- Mike Valla's 2009, "Tying Catskill-style Dry Flies" is truly a one-of-a-kind history and how-to book on everything about Catskill dry flies. If you are at all interested in classic American dry flies, or the Catskill region of New York, you should definitely consider picking up a copy of this one.

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. Thanks for stopping by.
I do volunteer work with kids running a program where I teach kids to cast and take their family to the water to teach them to catch and handle blue gills.
We strictly throw dry flies and this Catskills book could be fun for me to learn more about the area I work in a lot professionally, while increasing my skills at proven dry flies.
Thanks for reviewing this book and bringing it to our attention.
Andre- I just did the drawing and congrats; you won the book! Send me an email with your mailing address and I'll get the book in the mail to you. matt@savageflies.com
@@SavageFlies Wow! That’s outstanding. I don’t think I’ve ever won a raffle, nor anything similar. This is so cool Matt. I just told my wife and she rolled her eyes. Lol.
That said, she and I are excited to put these patterns to work out on the water with the kiddos.
@@SavageFlies Please let me know if the email went through sir. And thank you again! I look forward to the next video.
@@SavageFlies The book arrived today sir. Thank you for your kindness!
I must say Matt, I'm almost jealous of your trip. I've been behind on your videos lately, between work, summer smallmouth and a few other things. I'm not sure I can say anything that hasn't been said before, but thanks for everything that you do. From the detailed but simple videos and wonderful patterns, helpful tips for beginners and seasoned tyers, and giving gifts so that others can enjoy this obsession that is fly tying and fishing. We are much more grateful than we could ever express Matt
Wow, thank you David. This is such a kind comment and is very much appreciated. Comments and feedback like this is what keeps me going sometimes. :-)
CATSKILL!!!
I absolutely love this style of dry fly. So simple but elegant. And even tho they are "simple" they take a certain level of skill to do right.
That's one of my all time top 5 fly tying books. I go to it frequently.
With the Catskill area being the "birthplace" of American fly fishing it is definitely on my bucket list. I've even considered moving there. This book is a must have.
the Catskills have some of the most gorgeous fly fishing streams.
I agree Timothy! I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
Welcome back!
That is one terrific book, well researched & rich with history. Mike Valla has some great stories in the book about each fly & its originator, as well as subsequent changes by other tyers trying to adapt them to their own style. He learned to fish & tie from some of the best. If you love dry flies, you will love this book.
I agree Bob! That's why he's my tying mentor (though he doesn't realize it.) :-)
The Catskills style flies are fun to tie and are fish catchers. Thank you for the book review and the chance at receiving the copy provided by you! Thank you Matt I’m glad to hear your fishing trip was good!
Always a fan of the Catskill style dries, and the history of the region.
Catskills! You are my favorite fly tying guru to watch!
The Catskills have always been my favorite , the Catskill region and Adirondack Park where I fished 90% of my time in 80s, 90s and early 2000s.
It is great that you got some flyfishing R&R in the CATSKILL region of the northern Appalachian Mountains, Matt.
Tying Catskill type dry flies sounds like a great addition to the library. Thanks for the review.
Catskill flies.. what classics! I love intricate fly patterns. fun stuff!
The old flies have a classy look to them. I have enjoyed looking at them but have not tried tying one yet. This book on Catskills flies may give me the instructions I need.
It's an absolutely great book Kevin! Good luck my friend. :-)
Glad you had such a memorable vacation. May every year provide the best trip of your life whether in the Catskills or elsewhere.
Welcome back. Glad you had an awesome time. This is a great book. As I already have this book I wish good luck to all who enter. Have a great day and stay safe my friend.
Thanks for all you do Matt I hope your trip was awesome looking forward to some videos :-) love the Catskill
The "Catskills" were my old stomping grounds and I'm glad that you enjoyed your time you spent there. All of the streams get a lot of pressure, if you seek out some of the less popular or well known streams I think you'll get the true flavor of what the Catskills is all about. Tight lines & I really enjoy your videos, THANK YOU...
Catskill. glad you had a great time. I've never fished them but have always been fascinated with what I've read. Thanks Matt.
Catskill flies are amongst my favourite!!!
This Catskill- style Dry Flies book sounds & looks like a great book to have. Also sounds like you had a great time too. I bought a box of flies from Sisters, Oregon when I was living in Oregon and just gave the box to a friend of mine for his 70th birthday. He loved it and it was good to see a real big smile on his face.
That's a great story Maurice! And yes, I had a great time fishing last week. Lots of great rivers in the Catskills. :-)
I am a trout fishing trucker, carry my tying and fishing gear in my truck. I have fished Texas, NM, CO, Wy, UT, MT, PA so far. Looking forward to the Catskills and the driftless region in Iowa and MN. Thanks for your videos, I like the explanations of materials and how to use them!!!
Thank you! And the Driftless region is on my to-do list as well. And really anywhere in Colorado or Wyoming. :-)
Catskill flys do well about anywhere I think!! Thanks Matt!!
That book actually looks pretty awesome. It’s fascinating how the fly fishing hobby tries to hold on to its history so much. Catskill
Thanks Matt for information on the Catskills/flies. I hear the excitement in your voice and can’t wait to hear/see more on your trip.
It was a blast Brian! It's going to take me a while to get through the footage but I've got some I'm working on. :-)
Glad to hear that your trip to the Catskills went well.
This is an excellent video as they all are. You have driven me back to flytying and flyfishing, and I thank you. Excellent as usual. Why are you not my neighbor, LOL. Catskill
Another great area in New York, where the Appalachians enter the state, the plateau becomes much higher than in the west, reaching it
s culmination in the catskills. I am not sure how you can put in all the time at work and still have the energy to put together all these great videos.
Growing up in western NY in Ithace and later Lockport experiencing the salmon runs in the fall and watching one lone flycatcher walking up the middle of 18 mile creek at Olcott with a stringer full salmon I really felt that I needed to learn how to flyfish, but finally picking up the sport and craft 40 years later it is a shame that I more than likely never get a chance to fish the Catskills. But the joy of fishing with family and friends, all of the places maybe I might get a chance .
I’ve never been to the Catskills before. Glad you enjoyed your trip. So much fishing, so little time!
Congratulations Matt glad you had a great time in the Catskills !
Thanks Justin! I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
@@SavageFlies no worries matt loving the channel
Before the railroads were completed into the Catskills, fishing clubs fished here in the Poconos ; particularly the Brodhead Creek.A few of the Catskill patterns like the Quill Gordon and Red Quill are used here. The Brodhead is where James Leisenring and his wet patterns as well as the " Leisenring Lift" was born.
Sounds like a Catskill book that should be on my shelf
Love books with history in them. Enjoy your book reviews. Good luck everyone!! Catskill
Catskill flies! That being said, love fly tying/fishing books!
Hey Matt, Welcome home. For some reason my wife was saying just today that she wanted to visit Newfoundland. If I convince her we could drive, I bet there could be a Catskills stop on the way.
Fly fishing season in the Catskills opens on April 1 and continues until mid-October. Catskill Mountain waters have gained fame as the birthplace of American fly fishing, and to this day our waterways are home to some of the best fly fishing in the Northeast, visited by avid anglers from around the world. Varieties of trout and bass thrive in the peaceful environment of pristine mountains and clear, cold water. From the area’s vast reservoirs that compose the New York City Watershed, to numerous lakes, rivers, streams and ponds, there is an abundance of fly fishing hotspots around Delaware County. There’s no better destination to catch some fish!
Hi Mike, it’s good to wet a line now and then. Especially if your in the Catskills.🎣✌️
Sounds like a great book. I hope you had a blast in the Catskill area. Thanks Matt.
Catskill dries are some of my favorite patterns! If I don't win it I'll def pick up a copy myself!

