I was telling this to friends years ago when we were talking about how a person can create original ideas. They thought the key was to lock themselves away and work on ideas they never heard of before. I told them that was stupid because what if someone else had already did the idea before or during you being locked away. At that point you're just fooling yourself until you start talking to others. Original ideas today are more of a new "Flavor", rather than a new "Ingredient". New Ingredients can happen but they often happen around the introduction of revolutionary technology leaps.
Original ideas don't exist, everything is derivative. The best way to come up with something approximating original is to take in as many ideas as you can and produce something better or different using what you've learned, or in other words research and development. Creativity isn't magic that happens inside of your head, it's a process like anything else.
My memories as a college student just flashes right through my eyes. It's reminded me of how many times my idea got rejected because someone already did it first. It's suck

Just don't copy paste someone else and it's all ok. In stories, no one *owns* a troupe, they only own/copyright the *expression* of the troupe. For example, the underdog troupe is a very beloved one. I can write my own underdog named Jack with half-baked magical powers, but I can not write Midoriya Izuku who is powerless and wants to be a hero (My Hero Academia anime). Hope it makes sense.

Thus making it a matter of who publicized thier invention first, to be able to be deemed as the first "inventor" of something, rather than it being the concept of who actually invented this thing first. I believe there could possibly be a lot of hidden discrepancies with patents, copy rights, and ownerships, that will never truly be known.
This could be a time machine skit in the future where someone came back from the future having stole Caleb's ideas and then going back further before Caleb presents the idea. Thus making Caleb look dumb. That'd be fire 🔥 📛

though I learned later that most people just put a wheel in their engines and dont power their engines with the pistons, and that was after I built a piston powered plane

This is actually what we used before the invention of plastic for food containers. It was regulated in WWII due to the war but before that wax paper was the primary way to wrap food.
If only that guy worked with others imagine how far ahead we would be had he not chosen to independently work on these things. (Though his inventions likely work separately from our present ones and could be used as an alternate system disconnected from the rest)

I've got this idea for a writing instrument. Take two halves of cedar and hollow out a half circle. Insert a carbon rod and join the halves. It's far cheaper than a fountain pen and you can use it upside down. I call it the "Carbon Stick."

Not with anything big but like there was this game called Dawn of War Dark Crusade (or maybe it was the prequel to that) and you can make custom Paint schemes for your army in it, and when I was 14 or smth I made a Paint Scheme that looked EXACTLY like the White Scars without knowing what the hell the White Scars were at that point. And then when Soulstorm came out the White Scars where a Selectable color from the beginning and I thought for like a month that Games Workshop stole my Idea lmao.

I've got this idea for a writing instrument. Take two halves of cedar and hollow out a half circle. Insert a carbon rod and join the halves. It's far cheaper than a fountain pen and you can use it upside down. I call it the "Carbon Stick."
