One is left to wonder how much more advanced society would be had the Mongols not burned the House of Wisdom to the ground... as someone who is always curious to learn more, this saddens me that they destroyed books with no regard to what knowledge they might have held.
It seems it something that always happens. Even during the collapse of the bronze age. Some horde and then some great epidemic always caused knowledge to be lost.
They burned much more than a library, they destroyed Song dynasty which was very close to a industrial revolution, their steel production wasn't matched until late 1800s.
@@Vampirewolfking i mean no insult, but i disagree, it was past its prime and had nowhere near the influence Baghdad had the time, it truly was the center of the world at its peak
Assassin’s Creed Mirage inspired me to research more about Medieval Baghdad. In its time, it was the cultural center of the world, just like Alexandria was the cultural center in its time.
Was wondering why their was alot of Asians & Africans, even Indians in the game during such a time period. I knew of the silk roads between Europe & Asia but not to this extent. Baghdad was indeed one of the few international cities throughout history.
I've recently finished a course on Wondrium (formerly The Great Courses Plus) on the Islamic Golden Age, AND read all of the historical tidbits added to Assassin's Creed Mirage, AND likely watched further RUclips videos on this subject. And yet this video still managed to show/teach me a few things that I was not previously familiar with! Great job, K&G team!
Brilliant video as always but 1 thing that isn't highlighted as much about golden age Baghdad is that scholarship of mathematics, science and literature were not the only forms of knowledge that advanced in that time but also the Islamic sciences and the religious figures like Imam Musa Qazim, Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Ghazali and Shaykh Abdul Qadir among others who contributed greatly to the scholarship of theology, Philosophy and Spirituality.
Am a Muslim myself but I have to tell you religious sciences is not a thing. The brand of theology some of those later imams started to spread were against mathematics and science. This was catastrophic for Muslim world which regressed in knowledge culminating in the subjugation and plunder by European powers. Look at the current state of the Arab world and tell me whether the theology, philosophy and spirituality spread by those Imams advanced Islam and the world.
@@hydrolifetech7911 So the first point is religious sciences is a thing. It's just not science as in the stufy of the natural world, its the study of the religion. The modules include tafseer of the quran, Hadith, Arabic language, jurisprudence and others. The second thing is all of the people in the golden age who advanced science like ibn Haytham, Ibn Sina or Al Khwaresmi all had a foundation of Islamic learning in all of those modules I just explained. It may not have have been extensive but it was a foundation nonetheless. Thirdly your going to have to be specific with which of the later imams your referring to. Imam Musa Qasim is a direct decendant of the prophet Muhammad, Imam Abu Hanifa specialised in Islamic Jurisprudence to the point where most Muslims in the world follow his methodology. Imam Al Ghazalis teachings do clash with scientific advancement but that's because he was looking at it at the religion from a purely spiritual perspective and referring to the over indulgence of the state in scientific affairs and not concentrating on its people. Shaykh Abdul Qadir is the most revealed spiritual Saint in South Asia and parts of the Middle east for his teachings on spirituality. My point is the scholars of religion did not directly influence the decline of the pusute of the natural sciences but a series of other factors. I understand your point about the state of the Arab world but blaming that on a lack of scientific advancement is quite frankly naive aswell historically inaccurate. The ottomon empire focused more on spirituality and expansion rather than science yes but the Arab decline is due to further external factors and colonisation. Harun ar Rashid focused on learning and wanted Greek philosophy, indian mathematics, African history, Chinese medicine all to be translated Into Arabic but where did that get them in the end nowhere, the mongols came and destroyed it all. The arabs couldn't recover from that and neither did a leader come again who wanted to focus on that. The only state in the middle east focused on any kind of scientific development is the UAE because it has the money to do so, everyone else is too worried about survival amid war, sanctions and other problems.

