My first 100 watt radio (710) and I really love it. It's almost as easy to use as my 705. Yeasu could shock the world again if instead making another 10 watt QRP radio, they instead make it a G-90 killer, with 25 watts, internal tuner and 2m and 70 cm. That would set the Ham world on it's ear.
@@walteredwards544 Yes Walter. The most compact shack in a box ever. I still have mine in the truck. Needs a new display panel. As the dreaded Zebra lines have appeared.. With the optional 2.9 filter excellent on receive..
These Japanese Manufacturers absolutely need to include a 10:1 Tuner instead of the regular 3:1 they have been making for years. Out in the field most antennas are a compromise so you need a bigger match range.
Well that’s what everybody expected with the FT-818 but a more powerful output takes more power input something that a portable radio doesn’t want. It’s a trade off. I think the new Lithium Batteries are a fix for that. Yes even on CW it would be nice to increase power and especially beneficial on SSB. It was stupid not to have included 10 watts at a minimum on the 818.
I got the 10 for under 1300 from R&L several months ago and then the 101D for 2799 to the door from R&L this last Black Friday. Can’t beat em. Thanks for the great vids.
I upgraded from a 20-ish year old FT-840 to the FT-710 and love the new rig! Thanks for the videos Doug they have been a huge help setting up the FT-710!
Though not a holder of any sort of radio license, a customer abandoned a Yaesu FT-710 aess in my, "shop," The 3rd of March 2023. I have no equipment abandonment policy. Thus, I have been guarding the Yaesu Ft-710 aess since that night. I tested it and it operated flawlessly. The issue must have been on his antenna, or power supply. As much as I tried to contact the owner of the Yaesu, I could not do it. I stopped trying after three weeks. Come the third of January, I will be take the radio out of its original box and packing and make it mine. Perhaps I may sell it or aquire an amateur radio license. The problem is, I can not hold a conversation if my life depends on it. It may sell it. I am very curious about it. Thus, I will be experimenting with it before considering the possibility to sell it.
@@indridcold8433 The good thing about ham radio is that you don't have to make conversation. Much of the fun is just a quick exchange of call sign location and signal report. There are also plenty of other digital modes which do not require any conversation. Plenty of us introverts still enjoy amateur radio.
I had decided to get an FTDX10 a few weeks ago but was waiting for possible Memorial Day sale. After finding and watching some of Doug's playlist on FTDX10 I went to HRO as soon as they opened and bought their last one. Love this radio and Doug's playlist.
6 months from your video and the price is just what you had forecast, sitting at $1499. This information really helped me understand the nuances between the two. Will likely go with the FTDX-10.
I just picked up the FT-710, excellent deal from RandL electronics, received it from UPS on Friday.......and made 14 QSO contacts this past weekend. Being this is my first HF radio, I find that not having any experience with other comparable radios, I'm not biased or spoiled. I absolutely love this radio, the audio is clear and packed with ton of features. All that and running just a random wire end fed multiband antenna, I'll be working contacts with this as my primary base station HF radio.
I recently acquired a new FT-710 in a straight across swap for a Kenwood TS-590SG. I wasn't too impressed at first as I found many of the functions to be somewhat glitchy. However, after installing the latest firmware update (March 2023), it's actually a pretty decent radio now. CW keying is much smoother and digital noise reduction works noticeably better. In the meantime, I really missed my TS-590SG so I bought another one. The FT-710 is a very good transceiver but I still prefer the Kenwood for its well thought out ergonomics and solid, reliable performance. Lack of a waterfall display is no big deal for me because I operated without one for 38 years and that's what I'm used to.
Thanks for your post. I've had a TS-590 for about ten years and was being tempted by the eye candy, monitor and ability to plug in a mouse. Sometimes need a reminder that you can't beat Kenwood quality. I do have an SDR connected to it for pan adapter so really I do have all I need.
Sat down at HRO and played with the 710 for a good hour. Really like the radio, rcv audio was really pleasant and it wasn't to much of a chore to figure out how to use it and make everything the way I like to hear it. Think I am going to really work on the XYL and get one on the Xmas list.
Doug is a great guy and has provided very helpful videos on the Yaesu product line, helped when setting up my 991-A. Thanks to both of you for putting this together

Thanks for a good video and decision.

