Very similar to me. I got cut all 4 years of high school, it was extremely tough but it just made me want it more. I ended up walking on a very good (top 10) D3 school. Don't give up!
Really resonated with this, got cut from the sports teams I tried really hard for back in high school. But used those lessons of failure and perseverance and applied them to other areas of my life which led to significant success. Keep working brother 🙌

This is probably the most inspiring thing that I've ever heard. In baseball, stuff like this is not expected, but actually very possible as a pitcher (literally just have nasty stuff, and it's projectable). But in basketball I imagine, you need to be in the top 60 of your graduating class (roughly) to even have a shot at the league, and the skills are much less objective. Congratulations! You really earned it

Then comes around 8th grade and I'm playing for that same league and the other kids on the team are all a lot better and experienced and I didn't get that much playing time. I felt horrible because everyone else talked down against my game and they were right. At this point I wasn't taking it very serious but I don't know what happened but something came alive inside and I really started to have a genuine love for the game. For my league we have two tournaments towards the end of the season and my cousin was over and I practiced so much and I was really getting better because my offense was horrible at this time and I couldn't shoot to save my life but I started making mid range shots in games and one of the defining moments was when I got put in for the last like 8 seconds of this one game and my friend tells me I'm bringing up the ball and when I got it I booked it and went through every defender and got the layup. We didn't win from that but I realized how good I could be and how much I wanted to improve and this summer I've worked so much at least an hour and a half to 2 and a half hours a day. I work on my handles shooting form and moves around the rim, and I've improved so much I went back and watched the videos of my team playing and played against those same people and I'm just as good if not better then all of them I'm not gonna stop working I'm not gonna give up no matter how discouraged I get. 🔥 I’m tryna play baseball d1 fer MD. ONLY 13, but I try to be myself and be humble. I don’t buy oakleys, don’t wear chains, don’t get expensive gloves, don’t wear sliding mitts, worn the same pair of pants since Little league, got a baseball bag everyone made fun of. I genuinely thought about quitting after I made a club team, because I had a bad tournament. My parents helped through it, and I tried to get better. Since then I have started for that club team, made the school team both years of my middle school journey, and in my second year rn I am currently the team captain and starting Catcher/3rd baseman. Fire vid. Thanks fer making it
I was a practice squad member in my sophomore year I barely made it, and I was barely good, I could dribble with only my left hand and I was a decent 3pt shooter, but I couldn't dribble with my right hand which made it all the harder. I wasn't struggling academically as a maintained a solid 4.1 gpa, so that was fine, and I only had to worry about skill. so I used that whole szn to level up my skills, and I worked my ass off, then came junior year, I became a lot better, I could learn to dribble with my right hand now, but even so, last year was a fluke that I made it in, so I didn't have high hopes for junior year, and to no suprise, I was right, I didn't make it, it made me upset, but it even motivated me and made me want to work harder, so I signed up for recreation and aau teams, I started to work out and put on muscle, I did basketball training regimens in order to be the best I am, so I did that the whole school year, and even when summer break started, I still pushed past my limits and worked even harder and longer since I no longer had school to worry about. And holy hell was it tough, there were times where I was like "shit, I should quit and forget it", but I didn't, and I just went at it. Now, I've became significantly better, I now built a better physical frame, I increased my durability and stamina, I added new bags to my movset, I improved on my handling as well as my defensive game, and my school starts tommorow. Now the tryouts don't begin till september, so I sitll have a whole month to train, but rn. I am proud of what I have done and I have high hopes that I will make the team.
