  • Healthy food is hard to come by in many sections of Bridgeport, CT. Especially on a food stamp budget. We follow a single mother shopping as she tries to make her SNAP benefits stretch.

Yeah, all developed countries have that except the US. Obviously there is poverty in every country but ie here in Austria being poor doesn’t mean you have to worry about food or rent. You just simply belong to the lowest 10% according to wealth. If you don’t have a job, you get money from the government (about a 1000$ + 250$ per child, you get paid your rent as long as you try to get a new job or further education, education is free in general, food laws here are way stricter than in the US and therefore Food is also healthier. Public education is funded through tax dollars that the government takes from people who have jobs. Thats why public education is so bad, because the government controls the spending.
Being poor in America means you have to worry about food and rent, thats why they have welfare programs (also funded by tax payers). And what you described about getting free money is literally our unemployment system, except you also get taxed on it.

Unless you've been in this situation you have no idea how much it sucks and how much of a failure you feel like at times depending on the government to feed your family, it can he degrading especially for women when it's our job to take care of our kids and we feel like we're failing by not being able to provide like we want to.... this isn't a life style choice, its a means of survival.

Yeah but as a cashier and someone who has had food stamps I can tell you a majority of people spend their food stamps on junk which is why we need to take Doritos, candy, energy drinks, cakes, soda all of that off the list of things people should get. Cause if you’re really hungry and starving for good health and nutrition then you should be making your food from scratch . Buying flour in bulk, produce on sale , stuff like that and making sure your cupboards aren’t an open buffet if you’re family is really starving. Also there are a lot of community dinners, that people assume are just for homeless people but again they are community dinners. Also food banks always nearby and a lot will help in emergencies. Thirsty? Find a library they usually have fountains. If this was a 1930 depression people wouldn’t know how to handle themselves and that saddens me. I’ve watched how Americans shop on food stamps and then I’ve watched Indians(from India) and Hispanic buy food. Trust me when I say people who immigrate here know how to shop to maximize what they get cause they are doing it the right way. The food stamp is a trap when you think you can depend on it for the rest of your life. It’s only there to help temporarily. That’s why when you report your earnings they adjust how much food money they’ll give you. Personally I think they could do better on that figuring not everyone could save to move and feed their family at once maybe they should allow 2-3 months for earning more before they adjust it so it gives people a chance to get off the system better since nothing is being solved now. At the end of the day though there is no excuse for starving in America especially democrat cities where there are all these resources.

Just look around you each day, think of everything you've been given, everything you've experienced, and thank god for the position you are in. barley is cheaper and healthier than rice. Beans and oats are cheaper and healthier than cereal. Eggs, apples, frozen kale, canned tomatoes, canned tuna and salmon are cheap and fairly healthy When I'm broke I make crabby patties:
2 cans of salmon ($0.88 each)
1 can of crushed tomatoes ($1.00)
      half a chopped onion ($0.85)
      1 egg: $0.33
      leftover bread crumbs ($0.00)
a bit of grated cheese ($0.60)
      olive or peanut oil ($0.60)
      greens: ($3.00)
mix in bowl, and turn into patties, put on grill, cook for 5 minutes each side and put over bed of greens done. This feeds 4 people, for l$1.81 a serving (and I probably overestimated the costs.) For 8 people that would be $14.52 a meal. I can see how that adds up, but it has a lot more nutrition value than processed breakfast cereals and rice all the time and when one has 7 children, one has to expect a higher grocery bill.
I buy whole chickens, and I get 5 meals out of it, roast chicken potatoes and salad, chicken salad, a chicken stir fry, then take all the bones and skn and make bone broth, make chicken soup, and then make rissotto. $9 for a chicken, plus some greens, vegetables, noodles, rice etc, and you have some great meals for on the cheap. :) Let's say you have 3 chickens for 8 people.
      3 chickens- $27
      1 lb of potaotes: $4.00
3 heads of spinach: $7 (for salads)
5 chopped of tomatoes: $5 (for salads)
2 large bag of frozen vegetables for soup, stirfry, and risotto: $12
      spices: $2
2 packs noodles for soup and stirfry: $8
      salad dressing: $0.85
      rice: 2.00
That's $13.37 per meal to feed 8 people healthy balanced meals. That's not bad

Its not that I have a problem with her on food stamps is where she says $700 is not enough what is she buying three little ones and myself 450 dollars a month on groceries and we eat very well what is she buying that's $700 it's not enough for groceries damn how much does she want 1000

    • @august21xp
      @august21xp 8 лет назад +39

+Jocelyn Paul $700 for 5 people is actually too much. You can buy organic at Whole Foods with that much and still have money left over, the problem is that people like her don't know how to cook , don't bother learning healthy recipes, because they think that people who do eat healthy and exercise are shallow, so they buy the frozen pizzas and burgers and cry about being obese , while living in this Hollywood mentality, that they will never be given the chance of having. She should have stopped at one child, and gone back to school, to become an actual teacher. Also, these obese women are always getting pregnant by anyone who thinks their cute, what happened to just dating and not opening your damn legs. She obviously had enough to pay a babysitter to have sex. SMH

+jeniece grear "Not judge", people who work hard all damn day have the right to judge, she has 4 kids and has the nerve to complain, had she had some morals and self esteem 1st she wouldn't be obese, second she would respect herself enough to get married or have a career at least. I only feel bad for the kids that didn't ask to be here and will sadly repeat the cycle again and again. I'm tired of people complaining about living in bad neighborhoods, but put themselves in those situations, you want a nice neighborhood with healthy supermarkets and no crime ,than go to college , get a career or get 3 jobs and dont have kids till your stable.

