Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.
On todays episode we checkout three chipper shredder machines. These machines are designed to shred, chip and create mulch out of twigs, branches, trees and bushes.
I go through a series of tests to see how well these machines create wood chips. These mulcher machines are a great tool to have around for yard cleanup. The machines are able to mulch chip and shred branches and twigs even with the leaves attached. Making leaf cleanup made easy. Please let me know your thoughts and hit me up in the comments below.

What did Baby Boy say? 'Love you Daddy!' ('Cause your a NUT! lol)
you are making money by promoting a company that works hard to harm the american worker. hopefully your next review is seeing which gas powered wood chipper can best re-enact on your ass that scene from the movie Fargo...
What would be cool, is to see how they hold up long-term.
I know that is a stretch for a review.
LG... August this year I looked at a gazillion platforms for a mulcher shredder... Ended up saying "will these toys (less than $700) disappoint?" And told myself "FORGET ABOUT IT". At that time. I liked the Earthwise... YOUR COMPREHENSIVE DEMONSTRATION WAS SO REAL... No dog in the fight... Compelling ANALYSIS... HOW YOU COMMUNICATED is a GIFT...and I owe you a debt of gratitude... I'm 74 and I needed the help of some equipment but quit on the idea because I thought I would be disappointed... And spend money I didn't have for the privilege. EARTHWISE IT IS ...THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!🙋🌹GA USA 10-31-22👍👍👍
Thanks so much! Love messages like these. I really enjoy doing reviews. so happy to hear you found value in my video.
@@pestandlawnginja LG... I bought and used the EARTHWISE chipper last season and it was fabulous... IT WAS NOT A TOY... I'm very organized so I had all my brush piles in order of complexity... And took a minute to groom the debris to what I knew the machine liked... SUPER DUPER EXPERIENCE AND THAT WOOD MULCH WAS SO FINE AND LOVELY... It's exactly what I needed!!! I AM EVER GRATEFUL...🙋🌹GA USA 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💕
@@sarahrose1665 rad! love hearing it.
Lawn Ginja: Your videos seem to be custom made for me. I know that is not true of course but the content is all about garden things I am interested in and NEED help with. Thank you so much for taking time to make these videos
You're welcome Larry! Thanks so much for watching and commenting
14ga wire is fine. Just make sure you're on a circuit that can handle more than 15amps. Wire will just get warm if you're running it a really long time.
Thanks for the comparison video. I have bought and used a number of leaf/branch chippers and found each has its issues. For ONE, it works best if the branches are still moist but the leaves are DRY. Moist or wet leaves clog up the chutes while the moist branches cut easier. SECOND...straight branches go easiest...but branches that Y out become hard to feed into narrow chutes. They jam at the connection points. I did use both a medium and smaller shredder together for best results. The larger one to chomp into chunks...and then pour the chunks into the smaller unit to grind the chunks into finer pieces. At times I sprayed silicone lube into the hoppers to minimize sticky jam-ups if some damp leaves or juicy material was in the mix. It helps avoid hopper CLOG and downtime dismantling the units to clear the blades. Lastly, the electric units are no match against a gas unit which has much more thrust and power. NOW, how about doing a comparison video on maintaining , sharpening and replacing the blades on these machines. Harbor Freight sells a variety of models but obtaining parts is a struggle. Such is life. Waiting for the additional videos...... J K
Totally agree James! Gotta save up my pennies for the other comparison videos. Love the idea. thanks for watching and sharing your knowledge.
I was looking at the earthwise but after watching this I went with the Sun Joe 602 which was $200 less than the other 2. I primarily need it as a chipper for twigs, sticks, branches. I've used it a few times now, for over an hr each time and had no issues. I'm so glad I watched this video!
Man...I wish you'd done this review last year. I have over 6 hours with the 603E so far and while I have never had problems with it slowing or not chomping anything I put in, everything else you said about it was spot on with my experience. Chute gets packed and needs to be cleared and it chunks woody material not chip. If I had to do it over, for my use, I'd choose the Earthwise.