@@ghostd69 Thankyou for your explanation but you answered a question I didn't even ask. Firstly the video didn't explain the fall of the ummayads because the video was only about the city of Baghdad as the capital of the Abbasid empire. When idol worshippers in India say "why don't arabs have a Taj Mahal if Muslims were so elegant back in the day", they must know that a city named Baghdad existed, which had no other equivalent in its glory, abundance and majesty. Even the status and position which cities like New York has in the modern world, can't be compared to what Baghdad had back then. But unfortunately it was all lost to the Mongol invasions. It was the Muslim sultans in Delhi which saved this land, its people, its culture, its heritage from the barbaric Mongols. Not only that, but they even took it to new heights of prosperity and glory in that very same period. But instead of being grateful and hailing them as heroes, they villify the Muslims for their cheap and filthy politics.
@user-xd4nl9sq9x so you are saying that you do not believe that Taj Mahal is some 'ancient xyz temple' and built by some random weak cow worshipper raja? And its minarets do not appear to you as shivling? Impressive! But sadly your masters won't be happy with this.

@@Beyonder1987 Although one cannot deny the fact that Semitic peoples ( Phoenicians , Babylonians , Assyrians) have contributed to the advancement of human civilisation and the very fact that all Eurasian writing systems evolved from Phoenician Alphabet , yet Persians have always been very aware of their Aryan ( i.e. politically correct " proto-indo-european" not to be confused with what average Americans understand thereby ), but Persian empire was principally founded upon Iranian Medo- Persian heritage and mainly Persian language next to Aramaic and Greek was used in their vast empire so that all their citizens across the empire territory would be able to understand the administrative laws and regulations which was by itself a novelty , moreover the Abbasid dynasty itself was run mainly by Iranic administrators and scholars copying Sassanian empire administration therefore they were more tolerent towards Greeks and Assyrians ( Nestorian Christians ), even Arabic language was reformed and enriched by Iranians Sibawayh and Ibn al-Muqaffa who wrote Grammar and translated many middle-Persian books into Arabic and also Assyrians Christians and Greeks have contributed a great deal to Abbasid as well as Islamic intellectual development
@@Beyonder1987 Thank you , I answered your comment but I don't know why it has disappeared ? “The Razing of Baghdad is an excellent example of the Elite screwing over the Middle and Lower Classes. Baghdad would not have suffered the fate it did if not for the arrogance of the House of Abbas. I lament the fate of the people of Baghdad and I lament the loss of the House of Wisdom but I celebrate the fate of the Abbasid elites, the very Abbasid elites who damned the people of Baghdad to such an evil as the Chengisid.” Btw I’m using quotes because RUclips has repeatedly censured my comments on the platform.
When the first Abbasid ruler took over Iraq, he wanted to leave his mark so that people would remember him. That's why he decided to build the most beautiful city and named it Baghdad. He also built another city and called it Samarra. Its name literally means the city that a person is happy when he sees. This is evidence that he was obsessed with people remembering him
I think one of the reason Baghdad and Islamic empire collapsed was mainly due to the fact that Muslims have been of extremely diverse ethnic backgrounds some of whom like Persians , Spanish ,Caucasia ...had strong sense of national identity very distinct languages ( Non-arabic ) and were proud of their own cultural heritage therefore they felt entirely alien to the rest of Muslims and wished Islamic Empire to disintegrate therefore they actually collaborated with the Mongols .
I think that's a fair perspective but I think it also goes the other way, Arabic cultural systems meant that those that didn't assimilate found themselves on the outside of the power centers in the Umayyad Caliphate. The Abbasids tried to balance between Arabs and non-Arabs but ended up upsetting everyone, including various Arab groups, some of which revolted back in the 9th century.
@@bbnn5621 Yes , curiously later in the history the Ottoman empire attempted to build an Islamic empire based on Abbasid caliphate but eventually they could not include Iranic territories in their Theocracy empire and Iranians ( Safavids ) allied with the Catholic Europe against Ottoman Muslim Caliphate .
That's like saying why didn't Byzantium submit peacefully to the Ottomans? Ofcourse they would have faith in their history and the Abbasids were the same.

