I'm an old geezer who remembers Gelber's glory days. He was quite well known from the mid-1960's thru the mid-1990's. Less so since. Underrated only by those not familiar with him or too young to remember him. Now in his 80's, he performs very rarely. The slight limp is from a childhood bout with polio. Quite a few of his recordings can be found on RUclips and are well worth a listen. Splendid with many composers, his Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms are particularly outstanding.
A first class pianist, serious in reading and approaching the works he performs, technically solvent and capable of a clarity of phrasing and intention that few of his colleagues are capable of exhibiting. It is a mystery why he did not reach a greater impact and a true injustice that few today remember him in amazement by the cuteness of a Lang Lang and so many other piano athletes. The execution of this (difficult) concert is of near optimal quality. My greetings and congratulations to the teacher Bruno Gelber.

Conocí este concierto después de ver la película "Shine", biopic cuyo protagonista, es David Helfgott, especialista en este concierto y afectado por un trastorno maniaco-depresivo. Es una película que siempre he recomendado ver a mis alumnos de medicina y médicos residentes. La versión de Bruno Gelber me parece que esta llena de sensibilidad, sentimientos y energía. Siento no haber podido escucharle en una sala de conciertos en directo, pero esta videograbación nos otorga este privilegio. A Bruno Gelber le conocí por Laila Guerriero y su biografía: "Opus Gelber" , que estoy leyendo, me animó a ver su Concierto para piano 1 op. 15 de Brahms y esta obra que comento. Gracias a uno de los mejores pianistas del mundo. Me ha impresionado.
Sín palabras, música en estado puro, excelente musicalidad, nunca dejándose llevar por la facilidad técnica ni por la magnitud de la obra. "Solamente" haciendo música. Sín duda una de las mejores versiones del Re menor que jamás he escuchado. Tuve la suerte de conocerle en Santorcaz, cuando yo era joven en 1996 en casa de Rafa Marzo. Un abrazo maestro.
what the hell, I thought I'd already heard all the good renditions of this concerto (horowitz, sergeis own, argerich, sokolov) and then I get slapped in the face with the best f cadenza and overall phrasing, the most masterful layering and chord balance, and someone who doesn't throw braindead rubato at everything like their metronome is broken; sublime.
You're so right! I just came across this myself. Literally an hour ago. And I'm blown away, for just the reasons you describe. Man, can this guy create a huge sound! BTW, may I recommend to your attention the 1940 recording with Gieseking and the Concertgebouw conducted by Mengelberg? It might make a worthy addition to your excellent list.

Gelber had ice cold piano sound for Rach concerto no 3! Hype student Yunchan Lim played colorless dry cold piano sound Rach concerto no 3 in the Cliburn Finals! Dimitri Bashkirov her teacher Anastasia Virsaladze teach saying to Bashkirov the most important lesson is the love of beautiful colorful piano sound! This was already in 1930s! Really Shocking!!

Passion and tenderness from the start. Very beautiful. The tiny rubato he sometimes uses before the climax of phrase is very emotional, and individual. Some very fine orchestra phrasing during the first movement. Tonal shadings that match the pianist note for note. Ah, the original cadenza...personally my favorite, as it seems to fit the movement...and offers the pianist some room for expression...without the bombast. Of course, YMMV. Wonderful 1st movement.
Gelber’s combination of extremes is simply magical. Everything is there: poetry, sadness, joy, virtuosity, fire…just one quibble: why has he decided to play a version with some (tiny) cuts, when the canon of the last decades has already been to recreate the original score?

Creo que esta es la primera vez que doy mi opinión sobre el Maestro Gelber. Hay dos clasificaciones: Ser un gran pianista o ser una gran maestro. Bruno Gelber: Maestro de maestros. Con Sviatoslav Richter me pasa algo parecido. No se puede decir más...

I didn't expect this to be so good (No one talks about his Rach 3). those scale runs in the first movement cadenza is so satisfying.
