All- I just did the drawing for the book. Congratulations to gdreilly. So GD, please send me an email with your address and I'll get this thing in the mail to you ASAP. Thanks to everyone who participated and left a comment. I should have at least one more giveaway later this month so make sure to check out any reviews you see posted. Cheers. -Matt
Hi Sir Matt. -32 windshield here, I'm jumping my wife's car. Took the covid shot yesterday not feeling to good today. Sitting in the suv and seen you posted a book review I liked it very much so #humpy. Have a great weekend Sir.
Thanks Edward! I did see on the news that Texas may be getting a big storm. Good luck, stay safe and keep warm. (I haven't had my COVID vaccine yet but really wish I could get on the list!)
Good review Matt. Your honesty and true passion is what this makes this channel a delete to watch. Don,t need the book but hope it finds a needed home.
The first trout fly I learned to fish was a nymph and I tied it up, and it was scrunchy looking. I like that this book starts with Nymphs. Good Review.
Thanks Matt again. As a new tier, I'd recommend this book especially if you can find a good second hand copy. Really helpful steps well explained and the split page system is simple yet innovative. Cheers!
Oh yeah, I agree Neil. Unfortunately it's hard to find a used copy of this one. Hopefully the price will come down before too long. Thanks for watching my friend!
Been tying for a couple of years now. The in-depth section that explains further the techniques being used sounds intriguing. Thanks for the review. #humpy
Liked the honest review of the book. Also liked the refresher information. A lot of us aren’t getting g any younger sometimes it’s hard to recall. Certainty technique. Thanks again #humpy
Brand new to fly tying. But enjoying it a ton. Found your found your channel the other day and have to say you make most of these flys look easy to tie. Can’t want to try a couple I have seen you make. #humpy
Hey, thanks Nicholas! I appreciate the kind comment. Be sure to let me know if you have any requests or general questions. Lots of times you can ask a question in the comments and one of the veteran tiers will answer for you. It really is a helpful and friendly community. So welcome my friend! Cheers. -Matt
This book is one of the few I keep on my bench. Don't need it often anymore but used it often 10+ years ago. I know I reviewed something in it a few months ago. Video idea: Storage an organization of materials natural an synthetic. I have come up with what I think is a versatile an expandable system that makes it easy to find what I want. Be a lot easier to show a picture or two than explain it.
Thanks! This is a nice idea for a video. If you want to share some pics via email, I can see what you're thinking about. (matt@savageflies.com). Cheers...
Just moved to WA from TX and about to start learning to tie my own flies. Nice review, if I don't win, I'll pick up those other books you mentioned. #humpy
Excellent! I lived in Bremerton for a while back in the early 2000s. Lots of fly tying history in the PNW. Check out this playlist when you get a chance. I've done reviews of both the Hughes and Gathercole books here. ruclips.net/video/-kUee8AXkMM/видео.html Good luck!
looks like a good book i can pick up some tips on still being kind of new to tying ... think that hold's me back a little because i am still learning....was great to see this post today i always look forward to your video's matt....thanks....#humpy .....and as always i will be watching...see ya joe..and put it on my amazon list..
@@SavageFlies lol... i have 10 already....and thats just from april 2020...lol and the amount of fly tying materials i have got is crazy just from april 2020...and got a order coming from j stockard this week...lol...and caddis fly shop...need more storage ideas..working on that now..
Thanks man! Good luck with the Catskill flies. The best thing about these... even if we don't tie them as perfectly as Mike Valla or Lee Wulff or the Dettes, they can still be great fish catchers. :-)
I'm not familiar with that one, but when I just looked at Skip Morris books on Amazon, I saw a couple of really interesting ones on Bass and Panfish flies. Still a bit expensive but I may look for some used copies. Thanks for the note!
Matt, Good job reviewing the book! I particularly liked the concept of a split page for additional infornation. With the advent of all these You Tube videos, I wonder how the purchasing of books will play out? #humpy
Thanks Roman... and I think that's the million dollar question for fly tying authors. I want to eventually write a book myself, after growing this channel to a decent size and retiring from my day job. But without being a big name in the field, I don't know how lucrative being an author could be. The guys like Tom Rosenbauer, Mike Valla and Dave Hughes probably do well with their books, but it might be tough for a new guy with no pedigree in the industry. Oh well, I plan to do it for the fun if it, not to earn a living. :-)
#humpy Hey Matt, nice review :o) Can't go wrong with spiral bound. Do you have that "doorstop" of a book Fly Tyer's Benchside Reference by the same authors? Did you review or have Valla's Classic Streamer Fly Box? I have his Bucktails...Hair wings and I love that book. Keep up the good work and thank you!
Joe- I do not have Leeson and Schollmeyer's Benchside Reference, but one of the commenters mentioned that there is a lot of duplicate material between the two. And yep, I've got several of Mike Valla's books: Catskills, Dry Fly box, Streamer Fly Box and Tying the Founding Flies. All good stuff!
I really like the concept of the book but I already had the Fly Tyer's benchside reference. There is a lot of crossover between the two (same authors). Cheers
I was able to get a copy at a reasonable price back in the day. Its a great reference book and if you can get a copy reasonably Id recommend it. And of course paired with a Matt video or any other tierers out there works well.
#Humppy. I came very close to moving on to something else after you gave the price of this book! But I’m glad I didn’t and not just cu’z your giving one away. After you started showing the split page portion of the book it started looking interesting. $45. is too much for it but I will begin looking in all the used books section of the places I get book from, sooner or later one will show up. p.s. I like & am trusting your opinion on your reviews you put it out there good or bad. Keep it up my friend
Hey, I appreciate it Trent. And I agree the price is pretty steep but you might be able to find a used copy out there if you keep your eye out. As of today, someone on Amazon is selling a used one for about $30. PS- please go back and edit your comment- you have two Ps in humpy! Cheers. -Matt
Thanks Chris! It really is a solid book, but honestly if a tier doesn't already have Dave Hughes' "Essential Trout Flies" I would recommend that one first. :-) Good luck!
@@SavageFlies the only book I have is the founding flies one, that I won from one of your give aways. This one I think I would really enjoy, the spiral spine, with the split top and bottom pages, would make it very easy to navigate and have on the desk while tying. Imo That being said, the cheapest I saw it available for us Canadians was ~$66
Yeah Steven, it is a nice book, but I agree that it's a bit over-priced right now. But if they haven't dropped the price on Amazon, I guess that means it's still selling enough at this price. I could see it dropping to about $30 within the year, which would get it in line with comparable books.

Congrats GD
Congratz!
The split page format allowing the reader to look up more detailed steps without leaving the pattern is pretty clever.
Thanks Bob, and yeah it is kind of unique. (I haven't forgotten the Catskill book I'm going to send. Just haven't been to the PO in a while. :-) )

I have the book and enjoy using it but I agree there are other books that a beginning tier might get more benefit from. Thanks for the review.
I agree Chip. Not a bad one to have overall, but wouldn't be my first choice for a brand new tier.

My favorite is Skip Morris' "Fly Tying Essentials". This is my response to your earlier questions.