Good to know! I was a little worried I got a bad unit
These three are exactly what I have on my list. So glad I found your clip, thank you so much for the review.
Glad it was helpful!
Which one did you buy? Was it worth it?
Hello mister Ginja I want to thank you for everything you been helping every single one of us. Watching you videos it make me working harder and happy. You make work easy with your great information. Happy thanksgiving to all of you family friends and people watching you.
Super kind! Thank you!
I bought the grey CJ602E 15-amp last year, it was the color at the time under $100.
Makes great mulch.
Great for sticks, and small branches, let the green/wet stuff dry before chipping. It's better with twigs when the blades are new and when the twigs have dried hard.
Great feedback! Thanks francis
Is it still working? Do you think ot is still worth 100
Still working, also bought another blade for it but haven't reversed the one on it yet. I think a new one is still worth $100 which the red one is right now.
Clearly someone at SunJoe once worked in the auto industry.
“Hey you know what this machine needs....cupholders! People love cupholders!”
😂😂😂 so funny. I'll bet you're right
It kinda looks like the center console from some kind of vehicle. Maybe they just reused the injection molds from something else.
good call!
No Bluetooth? Why no Bluetooth?
This morning I was out chopping out brush at first light. It was 86 F at sunrise, and going up. I have a bottle holder bolted to my Gorilla Cart, cause it’s hydrate or get sick. Clothes completely soaked in a half hour.
Cup holders are a feature, not a joke.
I set a timer to pick up at 9:30, when my skin starts scorching. Welcome to the South.
Thank you for this review. I have the 602. Had it for 4 years now. I'm pleased to know it didn't pass as being the worst ☺️
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks so much! You rock man. Really appreciate the time you took to show us all this. So helpful.
Happy to help! Glad you found value!
I like that earth one... the bin itself is a selling point
it's true!
Nice video. You helped me out a lot. I was looking at chippers today and realized I am one of those that needs to spend the money and get a gasoline powered chipper. I have five maple tree's that are 65 years old each. They were all planted on the same day and they grow past 30 feet. I have to have them topped. But even still, I have branches all the time. I had so many that I sat down on a chair and broke them up and sawed them and put them in 18 brown lawn bags. The big limbs, I sawed up into firewood.
Money maker! Split 3 nice size logs. Throw on top some small branches and twigs. Tie that up with twine. Then put out a sign "CAMPFIRE WOOD $5.00 BUNDLE". I actually made 40 bundles and if you bought two or more you got another tied set of twigs. I sold out on a friday afternoon in about 3 hours. One guy bought 4 bundles and got 4 twig bundles free and he said that would goes for $20 a bundle down by a lake . So, even though I only made 200 bucks, it was still 200 bucks instead of paying someone to haul them away. I still need the shredder.
That’s awesome $$$$
THANK YOU! I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR HOURS!
Glad I could help!
Me to
deciding on the earthwise after much research n youtubing. thanks for the review homie!
Great review, I'm needing one, and this helped a lot. I can't watch a video of stuff going through a chipper/shredder without thinking of that scene in the movie Fargo.
Thanks for watching! hahaha, too funny about fargo.
Your view of the mountain is amazing.
Very helpful video! Saw exactly what I needed to see to make my decision! Very glad I watched this before getting the 603! It wouldn’t have worked out for what I need it for.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the review. Went with the Earthwise because of your recommendation.
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for your review/comparison! I was looking at both the SunJoe 602 and the EarthWise, so your video was spot on for me and a big help deciding which to order
Glad it was helpful! It was a fun experiment
So which did you order? And hows it working as of now? I am also debating on the two you mentioned. Thanks!
@@passion4vintage559 Got the EarthWise. Still getting some use clearing up small branches (under 1.5" inches diameter, about) after storms; relatively light use, but holding up well. I like it! Would buy same for replacement, if necessary. Simple, but always just works, barring one slight caveat.
