I have owned the 991a. I always got good audio reports. Nice having HF, VHF and UHF in one box. The radio does have some quirks, but once you get used to it there are no problems. I would definitely buy one again. Not to mention it also has C4FM as well.
Really the main deciding factor is whether or not you want 2m and 440 or not. Personally I prefer a separate radio for 2m and 440. I owned a 991A for a few months and sold it and bought an Icom 7300.
Thanks for the detailed comparison. This was very helpful. So much so that you helped me make my decision to buy my first HF radio, the 710. Thank you. K0WJF, USA
What makes the FT991A so great on 2m/70cm is that it does those bands in SSB/AM/FM/C4FM modes. I think this is overlooked by most reviewers. 2m SSB is fantastic fun, and having the capability to play with 2m tropospheric ducting adds another dimension to this radio you simply can not achieve by adding a typical FM 2m/70cm mobile to an FT-710 station.
Getting to grips with my FT710 have had some good contacts already been very impressed so far have added a 24”dvi d monitor to enhance the experience in my tiny shack. My Ft818nd is feeling left out as is the Ftm400 73s M7CVK
The lack of an external monitor really hurts the 991A. I think I'm getting the 710 and then a separate UHF unit down the line. Perhaps the FTM-200 or 300.
i worked with yaesu ft 991 , on hf bands is quite good but on vhf and uhf it did not hear well as dedicated radio for vhf and uhf. all in one its a compromise. there is no comparison with yaesu ft 710, yaesu ft 710 has much better screen, high resolutions, sdr spectrom scope in real time (yaesu ft 991 its delayed)
Hi. Have you had a chance to operate on the FT-891? Can you compare 710 to 891 from receiver's perspective. I have the 891 and it works great, but will I get a much better receiver with the 710? I'll get a better UI, waterfall and other goodies, but would I make more QSOs with the same antenna setup? 73!
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones OK thanks. You just confirmed a universal truth: "buy the most expensive antenna you can afford then buy a radio with what's left" 73!
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones yes, but that certainly wouldn't exclude its use for this purpose, they dont NEED to send audio through it for it to show video, don't you agree?.... Also, how would you rate the DNR on the 991A ? do you think it compares favorably to the 710 or ft-dx10
I think I'm sending my dx10 back for a 991a I really should have taken the all mode. Now I need to get a 2m 440 base to add to it not sure what I was thinking but dx10 is too much going on and it's all gizmo stuff that would be better off investing into the antenna. Convince me to keep the dx10.
As a 991a owner I’ve been considering something like the 710 as potentially being a better dx rig as dx is my primary interest. Is the 710 remarkably better for dx than the 991a in your opinion? Are there any stand out features of the 710 that will make dx’ing better than the 991a can offer? I’m a headset user anyway so audio from the rigs speaker may not be particularly important. Many thanks
Hi, I heard that 991A can operate in digital mode on HF. Is it possible for you to make some QSOs on HF in C4FM and SSB for comparison? Do you think using digital modes on HF is useful at all? Do you think it will be a thing in the future? 73 from Poland!
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones C4FM on HF is the only why I may consider 991A. All modes all bands allows you to mix modes and bands but you need to find someone with the same options on the other end to make QSO :)
I think the traditional band scope is so much better than the 3D scope. I find the 3D strictly cosmetic and totally useless. The 710 looks like a great radio. So far, I'm sticking with my 991A. Barry, KU3X

Agree its a winner .
Yes it's hard to decide with so many incredible radios they have today good vids👍
Yes I kept the 991 for its all mode/band and c4fm
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones It's a great back up rig amazing how much this little guy does and does it well . A lot of Bang.

The 991 does have monitor.
Two amazing transceivers Andy 👌
Yes love them both
Loving both but now leaning towards the 991 to cover 2M & 70cm. Thanks for the great videos Andreas.

I wonder why they didn't just use an HDMI port instead of the current choice for the external monitor
HDMI includes audio.

HDMI requires license fees while DVI does not. Maybe that´s the reason.
@@C4H6As Ah, Follow the money....now that makes sense!
So maybe I should keep my ftm 500 for my home base vhf/uhf and get a Ft710 it seems to have some newer features!
Yes
So the buttons not light up on the 710

The 710 is a better choice for HF
Nice review!! Which one is better for digital operation?
Hi the 991a has C4FM ,v/uhf the 710 is a dedicated HF Radio.
just noticed the 710 seems to handle the noise floor better than the 991a
Yes it's good
I use the FT-710 and the FTM-300D cause i want Not only One Tranceiver for HF UHF and VHF.
Perfect
Thank you, this was really helpful. Definitely settled on the 991a, just wondering when they will update it to the new form factor.
Agree i think they will also a icom 705 type qrp Radio
How is the reception vs the new sdrplay
710 is one of the best so is sdr play.
Do all the buttons Light on the 710
I think no
Just curious, does the 710 have the c4fm
No it aslo needs to have u/vhf to do c4fm
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones right. Forgot that.
991 is an all-in one radio station, that's enough.
Yes
Prefer the averaged screen activity on the 991. Watching the frenetic 710 screen gives me a headache.
Fair enough
What radio is better when there is high qrm?
Both good check the sherwood report but I have a feeling the 710 will win but you lose all Band all mode .

Seems that FT-710 has much better audio quality. FT-991A sounds somewhat dull. Not enough video time to judge properly.
Both are excellent if u mainly use HF get 710 it's a bargain .
Maybe because FT710 is on the top of FT991A and block 991A's outlet of sound.
991 scope seems quite a lot slower than the 710
What is slower ?

Agree about the 3d scope I will be keeping my 991a .
Didn't you see how the 710 can be set to the 7300-style scope, starting at 4:30 on the video?
Love my 991A!
I do not like the 3d effect. prefer the regular waterfall.
Thanks for watching
Newbie here. Like, really new...
This would be first big boy radio.
Which one of these to get?
I've narrowed policies between these two radios
If u want everything get the 991
ft991 has crfm also and 2 meter/440
ww8o
Yes big plus
