How much does it cost to build a pole barn? This video provides a full material and labor cost breakdown of our 36’ x 24’ x 12’ Pole Barn building. The total cost includes excavation and site preparation, post frame pole barn construction, concrete cost, electrical cost and a driveway installation. This was a months long process and involved multiple subcontractors to complete the build. We couldn’t be more excited to complete this project and finally have a safe place to park our Airstream RV out from the elements.

I had Carolina Carports install a 12’ wide by 12’ high legs/15’ high peak by 30’ long metal carport with fully enclosed sides and full gables on both ends for our 2019 Flying Cloud 27FB for $6k. Site was level already so just put gravel down. Install was done in one day.

That's the way to go. Also counties dont usually see these metal carports as permanent buildings so no extra taxes.

Before you said where you lived, I thought you were in SC. I was born in Aiken, love that area. We moved to Charleston years ago and now we have moved out into the country along the coast. I’m looking to do something like this for our Winnebago, I already have power on the back of our property. Thank you for the video and ideas!

Thanks for the complete breakdown of the costs. Your pole barn really looks nice. Adding concrete to the floor vs. gravel is a smart move as well. And, the rain gutters will diminish any erosion along the sides of the barn. Be sure to consider where the downspouts will be flowing to ensure you mitigate erosion from the downspouts.
Gutters will be one of our next projects before the Spring rainy season arrives. But first, we need to restock the bank account 💰or plant a few money trees 🙂

We really wanted the design and build to be “future proof” as much as possible. The ability to fully enclosed the building, expand the electrical, easy access in and out of the building, as well as adding to our property value were all areas we tried to take into consideration.
Hell yea brother! OU all the way! Class of '04 here. We just bought our land in Fort Gibson and we're doing damn near the same thing. Only difference is we're building a home right next to it while we live in our camper for a few years. Great to see others out there getting it done, and enjoying retirement. Way to go bro!

I hear that I'll soon be a retired truck driver because of my job I lived in an apartment all my working years I have 40 acres but I'm not going to pay some contactor 200 k to build me a house and I don't plan on dying in my apartment when I have 40 acres in beautiful northern Michigan with a good view of lake superior
Ouch 43k is a little bit over my budget and so is your airstream but any how thanks for the info I plan on getting a RV and building a totally enclosed pole barn(upper Michigan) very cold putting a wood stove to keep it warm and toasty along with my John Deere tractor I may use my own logs off my 40acres to build the pole barn😂

We have a water hydrant nearby that we can reach with a few hoses connected. Construction and materials costs will only continue to increase over time with inflation so now was as good a time as any to build. Thanks for watching and safe travels.

Was funny about the electrician we have noticed finding electricians and plumbers can be two of the most difficult to find and especially last minute can be expensive. Love the property. Just my opinion, but I think the post frame (pole barn) construction gives you more options than the galvanized steel kits.

We haven’t but talking with the builder he said it would be easy to enclose and not too expensive.
Looks good. I retired in May from federal law enforcement and moved to Greenwood, SC from Idaho. The house we bought already had a 30x50 concrete slab so we just put an enclosed rv barn with a 14x14 door and a 10x10 door and had a 200 amp service put in with lights and outlets and 2 50 amp plugs. I think it was Carolina Carports that did oursi wanna say we were around 42k but like i said the slab was already there.

great video! Realize that you don't need a 30A RV plug if you're just going to keep batteries charged and use 12V side of the camper. the 30A part comes in if you want to run the AC while living in the camper. so for storage 15A is more than enough.
But if you have friends that want to stay the weekend…
We do use the AS as a guest room on occasion. Additionally the 30 amp allows for friends to boondocks and plug-in as needed. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching and for your question. Unfortunately, I don’t think a ballpark cost comparison would be possible. There are so many variables that would needed to be considered that it would make any accurate cost estimates virtually impossible. For example, material costs can change on a weekly to monthly basis. Hope this makes sense. Cheers.
Looks great, I’m looking to do the same in S.Fla. Regarding the electrical, is that MC cable (metal clad) going in and out of that outlet box? Snot sure why the electrician did that, it’s not meant to be used outdoors
So I’m no electrician, but it is my understanding that MC 10/2 wire may be used for branch, feeder and service for distribution in commercial, industrial, and multi-residential construction. I think it can be installed exposed, or concealed indoors or outdoors, but will check with my electrician. Thanks for the comment.

