other hand has a higher average, with lots of high peaks. Rocket Science's RUclips channel tested this.
So on PS4 you're effectively making a trade off between responsiveness and consistency. It depends what you play. If you're executing repeated actions and to be as consistent as possible, like say playing Rocket League at a high Rank, you may want to use USB. For a game that doesn't solely rely on mechanics but does benefit from speed like CoD, playing Bluetooth may be best.
On PS5 the polling rate appears to be the same between both input methods, which makes USB a no brainer especially if you're playing at a desk. You get the fastest input and extremely consistent input together.

I dunno, the original standard USB "polling rate" on a PC is 250 ms, which can be upped to 1,000 ms in newer hardware.

you’re wrong about input lag being worse through usb on past gen consoles. Digital Foundry specifically tested this in Uncharted and found that wired usb had a better input lag than wireless bluetooth. Polling rate does not equal overall input lag, it is just a measurement of how many times in an interval does the signal update, it has nothing to do with how fast that signal is received and processed which are also major components of overall input lag.

In the beginning of ps4 i had almost 0.3 seconds of delay between the ps4 pro and the controller, then i found that one of the things making it have that delay was rhe WiFi channels that were being used which some were the same as the ps4 and other were just a bit difference. PS4 uses Bluetooth on same frequency that channel 6 from WiFi, so if you use a channel 1 or 11, 12 or 13 you won't have issues. Also today's tva you have to use gamer mode on the tv so it doesn't increase the lag, it actually works a lot . PS5 has the same issue as the Bluetooth is the same , whatever version the Bluetooth has it works on the same frequency. Everything you use with wireless whether is by WiFi or Bluetooth you will have lot of interfere for a playstation controller and even many of the drones with wifi that use the same channels or frequencies, you have to change channels on wifi. Every Bluetooth device is a menace for playstation controllers. Headphones, ear buds, smartwatches, phones with Bluetooth connected to a device and etc

Not sure about this... I occasionally have terrible input lag when playing via bluetooth on PS5. Everything is fine until select moments where inputs don't register, are delayed, or are read as long inputs rather than short ones. Once I plug it in, however, it never happens, and the controls actually feel more in tune. But perhaps this issue for me is more about an inconsistent connection rather than persistent subtle lag throughout the play session.

If you read the comments, there is a fair few pointing out a flaw in testing method in video. Maybe not as clearly as this but basically, the video states that wireless has faster poling rate vs USB and backs it up using benchmarks made by someone who tested compared the latency. Now none of this is in theory super wrong and yes for sure not considering interference at all, a 4x poling rate on wireless should feel much smoother but the benchmarking was likely only done in one location with somewhat controlled amount of interference. Like in a larger building with only a few or no close sources of interference or just luckily tested it at time of day where there wasnt as much interference and or no massive spikes in interference.
All wireless technology has the same issues, its very susceptible to interference and tehre are probably many more sources of interference than you ever considered. Like simply having a microwave turned on in a house can totally disconnect a wifi connection in the right scenario like being in path between *modem/router* and pc or close to either in general. Then theres interference from other bluetooth devices on same frequency and even devices on other frequencies both directly if signal bounces shift frequency to range close to bluetooth and indirectly due to the frequencies emitted by wireless devices is designed to be kept within a range but often spills into other frequencies a little.
So even if polling rate is faster when in wireless mode and the wireless has been designed to be very low latency or just as low as wired USB, then all that goes out the window if the latency through the wireless part is spiking or consistently higher due to interference then USB will be faster/better/smoother.

I noticed this myself when playing around in DS4Windows with DS4 - as it shows the input lag. Funny thing is - in DS4Win you can increase the polling rate for BT from the default one (at the cost of battery drain)

I had no idea that was the case. I thought it was the opposite 😂 thank you for the tip! Very good to know 😁

I’m not an experienced tech guy, but my bet is that the PS4 controllers are likely trying to juggle both charging and sending/receiving information, that and the fact it’s a physical connection between controller and console (an example is that I had I teacher in middle school try to call a friend in Alaska and experienced a severe latency of a few seconds of silence between everyone’s responses). Plus, there’s about a decade of technological advancements between the two consoles, for all we know it could be the console’s fault and not the controller.

I experienced increased latency as the battery gets lower

The thumbnail makes it look like your saying "don't charge your controllers" lmfao

Why even bother about this its not that much of a difference if you treat your controller normally
