OMG you saved my life. I had no idea how to get this damn drive to work the way I wanted it to work. I'm not a techie but I needed to back up my files.

@@Insideruins The GUID Partition Map should be a drop-down selection under the ExFAT drop-down from what I remember since I do not have my laptop on me at this time. I believe there’s only two drop-down selections at that point
@@rian3k521I am unfortunately still not at my laptop since I always happen to be at work for some reason lol. However on that screen at 4:41, there are two drop-down selections (Format and Scheme). @steve0597 First thing you need to do is to choose "Show all devices" in View options on the top panel of Disk Utility window. Then your external drive will split into a folder and subfolder. So choose the first folder and press Erase as shown on the video. But first choose Scheme: GUID Partition Map so that you can see APFS among Formats.
Great video but I’m having a problem….when I connect the ssd on my MacBook Pro M1 it’s saying the disk I attached was not readable by this computer. Then it gives me three options… eject, ignore or initialize. What should I do? I did just purchase it from Best Buy. Hopefully you can help. Thank you and great video.
Thanks for this, I should have watched those before I partitioned my T7 Shield. Question since we erased the SSD, is there a way to password protect the Samsung T7 Shield?
Thanks for the thorough in-depth video man - needed to format a new T7 I bought and I gotta use it between Windows/Mac. The partitioning thing is new to me - and I only have a 1TB - so not sure if it's worth it to partition it. Guess it depends on my needs. If you partition - could I move files within the SSD between the different partitions?? (i.e. similar partition to yours, could I move from Windows Back Up Time Machine?
Thank you! That was a clean, beautiful how-to guide for setting up an external drive. And I've been around this stuff for a long time. You answered my burning question right up front: What do I do with those free Samsung brand-specific install files, esp if I want to make the drive accessible to both Mac and PC, so I can transfer files back and forth? And you covered that option nicely. I already have a Time Machine drive, but thanks for that section of the video, since that was done automatically when I hooked that drive up to the Mac & I really had no idea how it formatted it. Good job!
I have had a horrible experience with Sansung T7 if you leave them w/o using for a few weeks/months. The write speed goes to near zero, below 2 MB/s. I has this problem with ALL my T7 shield, WRITE speed BELOW 2 MB/s, and the speed does NOT improve with time. However, the READ speed is OK. I bought all of my T7 at different times, and from different stores. This is terrible, how can a SSD have this flaw? Is there anything that can be done ? Thanks in advance.
Hey man ran across this video . I’m about to purchase a t7 shield for myself and mom. I recently bought my mom her first iMac and she’s transitioning from pc to Mac. (I’m also new to the iOS world. Limited knowledge) should I keep the t7 on eXfat till all files are off of the pc and into the Mac and then switching to APFS or will switching from eXfat to APFS delete or mess up the files on the ssd?
Very helpful--many thanks! Question--I intend to use the T7 for Time Machine and Lightroom Classic storage. Should I partition and reserve a space for Time Machine and then have the rest for photos? I'm just getting started so I have about 10 Time Machine copies on the drive which I will delete and start over after watching your video.
Confusing because you switch to hard drive halfway through the video and I'm left confused about my SSD and if I should be doing any of this? Including the time machine since you didn't recommend partitioning SSD. So, if we have a SSD, less than half your video is relevant?
Thank you soooo much! I wished I had watched your video before installing the program. Now, I have to see how to delete it. I'm new with the Macbook lol
Hi what's wrong with the program? Why do you not want it on the drive? Just bought the drive and was looking for a video of how to install it and came across this video.
Btw, do you know happen to know what the best memory card or process is to get high-quality, long form video shoots out of a Sony A7S III? I plug it into the wall and use a 160G Sony Tough card but only get 34 min shoot time before I have to stop shooting, transfer files, and then go back to shooting, which kills the vibe and rhythm :(
I want to use Time Machine but my Disk Utility doesn't show the fiel Scheme, so I cannot chose 'GUID Partition Map", hence I cannot partition the Samsung T7

As far as I know there is currently no other way to enable hardware encryption on the Mac without using the Samsung program. If you use software encryption like encrypted APFS then performance takes a 40% hit.
Does somebody know if i can use the T7 also for saving my music and photos? because i am just able to put backups on it. if somebody know please let me know.

Quick tip: GUID Partition Map must be selected before APFS will show as an option.
But when i click "Erase", Disk Utility only shows two fields: Name and Format. It doesn't show "Scheme".

A couple complications that came up for me: I needed to change to the GUID partition thing prior to being able to see APFS as an option.

How do partitions compare to volumes ?
Should you have two separate Time Machine backups for two different macs or one should suffice for both
better to have 2 separate yes
I noticed you're not replying to comments regarding 256 bit aes encryption and password protection which comes only with Samsung software. Why so?
