I remember going to this with my Dad. I was 7 years old.we drove down from Palmerston north for it. It made a huge impact on me. Hearing those v8s reverberating between the buildings was amazing.
got to do a spin around the back of Tuakau one Friday afternoon in the Gold Commodore when I dropped off a couple of drums of fuel. Was being nosey, peaking inside, when a voice from behind asked if I wanted to go for a spin, up around the salesyards and back RIP Denny Hulme..
@@OfARisenFall got to see the Poor Sierra after its mishap, when it was back in the "shop" at Wiri, was a perk of the job, at the time, to drop off oils and fuel for these guys...
First time ive seen the race .. We had a weekend off from or formula ford championship in the south island so were hired for this race . . I was with the Ford Dealer Team working in a little escort rs1600i. . .. . We had 2 cars . . The Sierra and our Escort . . I cant even remember it raining . Our car hit somthing on the road and split the sump . . We jacked it up . changed it in about 10mins ish . . Went out again and hit somthing else . . Our fast work all in vain but thats motorsport . . . . Poor Andy Rouse was just about in tears once he got back to the pits after his wheel left the car . Thanks for sharing .
Amazing that Wellington had street racing. We came to NZ in 1996, and 97 might have been the last time it was run. I remember visiting the city when they were setting up the circuit and being amazed at just how tight some of the sections were.
If only modern racing. was like this! Wow. Exciting - different models of cars, close racing, back markers, tails hanging out around corners, amazing circuit (no chance it as pass safety these days) and A grade racers
So many ppl yap on about "parity" now days.... back then you picked the manufacturer that had a good production race car. We had somthing good, public opinion and trend has turned it into nascar and STILL nowone is happy.
I love these Wellington street races, I've been reading the book about the history of the event. Such an amazing era of motor racing and wonderful array of cars. Thanks so much for uploading this
Harvey's commodore retired with a broken oil cooler, strange that the same problem would happen at Bathurst to Brock/Moffat that same year. It let go where you see early on a couple of cars get very sideways. In this race the Volvo's power to weight ratio was superior to every other car, and Brock started the season with 370HP, by the time they got to Bathurst they would have 420HP
I recall the 88 driving down from Auckland and standing on top of the petrol pumps at a station on the quay.... to see over the fence and up the track. Great.
"Bear in mind the turbos are not supposed to be as fast off the start..." Isn't it amazing how they can just defy physics (or more impossibly, opinions in the 80s) like that!
Three hours of a neat GT race and '*poof*. We don't get to see the finish. Oh well, according to wikipedia it was Peter Brock/Allan Moffat. Thanks for posting this video. ☮
Spoiler alert, the tape must run out a bit before the end of the race, I had to google the final result but a great race to watch and how good was Longhurst in the wet
Apologies for the end. I had limited ability to record such a long event back then. I was also at the race while the VHS was recording at home. 😊. Still needs to be shared.
1:29:00 Brock's pit stop i was chuckling at the guy changing tire just in polo shirt no gloves, rattle gun rounding up all the wheel nuts, how far have we come lol. then Moffat swaps in & leaves the pits, some marshall with yellow flag is at the end of pit road dont know WTF he is doing???? i think gets his toes run over LOL
N.Z TV cameramen were certainly not as good as the Aussies!!! So poor in fact it is hard to see much detail in the cars on track, Which is what the focus is supposed to be on!
