Yes, but you can install the OS on the external drive and use it instead of the internal. If you get a nice fast Thunderbolt external then you won't notice much of a speed difference.
I have an external drive m.2 2tb crucial t500 inside a NewQ Maintenance-Free 40Gbps USB4 enclosure and I’m getting 3k read write and use it to boot off of. I can bring my drive anywhere and have my life with me and run it on any apple silicon machine. It’s a beautiful thing
Have a look at the portable 4TB Orico R3700 I bought one yesterday. Up to 3700 speed on Macbook Pro max, pretty damn awesome. Build in fan and it just works.
Is t7 shield better than t7? I need to safety copy the files on my old macbook air 2017. Its has 120 GB storage and I want to upgrade to a new version of macOs. Can I use t7/t7 shield to store files, photos and videos from both my macbook air and samsung s9+ Phone? Or do I need to format it before switching devices?
I prefer the Shield as it is a bit shock resistant than the regular version. As for the file system, you can format as you like. You’ll probably need to use ExFat to be able to read on both Windows and Mac/iOS
If there isn't much difference in the price, which one should I buy? Right now, the T7 1TB (Beige) is priced at Rs.11,199 ($133), and the T9 1TB is priced at Rs.11,599 ($138). I'll only use it to store some photos and videos, so 1TB is enough for my use.
Using a 2013 i7 MBP Retina for Pro Tools. Is it worth trying to connect a T7 off the Mac Thunderbolt port to the T7 USB-C port? The MBP is USB 3.0, and I'm told the Mac Thunderbolt ports won't power a USB drive and you need a powered Thunderbolt dock etc? My sessions are probably 40 tracks max with a medium amount of plugins and VI's. I guess my question is, will the USB 3.0 to T7 USB-C connection be fast enough for recording/editing audio? Thanks!
The T7 will probably work fine for you. The speed over usb 3 is probably more than ok for audio recording/editing. And you don’t need a dock to power the SSD, the usb port on the computer provides enough power.
@@MarinaTech Thanks! I think a 2 TB would be great for my setup. Do I need to partition the SSD so I have sessions and plugins/virtual instruments separated? On my current MBP, I have a 500gb SSD and everything is on one partition, working fine.
Hey Marina, is it possible to turn this samsung t7 as the main storage? so probably to install the macos sierra into that ssd and run everything inside the t7. My mac mini m2 storage is already full of capacity, So I was expecting to move the library folders into the SSD if it's possible. Thanks
Yes you can! It’s not a super easy process, you will definitely have to know what you’re doing, but it’s doable. However, I would suggest you first try to move your folders to the SSD, and not the entire OS. Your internal SSD is probably much faster and reliable than any USB attached device.

Marina i purchased a 2tb T7 plugged into windows down loaded software transfered photos Then plugged T7 in ipad pro and although it sees it i cant see any mac os or any of my photos. Can you swap between windows and Apple or not with this ssd? Anyone?
@@MarinaTech Thanks for your reply unfortunately I am completely i.t.iliterate I thought formatting it would remove all the files on the T7...also how do I do what you said🫣🫣sorry
I'd agree if the storage options didn't affect the life span of the Mac. Unfortunately the lower storage options have fewer read write operations.
What do you mean? Storage affects the life span of a Mac?
This only applies going from the 256 to 512 I believe. @@nala8631

I’m looking at doing this for the base m4 Mac mini. Do you have any trouble using apple AI?
@@keenobservations3050 thank you very much. I heard that as well but apparently someone put a workaround on GitHub. 🤷🏻♂️
@@keenobservations3050 yes indeed. Odd it works on the m3 mbp but not the m4 Mini 🤷🏻♂️
Bought an iMac and spent the money for it on the RAM instead and added 2 of the T9s (quasi RAID) style and it works so well and no fear of data loss.
I've used external SSDs with my Macs for years, for storage and for Time Machine.
what brands do you use

If you are backing up a few apple devices to the Macbook, the 512GB capacity would be an issue?
Great video. I have the C7 and it works extremely well with my MacBook Air 2.

Hey Marina, why not the Crucial X9 pro which is smaller, cheaper, and has a longer warranty (5 years vs. 3 years)?
Samsung lasts longer
Nice channel. Love the Tech Cat. 🙂
Purchased Sandisk 1 TB.

No better way to improve my English watching you. As a plus getting some tech tips 🇧🇷 😅
I bought my own TB4 external enclosure and SSD. It was cheaper and faster.
Samsung's overpriced. A 1TB SSD the size of a credit card cost me $75 CAD from Amazon.
Really enjoy your MB Air video. Keep it up.
Vamoooooo🎉
Only 3 years warranty 🤪😂🤣💯👎👎👎