I did notice that, with a Heil Proset headset. you can't do something like you can with the IC-7300: you can't partially plug the headset in and be able the hear both on the headset AND the external speaker (which helps when I'm teaching a new ham about HF and/or acting as their CO, so I can hear the contact they're making while they have the headset on).
I use a pencil with eraser to hit buttons and touch screen. This is the recommendation to Industry using touch screens and helps with build up of skin oils on touch screens after long period of operation. this also helps to prevent "Fat Fingering" buttons (Unintentional hitting of multiple buttons) on Radio.
At $944 for the AESS model, I bought it because of the price. I WAS going to buy the FTDX10, but the 710 went on deep sale at HRO. Normally almost $1,300.
Is it me, or do older transceivers sound more 'natural' than SDR's? I get listener fatigue when I listen to SSB or CW on a current SDR receiver, whereas I can listen for hours upon hours on my old IC-756 or FT-990!
Reading many comments, the 10 has the better receiver. How important that is, I don't know? I cannot put my finger on it yet but despite everything I have read, I like the 710. People discuss price difference, but honestly once you have spent your money on the transceiver of choice, in two years time price will be forgotten and day to day performance will be your rule stick. Same with stereo speakers, once you spend your money, you have to live with the sound you bought. I bought expensive B and W speakers, awesome and glad I spent the money!! Thinking the same concept for radios.
Strange that you can’t customise the microphone button features on the FTDX10 or change the pop up screen time. Both features are available on the cheaper FT-710. I own one and love it.
HRO has the YAESU FT-710 AESS for 1,049.95. Their price for the FTDX-10 for 1,399.95. I find it interesting that the FT-710 is less. Makes one go hmmm. Great video. Thanks for the information. I think I will stick with my 991-A. It works great for POTA for me. Have a great Easter Weekend.
What is the next step up beyond Yaesu and Icoms Top of the line radios for a home station ???? I’m looking for a weak signal radio and receiver and antenna combo
I look at the FT-710 as the replacement for the FT-450D as the budget minded entry to HF. A hear a number of FT-450 users kept that rig for portable and go-box operation when they upgraded to the mid and high end Yaesu transceivers.
This didn’t really seem like a comparison between the two radios. It was too detailed and bogged down with deep dive features. I was hoping for a more surface level side by side comparison.
They're avoiding saying FTdx10 > FT710. They don't make it clear if Yaesu sponsored the video, but I'm thinking they did with the clearly stated avoidance of naming another radio brand.
We went to HRO to decide on either of these radios. After playing with both for an hour, we went home with the DX10. My opinion is that the DX10 is superior to the 710.
That 710 went up a couple hundred dollars since it came out. At 800 I think the 700 is probably a no brainer. I’ve got a 991a but I really want the ability to hook directly up to a monitor. For a couple hundred more I’d venture to say the 10 is a better radio, but both are getting really good reviews.
How about a modern: 1. HF MOBILE rig 2. 2m ALL MODE MOBILE And multiple antennae ports! Elecraft good about this. Kenwood has a receive port! Now the new Y dual band FM mobile looks like it has a body and dials for all mode 2m or HF..... And even in a home, not everybody has space for desktop rigs!
Before the video, I thought DNR was, "Do not resuscitate." I now know it means, "Dynamic noise reduction." I wish my automobile radio had a DNR button. I have been curious about SDR for awhile.
I wish one of the manufacturers would release something like a more modern IC-718. I'd rather have a smaller screen and more buttons. I dislike menu driven devices (that goes for cameras and cars also). For a bigger screen a thunderbolt or hdmi output would be great. And under 1000$ if possible 😅
I feel like that sometimes. I have the 7300 and I generally like it but I had an IC-718 and it was just so simple to operate and yet I could still do the digital stuff If I wanted to. Lately I drove myself BONKERS trying to get like 3 s/w packages to talk to each other and started day dreaming about the 718. I like that idea though of having a 718 like panel with band scope out on connector.
