Please, please read this if you plan to do the coasters! My friend was gifted this craft at her engagement party and the little feet of each coaster stuck to the surface the tile below. The person who made them was devestated. She said she was sure the mod podge was dry - and she’s an experienced crafter! Be sure to wait a week or more before stacking them to gift. I would even consider placing sheets of wax paper between just to be safe.
I had the same experience with my Fimo trays I made as a gift. I coated them with ModgePodge and at first they where fine but after a few days they became so sticky. It was a disaster. Never take ModgePodge again.
Poor bride... 🙁 she must have been so stressed. You say « An experienced crafter made them this way ... » but, really? ... 🙄 I doubt she was for this kind of work , because We all know mod podge should cure for at least 3 weeks before being used like what she did : stack them ! Sorry for the bride but it is NOT a secret. We all know this if we can read. 😉
I’ve been making coasters from tiles for years. I do recommend spraying them with a sealant and also, I place sticky backed cork on the back of the coasters to help protect tables from the underside of the tiles and it just gives them a more finished look.
I have made doll clothes from our old clothes. When we were kids we made potholders out of old clothes. I made my kids sewing cards from old greeting cards glued to cardboard. Playsets made from boxes. My grandma handed me a rolled up towel if I asked for a doll. We made papier mache from newspaper, flour and water. We made clay from flour, salt and water. Doll and action figure furniture from throw away stuff. Since many people in the family were refugees and/or very poor we wasted nothing. I once made 25 luncheon favors for about $1.00. Tina
I love making coasters - make some for a friend's bar around the pool. Had to have something unbreakable, so I went to Home Depot, flooring department, and got 8 of the little squares showing designs on wood flooring. They are freebies, so long as you don't clean the display out. Peeled the paper off the back, wiped down with alcohol, and modge podged photos to the front. Covered with several coats, then sealed well. On both sides. He loved his very different coasters, and two years later, still look like new. Also, they are waterproof, and unbreakable!
Love the coaster idea! A little tip...put a piece of felt on the back so they don't scratch the table. Also you should use water proof modge podge. I had some of these and the condensation from the cups ruins the finish.
Liz, a fantastic addition to the dog treat gift would be a personalized dog tag! You can make them at most Petsmarts. They usually have the machine in front by the registers. Then just use the red & white string you wrapped around the canister with to tie it in so it hangs at the knot or bow!

You don't have to cove the whole entire bottom, and it can even be flannel from an old pillow case or a cork from an old wine bottle cut into slices. You only have to put it on the corners, which is much cheaper and less wasteful, unless maybe you use a thin fabric like felt - which can even be doubled. Get creative and have fun!
I loved all of them. The one with clothespins reminded me of a fellow teacher who used to teach her pupils how to make them for Mother's Day gifts. I think they glued them just with white school glue and I don't recall seeing that they had put anything on the back to make them stronger, so I'm not sure how long they lasted. What a coincidence that I had been thinking about it some days ago , after so many years, and I've just come across this!
Just a suggestion, when making a template for the coaster pictures, I use a clear plastic from notebook dividers or page protectors, or any plastic you can see through. This way you can position the picture easily. Works like a charm!
im making my adult sons, their spouses and grandkids each a fleece pillow case. i made these for myself last year and they are so cozy in the winter. then ill use that for a bag to pack their gifts in.
A tip for getting photos to stick to the tiles: scratch the surface of the tile with a nail (a metal one, not a fingernail!) just where you plan to glue the photo, so it'll be hidden. It'll give the glue more surface area and it'll adhere better. 💛
The coasters have been around for years my kids made them in scouts they are in their 40's now. They used epoxy for the top to seal it I think. They had felt on the bottom through one of our moves they got broken had to throw them away. Such a cute idea glad to see they are still doing them all these years later. 😁❤

@@daniellec8849 Yes it does. I make travertine coasters I sell at craft shows (or did pre-pandemic) You should never use a sealed or shiny coaster if you drink iced beverages - if the coaster is sealed it won't absorb the condensation and that defeats the whole purpose of using a coaster, at least in my book! Travertine is an absorbent natural stone. With mine, I back them in a waterproof sealant and cover them with cork on the back. This way the moisture can't penetrate. I then stamp them with Stazon permanent inks. This won't work for photographs but you could stamp names or initials throw on some decorative elements (swirls, etc) and you have a beautiful set for a personalized gift. I have used smaller tiles by cutting a 12x12 tile sheet apart (you can get squares or fun shapes as well) , attached photo's on front and magnet on back for fridge magnets as well! Fun gifts!
