What I'd absolutely love is if you'd tell stories of how you wrote your great epics like "Mountains", "Bridge Of Death", "Battle Hymn", "Achilles..." etc and what inspired you do them. Not just lyrically, also musically.
Also it would be amazing if you wrote another epic song like these and document the whole process from writing the lyrics up to arrangement, checking vocal lines with eric and getting into production with it.
      That would be incredible!

Joey, let me first of all tell you that you are one of my biggest influences as a bassist. I have always been fascinated by your approach towards the instrument, from your play style to the unique modifications that you do to your gear. I would be extremely interested in a video where you explain in detail all the customizing that you do, maybe even make a step-by-step guide in how to turn an ordinary bass into a "manowarrior" bass.
Right now I would like to ask you something that I have always wondered, what is the measure of your string spacing at the bridge? I thank you in advance. I will be eagerly waiting for new videos!

Manowar has always reminded me of a zen saying, which I will try to loosely recreate out of memory. Before the pupil realizes that they need to achieve enlightenment - the mountains are mountains. After they realize that they need to achieve enlightenment, but they are not there yet and they find themselves in struggle for reaching the ultimate goal - the mountains are no longer mountains. Once the pupil finally becomes a master and achieves enlightenment - the mountains are mountains once again.
In many ways this holds true for Manowar, at least from my experience. For many people who are on the path of achieving something or 'raising above their current selves', Manowar might sound too simplistic to even bother. There are not really complex time-signatures, no crazy tonality shifts or outside playing. But, when I was much younger Manowar were really the sound of nature to me. And if you think about it - nature is both the ultimate and the most simple thing you could think of. I would take those long hikes when I was 13-14 years old in the mountains, only with Manowar on my headphones. Often these would result in spiritual experiences, trip-like or expanding of consciousness without the use of any drugs. The best way to describe those is using the phrase "bringing your mind back to your soul".
But then, I realized that if I like music so much and it has this effect on me - maybe I should learn how to do it myself. The funny thing is that when I started learning music and pushing myself to learn more - while gaining all sorts of technical and theoretical knowledge, I also lost something in the process. And during this time, I no longer enjoyed Manowar music. "its just noise", "he is just showing off", "speed and loudness isn't everything" - you know the typical comments. So what was magic before, was suddenly mundane... Did Manowar change, or have I changed?
It took years to go back and to realize that the magic has been there all along, but it was that I have grown too complex and sophisticated to feel and understand it. At some point I even have forgotten about Manowar, until at some point I heard musicians who I greatly respect like Michael Akerfeld from Opeth or Karl Sanders from Nile to speak very fondly and with lots of respect of Manowar that I turned my eyes and ears back to it. Was it difficult to get back and understand what sounded so great to me in my youth? It was. Manowar has a very thick layer of things that they do, to specifically discourage people who are too full of themselves and people who are too quick to judge based on their, let's say 'incomplete' (or 'false' might be a word you like better) knowledge.
And then I got it. Manowar are just Manowar. Plain and simple. The river is just river, the mountains are just mountains. But in that simplicity is hidden the entire meaning of life. You think its easy to cover a song which is like 5-6 chords in total - well, go and listen to anyone, who ever tried to cover a Manowar song, and has failed. Like when you see the 1000th X-factor participant who covers Freddie Mercury and hits all the 'right' notes (even ones that Freddie had a hard time hitting in live situation) and yet it all sounds wrong. There are just some creations which become entities on their own, and entities are always bigger than their components. I can say for sure that Manowar are one such frigging entity!
Having said all that, I gotta say - I would be really happy to see you do Guyana, as there are some intricacies about your playing in the intro which I still don't get after 30 years of listening to this song. Maybe you would like to keep the mystery - I get it. But its quite requested in the comments, and I am sure that many will enjoy it. And I have subscribed. And spreading the word - don't worry about this.

    • @realjoeydemaio

Thank you for one of the most beautiful comments I’ve ever received it interesting to know. You’re one of the few people that understand the Zen way. I really I’m touched by your words and I mean that most sincerely the only words that I can truly say that have any meaning are thank you From the bottom of my heart I say this in all humility, and with respect from myself, the Manowar band crew, and everyone at Magic Circle Music people like yourself make the world a better place for all.

