Both the Indy and F1 cars back then were so must better looking than they are now. I know you can't can't stop progress, but those cars looked how a racing car should look.
All that Williams needs is raised cockpit sides and the driver to wear HANS device. A modern remake of those cars - but with them using the exact same design - would mean that its probably a tiny bit stronger and a tiny bit faster due to lighter materials. Why don't we form a new league with these cars and with drivers willing to take the slightly higher risk (not as bad as most people think)
Many people dislike of Mansell, but i think that he was old fashioned... and always brave. I don't know. He's not my favorite person but certaintly one of my favorite drivers in f1 and indy 🤔🤔🤔😂
Penske pulled out all the stops in 1994 and the car almost another generation ahead of the Lola's, biggest advantage were their in house suspension units.
In 1994 they were labelled Mercedes-Benz only for the Indy 500. For the rest of the season they were just Penske Illmors. Mercedes-Benz fully entered the series in 1995!
That's the team's fault. They fired him after he won the '94 Australian GP. If he had been at Williams in '95, Damon HIll would NOT have been the only one challenging Schumacher and even Frank knows that. I lost some respect for him when he fired Mansell. His replacement: David Coulthard, a truly overrated driver who never won a championship despite several years at McLaren. I mean did you see the '95 Australian GP? Coultard crashed in the PITS! How is that even possible? Murray Walker's reaction was epic...
I think Mansell is one of the greatest drivers ever, without a shadow of a doubt. But his star was waining by ‘94 really. To win the F1 Championship at 43 in ‘95 was unlikely. He’d been in the sport since ‘81, so really was a different age. ‘95 even felt a lot different to ‘92, when he won it 3 years earlier. By then, Coulthard was faster, that was a fact, although his youthful inexperience let him down. But would DC have got the drive if Senna hadn’t have had his accident? Who knows - maybe he would have started out in ‘95 in a Minardi.
It wasnt all Mansells fault, when he joined indy the NewmanHaas Lola was essentially the Mercedes of IndyCar, but by 94 the Penske was atleast its equivalence and even in 93 lil al and Tracy were consistently beating him on the road courses.
Electone_Guy I guess because Newman-Haas had Ford engines they would not allow another car manufacturer on the team fire suit plus Renault isn’t a big seller here in the States.

Not too mention sound!!! They sound bloody great,,, the Indy cars manual shift,, driver's blipin the throttle in downshift a lost art now!
Absolutely. That Williams was a gorgeous looking car. So sad that it’s memory is tainted with the loss of Ayrton.

It's not progress when the old cars look easily better.

I give little Al a A+ for that dog fight

I always wondered why he did not carry the Renault badge on his overalls? Some kind of conflict with his American sponsorship?
