You will love it. The only issue I have with it, is the top mounted buttons, but you'll learn to live with it as there aren't many. For shack use, get yourself a DVI to HDMI cable and a dedicated monitor for the video output. Now you got a giant waterfall!😃
All I can say about the 710 is this... In the UK, Martin from MLS uses a 710, Peter from Walter Stantons uses a 710... Stop and think, these guys have both used almost all radios and owned shops selling them for half a century. Yet when they tried to 710 they kept it for themselves. It has a ton of bonuses, but the small footprint for such a capable radio is top of the list.
Great video, as usual. I love my FT-710. It's a great radio for not only in the shack, but portable like POTA. I like it so much I just purchased the FTDX-10 and will be taking it portable for my first spring POTA activation. For the 710, I have used two each 20 ah LiFePO4 batteries in parallel. After four hours of continuous POTA calling CQ at 80 watts out, I only used 18 ah of battery capacity. Get the FH-2 remote keypad off of ebay for only $48 and use the DVR in the radio to send CQ, It's a very helpful addon for a POTA activation. Barry,, KU3X
Great radio, I put over 40 POTA operations on my FT710 AESS this past summer. Running 80 watts on a 20 amp/hr LiFePO4 battery with no issues for 200 plus contacts on a weekend. I really enjoy using the waterfall as well as the fantastic audio. 73 VE9NHS
Great points. Its my only radio now. QTH and portable. im getting 1A on receive. Maybe turn down brightness/contrast , scope speed. Turn off DSP. Im looking at picking up a FT-891 for portable/ mobile operation. Thanks again. KM4AT 73
I use the FT710 Field as a portable all the time, but it's definitely a bit of a luggable at 10lbs. I rotate that with the Xiegu G90. The 710 is a fantastic receiver and of course has 100W is great to have; The G90 is only 20W and not as agile a receiver, but has that amazing antenna tuner. I wish I could marry the two in a single radio, somehow, but until then, I will pick the right one for a given trip and generally be pretty darned happy! I've been running on a 20Ah battery for everything for a while, but the price for 100Ah is coming down so rapidly that I definitely see myself going for one soon.
I upgraded from a Xiegu G90 to an FT-710 and it has been amazing so far. I primarily used both the G90 and now the 710 portable as I live in an apartment, and not only is the extra power nice, but I've also found that the 710 has WAY better noise rejection on RX.
Hi Tracy, thank you for the interesting video. I'm using the FT 710 Field since one year for POTA Activations and it never let me down. For powering my 710 I'm using also a 100 Ah LiFePO 4 .So there is plenty of Power available. For my Home QTH there is an FT 710 AESS working.. 73s
Really thanks for your excellent videos Tracy, I cannot afford another radio, but I always enjoy how well put together your videos are and how much work you put into them. I really hope in 2025 I can make a POTA contact with you ! 2E0FWE :)
My first HF Radio. I bought it last year because I wanted the latest, affordable and at least semi-portable rig that could be used both as a shack radio and something I could put in a hardcase for road/air travel and it fits the bill perfectly. You'll struggle to put this in a Manpack, but I don't climb hills and mountains, so that's not an issue. Perfect for what you're doing, POTA/Camping etc. Got a 100Ah battery for $300AUD of Amazon at the same time and have no regrets. Solid unit with hightly customisable settings. The inbuilt tuner makes it a dream to work with your preferred antenna. 👍
Great video, Tracy, thank you! Yaesu do make some wonderful radios. I've fallen so hard for my DX10 that I'm no longer using my 891, except for the occasional SOTA hike. I realise my DX10 is not particularly portable, but you're making me want to try it anyway. Especially being that 100Ah batteries are becoming less expensive. I'll have to put in an order with Father Christmas. Cheers!