I started playing basketball at like 14 and tryed out for the team in 7th and 8th grade and didn't make it, in my freshman year I moved to a private school and I didn't have to tryout, just sign up but later i got cut because of my grades and i moved back to public school, now in my sophomore year I've been putting in the work but i don't believe in what do but after i watched this it gave me motivation so thank you
Highschool coach doesn't let me play because I have huge curly hair, it sucks but I still play for fun. I hope one day I can show him that I can be the player he always needed but never had, but I guess we'll see! Love the story.
Thanks for sharing the story about ur basketball journey. I started basketball at 11, played in 8th grade and some aau leagues, then got cut from JV in 9th and 10th grade. I'm currently a sophomore in high school, playing on a competitive AAU 17U team. Do you think i can make it to a d2/d3 college level if I played AAU without school ball. Also loved your story so much, so inspirational!! From my story as well as your story, failure is a valuable source which teaches our minds how to be resillient, and eventually making it.
Thank you for your kind message! Im glad my journey could inspire you. I think it’s definitley achievable playing in college. Sounds like you’re playing already at a high level, so as long as you continue to play and improve, the opportunities are gonna come to you!
Sup Johnny. As you can see by my pfp I'm your traditional hockey player but I've since turned to basketball ever since grade 9. Your story resonates with me so much man and it's great to see a random underdog story pop up. I unfortunately had a similar path to you throughout my high school basketball career. Great spot up shooter, decent defender, decent handle and playmaking ability and great strong hand finish but just wasn't enough to convince the coaches. Lots of people said I got snubbed and I just went with it as I began to hear that most people started quitted the team and the team itself would lose by 30 each game💀. Obviously that helped my mental knowing that my difference had an impact and I began to do what you did. Get better at ball. Now (just finished my freshman year at university), I can confidently say I hold my own against the best of that high school team and even better than them depending on the teams during open runs simply because any nervousness and pressure is gone. Will definitely consider playing men's league moving forward while balancing my studies in kinesiology! Anyways, awesome video man! Love from Canada🍁
@@zacharylouie9761 that’s great! It’s a great feeling when you are able to compete and not reflect your abilities off of what your coach thinks. When that pressure is off you really see how far you’ve come and your talents. Hope your second year of university goes well! Good luck with your studies
@@johnnyperkins_ thanks man! Btw what else r u studying while hooping d1 and does that change the amount of classes u take? Just asking bc I don’t know if I want to fully commit to playing bball or hockey on the side bc ik studying and grades r important.
i got cut 7th and 8th grade year, after the last cut i realized if i really wanted this id have to work alot harder. so i did, that summer i worked my tail off and freshman tryouts i made the team. my coach told me he saw something in me because he saw me practicing for hours in 104 degree texas heat so he gave me a spot. next year i got cut, and now this year i made it again, this time on varsity. moral of story dont give up
Good for you!!! My son was similar. He made the team each year but rarely played. He was a top 3 guy but the coaches didn't "like" him and it was all so political. He began practicing with the local college team his sophomore year of high school and kept playing high school basketball. In the end, he played very little in high school but will be on scholarship this fall as a college freshman. College coach sees a lot of potential and cannot understand why he didn't play more in high school. Just gotta put the work in. Embrace the grind.
Congratulations! You've shown a lot of heart. Good luck in college. However, now that you are in college, you should learn the difference between an adjective and an adverb. You are a good basketball player and you play basketball well. You don't, however, play basketball good.
This story is tuff. I played in the NCBBA this past year at a school in Pennsylvania. I never played high school basketball either. Got cut every year. Also, the coach didn't like me. Good luck this next year.
I played ball my whole life and had all the same goals like any other young basketball player, got on varsity as a sophomore and the coach never played me all the way through senior year. Never got an opportunity and he broke my love for the game. To this day I swear it was personal and I’ll probably never get over it