This is just funny in my mind, but I was at Dayton last year, and went to the ICOM section where all the radio's were hanging out. Keep in mind, there were crowds of people EVERYWHERE...Over 2 days I never saw anyone in front of the 7300. I thought to myself, no big mystery here... I'm probably not exaggerating when I say half the hams own one! So, nothing to see. It was just funny to me because of just how many people were floating around rubbing elbows, and no one in front of the 7300 ;) Cheers
It's not just crowding of the buttons it's the fact they had a chance to jump out in front of competitors with back lit lights, like they did on the 991A?? It is a great radio but they could have made it super and they failed.
@@HamRadio2 Very good. I am writing my license in a few weeks and will be setting up the first shack this summer. Looking forward to all the choices available. Thanks for the videos.
It is for sure larger. IDK if it was brighter, I didn't compare them. "better" is subjective. It's the same screen with the same functions, just different sizes
The only problem about the sdr Rtx was when u have a ham Radio Station too close... In that's case Is Better a old ft1000 but like Reciver descrimination and regulation of modulation and noise equalizer the new series ft 710, ftdx10 and ft101d are absolutely Amazing
I would Kenwood to come out with a competitive version to the FT-891, give is a bigger color detachable head, blue tooth head unit and blue tooth mic (so no wires) and a built in tuner. Make it 125 watts
I went with the FT710, couldn’t be happier. It’s a nice radio and has lots of nice features. If you have the money, sure get the DX10. But I am happy with the money spent on 710.
I you tube review by an operator says that the ft 10 display is brighter sharper than the 710, we know is a fraction larger but is this man correct saying its better on the f10?
It will be necessary to make a replacement for the 991A with the FTDX-10 as an HF part and a more advanced satellite function to compete with the IC-9700 and the latest Fusion functions present on mobiles.
@@HamRadio2 correct my question is should I keep my ftm500 as a vhf/uhf base and get a Ft710.. Or get rid of thr 500 and get a all in one ft 991a I personally am leaning to the 710
@@HamRadio2 really stuck here I like my ftm 500 I could always use it as mobile but I use dmr as mobile.. And I just got it I need to get thr 710 don't I?
I was between the 7300 and the ftdx10, the ftdx10 won because I liked the controls a bit better and it has a built-in soundcard. Both are great. My biggest gripe is the short menu display.
I enjoyed the video. I’ll be in the market for a new rig in the near future. I wonder if they’ll come up with a firmware update for the DX10 to clear up some of the complaints on the radio.
I've not heard any complaints on this radio, other than the menus which are just common to Yaesu (although the FTDX-10 is better than others) But I am sure they will keep up with firmware as long as the radio is in production.
I wished that Yaesu made some durable All Mode 2/70 base tranceivers with N connectors. And some new mobile 2/70 sets with 9k6 data port for ax25 use. Im not into the tv screen radio's with tft. I will be keeping my old Kenwoods. For SDR is use a RSPduo. For POTA the TS-480SAT.
I would like a 705 competitor. At the same time it very well could be more money. I'm at the point where I don't have a radio that I would consider selling, it's a possibility. I'm looking at having dedicated hf and UHF/VHF radios for the shack, the truck and SOTA. That's a bit of money there. I will give one of my baofengs to a new ham, but thats about it.

I'm probably not exaggerating when I say half the hams own one! So, nothing to see. It was just funny to me because of just how many people were floating around rubbing elbows, and no one in front of the 7300 ;) Cheers
Does the Yaesu FT-710 AESS have a swr scan ?
That's the big feature missing on the DX10. Funny (and kinda sad) that I have to use my Xiegu G90 to do a SWR scan.
Is the digital noise reduction on the 710 better than the dx10?
I don't think it is
@@HamRadio2 I was looking at buying the 710 but now am leaning heavy towards the dx10.
It's not just crowding of the buttons it's the fact they had a chance to jump out in front of competitors with back lit lights, like they did on the 991A?? It is a great radio but they could have made it super and they failed.
Your “Kenwood is coming back” comment caught my ear. Do I keep my fingers crossed for an announcement at Hamvention?
Well they just released a new HT, and they had a booth at Hamcation. I don't have any knowledge of other new radios, but they are back...
@@HamRadio2 Very good. I am writing my license in a few weeks and will be setting up the first shack this summer. Looking forward to all the choices available. Thanks for the videos.
Definitely need a 705 competitor.
Yep
In a review of both on you tube 1 man says the Display is brighter sharper on the 10 its a fraction larger but its it true that is also better?
