On hearing the name quarter chiming clocks we remember the melodies like Westminster, Whittington's, St. Michael's, Schubert's Ave Maria and ode to joy. At the first quarter descending order of the melody notes; at second quarter first half of the melody; at third quarter second half of the melody followed by descending order of melody notes and fourth quarter full melody followed by number of hours as chord strokes on tuned set of chiming rods. Such clocks have 4 to 12 chiming rods. Some quarter chiming clocks that plays some other melodies on more than 15 bells and count the the hours on single tubular bell or coiled wire gong mark the first quarter by one strike, second quarter by two strikes, third quarter by three strikes and fourth quarter by melody followed by number of hours. Even if quartz clocks electronically imitate the above mentioned clocks they can't beat the real chimes of these types of clocks.