Baghdad has ironically been one of the most unpeaceful cities in history. From the Mongols, Timurids, to the British invasion of the 1900s to the Iraq War. So much destruction and death from the city's prime during the days of Harun Al Rashid. Jerusalem is probably the only city with a more bloody past.

Thank you so much! I’ve been waiting on this one
Always some barbarian that's ready and willing to reset the advances of the world back.
The production quality increases with every video, you guys are doing amazing! best wishes to the Kings and Generals' crew!
The only city that could somehow compete with Abassid Baghdad at the time was Umayyad Cordoba
That'd be a nice video too
And Roman Constantinople. Those three were the greatest cities of the middle ages on that side of the silk road.
@@Vampirewolfking true
Damascus, Aleppo, Delhi, Lahore, Kashgar, Otrar, Merv, Smarkand, Bukhara, Tunis, Balarm, Toledo, Ghazni, Balkh, Herat, Fez and others too.
@@Vampirewolfking i mean no insult, but i disagree, it was past its prime and had nowhere near the influence Baghdad had the time, it truly was the center of the world at its peak
In 1000 AD, it was the third largest city in the world. It wasn't at its peak, but it was still a very important city.
The video was great as always! Thank you so much for making it free!
Baghdad was indeed one of the few international cities throughout history.
production quality is amazing and getting better and better.

Secondly I commented highlighting the advancement of Islamic knowledge in Baghdad during and after the Abbasid Caliphate.
So what has the fall of the ummayads got to do with that.

Awesome vid! Baghdad has an amazing history. I really want to see something on Babylon too.
This is a magnificent story of innovation collaboration triumph and peace. It's so heartbreaking to hear about the fall of Baghdad at the hands of the Mongols but what is even more heartbreaking is our lack of knowledge about its history. It makes the American and UK invasion of Baghdad even more pointless and disgusting. How ignorant we have been in the west about the history of the Islamic empires and the golden era. It's like a historical treasure that has just been kept a secret and it's only now that we're discovering all these amazing things about these civilisations. Another point I would like to make having studied history at A Level in the UK is how narrow one-sided and ignorant is the history curriculum in the UK shame on the national curriculum Mrs Jones and every other teacher who has failed to teach the beauty and diversity and richness that is our world history.
Great video!

"Baghdad, the City of Peace".
The absolute irony here it so strong that it hurts!
They leave the land desolated with delicious shwarma and silk fabrics and call it peace….
What do you mean
They were literally more peaceful than Christian cities tf do u mean islamophobe
It was called that because it warded off many attacks. All people experience inside fighting and wars. you can make a comment about "the land of the free" as well and say that its ironic because the school system is made to raise workers and not free thinkers. and that can be countered as well by mentioning how the country was founded, its rules, etc. in the beginning.

@@Beyonder1987 are you stupid
Baghdad is the center of the globe
“The Razing of Baghdad is an excellent example of the Elite screwing over the Middle and Lower Classes. Baghdad would not have suffered the fate it did if not for the arrogance of the House of Abbas. I lament the fate of the people of Baghdad and I lament the loss of the House of Wisdom but I celebrate the fate of the Abbasid elites, the very Abbasid elites who damned the people of Baghdad to such an evil as the Chengisid.”
Btw I’m using quotes because RUclips has repeatedly censured my comments on the platform.
When the first Abbasid ruler took over Iraq, he wanted to leave his mark so that people would remember him. That's why he decided to build the most beautiful city and named it Baghdad. He also built another city and called it Samarra. Its name literally means the city that a person is happy when he sees. This is evidence that he was obsessed with people remembering him
Do a video on the nabateans and Petra
16:55 It is sad to see a city destroyed, along with its history, present, future, knowledge, and research. It's a brutal act.

I wonder what would world we would live in if Baghdad had submitted peacefully to the Mongols? The preservation of wisdom and knowledge.....
🙄
@temptemp4174 they had a code of honor that they swore by. If a city submitted immediately to them, they would spare it.