D1 implies you played for the college team, but you played for the club team correct? Which is good, no doubt, but its not D1. Great story about sticking with it. HS team sports are tough since the coach has to balance being good every year so you have to blend players. Then the coach is going to pick guys who showed they can play at lower levels. There was a kid at our local HS was 6' tall who dominated HS games, he could elevate and get his shot off over anyone. I saw games where the other team had 10 really good players and he would dominate. When I watched him, I use to think, if there was anyone who was a sure thing, it was him. He got hurt, played prep and I don't know if he got picked up. Making it to D1 sports is almost impossible since you are competing with kids around the world now for scholarships. There's a movie titled 1000 to 1 and its about a really good HS player who went to play in college. Cool story.
I am currently in 8th grade and I have tryouts in January, I saw this and its motivating me, If I remember I will come back to this video if I make it.
im going inti eighth grade now and our lives up to this point have been parallel. hoping my story turns out like yours im practicing in the gym and going to trainings every day possible
Sometimes it's all about who you know. Everything happens for a reason. Think about it: you could've made those high school teams, only to be ignored by college scouts, who would deem you a One or Two Star prospect. Then you go to other leagues and outhustle the same players who got picked above you. If you have game film, connections, and keep playing, then you still belong. Your persistence will help you overcome a lot of obstacles.
Your moral of the story is never give up, I like that And that they push kids way too hard these days to do good in sports, so hard that they don’t grow (Julian Newman ie)…
6'1 sophomore putting up 18ppg in AAU wouldve been number 1 starter at my high school, sucks you probably went to a huge school but it seems like you made it either way
a bit misleading, you played regular college ball, not D1 or anything of the such, anyways great video and I hope this doesn't happen to me in my upcoming tryouts.
You got cut all throughout middle school and highschool and ended up making your club team in college. Good job i guess but don’t clickbait and say you went d1🤦♂️
Dude this happened to me with soccer in highschool 😂 never made the team but played on rec teams with all the varsity guys from both hughschools in my district and started over defenders from both schools never got taken out 😂 was the worst feeling ever tbh made me realize nothing in this world is about what you can do but who you know 😂
I feel you I'm 15. I'm still trying to get my first dunk my journey as a basketball player is pretty much the same issue I play for McEwen high school in Tennessee. I'm a freshman this year and it is really hard but l'm keeping at it. I'm so close to everything but can't grab it, and it seems like no matter how much work it doesn't work l've worked hard than everybody on my middle school team and I said the bench my eighth grade here, but I did make the high school team But I sent the bench On JV Even though I know I'm better than most of those guys I still sit the bench It's crazy. My dream is to play college basketball. I look up to you. Thank you so much. Keep doing what you're doing. You don't know how much You mean the world and God God has a plan for you. He loves you and he has a purpose for you. Trust him
Could you make a video on some of the workouts or drills you did because whenever I play basketball I feel like I’m not improving cuz I just shoot around and don’t know what to do
Absolutely. If you can, I would play pickup and play against people that are better or older than you, it'll help give you experience and apply to game situations
i was playing basketball from the age of 10 to 15 and got really good at it and was team captain the whole time. But i left basketball for 3 years and i am thinking of coming back this year (turning 18 in 2 months). My form is a lot better and my shot accuracy is better. What do you think about coming back? Is there still a chance for somewhat of a career? (From serbia btw)
In my town there was like a clique of parents/students with some of the sports, and basketball was one of them. A few players who were really good and better than some of the guys on the team wouldn’t make it. That made the club leagues more fun, but it was just odd how it wasn’t a meritocracy for a few particular sports including basketball.
I am nearly 70 years old, and I found this story awesome! I hope to see more!

