My brother sent me that book a few years ago and it did reintroduce me to a hobby I enjoyed but life happened. For me it is a nice book to have around and it is fun to see how a fly has changed over the years.
Cool to hear! I certainly know how life can happen and rearrange our priorities. I pretty much took a twenty year break from tying between 1990-2010 or so. But the good thing is it's always there waiting for us when we're ready to come back. :-)

Received book this morning, took with me to an appointment and began reading. Found it very, very interesting. Will use history of one of the "Fifty" as introduction to my presentation at club's Monday Zoom fly tying meeting. Thank you for the gift and your channel.
Congratulations my friend for the success of your channel. I’m very happy to have your channel to learn about fly tying! You’re making #history here! Thank you

Hi Matt!!! Congrats on the uptick in subs, you certainly put in the work! I have this book, really enjoyed referring to it for the past few years. It's amazing how many patterns are the offspring of the early flies. I learned the meaning of the fly names too. Like "palmer" - little did I know that on Palm Sunday, as a child, sitting around the table with my grandma and her family making crosses and hearts out of palm fronds, would lead to wrapping feathers ( which look like palm leaves - the barbs like palm fronds coming out of a stem ) around a hook! Another revelation was finding the meaning of Tup's after months of research and asking many tiers! Then some were inspired to fish it subsurface and develop nymphs. The pink squirrel nymph looks similar to Nemes soft hackled Tup's. I think this book will make you a better tier as well as a fly fisher. That's Matt, great book.
Joe- great comment my friend! And yes, this book is filled with these little nuggets. I've long known that a Tup's Indispensable was called "indispensable" because of the ram's scrotum hair, but I always thought that the Tup part came because it was a guy's name. It turns out that a "tup" is just another name for a ram (www.dictionary.com/browse/tup). I hadn't read the part about how the term "palmer" came about. I'm going to go check that out now! Thanks for the note. This really can be some interesting stuff. Cheers. -Matt
@@SavageFlies Hey Matt, I went to that link - "no definition for tup". But Google did - noun: a ram, verb - to copulate, as with a ram to a ewe. I guess indispensable relates to the value of the pattern or that part of a ram's anatomy essential for procreation, or the "secret" for the dubbing mix. I too thought Tup was a tiers or fisherman's name. However I did stop looking for the urine stained underbelly of a vixen red fox for the Hendrickson ;o) The "palmer" thing was in the book. The wanderings of a hairy caterpillar like the pilgrims returning from the Holy Land carrying a palm leaf folded into a cross. I said "eureka!" just like we did when I was kid! Also the online photo of a palm leaf looks like a feather's structure, which was a very cool connection. It was elementary "my dear Watson", ;o) That book is great, thanks for making me pick it up again... and again. Don't ask what Gartside's Secret Stuff is :o)

Hi Matt, I’m looking at Don Kirks book “Hatches & Fly Patterns of the Great Smokey Mountains. I have conquered some. Thinking about attempting Howell’s Simple Bunny, What do you think?
I think that's a challenging one! I've thought about tying it but I can't tell how he ties the overwing zonker strip on. He doesn't mention lashing it with a wire rib (matuka style), so maybe it's just tied in behind the eyes... but then it would flap all over the place. I might have to order some lighter colored rabbit zonker and give it a try. Now if you do tie one, email me a picture and let me know how you did it. (matt@savageflies.com). It does look like it would be a great fly for some big trout or warm water bass. :-)

@@SavageFlies Sorry Matt. It must have been the mischief angel who made me suggest that. If you want a chuckle, Kelly Galloup recently posted about the Tup’s & a story about his extensive search for the magic material in his younger days. =}

