  • What Do We Think?
Extremely effective master volume, cascading gain stages, lush tremolo and gorgeous tube-driven spring reverb. Then you have a perfectly-voiced 3-band EQ accompanied by bright and jazz/rock toggle switches to conjure just the sonic personality you are looking for. To our ears, this amp is a D-style build that retains more “stock” Fender character… if you want it… than any other of Taylor’s models. A gateway Dumble, if you will.
Plugged into the Low input, you will be working with the Level knob to adjust your preamp gain. This input leans into classic Fender tones with added flexibility. Bump the Bright switch up for the scooped flavors of a Deluxe Reverb, or leave it down for the more neutral Bassman EQ. Flipping the Rock/Jazz switch to Rock setting juices up the mids and gives single-coils that extra thump and thickness you might be looking for. But it works on humbuckers too!
Turning the accent knob past noon opens up the top end in a way you typically associate only with a big amp run loud. Think SRV tones thru wide open Fenders, but at any volume. It just adds a little chime and grind to your upper frequencies, in a lively and uncompressed manner.
We mentioned the master volume quickly at the beginning, and this seems like the ideal place to dive into more detail. This master volume is incredibly linear! And the amp retains its tone right down to a miniscule little “1” on the volume knob. The amp is capable of delivering bedroom or living room volume levels with very little loss in the sustain, body and feel of the amp.
Now for those wanting to take this amp in the hallowed D-Style direction, plugging into the High input engages additional preamp stages controlled by the Overdrive knob. The preamp stage of the Low input remains active as part of the cascading design that is the hallmark of such builds as the ODS. The tonal contribution of the Overdrive section is slightly more midrange-forward and focused. So try blending the Level and Overdrive knobs at varying ratios to fashion different flavors of EQ.
The High input is also where the amp really shines if you are a player who likes to control things from the guitar. Especially in the 50W version, this amp excels at responding to dynamics from you as a player. It also cleans up exceedingly well on the volume knob and yields seductive, velvety vowels on the tone knob. Any way you want to approach it, you’re going to find delicious overdrive tones at all variety of gain levels.
To round out the feature set, we must touch on the wonderful reverb and the tremolo circuits. The reverb can be very splashy if desired, but it has a beautiful way of blending in behind the note at positions on the lower half of the knob. The tremolo can be turned on and off with the included footswitch, or via the toggle on the front panel. We said it was lush at the start, and indeed it is. Even at barely on, it’s going to add depth and breadth to your tone. And at the upper reaches it still sports a smooth, rounded waveform rather than a squared off stutter.
