    Thank you so much for posting this.I never got to see this race when it was televised, as I was on exercise at the time. I loved this era of Australian Touring Cars with so many brands & loads of experimentation. It's a shame that Holden had so much influence over the championship & had the rules changed to suit themselves.

    I remember back in 1986 a lot of people expected the new Group A Commodore's to walk all over the turbo's as back then most Aussie fans thought big V8 power was nigh on unbeatable. To most the only thing that held the Commodore's back in 1985 was lack of development against proven Group A winners like the BMW 635, Volvo turbo and V12 Jaguar. It came as quite a culture shock that 1986 marked the start of 7 years of turbo domination. Holden fans never did get used to turbo's mostly because Holden opted to stay with the V8 Commodore as its hero car. Of course, they didn't have the money to start trying to develop things like a Barina or even Commodore turbo so a V8 it was. And it hurt them no end because being beaten on the racetrack save the 1990 Bathurst 1000 wasn't sitting well with fans or buyers.....and then throw in that fans backed Brock first, Holden second and things weren't great for GMH.

      Kind of ironic in that sense that Holden ended up developing a V6 turbo about 3 decades later.
      Also I see your comments everywhere, some dating quite a few years back. You've got some great anecdotes

    Loved the early days of Group A. So many different brands...all with unique attributes...but in the end having similar performance.
    That was until a track special with a twin turbo charged six, 4WD AND 4WS came along to screw it all up.

      Well, I can't agree with you and your statement, the championship started to turn sour a bit with the arrival of the Cosworth Sierra in 1988, which was an ultra-dominant car like the R32 was afterwards. Nissan has just played the same game as Ford basically.

    The onboard camera was a masterstroke and how did they get it to move by itself ? remote control ?

    Channel 7 were actually incorrect with their info on the Volvo. It was a 240T, not a 242T. The 242 was never homologated for Group A racing.

    • @floody79
      @floody79 6 лет назад +4

      I'm not sure about that. Volvo officially transitioned the 242/244/245 (the last digit denoting number of doors) to simply '240' in 1986. However in different markets the same car could have been a 242 or 240 prior to that. Certainly when the Group A Volvo was homologated in '83 it was known in some markets as a 242 Turbo, and the only analogous model in Australia was the 242 GT. We could also note that two 242GT based 240 Turbos were built in Australia, one being the Australian Volvo Dealer Team #44 car driven by Bowe/Costanzo in '86 out of a roadgoing 242GT, and one being the privateer entry of Laurie Hazelton, sporadically campaigned in '86 and '87, constructed out of an ex-RedEx Trial 242GT.

      @@floody79 according to Mark Petch, the race cars were definitely 240T's and not 242's.

      The whole Volvo 240T homologation was complicated, and if truth be told more than a bit dubious.

      @@floody79 yes Marcus you are correct about the Hazelton Volvo being a 242GT ex rally car. It was officially recognised as a 240T for group A after body / panel modifications to the correct ones.

      @@Holden308 Petch has factory team built Volvo's, the Hazelton car was very different as it was engineered in Australia. When Petch got to have a good look at the car at the Muscle Car Masters a few years ago, both he and Laurie Hazelton discussed all the differences.

      It has been said by a few people that Dick Johnson 'only' needed cross ply tyres and around 100 more horsepower for the Mustang, and that would have been his car for the ENTIRE Group A era......and let's be frank, most Ford fans would prefer that generation Mustang over the Cosworth Sierra!

    28:06 This is Group A. Otherwise known as just good racing with a lot of politics and very different cars. It is also what killed the true privateer, though not necessarily. BTCC (cough). But also, BMW just had the right car for these regulations. Also, it is before Group A was killed by the true monsters which it allowed to sprout. Godzilla, Sierra, Merc C, Calibra and not to forget, the 155 from an Italian manufacturer. But this comment is already too long. So enjoy the racing while it happened.
