- Published in April 2020, Klausmeyer's book is 600 pages of 300 of the best fishing flies out there. While not a detailed how-to book, every fly has a color picture, the recipe and a few paragraphs on the history of the fly or how it could be fished.
This book can be purchased at: amzn.to/2IoAoNt
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.
I just did the random drawing and congratulations to WeaverwoodsClumbers. Please drop me a note and I'll get the book in the mail to you! Thanks to everyone who participated.
Thank you so much
@@WeaverwoodsClumbers Just send me an email with mailing address and I'll get it on the way to you! matt@savageflies.com
Thank you for your hard work
Sounds like a great book. Ill have to add it to my library. Thanks Matt.
It is Jeremy- appreciate you watching my friend!
That book looks interesting. Good review.
THANKS MATT AS YOU KNOW I PUT THIS IN MY FLY TYING LIBRARY OF BOOKS...THANKS TO YOU....AS ALWAYS I WILL BE WATCHING...HAVE A AWESOME DAY...SEE YA JOE
Thanks Joe! Now that I looked back through the review, I wish I had shown more of the saltwater flies. As you've probably noticed, there really are a bunch of cool ones in the book.
@@SavageFlies yes matt I seen some cool ones I would like to give a try for sure...you can always go back and do some...sure they would get views as all your videos do....maybe something to think about...I will give some a try....😎🏁
Thanks Matt, this book sounds great
Need to check it out
Oh yeah, it's a good one. I'm going to enjoy tying out of it for the next couple of years. :-)
Thanks for the review Matt. Loving the channel and most of all the history lessons. #cowdung
Another book on my list!
Definitely worth it. It's a great book!
Thank you for the book review; never realized this book was so comprehensive, thorough, and a good background on flies. I like to tie for bluebills and any fish really. Have a great evening.
#cowdung
Thanks James! (And sorry I'm just responding! I just realized there is a comment section called "Held for review" and some comments that RUclips thinks are links or hashtags end up there. Some do not but this one got stuck there and I just now saw it.)
Thanks for review
You got it Gary; appreciate you watching!
cool looking book
Thank you my friend!
Thanks for the review Matt! I'll be adding this to my library this Christmas (or possibly sooner...) #cowdung
#cowdung. Great looking book.thanks for the quick review matt.you ROCK!!👍
Thanks Matt that would be a nice first book of fly tying to put in my library #cowdung starting off my day right 🍻 thanks Matt morning eyes 👀 over looked the hastag lol
You got it! Make sure you go back and put the hashtag (#) in front of cowdung so the program that will randomly pick a comment will see it. (You can edit your original comment.)
#cowdung great book review, amazing how people cone up flies.
Thanks for the Channel Matt.
Keep it Tying
Good morning Sir Matt, awesome review of this book, I like to check out the salt flies. #cowdung a couple of months ago I was on the Gulf Coast at Point Comfort fishing for red and black drums also speckled trout. Have a Great day Sir Matt.
You asked about classic series. You know I’m really into “old school” flies. That series would be great. Also look at the New England bass flies from way back when, the look more like butterflies than fishing flies. Thanks again for your goid work.
Thanks Michael. Some of these old classic flies can look simple but really take some skill. I was trying to do Marbury's Blue Jay the other night. I tied one and it looked good enough, then I started recording and the next four totally kicked my tail. It was about midnight by then and I still needed a video for the next morning so I gave up and did the Peacock Caddis. The Blue Jay is an awesome looking fly, but dang was it challenging!
Going to have to get this book for down here in Florida!
Oh forgot to add #cowdung
Yep, if you ever tie for the saltwater, it's definitely worth it!
@@SavageFlies most of my tying is for snook and redfish here in Florida. You need to get down to Florida and try a little saltwater fly fishing! You will love it
I always enjoy the channel. I especially like the Smoky mountain flies. Looks like a good book I’ve read Fly Tyer for years.
# cowdung
Thanks Chip! I appreciate the note. Cheers. -Matt
#cowdung Nice review Matt. Looks like a great book and don't totally discount the salt. This is a great time of year for pickerel in the tribe.
Thanks for the great book reviews Matt. That looks like another good one.
Definitely is!
Matt, thanks for the great review. #cowdung
That's one I don't have in my library, Matt. #Cowdung.
#cowdung
Great review of a new book!
Thankfully those saltwater flies are usually very effective warm water flies. Looks like a good book! #cowdung
#cowdung thanks again Matt!!!