Another informative video Matt. It was nice to meet on the Neversink! Hope you had a great trip to the Catskills.
Thanks Will and same here! Unfortunately I won't be showing any fish-catching video from my morning on the Neversink- I was thoroughly skunked. :-) But I did salvage the afternoon with a few nice fish back on the Beaverkill that evening.
@@SavageFlies we had a pretty tough day too, at least we had a nice day on the water👍.

First review I've seen or read, so thanks for that. The Catskill school of fly tying is still to this the penultimate standard.

Matt, great book review as always. I agree with you that tying nice looking Catskill style flies does take some practice. Spent many hours on the bench tying. It was great oc- therapy to get my hands working again. Glad to hear you had a great trip fishing the Catskill area. Hope you got a chance to visit Dette's fly shop and visit the fly tying museum while you were in the area!! Have a great day and tight lines!

Hi Matt. Nice to see your back from your trip. That book is an excellent one. I like Valla’s books and I just picked up that one almost a week ago now. Good luck to all those who put in for it. Take care Matt.
Just had a session in the Catskill area as well! It's my go to fishing region so this book would be perfect!
I don’t have a Mike Valla book in my collection. This Catskill book looks like a good one to add. Thanks for the review.
I got my copy of this book a week ago from your recommendation in a previous video just before your trip. Even though I’m new to fly tying, I will say that it most definitely has been well worth its cost in the wealth of knowledge it has. Mega Thx for your book review s and certainly this is one I’ve already recommended to my fellow tiers
Glad you enjoyed your trip. The Catskills is a bucket list trip for sure
The Catskills are on my bucket list to wet a fly line. Sounds like you enjoyed your time there and experienced some tight lines.
Glad you to hear you had a great trip! Love some Catskill fly fishing.
Love love love the history of fly tying!! This book is definitely going on my birthday list! Thanks for the review Matt. Was hoping to see some videos from your trip. I am probably too old and financially limited to fish the Catskill rivers you mentioned, but I can still dream about them. Blessings from your Idaho fans.
Thank you for the book review of Catskills Dry Flies
I'm a little jealous of your Catskill fishing trip
Some of my first North American family lived in Duchess County I understand in the Catskill region.

Catskills dry flies? Yes, please. I’ve def had this on my wishlist, but hearing your explanation and praise for the region/your trip, come Thursday morning (fingers crossed for wed night) I may just purchase it outright.
Love your book reviews and the Catskills edition sounds like a winner.
Catskill dry flies hmmmm. I dont think the book would sit on my shelf. Id have it open and being used. Glad you had a great trip away Matt.
I started to look into this book, wow what a gem! Thanks for putting me onto it.
You're welcome! And from your username, I think you'll definitely like it. Make sure to watch Friday morning's video as I've got another great resource for dry flies. :-)
I am fortunate enough to have bought a house on the east branch of the Delaware river at the western edge of the Catskills a few years ago. This book would be a good addition to Nastasi and Caucci's "Hatches II" and one that a local gave me called "Catskill Rivers: Birthplace of American Fly Fishing". We rent out our place as a short term rental and I've put together a small library of fly fishing books for our guests.
Wow John, sounds like you've got a great setup there! This book would definitely be one I'd keep in your library there. :-)
Hi Matt, I've tried a few Catskill dry flies and your right they are challenging, great review.
I have recently been try to tie Catskill flys they are very tricky thanks jamie
Glad you had fun in Catskill. Hopefully you have some video to share!!
I do Mike! It's going to take a while to get through it all though, but I'll have at least a few minutes of catching fish. :-)
