I have Black, red and brown colours, so is it safe to assume that Black remains neutral, Red for live and Brown for earth?

Black is usually neutral. Red is live, brown is also usually live. So in your case you should check for an earth wire maybe bear with no jacket on. Earth is green or green/ yellow mix. You would need to measure with a multi meter in my opinion.

@@nomacalasibanda1937And I saw green as earth, red live abd blue neutral. This is crazy. If these people can't be consistent with something like electricity I wonder what they're consistent with.

What cable do i need to install an extra socket to an existing ring main and can i chase it into the wall. Do I need a conduit etc?

Can you do one where you run an outlet (plug) from a lightswitch, but the outlet must still be live even when light is switched off.

South African Wiring codes are deadly. People still using red and black. As solar becomes more common we need to keep dc and ac on seperate colours. Not your fault that somebody used 2 different neutral colours to wire this up. But the least you could have done was put the correct colour heat shrink over the live so anybody in future could benefit from that.