Sounds like a very interesting book . I’ve been wanting to visit the history of fly fishing museum. #history
Same here Chip. The one in Manchester, VT looks amazing. But the Catskill museum up in NY looks pretty cool too. I might have to hit both on the same road trip. :-)
Hmmm. I have been thinking about getting a used copy of this for a while, but never could get a good read on what exactly it was about. I will pull the trigger and buy a copy now. Thanks.
Thanks Ryan; appreciate the note. If you're a bit of a history buff with our sport, you'll definitely enjoy the book. Cheers. -Matt
@@SavageFlies Received the book in the mail yesterday. I am really enjoying the first chapters on the early history. Having a history degree on that period of English history, I learned a few things I did not know. I was unaware of sources prior to Isaak Walton's Compleat Angler.
Ryan- glad to hear you got it my friend! Thanks for letting me know. 👍
#history. I’m a 14 year old fly tyer and have been doing it for about a year. Love the videos and can’t have too many books

#history Matt it goes with out saying you rock thank brother cheers tight lines I caught my first trout on a pmd I tied two days ago and three more today all 17"
Holy cow Mike, that is awesome! Nothing like some big trout on a fly rod, and on your own flies makes it that much more special. Congrats my friend!
Nice review!! Sounds like a great book!! #history
Thanks Dan! It is a nice one to have for us history buffs. :-)

Thanks for the review. #history
You bet Amy. Thanks for watching!
@@SavageFlies Haha, you sound like me. I just put an order in. I haven’t been able to figure it out. Definitely big trout and warm water bass. Both available here on the Clinch.
@@markshannon2489 I'll have to give it a shot. How hard could it be? I ask myself. Of course I've asked myself that before and made some terrible looking monstrosities. :-) Mary Orvis Marbury's Blue Jay kicked my butt for two straight days. I still haven't made a good looking one of those!
Nice review of this book Thank you #HISTORY
Appreciate it James. Good luck!
That book looks like its awesome !! #history
Thanks Franky. Good luck!

Squirrels skin - ruffled grouse - natural fur dubbing in a dispenser with all kinds in it.. moose body bleached + natural - antelope - coyote badge - gray fox - raccoon - natural and bleached- and two fly man kits bass bug × panfish × topwater trout popper...and fly tyer magazine for spring 2021....LOL
@@harryjoesather6539 That's awesome Joe! You're going to be busy for a while :-)
Looks like a good book, but do they have one of Kelly Galloup's flies in there? #History
It is a solid book Johnny, but it doesn't have any of Kelly Galloup's patterns in it. I'll bet Bob Linsenman's "Modern Streamers" has some of his flies in it.
@@SavageFlies Got that one.
Great book review!! #history

Reggie, thanks for the note. But you missed this drawing by a couple of days! Do note, that when you see a book review on here, I'm usually giving a copy away, but I only keep the contest up for a day or two. Don't worry though, we'll have more books on here before too long.

Matt, I have a collection of fly ting and fly rod building books for the mid 1970s when I was into fly tying. Some of the books are from the authors you have mentioned in your videos Like to read the history of the sport. #HISTORY.
Roman- that's very cool. I love old books too and recently just bought a used copy of one that I tied from when I was a kid in the 80s. My copy had long ago disappeared. Thanks for watching my friend. Good luck!
Loving the videos. #history
Thank you Nicholas. Good luck!
This book sounds fascinating & a must-have. I hope you will feature the Tup’s Indispensable soon & describe its origins. ;-)
#History of Flyfishing ...
Almost 3k!
Thanks Bob... I've got the Tup's on my list, but am going to have to go with the more modern mix of dubbing. I don't want to get that close to a sheep. Or wait, I guess it would have to be a male, so a ram maybe? Either way, I'm not messing with that. :-)
@@SavageFlies Sorry Matt. It must have been the mischief angel who made me suggest that.
If you want a chuckle, Kelly Galloup recently posted about the Tup’s & a story about his extensive search for the magic material in his younger days.
=}
I’ll have to check out Kelly’s. And yet another coincidence, Brian Flieschig (Mad River) had a tying video out today on it. This is one of the few current videos I’ve seen of someone doing what I’ve been trying to do for months. 😁
#history another great show
Appreciate it John. Good luck!