I remember seeing how frustration she was that the price of veggies and fruits were more expensive than the grocery store which was a good min away from our apartment. I will gladly support tax dollars finding these campaigns...however, i personally know those who intentionally leech off the backs of society. My feeling is, as long as you are working, disabled, or are on unemployment you should receive benefits. There's no shame in working a minimum wage job. Too many think this is beneath them.

If you had definite evidence that someone from among your relatives stole property from another person I'm sure you would turn them it. This is the same thing. Of course, I was talking about when you have definite proof. Chase Phillips I know what it feels like. My family has 6 kids and one mother. My dad is obsessed with politics and has lived in Africa for 5 years. We were stable before he left because he had a job. But now that he's gone, my family now relies on government loans, or whatever their called. My father has visited two times for a short period of time. He sends us money every once in a while, but it's not enough. We also have a terrible neighbor who frightens us, so it's a tough situation. But, good luck to anyone struggling financially :)

I feel like in conjuction with food stamp approval there should be offered budgeting and cooking classes to help families who may not have the wherewithal to use the resources they can purchase in the most efficient way. I know that cooking from scratch can help significantly stretch already limitted food budgets and are healthier than convenience foods. I personally think removing home economics from schools has been as detrimental as removing art, music etc. REAL LIFE support for real life problems.

People need an incentive to work. Give them a job that pays a livable wage and they will work. Why have the stress of working when your still miserable and can barely put food on the table. Who wouldn't rather stay home and have more free time. Education makes your goals more attainable and puts you closer to finding a better job. My older neighbor (bless her soul) helped me learn to cook with ingredients rather than processed EVERYTHING. It does take more time but you can cook in bulk and put some in the freezer for another meal later. I ended up NOT needing food stamps once i REALLY learned how to cook. I know things have changed a lot in the last 5 years, but the process is the same. Meal planning. Pick 14 meals your family likes and rotate them every 2 weeks. This way you can plan ahead and always have the ingredients you need. Anything else like snacks are able to be changed according to what fruits and treats are in season or on sale. The key is you have to stop buying convenience foods and cook from scratch. If you are home and not working anyway why can't you do that? Your family may bulk at first, but eventually will come to love it and will be full longer. And healthier. I'm sure school age children of families who get food stamps get free breakfasts and lunches at school so the majority of their food stamps will be spent on dinner, snacks and weekend meals. It is so much easier now to find ways to make your budget work like this by watching youtube videos of people who really have done this. This woman has some great ideas and can help people with a small food budget. She has regular meal plans and recipes and also some for if your budget is running out. If you receive $700 a month for 5 people there is no reason for your children to be hungry. And you do not need to feed them a bunch of starchy, processed, convenience foods. Even people without food stamps can learn a lot to make their food budget work for their family. ruclips.net/video/7TrTsRoyH_A/видео.html

I don't have kids to support but I have bills that have to come first. It's awful to say that I have to put a human necessity last in order to pay rent, car, cell phone, insurance etc. I don't have help other than SNAP. It angers me when I see people saying that we should get a government mandated "box of food" per month, it upsets me when cashiers see my EBT card and give me the look that us food stamp receivers know oh so well. The "you're using tax payer money" argument is invalid because I too pay taxes lol. I pay them every single week. Living in this state is rough and it's expensive. Gavin Lee A phone is a necessity if that’s the only means of communication between yourself and your job, as well if you have an emergency. Healthcare insurance is a necessity if you have medical problems in order to treat your medical problems and you’re required by law to have your own healthcare policy or your employer has to offer it to you and car insurance is a necessity if you need a car in order to drive to work as most states require you to carry at least liability insurance on a vehicle in order to operate it. Do you live in your Mom’s basement? Because you obviously have no real concept of what things cost and what’s required by law. Quit belittling her for only using SNAP at least she does have a job and works and doesn’t sit on her ass.

I'm constantly trying to give her fruits, veggie juice, water, PB&J, oatmeal, potato hash, mushroom tacos, pasta with hidden veggies and more. When I knew my temp job was about to end, I invested in a blender, juicer, spice grinder, spiralizer and hand mixer. It has helped me make healthy cheap meals. You really can feed a family on a $760 / month FS budget. But you have to plan carefully. I have 5 adults in my family and I spend less than that for a whole month. We eat very well. You have to make everything from scratch. And you can't waste a single penny on snacks or chips, or prepared foods or soda. You drink lots of water, which is better for you anyway. You eat oatmeal for breakfast. And you eat tons of eggs, beans and rice. Fruit is always the cheapest that is in season. The truth is that people today DO NOT know what it means to make everything from scratch. They think that means hamburger helper or Marie C. Frozen entrees. You have to do mainly once-a-month shopping except for milk and bread. And you don't deviate from the plan, unless you get something free or next to free.

@@michaelr.4878 Interesting outlook. Is it possible that this young lady was never taught how to cook from scratch or stretch her groceries? This woman loads ALL 4 of her children up on the public bus to go buy food. A lazy mother would leave the children at home unattended. I agree that she needs to find different ways to make the food last. But to just talk so negatively about her is really shameful. You are the problem with society. You'd rather kick someone when they are down rather than help them by pointing them in the right direction to go. God bless you.

No, she deserves better from the powers that be who ship our jobs to foreign countries and hire illegals and she deserves better from the children's father or fathers seeing as how they helped her bring those children here. We the taxpayers don't owe her or her children anything. We do enough: we pay for WIC, housing, food stamps, child care, education, free/reduced lunches, after school programs, etc....what more do you think the taxpayers should be responsible for? You must be out your damn mind.