It is for sure larger. IDK if it was brighter, I didn't compare them. "better" is subjective. It's the same screen with the same functions, just different sizes
The only problem about the sdr Rtx was when u have a ham Radio Station too close... In that's case Is Better a old ft1000 but like Reciver descrimination and regulation of modulation and noise equalizer the new series ft 710, ftdx10 and ft101d are absolutely Amazing
Brill video guys, thanks
Ok I’m setting the ft-710. Do you have a discount code?
No, just the Yaesu sale that's ongoing
I would Kenwood to come out with a competitive version to the FT-891, give is a bigger color detachable head, blue tooth head unit and blue tooth mic (so no wires) and a built in tuner. Make it 125 watts
HRO has discount (with rebate) on the FTdx10 for $1199. Is it worth saving to grab that versus the FT710 priced at $899 right now…?
What did you decide to do? I’m in the same situation?
I went with the FT710, couldn’t be happier. It’s a nice radio and has lots of nice features. If you have the money, sure get the DX10. But I am happy with the money spent on 710.
Thank you!
I have a DX10 for my base station, and a 710 fir POTA
Do you prefer one over the other, or are they just different tools for a different job?
@@lmcalhoun Different tools for different jobs.
would be nice if the sp40 was an option. I use my 710 for POTA with a headset.
Yeah
i played with both at hro for hours and went with the 710. just felt easier to use with my big hands.
I you tube review by an operator says that the ft 10 display is brighter sharper than the 710, we know is a fraction larger but is this man correct saying its better on the f10?
Doug, I am selling my 5000mp and FTdx10, I only use my last ONE OF Yaesu FT-450D which with Bhi in Line, Still feels good. 🤣🤣🤣
It will be necessary to make a replacement for the 991A with the FTDX-10 as an HF part and a more advanced satellite function to compete with the IC-9700 and the latest Fusion functions present on mobiles.
It'd be nice to have a real replacement for the 857 also
@@HamRadio2 and 817/818 😉
Very good information.
Dear,
The ft-710 comes for to fight the ic-7300
Thats all.
All the best

Price difference between the 2 radios is significantly more that $100 to $150 in Australia.
So maybe I should keep my ftm 500 for my home base vhf/uhf and get a Ft710 it seems to have some newer features! What ya think?
Those 2 radios don't cover the same bands so they don't relate to one another
@@HamRadio2 yeah? I'm trying to relate a 710 to a 991a.. You have a video for that I need some insight
Yes those 2 are HF radios. The FTM500 is not
@@HamRadio2 correct my question is should I keep my ftm500 as a vhf/uhf base and get a Ft710.. Or get rid of thr 500 and get a all in one ft 991a I personally am leaning to the 710
@@HamRadio2 really stuck here I like my ftm 500 I could always use it as mobile but I use dmr as mobile.. And I just got it I need to get thr 710 don't I?
I enjoyed that buddy…have a Subscribe from the UK👍
Welcome aboard!
I was between the 7300 and the ftdx10, the ftdx10 won because I liked the controls a bit better and it has a built-in soundcard. Both are great. My biggest gripe is the short menu display.
Why in hell did Yaesu not make the matching speaker the same height as the radio?
Aesthetically, the matching speaker looks odd and misplaced.
It's the same height.
Good video but the music bed is annoying as heck.
It’s now officially settled- - - It’s “YAY-Soo”, not “YAY-ZOO”. Thank you, N4HNH.
I just want to know when the FTM500 is coming out LOL...
Me too, lol
For real! Been waiting for a hot minute
That music though! at 42 mins it started to grind me.
Hey bud, we need to get you a nice a yealink T54W
710, 70% the size of a DX10 or 5 better than the 705 😅
the best for me ??? The one I puchased !!!!
991A
FTDX 10 RULES!
2 good hams right there.
Those are good radios but i dont have money to bought it 😅😂🤣😂🤣
yaesu has to come back to market with an under 1000$ hf transceiver
This model has been quite popular
This week you can find the FT710 all over for $899.00 - HRO, Giga, R&L
The filters on all computer radios are just NOT as good as a physical Crystal Filter.
That’s why I’m considering upgrading to the 101.
Apparently radios are like guns. Have you ever sold a gun/radio that you regretted later? Almost every one.
Yep