I like Miners comment about putting felt on the bottom of the coasters. I would also recommend putting felt on the bottom of the cement planters as well. Those are such a cute ideal. Thanks
When I make my tile coasters I use felt circles that you put under furniture legs. I’ve used cork and felt sheets before and I find the furniture felt circles to be the best. Gives them a good height too. I got a big bag from Amazon.
Loved all of these. Not exactly a homemade gift but I gathered pictures of my cousin's 2 dogs that passed this year. Sent them to an Etsyy store. They photo shopped them into Renaissance outfits. Had both of them in the same picture. I went to Hobby Lobby & bought a mat. Went to a thrift store & found a great frame for $4.00. The picture, for it printed off, the mat & frame all less than $40.00. The frame is 18"x22", mat is 11"x14" so it is quite large. Did the same with my daughter's, (who is fighting cancer), cat in Victorian dress. I am over the moon the way they turned out. Can't wait to give them.🤗 Merry Christmas to you.❄❄
I made coasters like these many years ago but used by daughter's elementary school artwork and gave to the grandparents. I added felt circles to each corner to protect the table. Also, I've done the same but instead of a coaster, put the tile on a small plate stand. Use matte Mod Podge, spread across, let dry, then spread vertically. Gives a nice texture.

my daughter made photo coasters using pictures from vacation. we sealed them with a poly spray. i would also say it's very important to have something on the back of each coaster - cork or felt - to keep them from scratching a table.
I just love homemade gifts! Hot cocoa jars are cute to make too but I'm not sure those would be a good idea during this pandemic or just give to family or jyst add wrspped treats. Love the cement planters and coasters but I think my fav is the clothespin trivet. It reminds me of a snowflake. Thanks so much Liz for these adorable homemade gift ideas! ❤🎄❤
Hi Liz. I made these coasters last year using napkins. I used dishwasher safe Mod Podge so that they could be wiped down if necessary. Also, I cannot access the Holiday Cookie printable. I understand that this was from four years ago but my granddaughter just moved into her first apartment and I thought I would give her the cookie jar and ingredients.
@@kymzanmiller2493 it is a newer formula of modge podge that makes things waterproof & if put on glass it can be placed on top dishwasher shelf. I used it on a coaster made of paper & it's very waterproof
I liked the coasters. I have made some with paper napkins. I put cork on the bottom to protect the table top. I am sewing some bowl cozies for my adult children as a homemade gift.
I use Mod Podge all the time! I would also spray a lacquer over the top of the coaster tile after the Mod Podge dries. I just like my projects to be super-durable.
Love all the ideas! I really like the dog treat idea, as I have 4 neighbors who, our dogs, "exchange" gifts every year. This will take a lot less time for me than making homemade dog treats every year :) Thank you for sharing!
Going to make the coasters...I have lots of felt. I will put the felt on the back. That DT self adhesive cork would work on the back of the coasters too!
I’ve made hundreds if glasses with dishwasher safe mod podge and as ling as you don’t soak in a bucket if water it works great. I recommend hAnd washing
I love this Liz!! My favorite ideas are several of these, but I love the ideas of the small jars for cookie mixes, etc. I too love the small jars! What a wonderful idea with the concrete! I've been wanting to get some for craft ideas! Now I know what to do with it!! You are very creative & fun & I love your site!!
As a gardener, you do have to have to have a draining hole. Even if it’s cactus. I don’t like being the person to comment that you did something wrong, but, it will eventually, kill the plant
@@snowypaws8494 Rocks help with drainage, but if there is no where for the water to go it will just sit there and eventually cause root rot. The worst part is, once you can actually tell root rot is happening (visible above the soil) it's too late to save the plant and the whole thing will most likely die :( Unfortunately it is very, very easy to accidentally overwater
Cork on the back of the coasters would kick it up a notch. I think the dog treat jar would have more impact with a white or red transfer. All of these are great ideas 👍🏻
I've been making coasters out of tiles for years, I use alcohol inks and once dry I spray with a heat sealer then use either cork or sticky back felt to back them.
