greatest announcer..... with his greatest call.... ul get goose bumps with the timing........... still a shame... charamatic broke his leg with 3 fulongs to go in the belmont... still havent gotten over that 1
that groan you hear at the finish line included my voice. Nobody had a ticket with Charismatic anywhere in the grandstands near where I was sitting. An elderly woman I did not know, grabbed my arm when they turned for home, she was pumping, and jumping and screaming her head off, until they passed us just before the wire. Realizing the winner was a long shot she didn't bet, she released my arm and just slunk back down onto her seat. What a great two minutes that was. Funny thing is, right after the race, I looked him up in the Racing Form, and thought, oh that was an easy horse to pick--if memory serves me, he was a grandson of Secretariat--which I completely missed when handicapping the race. Easy, isn't it? HAHA
Always thought chic Anderson and Tom Durkin were two of the best thoroughbred 🐎race track announcers , but i give the " edge " to Dave Johnson ! Now , maybe 😏🤔 im a little biased given the fact that we lived near each other in the 1980s and 1990s on the east ➡️ side of Manhattan and would run into each other many times in the famous 🍺🍻 bar restaurant " PJ Clarke's " ! Dave was just a great tremendous super nice 👍😁🎯 guy and i hope 🤞 he's doing well ☺️😊👍😁🎯 !
Christopher Wiley Antley (1966-2000) set two records which, I think, no other jockey has equaled or surpassed yet: in 1987 he became the first jockey to win nine races in a single day and in 1989 he won at least one race a day for 64 straight days. At the age of 18, Antley was United States Champion Jockey by wins with 469. Greetings from Venezuela.
RIP Charismatic (foaled March 13, 1996, died February 19, 2017) a very great 3 year-old champion. 5 wins, 4 second and 2 thirds in 17 starts and US$ 2,038,064 earned. We will never forget you. Give us our greetings to Chris. Best regards from Venezuela.
I recorded both 1999 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in a VHS tape and sixteeen years later, I still see those races whenever I can because it brings to me a lot of pleasant memories. I have not managed to transfer those videos to DVD format due to lack of time and money. God bless Hall of Fame Jockey Christopher Wiley Antley! (1966-2000) Greetings from Venezuela.
I took part in a massive bar pool for this race. Picked from a hat. I got Charismatic. Saw he was a 30-1 odd horse and wasn't expecting much. Glad I was wrong.