My only minor complaint (more of a nitpick), if can even call it that: the screw to unlock the hatch (say, to clear a jam), takes a lot of turns by hand, fine if jam once or twice but can get annoying if keeps happening; so go slow, ie feed sticks intentionally vs jamming random handfuls in at once, to avoid repeat jamming, will save time overall. That said, while I would prefer a quick latch or the like, I think the long threaded bolt is intended to be a safety mechanism
I'm quite impressed overall for an electric residential unit, so long as its use case is kept in perspective--a proper gas chipper would eat any electric chipper for lunch, but that's a whole different can of worms :) good luck, whichever you choose!
I'm looking to buy an earthwise for my dad on Christmas. He does yard work and such and after this vid, I'm certain he's gonna love it 😃
That is awesome! Good on you!
I HAD a 603E waiting to be shipped. switched my order after seeing this video. Thanks Ginja!
Good choice!
I really appreciate the thorough review, showing the material and your honesty. Really helped me out than all those videos that show a list of pros and cons and the manufacturer's advertising video.
Thank you, thank you!!
Thanks for the feedback!
thanks for the comparison. I was going to get the 603e, but am now taking a close look at the earthwise.
You're welcome!
I got the Earthwise and am very pleased with it after a few hours of use so far. I have had it jam up a couple of times, but it is relatively easy to open up and clean out. I've also been double grinding some batches to get the stringy stuff and larger leaf bits a bit smaller. And, yes, I'm collecting branches from my neighbor! Componst on!
This is the best of many videos I have seen about electric mulch machines comparison. I did help me in selecting the machine that is right for me, the Earthwise. Thank you.
Huge compliment Jorge! Thank you!
This was a great and incredibly helpful review. Big thumbs up. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for taking the time to make such a detailed review
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching and commenting
That’s one hell of a view you’ve got out back.
Yes for sure! Views all around us here.
Found the Earthwise on sale for $120! One of the best purchases ive ever made!
rad!
Thorough and excellent review video. This made our decision on which unit to purchase SO much easier! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
I have the Earthwise, and just got done shredding 6 douglas fir trees worth of branches that as you know get 6-10 ft long. It will do 1" and smaller with no issues. I even did dozens of branches as big as 1.5" in diameter, but you have to hold them, and pull back to prevent bogging it down and locking up. Still did the job though. I also removed the little spool on the underside, to prevent clogging up. It's there for safety, so you don't shove your hand up underneath, but it can be removed just by pulling it out. I chipped so many branches, I have to get a new set of blades. Luckily they are cheap. Another tip, is to use a 12ga extension cord for minimum voltage drop.
Thanks so much for sharing!
You're so much fun to watch. Thanks for this video!
Thank you! Really appreciate you watching and commenting
Fantastic quality review!
Thank you kindly!
The cj603e is MUCH stronger than the Earthwise (It does slow down some when getting into larger diameter, but it doesn't stop, unlike the Earthwise). I have both. The earthwise jams easily even within specifications and is a pain to unjam (have to remove 8 small philips screws). The reverse function IS handy on the cj603e, because everyone will jam one of these eventually if you use it enough and it saves you from taking the whole machine apart (which by the way, the sunjoe is WAY easier in the event it's jammed in a weird way the reverse function can't fix. Only happened to me once so far.) I'm much happier with the cj603e for reducing volume of debris, but it doesn't shred. Also, the feed shape in the Earthwise is kinda awkward and makes you have to cut your limbs/sticks much smaller before feeding it. It depends on what you need and I hope this helps someone.
great feedback. thanks william
Very helpful. Thank you
This comparison is THE BEST I've ever seen and I've been on a gazillion platforms... I'm 74 and would love to know how to maintain the Earthwise chipper/ it's blades and a link to how to order them etc that would be so awesome... My Earthwise unit comes Monday...SO EXCITED ... I know I should get a life but I just LOVE... YARD WORK! 🙋🌹👍 GA USA. 11-3-22. THANK YOU GINGA... EXCELLENT EXCELLENT VIDEO! ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks Sarah! Glad you found what you needed in the video. These machines from my understanding are "self sharpening" , but they are a wear and tare item. the only one that really self sharpened was the green sunjoe that was more of a chipper than shredder. Hope the machine lived up to your expectations.
