the birds were canaries, and yes they'd keel over before human miners would otherwise realise there was a problem with poisonous gases. There's even a famous (1960s) song called 'Canary in a coal mine'
We played a 3-player game of this, and enjoyed it alot. Smooth, clean and clever. Next time we will try it with 4, and we expect a much tighter building/mine experience.

Played it three times with two players now. Really like it. I feel like Johannes, it has a real nice feel to it. Works really well with two and doesn't overstay its welcome. Great job, CGE.

@59:00 I think that is an illegal placement for the mine since you can't build up from the tile in the third row, right?

Canaries were kept in coal mines to warm miners about carbon monoxide, since the bird would die quickly enough to allow miners to get out safely. Yeah, kinda dark for the birds

had a demo at essen and was a bit dissapointed. We had great expectations, maybe that was the reason. The game is solid and good, but was expecting more. Good to see you are fans

Loved the review but you played incorrectly the mining action in Round 6 at timestamp 59:03. You can place another mine tile besides or below. Symbols for building is being displayed on the cost with arrows pointing.

I played a demo at Essen of the first few rounds. At 4 the resource prices are changing more so it's harder to plan for your turn. I didn't enjoy it that much but that may be partly because the guy demoing wasn't enthusiastic

@12:15 it looks like you forgot to advance the citizen deck by one when you built your wood production building.
Correct! We do our best to not forget things, but it’s easier to do so while playing on camera, hehe! 😅
When you said there are 2 player friendly games you'd rather play at 2p than this, what were you referring to?
This game is good at 2 players, but I think it will be better at more (haven't gotten to try yet, but it's on the list)
Many games are best at 2p (for us), like Grand Austria Hotel and The Castles of Burungdy to mention a couple.
I'd rather choose to play the games that are best at 2 when we are 2 people, the few times we get to play older games :)

I cancelled my preorder for 2 reasons 1. Church building is broken 2. Doesn’t work with 2 players. Multiple reviews back this up. Too bad. Was looking forward to it.
Sad to hear! It works great at 2, but I can see that it will be better with more. I personally haven’t seen the church being broken, but we haven’t played the game 20+ times. I always guess the designers and developers have played the game loads of time, more than any of us have done, so I am always very skeptical of calling something broken or unbalanced! :) Just my two cents of course :)
It was broken meeple that talked about the church having some crazy overpowered bonuses.
I just watched his segment on it, and it doesn’t make sense to me. Some of the bonuses are better yes, but it’s all about timing. You cannot choose which is available, and the earlier (weaker) ones will be really good at a good time.
None of the bonuses felt like they won you the game or anything! I would really not cancel an order because Luke finds something unbalanced, but that is just my opinion of course :)

I think you forgot to pay taxes for the plot tokens a couple of times
I’m 100% sure you are right 😅 It’s always hard to keep everything correct when making playthroughs, but we do our absolute best!