    • @krasimirpanayotov1062
      @krasimirpanayotov1062 9 месяцев назад +1

@@realjoeydemaio I am glad you liked my comment as it was not an upfront praise in a typical fan fashion. I really think that the 'Zen' component is important aspect of good music and vital for metal. There is another word that comes to mind and its "dichotomy". If you want to create a really sweet melody, you also need some sourness to oppose it, if you want happiness, you also need some sorrow, if you want to go to heaven, maybe you need a little bit of hell in your life. I think that good metal always exists as the mid-point of opposites and contradictions.
There is one bass solo from "Sign of The Hammer" album - "Thunderpick", it starts with those wild noises, and I can almost envision how confused some people might be. Yet, within those noises I can hear birds, ants and trees as if its some ambient music. So, within a certain perspective both are true - its noise and art at the same time. And if you were the type of person who would just skip the track, you would then miss some quite spectacular and melodic playing, which is melodic in the more standard sense, but is also hidden within the track and not put upfront to parade with it.
You never start upfront with the obviously good stuff, which reminds me of another Zen story, which I will again try to loosely recreate from memory, so apologies to anyone who might read and say "oh its not like this". People from far and wide have gathered to see a Zen master and to learn from his wisdom, they even paid money to buy tickets - it was almost like a metal show! And then, the Zen master showed up, and he was completely drunk and could barely stand. And many people left 'insulted' right at that moment. Then the Zen master did his best to stand up and try to talk, but once again he fell down, and even more people left enraged that they gave money to see that kind of awfulness. And at the end only a handful of people remained, probably the most stubborn or the most curious. It turned out that the Zen master was never drunk at all - it was all an act! He just wanted to make sure that his messages will reach the right people. Because there are certain messages, which you need to work hard for and to earn the right to hear as only then they can have a real impact on you.
So that's Metal and Manowar in a nut-shell for me. :-)

    Hail Joey!
I have so many things to tell you.
I want to start with the fact that I'm working very hard to get Manowar playing in Palermo, Sicily (I don't know if Manoel mentioned anything to you).
Seeing and hearing this song play makes my soul exalt, I love playing it and you don't know how much I'd like to play at least once with Manowar in concert.
I hope you will listen to my small but great Manowar tribute project. I called it WOTWU Project.

May I ask what kind of wood this Rarebird bass has? What did Dawk (RIP) do to your Demon II bass to make the neck so thin and at the same time not snap in half with the string tension? I'm assuming that the string gauges you normally use help to ease some of that tension, but it's still mindblowing stuff. I'm asking because I have a BC Rich bass which has great wood, great design and a neck-thru body, but the neck is too damn bulky and the pickups/electronics are garbage. Thanks so much for the comment actually no the strings on this bass I think go up to a 90 or 100 so I think they start somewhere around 45 I believe and I don’t know offhand what the what the spacing is it’s really not that close compared to some of the other bass’s I only use this one for recording because it has super high action and big strings. I prefer to have it that way when tracking I don’t use Roto sound strings are used to use them many many years ago. These are stainless steel and I forget the brand I’ll look around and see if I still have one of the packages somewhere to let you know, but thank you so much for your support and please subscribe to the channel and tell everybody about it that you know much more stuff is coming

I really love the arrangements! Like in WOTWU where its only lead first chorus then keys in 2nd and choirs in 3rd and such. I also prefer those albums where the bass in panned to one side and guitar to the other. Just fit the playing style of Manowar. Its more true! 😂 Would love to see a video where you go through your signal chain from bass, pedals, to amp.

I refer to Joeys bssses as a bassar or a guibass. The neck width but the nut slots and bridge position? I think even the old Rickenabker thing has a super narrow neck\fretboard? The guitar pickups instead of bass pickups. And what gauge strings? All why no other bass player sounds like this, cuz its a bass player playing a bassar, or a guibass I tell you lol

@@realjoeydemaio thanks for your answer. Before I discovered piccolo bass I used an acoustic guitar with tuning E-A-D-G-B-E (strings: EAD-EAD, all wound/bass). The sound was quite different, but chords were extremely deep and even dark. But I think it's time to try a real bass.

Joey, aren't you afraid to "lose a dB of sound" by not turning the volume knob all the way up again after muting the bass output, like in 4:11? Did that ever happen during a concert? I assume you customized that part of your bass guitars as well to prevent that from happening. That knob on your Demon bass is fucking huge.
Also, I noticed how you play with the pick, striking the strings with the round end of it. Unusual! Any insights about going for that style? When did you first start playing like that?
This video is awesome, I keep coming back to watch the motherfucker every week to get my monster bass tone fix!