Trancy, you made a very good choice. I had the opportunity to test this radio a few months ago from a friend. I was doubting between the FTDX-10 and the FT--710. Ergonomicly speaking I prefer the 710 where the knob layout is more natural and the FTDX-10 is pretty crouded around the VFO knob and sec. ring. I still went for the DX-10 as I wanted the 300 Hz roofing filter for CW and RTTY and the filtering and digital noise reduction are second to none on this radio. But I was very impressed with the receiver performance on the 710 as with his sounding audio on air. It is by far the smallest and fully packed SDR radio at lower weight and compact size. And the bonus is a very nice screen wiht waterfall and signal bars capable of 100 Watts if you need it to be but reducing it as lows as QRP. The only disadvantage in my opinion will be the power consumption compared agaisnt real QRP radios. Cheers 73, Phil ON4VP (PS, I'm awaiting the FTX-1F next spring as it will be a real two simultanious band receiver radio ideal for satellite use)
I've had an FTdx-10 in the shack for a while and used a Yaesu FT-891 for portable. I didn't use the 891 enough to remember the menus so I sold it and bought an FT-710 for my portable radio. I have not been disappointed at all. Controls are very similar to the FTdx-10 which makes it much easier for me plus there is the superb receive on the 710. I expect you will really enjoy it. As far as weight, after packing the 891, a tuner, and digirig and cables for doing ft8 the weight would be about the same. I do most portable work from the tailgate of my truck so truthfully weight is not a concern. 73
I love the FT-710 and I had the 991a and so miss it on some of my activations. The 710 is the best bang for the buck IMHO, but if you are a Icom guy look at the 7300. Thanks Tracy
I purchased a FT-710 for the same reason, but the bonus was, with Yaesu Cashback, in the UK it was nearly £400 cheaper than a new IC-7300. I agree on the receiver, superb, so much so I sold my base rig, IC-7610, for a FTDX101D. I really liked my IC-7610 and would have kept it if it covered 4M, but certainly not dissapointed with it's replacement the FTDX101D. 73 Mike G1ZRN.
Icom needs to make a portable that has the built-in tuner, across all brands, SDR is going to carry the day. As far as temperature goes when the Russian qrp group had their "red nose" outdoor contest, when their ft-817 began to run erratically, they stuck it inside a winter boot, and that fixed the problem. So I wonder if your pelican case itself might be a solution to the cold problem. I'm kind of surprised that all these radios are not mil-speced a bit more. I know FARC and other type groups in the past have used the 817, of course that's in a pretty hot place. But it gets pretty cold in Ohio too, so something that can't run in the cold is a deal-breaker for me! 73 DE W8LV BILL (and sometimes W8LV/VE3)
Nice overview! The Yaesu 710 sure sounds great and is good radio, especially for the price. But for portable ops, I still think the Icom 7300 beats it. I just checked and was surprised to find the 7300 is rated down to 14°F, which was a pleasant surprise.
Thanks for the video I really appreciate it. Questions: 1. Does the fan run while just receiving? 2. Can you tell me the model number of your Pelcan case? I've been considering the FT-991A as I like to have 2 meters and 70cm, shack in a box. 73.
You're welcome! 1. Yes the fan does run while just receiving. 2. It's not a Pelican case, it's an Italian toolbox sold under the brand name MAXIMUM here in Canada at Canadian Tire stores. It's a good one!
Something else that is interesting about this radio, is it can do 4 Meters which is great for countries like UK that have the 70mhz band. I think you have to change it to UK region in the settings. No other HF+6M radio has 4M at this price point, even the 991A does not. The IC 7300 does, but its about 50% more expensive, as is the IC 7100. And then the FT-DX10 but that is even more expensive. All these radios are great by the way and 4M is really just a bonus VHF band. A bit like 6M but with smaller easier to build antennas... but less people due to scarcity.
Great rig you got, I use a FT-991A for POTA and works great. I’m thinking on upgrading for that radio. Tell me, what case is that that you have for your radio? I’m looking for one for my radio. 73’ from PR
Thanks for the great video! Quick question: Do you see any performance issues running the 12.8V LiTime battery vs the 13.8V batteries that seem to cost twice as much? I'm looking into my first HF radio and finding $100 for a 9Ah battery to be a little ridiculous.
I take it you picked up the Field version of the FT-710. According to the manual for the FT-991A it's operating temperature range is good down to -10C. Odd the 2 radios would have different operating temperature ranges.
Yes I did pick the Field version. I had no intention of taking an external speaker portable. The FT-991A is next on my list to act as a cold weather option, just sold off one of my other radios to make way for it.