These are all AMAZING! I have 3 daughter in laws and I really want to give them something that is not only useful, nice and heartfelt which is why I love DIY. Unfortunately this year, technically the past 16 months have been exceptionally difficult for our family. My husband had a massive stroke and now has 87% brain damage. (This happened 7/19/20) completely outta nowhere. He was a healthy/active 40yr man with zero health conditions and zero family history of strokes. In a literal instant our entire world changed! I’m his sole caregiver as he is unable to do simply activities of daily living…I feed him, bathe him, take him to the restroom, dress him as he is unable. This has absolutely devastated us financially, just keeping our utilities on, a roof over our head, his medical treatment/medications/speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy, having enough food in the house…like I said it’s been extremely difficult in every aspect. So we don’t have much money for Christmas. So these gifts are so helpful and I love all of them! Thank you!! 🙏❤️
I loved the cookie mix and the coasters with pictures of the grandchildren happy faces. There's enough space at the below the pics to write the year. I liked Wendy's idea to use cork on the back to prevent scratching the furniture. Thanks for all your fabulous ideas!
@@lauranewman7606 you take cut up vanilla beans and put in a jar with vodka. Shake the jars every couple of days for the first month and then every once in a while after that. My daughter and I made coasters just like you did (except we turned all the pictures to sepia tone and put felt onto the bottom. That was about five years ago and they still look great☺️
You had me at “or you could just keep them yourself and put them behind you on your backdrop” 😂🤣 Subscribed based on the look on your face at that very moment! Loved it!
Made the coasters about 20 years ago and put felt on the bottom. Still using them. Love the cookie jar and the trivet. But I think I would have coffee stained the clothes pins before gluing them.
Thank you so much for these ideas. I especially appreciate the cement diy. I have seen diys by people doing the larger ones and felt intimidated by there size since I've never tried them and afraid if I made a mistake all the money and hard work would be a waste. But starting out small would give me the confidence to get yours and more a try.
As a teacher, we don’t want homemade cookie mix, homemade hot chocolate mix, candy, bath bombs, lotions or coffee mugs. The thought it great, but we can only have so many coffee mugs. If you want to get your teacher something, get them a gift card to Target, Walmart, the local teaching store or ask if they have an Amazon classroom wishlist.
Yeah, I think food is only if you know someone really, really well. I mean, I've seen some people's kitchens. Just saying. Scents are so incredibly personal that unless you're certain, find something else to give. With allergies and preferences, lotions, bath stuff, and even candles can just get regifted or unused.
I would completely disagree with Dany Rae !! As a 40 yr old woman who has been working in early childhood education as well as working with “height needs / low income” families for aprox 18-20 years Also growing up with an elementary school teacher, and now a sister in law in education, we don’t do it for the gifts ! Like what cold hearted ungrateful human being, I have got to be missing something?!? A home made gift is from the heart a gift card is just plastic that you can buy more plastic material good with. The VERY BEST gift from a child, or familiy member is a genuine thank you ! When you hear a child say “you say thank you, I will never forget you were my favorite because you didn’t judge me, or when a parent and a child can say “you saved my life” “You saved my child and gave them a future! THAT IS PRICELESS!!!
@@elizb82 A gift made by a child is different than these gifts presented in this video. Those are amazing. I’d rather get a child made drawing any day of the week rather than a gift card or mass made item. I also worked in a very high needs school (on a reservation). I understand people not being able to afford gifts. They are never expected and always appreciated. My point is, don’t waste your money on these types of gifts. If you can make these types of things, you are spending money. Ask teachers what they need for their classroom. Also, I work my rear off for my students. 15 years. I’ve cried many tears and spent many dollars on my students including buying clothing and food. It’s very disappointing and frustrating to be called a cold hearted ungrateful human being by a fellow educator. Maybe ask some questions next time before name calling.