@@gdshordy5008 this is great! I really hope it works out for you and you make the team 💪🙏

Well done … congrats.
An excellent lesson for life.

I started playing basketball at like 14 and tryed out for the team in 7th and 8th grade and didn't make it, in my freshman year I moved to a private school and I didn't have to tryout, just sign up but later i got cut because of my grades and i moved back to public school, now in my sophomore year I've been putting in the work but i don't believe in what do but after i watched this it gave me motivation so thank you
Inspirational man, thanks for sharing!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Highschool coach doesn't let me play because I have huge curly hair, it sucks but I still play for fun. I hope one day I can show him that I can be the player he always needed but never had, but I guess we'll see! Love the story.
Love the videos, Looking forward too seeing more videos from you man.
Thanks so much!
Bro don’t listen to all the hate, this story was amazing, keep going!
🐐🐐 goat, thank you!!
I coach hockey, and I often think the kids who will "make it", are the ones who stick it out. Most kids quit at some point. You didn't. Good for you!
Great story combined with great storytelling and great visuals, really enjoyed this 👍
Just asking bc I don’t know if I want to fully commit to playing bball or hockey on the side bc ik studying and grades r important.
this was very inspiring i have tryouts for an aau team in a few weeks and even if i dont make it that dosent mean i still cant play college
@@bookerwiththedagger27 you never know where it may lead you 🙏
Great video and storytelling. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
i got cut 7th and 8th grade year, after the last cut i realized if i really wanted this id have to work alot harder. so i did, that summer i worked my tail off and freshman tryouts i made the team. my coach told me he saw something in me because he saw me practicing for hours in 104 degree texas heat so he gave me a spot. next year i got cut, and now this year i made it again, this time on varsity. moral of story dont give up
Good for you!!!
Now thats a cool story too. Scholarship usually means D1, so you kid made a D1 team?
@@itsmeforsure5475, no, local junior college.
This is awesome! Very inspiring. Great content. Keep it up! 👏
Thanks so much! Will do!
Thanks! Good luck to you too
Thank you man, very inspiring 🙏
Love it. Way to go Johnny.
Thank you!
Man wish me luck as i believe in myself and aim and work for the best
I played ball my whole life and had all the same goals like any other young basketball player, got on varsity as a sophomore and the coach never played me all the way through senior year. Never got an opportunity and he broke my love for the game. To this day I swear it was personal and I’ll probably never get over it
Sorry to hear that, I hope you’re able to find that love for the game again!
Hey Johnny I’m going through the same thing i appreciate it you sharing your story I’m gonna play my game
@@wadsondesir8974 hey! good luck!
Great story, very inspiring
@@m3crystal good luck!!
im going inti eighth grade now and our lives up to this point have been parallel. hoping my story turns out like yours im practicing in the gym and going to trainings every day possible
@@jwclip good luck I hope it all goes well for you 🙏
Sometimes it's all about who you know.
Your moral of the story is never give up, I like that
And that they push kids way too hard these days to do good in sports, so hard that they don’t grow (Julian Newman ie)…
the movie rocky is incredible!

It all works out for a reason. Could’ve been a bad experience playing for school so maybe it was for the best 😄
Fire stuff bro. I play in the league too
a bit misleading, you played regular college ball, not D1 or anything of the such, anyways great video and I hope this doesn't happen to me in my upcoming tryouts.
Colleges have club teams in many sports and they are very compeitive as well.
i love it when my school doesnt even have a basketball court to train in and all the balls are horrible gosh i LOVE BEING IN MY SCHOOL WOWWWW

Trust him
The runs at Wentz build character
🤣🤣
so u made a club team, but not the actual team?
Could you make a video on some of the workouts or drills you did because whenever I play basketball I feel like I’m not improving cuz I just shoot around and don’t know what to do
Absolutely. If you can, I would play pickup and play against people that are better or older than you, it'll help give you experience and apply to game situations
ending was awesome

i was playing basketball from the age of 10 to 15 and got really good at it and was team captain the whole time. But i left basketball for 3 years and i am thinking of coming back this year (turning 18 in 2 months). My form is a lot better and my shot accuracy is better. What do you think about coming back? Is there still a chance for somewhat of a career? (From serbia btw)
Why not? If you love it then that’s all that matters and if you enjoy playing you should definitley go out and have some fun with it 😄
Johnny I don't play ball but this video was awsome
Thank you 🙏
Great vid, I’m confused a bit though. Are you playing NCAA D1 or NCBBA?
Thank you! I am playing in the NCBBA. Our school is Division 1 but I don’t play on the NCAA varsity team
Coaches was some haters fr
In my town there was like a clique of parents/students with some of the sports, and basketball was one of them. A few players who were really good and better than some of the guys on the team wouldn’t make it. That made the club leagues more fun, but it was just odd how it wasn’t a meritocracy for a few particular sports including basketball.
Bro did not go d1
What was the story with your high school coaches? Why did they keep cutting you?
I started with baseball now I’m going D1