Although you mention the loudness, it’s strange you didn’t put one instance of the acoustics, there so much information lost not hearing the motor as it mulches and crunches. That being said nice beard dude, never seen a guy sporting two beards at once, it looks like it’s on fire.
love the feedback! the camera equipment I had was not the best at that time.
Thanks man, your video helped me make a decision regarding these these 3 models.
Perfect!
Extremely helpful. Thanks for sharing. For some strange reason, beyond explanation... I suddenly feel the need to own a shredder/chipper! :-)
LOL do it!
This was great. Was looking at these 3, glad you made this video. I’m going to go with the 602.
Glad I could help
Just received my new SJ603E...and the handle was completely busted when I took it out of the box. Silver lining? Sending it back and getting the Earthwise. Thanks for the excellent demo!
Right on! You're welcome!
what a great video, so glad i watched this before buying one.
breaking down the different types of yard waste you put through it was really helpful. (pun intended)
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! You’re a natural at presentations. I have palm tree fronds to chop up. All I can do is try one. Thanks again for your time!
So nice of you! if the fronds are dry it....... might work. i'm not optimistic if they're fresh
Great review! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
The CJ603 looks like the ideal one for making smoker chips.
True true
this was an excellent comprehenisve review. really appreciate it!
Glad it was helpful!
Good job getting that in before this storm hit!
Kinda lucky hahaha.
Awesome video and so helpful thank you so much
You are so welcome!
great review video, i went with the earthwise, i have lots of tree branches and limbs to chip. I first used it today and it did great.
Thanks for sharing!
great info Ginja. Looking for something that can handle leaves as well as sticks and limbs. Wish you had covered this as well... I'm guessing the earth wise with the hopper would be the best for leaves. Would you agree?
They all such for leaves. I tried it and it was a nightmare. If you want more of an all around system you'll need to spend $400 to $700 and get the gas powered chipper shredders. Harbor freight used to sell a pretty nice one on the low end at $400.
Excellent review! You really covered the stuff I want to know about. Like you, I expected the heaviest machine to perform best.
Now that's what I want for Christmas! Thanks!
Awesome!
Thanks for the reviews - very helpful!
The 602 looks exactly like the harbor freight chipper that I just bought. If I had the choice to do again, I think I would go with the 603. I like it chunky. And cupholders!!!
Right on Tom!
I have a chipper/shredder from Harbor Freight. Users need earplugs plus earmuffs to protect your hearing, but it chops and shreds well. Serious machine.
I've heard about those loud beasts. Need to try it
well done sir.
Thanks Joseph!
Thank you so much for this great comparison! I've almost checked-out the sun joe green but i guess i would go with earthwise because of the bin lmao.
that green is hideous hahaha
Thank you
Happy to help
Nice review
Helped me decide and bought sunjoe 602
Thanks
Glad I could help
I wish I would have found your video before I bought the Sun Joe 603. I'm having the same problem with it providing large chips, and the setting dial does nothing. After watching your video, I would've gone with the Earthwise. :( Note to self for when I need to replace it in a few years.
If you bought it from amazon I'd send it back. I felt that the item is marketed as a shredder / chipper but it didnt shred. The chips work great for camping but I wouldnt consider it great to use as mulch. Overall I wasnt satisfied
Looks lik SunJoe gave you a matching pair of shoes too. Lol.
Great video, that would be perfect for grilling 👍👍
Great idea!