I like the beaded wood initial hanger best. For Christmas I bought 40 hanging wooden cross ornaments in the craft section and decorated all of them different with paint, sticker jewels and pearls. All have been wrapped without a name so I won't know which one each recipient is getting! So, a surprise for me too!
Thank you so much!!! I will be making the coasters for my class. I love giving gifts to my students but it gets very costly. This idea is perfect for Christmas!!
I’ve used cork from Michael’s, they sell the sheets of cork for scrapbooking, should be around $1 and it’s enough to cover the backs of all and not so thick that it takes away from the tile.
We made the trivets as kids, only we took it a step further and added glass beads going around the circle. I'm doing a big tea themed Christmas gift for my best friend and one of these would be great to add in.
An easy way to pack down the dry ingredients is to use a potatoes masher in a wide mouth jar. Just trace the round end of your potatoes masher onto a piece of cardboard. Cut out the circle. Lay a piece of cling film (saran wrap) over the cardboard disc and potatoes masher and gather near the handle. This gives a flat surface to really "pound" the ingredients down - great job for the kiddos.
Like the picture coasters of your girls. Another thing I like is to buy some cork board & you could cut it to fit the bottom of your coasters & glue onto them. This way you can protect your wood or glass tables.
hmmmmm..which one? liked them all-- the clothespin trivet will be one for this year! my younger daughter and her friends create their presents (all around 28 years old) and am sharing this with her. always a bit of sunshine when i see you pop into my feed :)
I loved everyone. Thank you for these great ideas. They are affordable and so easy to do. I'm going to do each of my children's fur babies and gift those. I think I'll apply cork on the bottoms of each one so the don't scratch furniture
I went to Home Depot to do the coaster gift. They no longer sell the tiles individually. But I bought a box of 100 for 6.00! Looks like this is going to be a hobby for me!!!
You might want to put some peel and stick cork on the back of the coasters to protect the surface they sit on, especially if they are used for hot drinks. I think you can get the cork at the dollar store or Walmart or a craft store like Michaels. Just a thought.
On your tile coasters - I cut flat cork (or felt) to size and glued to bottoms to create a soft cushion to keep from scratching other tiles and furniture surfaces.
This is seriously the BEST DIY video I have ever watched. I am going to combine the concrete planter with the wood slice and bead project for some family gifts. I have wood slices from our tree ready to go!
I like the cookie jar idea, and it's giving me ideas for a few other food things to gift in jars or pans etc! I made picture coasters of my kids for my parents years ago and they still use them, one of the best gifts ever! Thank you!
For Christmas, I made a gift for my great niece as a gift for her mom and dad. It was key ring made with a wine cork and strung colored beads in her mom and dad’s favorite colors and silver beads to add a little pop. Of course I made them to look like a 6 YO made and they really liked them!!!
The jar for the treats would be really cute too if you put a mix in like you do with the cookies but for homemade dog biscuits and then instructions on how to make them.
My favorite was the "cookie jar". When Christmas is over and the weather is cold, you can have cookies! The one thing I would do differently on the picture coasters is to put the self-adhesive cork sheet on the back. Great ideas....thank you!

Use the dishwaher safe Mode Podge on your coasters ❤ I made coasters from 100% paper use them all the time & have washed them and no damage 😀
That's a great idea.
Mod Podge
What is dishwasher safe Modge Podge?
@@kymzanmiller2493 it is a newer formula of modge podge that makes things waterproof & if put on glass it can be placed on top dishwasher shelf. I used it on a coaster made of paper & it's very waterproof
@@kymzanmiller2493 I don't know..but it's Mod Podge..not "Modge Podge".
I liked the coasters. I have made some with paper napkins. I put cork on the bottom to protect the table top. I am sewing some bowl cozies for my adult children as a homemade gift.
Hi Liz, I love your clothespin coaster idea! Great instructions. I could watch your creations all day long...!
These are such original ideas! I feel like gift videos get repetitive but I was pleasantly surprised with the creativeness of these DIYS!
