    I have this machine and I love it. Increasing stitch length can be beneficial when sewing multiple layers. I am a beginner and have made a quilt, lots of bags, and cushion covers so far. Great little work horse 😁

    There is a little black switch at the back of the presser foot that you push in that levels out the presser foot to sew thicker fabrics which works well, I have this machine and as a new ish sewer an not having the same issues as you are with the fabric going off to the left. I recently sewed a 3d face mask and the stitching is straight and that has interfacing too

    Dust covers are very important to protect your machine from general airborne grime around the home.
    The offset shank on the twin needle is for use on a left position zig-zag machine.
    The other problems you encountered were due to operator failure, not the machine.

    • @AbisDen
      @AbisDen  2 года назад +1

      I'm not sure the operator is at fault here - these machines are consistently poor - have you ever opened one to see the quality of the machine - dreadful.

    Brilliant video! Thank you so much, I literally had this machine in my Amazon basket but it wouldn’t have been any good for my use after seeing your video. I do a lot of crafting and make padded fabric journal covers so this definitely wouldn’t have had the power I would need. I haven’t used a sewing machine before and can’t afford to spend hundreds, can you suggest a good machine please? I don’t do quilting or anything like that, would just like a nice variety of stitches. Thank you very much 😊🙏🏻

    5 button holes. I have the Brother SE 600 it's not too bad but you need to have a few tricks up your sleeve. For fine fabrics use a smaller needle and place tape over the throat plate as the hole is to big as you saw it sucked in the fabric stabiliser also helps. These machines are not for heavy duty sewing and the computer is very finicky. On heavy fabrics I lengthen my stitches use a size 16 needle lower the tension slow down the sewing speed and use a hump jump over thick seams. I'm still practicing and learning to have patience.😊👍👍

    I'm surprised that this machine strugling so much. It was one of my choices when I was upgrading my janome. Instead I bought innovis n-15 which is only 2w more powerful and never have problem with sewing straight unlike my old Janome (85w). It's realy hard to find out how powerfull is machine before you buy it but many computerised new janome models have even lower power input. Great informative video like every of yours.

    I'm about to purchase my first sewing machine, I was looking at this as it has an automatic needle threader.
    But
    It doesn't appear to be powerful.
    Can you reccomend a beginner model that will suit dressmaking in future & little projects please, I'd rather pay mid range than buy twice. This is £235. But I don't know where to begin. I've sight issues so assume an automatic needle threader would be easier for me. Thank uou

      I would NEVER buy a brother sewing machine again and certainly won’t recommend them as beginner machines. They have no power and there is a lot of plastic inside, rendering them useless when anything fails on them. Look at the Hobbycraft janome machine or a Necchi for that price point but for a decent machine, consider Juki

      @@toilworn1322 I’ve had it now for over 2 years and I’ve been very happy with it. Good points are the drop in bobbin, needle threaded, needle up/ needle down, range of stitches and easy to use. I’ve sewed loads on it, cotton, viscose, jersey, sweatshirt, cord, wool and it’s been great to develop my skills. A couple of things that could be better are the fact it doesn’t have a speed control, the lighting - I bought a stick on strip light from Amazon which improved it, button holes on stretch can be tricky, and it can struggle on thick fabric or thick seams. I now know what I’m looking for on my forever machine, but I will be paying 10x the price of the Necchi to get them! So overall a fantastic, value for money machine, which I highly recommend. Hope that helps x

    • @maggiemcdonald1346
      @maggiemcdonald1346 2 года назад +1

      @@toilworn1322 yes you just have to be extra careful going around corners, although if I want to do something really slowly, say turning a corner I press the up/ down needle button so it does one stitch at a time. Yes it does have a stretch stitch and a stretch stitch button hole too. However if you are sewing jersey you can use a zig zag stitch too. You can also use a twin needle for hems too. When I was starting I found RUclips a fantastic resource for learning how to sew different fabric and garments etc.

    I wish I lived nearer Stockport where my son lives and then I could visit you and get some technical training. I would love to be able to service my machine and fix it. Like at the moment I think there is something wrong with the feed dogs as the feed is terrible, even with the walking foot and when sewing jersey it always gets eaten. I wouldn’t mind but I have a Janome 8900 and for the money they cost I would expect a lot better. I have had it a few years and it gets heavy use but it is very frustrating. Do you ever have to replace feed dogs in machines? Also I have been searching the Internet to find out the power but it doesn’t seem to be very clear anywhere. I will have a look at my machine tomorrow.
    The answer to today’s question is 5 buttonholes.

    11:15 "the peddle doesn't give me good control"
    It's sounding to me like you just have a lead foot.. It's not an "ALL or NOTHING" deal, if you push down partal way it will go slower. It's quite variable actually.
    It sounds like when people try to use their "clutch" foot on the brake peddle while driving, you end up slamming on the brakes far too hard..

    • @AbisDen
      @AbisDen  Год назад

      Thanks for your thoughts Colin. The peddle on this machine does not give good control. Having worked with Brother for years, I have come across their different peddles. Some of their machines they class as disposal, this being one of them. This machine has a poorly made foot. But thank you for your thoughts.

    • @ColinRichardson
      @ColinRichardson Год назад

      @@AbisDen I literally used this paddle on the FS40 less than 4 minutes ago.. There are about 7 different levels of control on the peddle. You seemed to use it in two different levels NO peddle and FULL peddle, there was nothing in-between. Either you have a defective peddle, or they have changed the design of the peddle. I see the video is 2 years old, we have had the FS40 for about 9 years, so maybe they changed it.. But, if they hadn't, it would seem you are unable to smoothly operate the peddle. Practice may help with this, though this was the first time I used used my wife's sewing machine in about 4 years, and was able to find the correct pressure on the first step..
      If you are a car driver, I would suggest you try your right foot..

      Thanks Colin. Maybe it is defective? I originally bought the machine from the states before they were sold in the uk.I’ve had a few FS models. It’s not a good machine. Having repaired a few, they just aren’t designed for longevity. Brother sell a lot of plastic rubbish. What they themselves class as “disposable”. The FS range is unfortunately one of them.

I’ve seen these issues a lot with brother machines. So I stick to Bernina or Singer mechanical machines over the plastic computerised machines, they really have the best stitch quality and are much more durable over time.

    Hi Abi, the machine has 5 types of buttonholes. Thank you so much for your amazing and useful videos! I am a beginner and I bought this machine a couple of days ago. It was sad to see the problems the machine had during this video. Let's see what happens with mine during my learning journey. Greetings from London!

    This machine has 5 buttonholes. I loved the way you pushed it away when you lost the plot I was thinking the same thing. Lol Neither of my mechanical brothers hold the fabric straight while stitching and I thought it was just me. Now I can see I’m not going mad thank you 🙏🤣🤣. Do the more expensive brothers work any better? Xx

    Hi Abi. There were 5 button holes on that machine. Have to give it to you, you had more patience with it than I would have as it would have gone out the window before it jammed 🤣 Thanks for such a brilliant channel. X