Yes. We wanted the ability to expand the electrical in the future if needed.

Did you consider lightning protection?
I don’t have concrete, but I ha a pad built from crush and run, 18’x36’, 14’ openings on each end. Gables enclosed, sides enclosed to the ground. Upgraded heavy gauge posts, bracing. They also cut a swale longer than the building to divert the water, roof and side panels vertical. $3,500 for clearing and pad, $7,200 for the building, less than 2 days it was done. $10,700 all in. I could have done concrete for at most another $3,000. Yours is a little larger but seems pricey, but sure the wood posts are more beefy. Thanks

I live in central Florida and I have a 31 foot land yacht airstream but I have not found anywhere near here particularly on the coast where I can just legally park an airstream and live in it… Sure I can stay in a park but I don’t want to live in a trailer park. I plan on having a 20‘ x 10‘ outside building with washer dryer for bathroom and walk-in closet but also be able to pull the trailer out just like you have if I want to travel if you have any ideas on where you can do that I’d be very interested, I love the quality of work that you did
Hi…I’m not sure about the location and zoning restrictions in central Florida. If you own property, then I would think your county could tell you what the requirements would be to park and live in your Airstream. If you are looking for property, then I would have a realtor find property that meets your requirements. Once you have a property you want to build on, I would recommend that you talk with several builders and ask them for references from other customers who have had work done. nice pole shed.... just a question....did the roof have any ridge air vents?... are you concerned how the structure will withstand stronger winds?.... looks great.
Since it’s an open pole barn there are no ridge vents. As for strong winds, it is designed and rated to withstand winds up to 120 mph. The 6x6 posts are 4 feet in the ground. So unless we have tornado or hurricane force winds we should be good 🤞. Thanks for watching and the question.

No snow concerns in this part of South Carolina, just pine needles 🌲 piled up. Because we have no snow load restrictions, the trusses are spaced 12’ apart which kept the build cost down. I assume that would not work in Wisconsin.

Very nice.... glad you finally mentioned the gutters. Also, I might add since you own a truck that can haul a trailer, why dig a trench by hand.? Ditchwitch trencher here is about 150 for 8 hours. That includes a trailer. Ditch would have been done in about 1 hour. I was just curious.
We considered renting a ditch witch but we had electric lines, septic lines, water lines, and gas lines that we had to dig around. We were afraid the trencher would have caused more damage and more $$ to repair the broken lines than just hand digging. At least we have no rocks on the property. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for the information. Sweat equity is great to bring down costs. You could have rented a trencher to make it easier and faster and still saved a boat load. You should have taken down the trees to save alot as well. 350 plus per tree? Wow. Here they try to get 500 -1000 per tree from homeowners that just do not know. If the trees are in a dangerous place, too cloose to other structures it could make some since to pay more but your area was open. You could of bought a chainsaw and saved alot and had a chaisaw for future cleanups... in the end if you are happy that is what matters. I take exception to "contractors" over charging clients. Great video! Could you comment a little more on why you chose a pole barn over just a concrete pad with power? I owned a motorhome a while back and couldn’t build due to zoning restrictions and just had a stone pad and 20 amp power. But as a I dream of retirement, wondering if I should set aside money to do as you have done when we get an RV. Thanks in advance!
We went with a pole barn (post & frame) construction for many reasons. First, it would provide the protection we wanted and needed for the RV and truck. Second, if I ever want to completely enclose the pole barn and turn it into a shop / garage this type of construction allows for an easy conversion. Third, this building will add value to our property much more than just a concrete pad or even a metal frame Carport building that many people build. Hope this helps in your decision. Safe travels.

43 K. IN MY MIND SEEMS REASONABLE. WE ARE DEVELOPING OUR OFF GRID HOMESTEAD THIS COMING SPRING. ITS IN THE HIGH DESERT OF NE NEVADA. DOLLARS ADD UP FAST AND SUCCESS IS MEASURED BY THE SMALLEST NUMBER OVER BUDGET.
That’s good to hear. It’s always hard to compare construction costs across different regions. At the end of the day we are very happy with the results and don’t feel like we overpaid.