Hi C C.! Thanks so much for watching my video. 😊
Liz, these are fantastic gift ideas! Favorite, if I have to choose, is the concrete planters. I can't wait to give them a try.😊
Going to make the coasters...I have lots of felt. I will put the felt on the back. That DT self adhesive cork would work on the back of the coasters too!
I love the coaster idea! But Mod Podge isn't waterproof-- polycrylic would be a better choice!
The dishwasher safe mod podge is amazing
I was thinking the same thing because I used Mod Podge one time and it got sticky when it got wet.
I’ve made hundreds if glasses with dishwasher safe mod podge and as ling as you don’t soak in a bucket if water it works great. I recommend hAnd washing
Have made coasters numerous times with Modge Podge and have had no issues 🤔
I recently learned there are like a bazillion different types of Modge Podge. Who knew?!?
You can also put felt or cork on the back of the coasters for furniture protection.
Amazon sells cork 4/4 squares. Just peel and stick. May need to trim a small amount
Hi Deborah Moreno! Thanks so much for watching my video. 😊
Love the cement planters. Thanks to all you RUclips DIYers everyone is getting handmade gifts this year. Thx for sharing 💜
Hi Linda Trout. It's my pleasure to share. 😄
Loved the concrete plant holders! That was super cool. Gave me an idea for a co-workers Christmas gift. Thanks
what type of paint did she use on the concrete?
Words cannot express how much I appreciate when we're given free printables. TFS & God Bless...
I wouldn't exactly say these are DIY gifts I hadn't seen before...but all are cute for sure.
Yes, girl! I cherish handmade gifts better than store bought. U have some great ideas and I really love the cookie one.
I love how creative you are!!What size are the jars for the cookie mix? Thanks for the free printable.
That's what I need to know 😁
I love this Liz!!
Concrete evaporates humidity, I take it it's not enough or evaporates fast enough?
@@TheLadybughug
Depends on how much it’s glazed. If there is a good amount of non glazed pot, it will allow some evaporation
i’ve seen people put some rocks at the bottom of a pot so the plant isn’t touching the bottom, would something like that work?
@@snowypaws8494 Rocks help with drainage, but if there is no where for the water to go it will just sit there and eventually cause root rot. The worst part is, once you can actually tell root rot is happening (visible above the soil) it's too late to save the plant and the whole thing will most likely die :( Unfortunately it is very, very easy to accidentally overwater
@@sleeeeennnnaa okay thanks, i have the problem of underwatering my plants right now but i have two that are doing pretty good
Love the little concrete planters. I'm picturing all kinds of shape and sizes and designs. Bravo!
Loved all of them! I’m gonna try making the cement planters!💕
I'm so glad you love it, Sabrina Diefenderfer. Have fun watching! 💕
Cork on the back of the coasters would kick it up a notch. I think the dog treat jar would have more impact with a white or red transfer. All of these are great ideas 👍🏻
The cookie jar was a pretty, cheerful gift idea. Liked the planters too.
I've been making coasters out of tiles for years, I use alcohol inks and once dry I spray with a heat sealer then use either cork or sticky back felt to back them.
I absolutely love them all..going to make grandparents a Christmas decorations with pictures on wooden ornaments
I'm so glad you love it, kim holst. Have fun watching! 💕
Thank you!! 🙏❤️
I am loving these ideas! Did you do a video on your backdrop? I love it! It's something different than hook board.
I loved the cookie mix and the coasters with pictures of the grandchildren happy faces. There's enough space at the below the pics to write the year. I liked Wendy's idea to use cork on the back to prevent scratching the furniture. Thanks for all your fabulous ideas!
Hi Rebecca Quigley. I'm glad you loved that one. Thank you!😍
Can’t pick a favorite. Want to make them all.
Me too
We have made the coasters a few times. We added felt dots from DT to the bottom to protect your table. Bug hit at our house.
I made homemade vanilla extract for gifts this year.
How? I use it so much and always wonder how to make my own.
@@lauranewman7606 you take cut up vanilla beans and put in a jar with vodka. Shake the jars every couple of days for the first month and then every once in a while after that. Let sit for 3 months at least but the longer it sits the better it gets. That’s it. 😊 There are tons of videos on how to do it.
