The mid air collision between 2 planes wasn’t just a nightmare it actually happened. Big parts of wreckage did land in the School playground that you were at, however, Richie wasn’t at School that day - he was at his Grandfather’s funeral. 3 students died and 75 were injured. The date was 31 January 1957 a mere 2 years and 4 days before Richie’s own death in a plane crash.

  • @willfade7994

I met Ritchie Valens’ cousin, ironically, on the anniversary of that tragic plane crash in 2019. It was my friend’s birthday and she loves karaoke, so we threw her a surprise party at her favorite karaoke lounge. I remember singing ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’ by The Bangles and a guy approached me afterward to tell me what a good voice I have and that he thought he was hearing the song on the radio when he walked into that karaoke bar. He was very friendly. After he walked away, the DJ said “Do you know who he is?” I said no, so he told me “that’s Ritchie Valens’ cousin! You know, La Bamba.” It blew my mind because I had literally been posting about Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, etc. that day on Facebook talking about it being the anniversary! So bizarre. So I went and talked to the guy and he didn’t even realize that it was the day of the plane crash! Turns out, he’s actually Ritchie Valens’ father’s youngest cousin. He never knew Ritchie but he looked so much like Ritchie. It was a trip. He lives in Huntington Beach! I asked if he’s going to sing and he said “Yeah, but I’m not as good as Ritchie.” Lol He actually sang pretty well! We talked about how I also was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley…
Thanks for doing yet another awesome video and tribute to Ritchie Valens. He was so talented. The world truly lost some of the greatest musicians on what is known as “the day the music died.”

I’m a Pacoima native and resident. Pacoima Junior High School would have gone to the 9th grade at that time. And he attended San Fernando High School when he came to fame. The movie “La Bamba” also used SFHS as a shooting location as well. I attended both schools and at the time (late 90’s early 00’s), there were still murals of him on the campuses.

My Dad was the work experience counselor at San Fernando High, but not during the time Richie Valens attended. At that time Dad taught at San Fernando Junior High, where Richie’s music played on the juke box in the gym where Dad supervised after school activities. I was a toddler at the time, but I do believe I absorbed that music into my soul!
Wasn’t it neat to see SFHS “Home of the TIGERS” in La Bamba? Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!

Rosie still visits his grave & helps take care of it, she and his nephew Robert visit on his death day & birthday to. You can see them there often at times. There is no video of Ritchie other that when he was on a tv show. A lot of footage of him was lost.

My friend and I went to see La Bamba in the theater at least 3 times. We were obsessed lol. I cried every time- still do. Could tell others in the theater were crying as well. He was so young and left such a big mark on the world. RIP Ritchie ❤

I have never understood leaving coins at graves could someone explain it nicely to me. I remember as a kid listening to my sisters records and singing La Bamba while strumming her guitar, I've always loved the 50's rock & roll. Thanks for this one you brought back memories I had forgot I had. Love to you both and your fans.

From what I have read. It's meant as a sign of respect to the deceased person. Or simply a sign that others have visited the gravesite. Some people leave rocks instead of coins for example Shemp Howard and Curly Howard of The 3 Stooges people have left rocks at their graves, I think that people can really leave whatever they want to there. I have watched a video on The graves of Depression Era outlaws Bonnie and Clyde and people have left bullets, shell casings and coins on their graves.

The dead need the coins 🪙🪙 to pay the ferryman 🚣‍♂after he takes them across the river Styx in the afterlife. But don't forget, 🎶Don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side 🎶 (Chris de Burgh)

That school is also where that plane crashed killing a few kids and injuring over 70 from the engines and main cabin breaking up in midair. It wasn’t a piper, but it was a collision between a us airforce F89 scorpion and a DC7. it was pretty bad for the kids on the ground.
