Usually it's cause people have issues they think buying stuff they can't afford will fill some void...expensive homes, cars, stuff...that's definitely a trap to avoid. Nice things are ok but only if it fits your budget.

I deleted the shopping apps off my phone and only have them on my designated school/work computer. I used to have them not on my Home Screen but I would use the Amazon/eBay app like social media, meaning entertainment. I don’t go on RUclips on the computer and I don’t use it for entertainment (I’d rather watch TV), so I’ve trained myself to think of the computer as business only. I am so much less likely to open that computer to browse for something for shopping. I put the apps on there, off of my Home Screen too. I now only shop if something peaks my interest (like an idea), OR I specifically need something. I’m a lot more intentional with purchases than I used to be.

One of the biggest things I learned as an adult is how to pay for college without debt. Working for a college or university generally gives you at least a discount on courses. Some colleges and universities offer a free course or two a semester to full-time employees who have worked there a specific amount of time. Even if the courses are not free, but are discounted, it often allows you to pay as you go. Does it take longer to earn the degree? Absolutely, but it also allows you to come out debt free. I wish I had known that when I went to college. I didn’t pay off my student loans until I was in my 40s. I now share this tip with everyone who is interested in hearing it.

The victim mentality leads to complacency about debt. The "victor" mentality leads to gazelle intensity! "I think I can" needs to be our motto again. Adults need to read "The Little Engine That Could".

NO DEBT IS MORE COMPLEX THAN MENTALITY!!! In part because without an income or too little income debt is unavoidable for survival. Behavior does not matter more than math.