@@jennifersmith6259 thank you. I will try.
The clothes pin trivit took me back to my mom. We had a whole bunch of these back in the 80s. Flashback from the past. Love all your projects.😎
Tiles are super rough on the bottom, definitely need felt added so they don’t scratch furniture
Lol the whole point of coasters is that they protect the table 😂
My daughter and I made coasters just like you did (except we turned all the pictures to sepia tone and put felt onto the bottom. That was about five years ago and they still look great☺️
You had me at “or you could just keep them yourself and put them behind you on your backdrop” 😂🤣 Subscribed based on the look on your face at that very moment! Loved it!
Haha!! I laughed out loud too
Made the coasters about 20 years ago and put felt on the bottom. Still using them. Love the cookie jar and the trivet. But I think I would have coffee stained the clothes pins before gluing them.
Seriously? Gifts we haven’t seen before? Honey, these have been around for years.
Hi sandra stokes! Thanks so much for watching my video. 😊
How about coal and sticks
Or better yet, nothing.
Oh -and let’s have all students go to charter schools
A homemade gift from a student means more than any gift card...
I would completely disagree with Dany Rae !!
As a 40 yr old woman who has been working in early childhood education as well as working with “height needs / low income” families for aprox 18-20 years
Also growing up with an elementary school teacher, and now a sister in law in education, we don’t do it for the gifts ! Like what cold hearted ungrateful human being, I have got to be missing something?!?
A home made gift is from the heart a gift card is just plastic that you can buy more plastic material good with.
The VERY BEST gift from a child, or familiy member is a genuine thank you !
When you hear a child say “you say thank you, I will never forget you were my favorite because you didn’t judge me, or when a parent and a child can say “you saved my life”
“You saved my child and gave them a future!
I'm so glad you liked it, Louise Vitanza! Stay tuned for more fun videos. 😊
Lmao most definitely have seen all of these already diy by someone else. What a weird clickbait.
Those coasters are just lovely gifts!
These are amazing! I plan on making the picture coasters, the cookie jar and the initial tassel.
We made the trivets as kids, only we took it a step further and added glass beads going around the circle. I'm doing a big tea themed Christmas gift for my best friend and one of these would be great to add in.
That's great! I wish you all the best on your project, Cubbi Bear. 😍
The gift in a jar is fun. You can make so many different things to go into the jars like: make a tag kit, make pom pom garland kit. What fun.
Oh, thanks for that suggestion, Stephanie Sheridan. I appreciate it. Happy crafting! 😉
hmmmmm..which one? liked them all-- the clothespin trivet will be one for this year! my younger daughter and her friends create their presents (all around 28 years old) and am sharing this with her. always a bit of sunshine when i see you pop into my feed :)
I love the coasters and the tassles. I am going to make the tassels to go along with gifts this year!!
I love the photo coasters & think i will do this for my grown daughters with their children! Great idea. Thanks Liz
Really like the cookie jar, my grandson will love it - also the concrete planters. Thanks for sharing. Loved the ideas.
I still use my moms red tea kettle. I keep it on my stove. Constant reminder of her. ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Julia McKernan. I really appreciate you saying that. Thank you for watching my videos. 😍
All of them were pretty great. My favorite has to be the picture coasters. Perfect grandparent gift! 🎁
I like the cookie jar idea, and it's giving me ideas for a few other food things to gift in jars or pans etc! I made picture coasters of my kids for my parents years ago and they still use them, one of the best gifts ever! Thank you!
How anyone can give a thumbs down on this vid is beyond me. I really loved it. Cool ideas!
All great gift ideas but my favorite are the coasters. They can be personalized in so many different ways. Thanks for sharing.
Clothespin trivet is my favorite. So versatile and easy and inexpensive! Could be wall decor in multiples or base for hook in laundry room, etc.
My favorite is the beads with the wooden initial. Tfs.
For the coasters shouldn't you glue felt to the back of the coasters? So they don't scratch the surface they put them on.
My favorite was the "cookie jar". When Christmas is over and the weather is cold, you can have cookies! The one thing I would do differently on the picture coasters is to put the self-adhesive cork sheet on the back. Great ideas....thank you!
