    I grew up with my Dad who worked long hours - he would leave the house before I woke up and would get home after my bedtime. I only saw him during the weekends or if I stayed up a little longer - he would stand in the doorway of my bedroom and whisper good night.
    One birthday, I was in bed and he came home late, he came into my room and whispered the words to Happy Birthday and cried. When people think of poverty, they think of lack of food, unable to pay bills but for me, most importantly what I lacked was the time with my Dad. I would rather skip a meal or two so I can have more time with my Dad.

When I graduated, I worked at his company for 1 year then became a tradesman getting a 3 year education and great pay. Dad was always proud of “his boy”. College is way overrated, unless your family can afford it. I consider myself a middle class American. The trades are begging for good people that don’t mind eating a little dirt for fantastic wage with super benefits. I will retire in 4 years at the age of 60. With no worries. I went out on my own, and pounded the pavement, fought, scraped, and learned everything i could with each job i had. All of that led up to 5 1/2 years of hard work, to be able to by a house for my family. Even then, my wife has to work to help pay the bills, because we cant make it on my income alone. We tried and over drew my accounts and put more money on the credit cards than we wanted to.

      We do not do it for the money but that is a stupid comment. Alot of us FFs only are making 8.00-9.50 an hour, less than 30,000 a year. Thats piss money dude. We deserve a livable pay at-least. Its sad whenever best-buy workers and grocery store workers make more then us whenever our job is extremely stressful and rough. Without people loving the job you have no Emergency Service workers because most people do not want to do what we do for such shit pay, let alone the job at all no matter the pay. A college degree doesn't make someone better then us, that's just a different career path, our job is just as important as anyone else. We deserve a pay that we can at-least somewhat support a family without having to work 2 ful-time jobs and a part-time job. I love my job and do not expect to get tons of money from it. No one is asking for hand-outs, I earn my damn pay. We just want a livable wage, that isn't much too ask for. You take Emergency Service for granted just like the politicians.

      Having a university degree is a pre-requisite in Australia to be a paramedic. Prior to that (about 15 years ago), the ambulance service put you through a diploma of health science (they paid for it too). Management realised that too many people were struggling to pass (despite having passed the recruitment screening process with exams like maths, English, spacial relations, problem solving etc.). It was costing about $120,000 over a three year period to train each student paramedic to qualified status. Those who struggled and didn't pass after the three years were sacked or put into non-emergency patient transport. With so much money being lost, they decided to employ only those who already had the qualifications (and put them through another year as an intern). I don't know of any community colleges you can attend where you graduate knowing 60 drugs off by heart, A&P down to cellular level, pathophysiology for dozens and dozens of medical conditions, 12 lead ECG rhythm recognition and so on. If being a paramedic was an 'experienced based career", you'd have your head in the textbooks on every day off just to learn what they don't teach you on the road. I'd often say to my interns that what you learn in university is the science of paramedicine, the on road component is when you turn that science into an art.
      The biggest evolution EMS is making (at least in Australia) is moving on from protocols and referring to cheat sheets for 10 or so drugs, 3 lead ECGs and Medical consults of the 1980s and 1990s to independent clinical judgement skills to plan patient management and to be able to rattle off everything about 60+ drugs verbatim.

    • @doncoleman4938
      @doncoleman4938 6 лет назад +1

      KiloByte I guess it all comes down to how well trained the governing bodies want their EMS staff to be, and whether they will pay staff accordingly. I have no idea on the training program of BLS and ALS staff in the US, but would be keen to see what's in the 1200-1800 hour paramedic courses mentioned on the web (a 45 week course seems very short). I had a look at emttrainingbase.com, and they mention about US paramedics having a median wage of $17/hour (and overtime ranging from $17.85-$35.14/hour-which I can't understand how Americans calculate overtime-our overtime is minimum 2x)). $17/hr for a US paramedic as opposed to $45 for an Australian paramedic is quite a difference (costs of living are fairly similar). For us old farts with a diploma who got our degree in paramedicine, it was tax deductable, so essentially free.
      What's the difference between BLS and ALS (we only have advanced care and critical care)? Are the wages for US paramedics on the website realistic? They seem ridiculously low compared to $80-120k/year for Australian paramedics.
