  • We have talked a lot about chain stay length on this channel, but in this video Nik shares a new take on how chain stay length might be affecting the bike during cornering. What do you guys think? Can you feel what Nik is describing on the trail?

Good insight that your bars can feel higher / more to the side on a longer front center. Drawing lines is a great idea! Kinda seems like the take-away is a less balanced ratio is going to use your wheelbase and both wheels less effectively. If you're going to haul around 130cm of wheelbase, at least make the most of that rather than having the rear wheel be a passenger! Loving y'alls details.

Damn, this is super interesting. Topics that you just never hear of popping up out of the blue. Liking it.

I have a 2017 Specialized Epic with 448mm chainstays and a really, really short front-center that I have only washed the frontend one time. I actually have some of my fastest times on that bike on some smoother, wide-open Enduro lines used in the Southern Enduro Tour ...and those were achieved in the middle of a longish trail/XC ride.

Loving these geek outs on short chainstays! interesting stuff

Something to also consider is the slacker the head angle I feel the frame reach should be shorter paired with a longer stem to allow for more weight over the front tire. Rather than these frame reaches being so long and having to run a 30-35mm stem length.

There’s a reason pretty much all dh racers use 45-50mm stems..

@@Bonky-wonky my point exactly. Enduro bikes are damn near as slack now days but they continue getting longer. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, but they have 30mm longer forks, at a slacker degree and greater offset@@Bonky-wonky

You are right. Plenty of slow plonkers need the safety of these gigantic front centers, and have been regurgitating that short cs are more flickable. Truth is Lots of ews riders on more reasonable reaches, and ha, and stem length. And long rear ends put more weight on the front end. A balanced bike weight shifts occur over the bottom bracket shifting your hips slightly fore and aft... with this weiner dog bullshit long front center short stay stuff youve gotta get way into thes forward plank position thats hard to shift weight back rearward from, sucks hate it. All bikes should be adjustable 440-450-455

After my trek roscoe did this to me i bought a helmet. I was 2 or 3 inches from missing a tree with my bar around this turn going into a steeper incline but needed to turn just a bit more on the pine needles. but i could literally feel that if i did the front would be gone. i started putting weight into it, and then both wheels wanted to slip because the back wheel wasn't far enough back to support it. Definitely feels like getting snipped when everything is going well. Bought some Asegui for the front and dhr2 for the back and that helped a lot, but now it's harder to push around than my fuel ex. Idk probably dd, and the soft compound was too much tire. Any recommendations. I love grip but also speed. Too many options. I have to ride to the top.

Honestly, I'm glad i saw this video because i thought i was going crazy or something. when i was buying it in the shop they said you shure. And also in the same visit they where like yyaaa its pretty playfull alright. Sooooo. I feel like they know. Still a great bike but i cant figure out what maxxis tires to get to keep the grip and speed

I find a shorter chainstay way more fun. Not faster but more fun.

Short cs are great fun, you just have to accept a shorter reach if you still want a balanced bike. Luckily this also contributes to a more playful bike.

Long chainstay for stability, more stable, not too easy to stanfinavia flick, less grip especially on ice, but once you ride on loose surface it's easier to control the slide. But no issues on my G1.
Shorter chainstay: more grip, in a straight line I guess, as more weight on the rear, more agile, easier to Scandinavian flick, make it skid. Easier to loop out, but with right size bike modern bike it's not as bad.
So the key is not go too long, too short.
Chainstay has to match the size of the bike.
Weighy of the bike also will play a role in grip and how easy the rear end is to flick. And of course tyres. But super light bike short chainstay will flick super easily.

No not for stability. Makes little difference in that... makes a massive difference in front grip, and a change to the window in which you pelvic trust to move weight fore and aft.

i’m proud to be an American if this is a concern. it means we solved everything up till here. Millions of immigrants abandoned their country and went towards white men. Immigrant teens will have access to a light bike with optimal geometry and suspension. The men in their nation failed them by accepting the stock chain stay length while seeking water for the day. If only we could dance too ! 😊

okay..so then what is the ideal f/r-center ratio? is it still around 1.84-1.86, under sag..? Or what are you finding (for guys 5'9")