Something to think about: if the resulting chips are too small, they tend to form a solid mat on your garden. Slightly thicker chunks make a better mulch because it lets water and gases through to the soil.
Also, for the little red Sunni, it would be pretty easy to just put a plastic bin under it to keep things tidy and easier to move the mulch to your beds.
all great points
Yea I have that one and it fits a plastic bin nicely. My only issue with mine is the feeders are a pain! You have to feed one branch at a time through the little hole. I know it's designed to keep things that are too big out, but what if you have a ton of tiny little branches? It needs some kind of chute attachment like the Earthwise. That was my reason for landing on this video, looking for some kind of DIY chute or other tip for feeding the smaller stuff into the machine.
Can't you adjust the knob on the side to achieve a finer mulch on the SJ603?
no you cannot
Good work. Big thanks!
Happy to help!
I'd say miser way ... because to upgrade to a box you just hit up the store for a Rubbermaid or sterilite tub of the right height buy 2 slide 1 under and swap when full for easy emptying and no down time also it's imparitive you get 2 of the same so they stack neatly for storage
great idea
those mountains in the background!
we are very spoiled! Thanks for watching
I had ordered a Sun Joe 602 from Home Depot at a great price but 2 days later they cancelled the order. Now the price has shot way up. Bastids! So then I ordered one from Amazon, still an OK price but a bit more than HD was initially. Now it's a week later and it still hasn't shipped yet. Maybe this is divine intervention or some crap like that because now I'm having second thoughts and thinking the Earthwise is a better choice. At this point I'd be spending about a hundred bucks more than I did originally from Home Depot. Maybe it'll be worth the difference? We'll see. I do like the hopper and collection bin on the Earthwise. It just remains to be seen if it's really a hundred dollar upgrade.
That would be soo frustrating! I've had that happen before. The hopper was invalueble from my experience. saves a lot of cleanup time
I have three big oak trees that drop LOTS of leaves on the street, yard and sidewalk.
I roughly rake the biggest concentration of leaves into large piles.
I spread out a tarp next to a pile, then use the garden rake to fling the leaves on the tarp. When loaded up, the tarp gets bunched together and pulled to the compost heap, and the tarp is pulled out from under the leaves, leaving the leaves piled in the compost heap.
So I NEVER wind up actually lifting the leaves, at least not much. The aim is to slide them onto the tarp, and then slide them off of the tarp onto the compost heap.
I did that this morning, and it took two loads and about ten minutes to get rid of most of the leaves.
I don't bother with a polished result at this time, because there are LOTS more leaves waiting to fall!
Any woody material that the compost heap doesn't eat get tossed out and run over with the mower, pulverizing it to shreds.
Awesome 👏 glad you found a system that works for you
Ain’t mulch to it.
Great review as always
👊😂
Very good review! Do you think the Earthwise could chop up about 4X6 pieces of regular cardboard?
I doubt it. Too flimsy and most likely won’t shred it
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks!
Great review, as per others, I wish I had seen it prior to buying the SJ603E. I was slightly disappointed in the results, and after seeing your video, I know why. I got a good buy on it on Overstocked but may write it off for one of the others.
Thanks for sharing. nothing more frustrating than buying a toy that doesn't match the expectations.
Excellent review!
👊😁 thanks
Have you tried to shred plastic?
Was thinking buying earthwise.
I have lots brush and leaves but lots plastic too. I would like to know if anyone has tried plastic shredding. Good job of testing these schredders, thank-you.
it won't really do a good job shredding plastic in my opinion. if the plastic is hard and completely stiff it'll do ok.
@@pestandlawnginja
Thanks for that, I would Like to know if soneone tried milk jugs and pop bottles, not bags though.
Precious plastic has couple nice crusher builds. That or buy one..
So far no one replied they tried it and didnt work.
Thanks! I literally have all three of these in my Amazon cart and was dithering as I pile up the former jungle.
Little Red, it is.