Great review and as always thanks for the videos.
You bet Samuel. Appreciate you watching!
Don't think this is a book I would put in my libery, but would like to thumb throug it and give it to my friends son, who is a up and coming fly tyier. #cowdung Everyone have a good day and happy tying.
Fly tying magazines.... I didn't know they even existed! nice review Matt. That hopper looked good, I don't think you have done anything like that have you?
Oh yeah, Otto. There are a few tying magazines for nerds like me! And no, I haven't done anything as flashy as that hopper. Maybe in the spring. :-)
@@SavageFlies that would be cool to watch!
Thanks for the review of David’s book!
Skipping on the you know what so someone else can get it
Thanks Sarge, and appreciate it my friend. PS: my channel stickers should be here this week. Fingers crossed they come out okay. :-)
Thanks for the review Matt. This might be the only Klausmeyer book I don't have in my library. Looks like a really nice library of flies. Cheers
Thanks Darren. You probably have his Orvis Guide to Beginning Fly Tying (which I do not have but am thinking of reviewing.) Looks like his 101 Favorite Nymphs and Wets is pretty popular too, but I'm betting there's a lot of overlap between that and this new one. (But this new one has a lot of history which I love!)
Nice review Matt thank you for that stay safe
Thanks Tom. Appreciate you watching my friend!
Great review buddy, this looks like a very nice book #cowdung
enjoy watching your channel love it #cowdung
Commenting for Terry Self who was having issues with leaving RUclips comments. #cowdung
Nice hashtag for this one. I scrolled down to the comments before watching the video, saw the hashtag, and wondered why anyone would leave that as their comment. Sort of like checking out the last page of the book before actually reading it!
Yeah, I'm trying to be creative to have a little fun. :-) I've been checking your site daily and you're just about to get to that first milestone! I think my channel is fairly typical, and it took me as long to get my first 100 subscribers as it did the next 900. Thanks for watching and being so supportive Debora. It's really appreciated!
#cowdung
Good morning Matt, nice review 👍
Looks fun! #cowdung
Nice book, would look great on my desk 👍#cowdung
#cowdung
Would be a great book to have.
Seems to be a nice book. Thx Matt #cowdung
great book review !!!!! Matt #cowdung
Thanks for the review. I was eyeing this up when putting together my Christmas list. Do you know if the material is a repeat of David's earlier books, like Favorite Dry Flies or Favorite Nymphs? #Cowdung
He does mention that some of the flies in this book were also in his earlier books. I don't have either of his earlier ones so can't compare page by page, but I'm sure there are enough new patterns to make this book worth it. (And sorry I'm just responding! I just realized there is a comment section called "Held for review" and some comments that RUclips thinks are links or hashtags end up there. Some do not but this one got stuck there and I just now saw it.)
Hi Matt. I haven’t been through all the videos but after watching this review I was wondering if there were any books you recommend or had recommended for people just getting into it? #cowdung
#cowdung some of us are having to look into saltwater flies living on the coast
It’s gotta be good if he edits for fly Tyer mag
#cowdung
#cowdung Is this the right place to apply for the drawing?
This book is on my Christmas present wish list but I don’t know if I will actually get it. There were limited copies at Amazon & a few stores I checked. If I get lucky & win it and then also get it as a gift, I’ll let you know, & you can send it to another tyer (note spelling).
Ha! You know when I see a word like tyers, I think of the older English spelling of those round rubber things on our cars! There is similar confusion around die and dye. People who are about to die, will soon be dying. But people who are about to dye some wool, will soon be dyeing. (And if you get a second, edit your comment to get rid of the space between the # and cowdung. Didn't you do that last time too???)
@@SavageFlies Extra space next to pound sign now deleted. Sorry. Thought the other entries looked like they had a space.
Will send you an email about saltwater fly use for freshwater fish sometime later this week. Busy helping wife w/our online Christmas gift orders.
Sticking with “tyer,” the “old-fashioned “ spelling. “Tier” (tee-er) means steps or level to me, but I guess I am old-fashioned anyway. I belonged to United Fly Tyers & subscribe to Fly Tyer magazine. :-)
#cowdung thanks Matt
# cowdung looks like a nice book
It is! Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
Congratulations, you won the book. Please send me an email to matt@savageflies.com and I'll get it in the mail to you!
Great video! #cowdung