Could you put in sewer connections and water source so you could functionally use the RV on site?
Hi Pat…we do have a water source nearby (~100’ away) that I use to fill the fresh water tank. I don’t leave it connected to the AS because i don’t want to drive over and damage the water hose. As for septic, it would have been cost prohibitive to put in a separate septic system just for the AS. However we do have a “dump station” capability on the property. I just have to use a portable black tank dolly. Thanks for the question. Happy camping and safe travel.

The property has a septic system that I can use as a dump station if needed. We also have a water hydrant nearby if needed.

No re-bar or wire mesh in the slab??
We added fiber to the concrete vs wire mesh. It provides the same benefit. Re-bar is not recommended for 4” slabs.
How do you keep birds and wasps from building nests in that open air environment?
Don…the building is newly constructed so we haven’t had that issue yet. However, once the weather warms, that may be an issue that we will need to consider in the future. Thanks for the question and safe travels.
All you need now is a septic tank and you can live in the RV full time!!!! ;-)
We do have a septic system on the property with access similar to a dump station. However we plan to use the Airstream only as a guest house (if needed) when we’re not traveling.

Why no rebar in the crete?
Not needed or recommended in a 4” slab. Used primarily in foundations and structural walls for added strength.
Why no wire mesh in that concrete slab?
We used fiber reinforced concrete. They mix in the fiber elements into the concrete before pouring. Supposed to work just a good as the wire mesh but less expensive and won’t rust.

Never really thought about it, but like the concept. Perhaps someday?
Why do Airstreams have large red numbers on the. front?
The big red numbers (BRN) indicate that you are a member of the Airstream Club International (ACI)
In my state you don’t need a licensed electrician as long as it passes code so I do it myself
I debated doing the electrical myself, and even priced out the additional parts needed (~$400). Because I was not confident that I could DIY the electrical and pass code we decided to hire an electrician to complete the install. He provided the remaining materials and labor for $684. Considering what just the additional materials would have cost me, I thought we got a great deal. FYI - we had one estimate at $4,900 and another at $3,800 for the electrical work. Needless to say, we are glad we shopped around and happy with the electrician we hired. Thanks for watching and safe travels.

You’re absolutely right, we didn’t have the money to spend either. When we first started gathering cost estimates we were surprised how much everything was going to cost. Overall, it took us several years of planning and saving our money before we could build the pole barn. It took a lot of patience. I’m glad we built it when we did, as I suspect building costs are only going to increase in the future. Thanks for watching.

Yeah…I kind of thought the concrete price was too high 💰. In hindsight, I should have contracted the concrete myself and not had the builder include it in his building cost. His markup cost was too high. Thanks for watching!

I hate when they don't put plywood or osb under the metal . I saw my neighbors go up 5 years ago and he has had his metal blow off 3 times and the 3 rd time was this past saturday when we had high winds 3 panels came off . We live in southern VA near the NC border . . He had to pay yet again to replace the panels as the screws ripped holes in the panels as they blew off. The color doesn't quite match , but you get what you get these days . It was built for his RV also and made similar to yours . Severla side panels were bent in or riped off also . Weather report said 40 mph winds with gusts up to 50 mph . But like me he lives up on a hill and exposed to more wind . The cost was 2 thousand and some dollars . He kept the old panels to see if he can use them to make raised gardens , so at least they don't go to waste . My suggestion on raised gardens because i got panels 2 years ago from a friend who had his metal blown off . I love my raised garden beds I built for free and a little labor on my part and some free cow manure from my neighbors farm

@@thewrightlife I went to get wood today and got my carjack out and lifted the side a little to support the sag . It is a 3 car carport plywood and metal roof over that . But we get really strong winds up the hill . As a matter of fact since the epic ice storm I have lost over 50 trees in the woods behind my house . I feel like the movie the money pit by TOM HANKS . I have weak trees . I am a 70 year old woman and never expected to have to do this .I really thought I had the carport over built with 6 4x4's down each side . I wanted 6x6's like I used on the 100 ft long front porch but could not get them at that time and the trusses were made by a truss company . I hope you don't have to go through this either . It is a big headache and I thought this month putting the ice and water shield and new roofing was my only headache NOPE surprise surprise goodluck and wish you the best