Great video.....for initial use, but what about maintenance? Example, how expensive and difficult is it to either sharpen or replace blades? That would have given you a 5/5 in my view. Still, very helpful!! Many thanks!!
Great feedback! Thank you
Thank you sir... You have convinced me.... That I need a gas model 🤣
good call!
603 does good for bagging.
agree :)
Pour the green sun joe back into the red 602.
LOL for reals though.
have you ever shredded palm fronds? what do you recommend?
I haven’t but I don’t believe it would work well.
Nice
thanks!
The blades on the Sun Joe 15 amp I have are reversable. I turned my chipper into an animal by shimming the blades. It self feeds better now.
Rad!
More good info. Thanks!
You're welcome! Have a great day
Awesome, just curious if they would work on Pompass Grass? I was rooting for the red, but agree the SunJoe wins
I’m not optimistic it would do well with that type of grass
“This guy🙄”😂
yup, that's me
Question no asked is price and availability of replacement blades.Once blades are dull and new are not available you are facing purchase of a new machine.
its true
I was told the sun-jo blades needed to be sharpened real often. Softer steel maybe?
the sun joe does have much softer steel and it has a blade adjuster that sharpens itself. it does need to be replaced more often.
The thing about the Sun Joes, or designs like them seem to be a hassle with collecting the chips. Looking at these chippers, can't you run those twigs that go through a second time and shred them on a second pass, at least some of them?
You could but it wouldn’t be very easy or fast. The holes are soo small to put them through
Note.
Here you also appeared to have one as a disc chipper(think commercial/council version but with electric instead of diesel) and 2 that essentially use rollers to chop it up
fair assessment
@@pestandlawnginja I like feeder rollers better lol.
Idk if it was one feeder roller or 2.
Great video I got the 602. I am the miser lol
Still a good product!
Would the Earthwise have been able to do the leaves like on your first test a week or two ago or would it have just not worked? Meaning the opening on the top being to small. The trash holding compartment is a hand over fist "a plus" because 1/1,000th the final clean up.
Leaves contain pectin, and on railroad tracks this pectin acts as a lubricant. I would check with the manufacturer whether a consumer-grade chipper is meant to handle leaves in quantity. I would suspect that it might gum up the wood chipper like it does train tracks.
No. Its soo slow too. Just doesnt break them down well.
Can you burn the brush and then add the ash back into the beds / lawn?
You need a small wood burner outdoor fire pit for the late fall nights to stay warm
Love this idea! Good old bio char
Go Ginja, go Ginja, go!
LOL YES!
hi man, nice video, than you, one question, I need to chip straw, do you think one of those would work fine ?
probably not. the straw would have to be ulta dry and brittle. I'm not super confident.
Is it possible to also use the Earthwise or SunJoe 602 for leaf mulching? I would ideally like the machine I will buy to be able to handle both branches and leaves on their own. But maybe that's an unrealistic ask from one single machine?
it wouldn't work well in my opinion. I would get a leaf mulcher instead. The holes in these machines are so small that many times i had to clip the sub branches off and the leaves wouldn't pass if they were too bulky.
I have a question,
I can get bulk shredded mulch from my city, but it's a little on the large size, which would chop already mulched stuff even finer ? The 603 ? Thanks, John
well.... depends on how chuncky you're talking about. it does well when the materials are between 1" and .5" in diameter. it's possible you'd get some results but what I'm afraid of is if the machines would plug up. They tend to plug with matted materials. they don't do well with leaves either.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! i loved the video... as for the sun jo's... i think they come with different settings :/ so that one that kept doing the big chunks was doing it's job on the right setting :/
Man... hope I didnt miss something. I couldn't find anything to adjust the shred. The other lever adjust the set setting that titens the shredding gears as they wear down
@@pestandlawnginja it's all good that was a great review... I think though their should be a setting because or else that is a downgrade.. its socks balls.
My sentiments exactly
