Absurd headlight design in Project Opel GT 1971 #29

- One of the coolest pop-up headlights in automotive history did not come without any downsides. Key words are rust / prone. Some improvements could and should be done, but still this complex structure with rubber sealed panels are (and will be in the future) places to go through thoroughly during spring and autumn maintenance.
Every time I think the worst rust has been repaired, you show us even more badly corroded metal and still, somehow, miraculously, you fix even that. You are a wizard!
Thank you Mr Watson. As you can see, the car is not yet done....there are TON of extremely rusty bits still to be fixed.. There will be another 30 episodes for sure....
Another fantastic episode, thanks for sharing with us. It is so inspiring to watch your episodes, especially that it is possible to make parts yourself with simple tools and a good imagination.
Thanks. Other option would have been spending 600€ + shipping for a repro panels used in this episode. So that is 600+ reasons to be innovative...
I I think this is the best OPEL GT ever built, incredible craftsmanship
Patience of a thousand saints this man! This car is more you than Opel at this point!
Can we also take time to appreciate the seer amount of comments this guy responds to?
Your ability to fabricate and make tools for the job at hand is amazing!
Hervorragende Arbeit. Bin gespannt auf die Lackierung.
Wow! Another masterpiece of sheet metal work. That splash guard is a piece of art, love to!
Thank you very much! But if I would do it NOW, it would improve it, just a tad !!
Watching the Magician at work. Thanks for all the great episodes so far.
Thank you for staying in for the entire show.. More episodes to come....

😎 *looking for clothes that look good on a red carpet
That was a complicated part, amazing work, so enjoyable to watch!
Always a good day when one of your videos pops up! Superb work as always.
Thanks again Bob! Have a nice weekend !
This man's work and talent is superb.
When I see the imagination to create tools for making pieces, I’m amazed!
I’ve already watched your last video three times.
Congratulations on the job.
Superb fabrication AND film-making, as always!
I admire your ability to visualise in three dimensions in order to do the stretching and shrinking and make such superb replacement panels. Of all the tasks in restoration, I think that paint stripping is the one I dislike most, whether using wire wheels and sanders or, especially, when using chemical stripper. Thank you once more and best wishes.
Thanks George. I think the most annoying part is sanding, filling, resanding, refilling before paint..Therefore that is most likely the part of this project that I will pay someone else to do it...
Have a nice weekend.
BRAVO! voted best use of FInnish plywood and scrap metal on RUclips... Thank you
That inner fender is a beast. Good work as always.
Professional approach, you can feel the hand of the master, I watch with admiration, from the 8th episode, good luck in the project
Awesome, thank you! Stay tuned til the bitter end !!
Each episode brings more and more back to life, so many improvements, this is just super work. Thank you 👍💪✌
Actually, visible and more tangible progress create new motivation for the winter.. Lets hope it will have lot of progress during the dark season....
great work, very inspiring to watch you deal with major rust issues and engineering some aspects better than when it left the factory
Always amazed by your working out of problems truly amazing ❤
A poor man has to be innovative...
@GT1900garage You are rich with God given talent
This is art, best skilled mechanic ever
Fantastic work! A joy too watch :-) Greetings from Norge :-)
I believe this was the easiest part of your restoration so far, I am also so full of it if I believe that.great segment, amazing that you have not found one piece of the car that have not had to do any repairs to as of yet.great video, great work ethic as always.just keep doing your thing.be safe.already waiting to see next adventure.😎😎😎👍👍👍
What a craftsman you are! Great work!
Thank you very much!
You make it look so easy....
...doing things twice (to the same car) kinda helps 😂
Greeting form Oz. I always look forward for to the next upload. You never cease to amaze me. Your ability to think outside the square and thought process to develop methods to work metal without dies and forms is outstanding. Nearly 900 hours to build the buckets and supporting panels for the headlights, simply a masterclass for you tubers
Keep well mate.
It's the total time! You've missed 28 episodes!
It's incredible that you made a new one from that completely decayed panel.
Another beautiful video with nice music 👍🏻🙂
It is most unlikely that anybody else in the work could accomplish that level of workmanship.
Thank you friend for sharing. Now I am waiting for the next episode. Man this little gt is lucky to have found you. You are taking care of her so well. Most others would have just parted it out. Good luck with your project.
Love the ingenious bead rolling tool!
Fantastic. I am enjoying every single second of your videos.
Yet another fantastic episode full with excellent contents and fabrication skills . ❤ From the UK .
Never saw such skills!! Man you‘re doing magic!!!
Overstatement, but I'll take it... Thanks man...
🫡 fantastic workmanship!
Appreciated !
This is art. Love following you in this crazily beautiful enterprise.
Best friday Video for having a good weekend....absolut amazing sheet metal work 🔝💯👌🏽
As always it's a pleasure to see you working on this car. Making simple but efficent tools for the sheetmetalwork, amazing! When the bodywork is ready I would say it's better then the original one. Greetings from Germany 👍👍👍!
Thank you. Yes, that is my aim. The design is such a beautiful, but some of the structural solutions are not up to the standards. I occasionally sacrify the originality for this reason...
That was a very complicated panel to fabricate. And very impressive how you did it. Big 👍
More artistry and ingenuity, matched with amazing audio selections! Hopefully, when this beauty is finished, you will take us in a driving tour of your region! Many thanks.
Thanks for the comment. In fact, I have crazy plans for what kind of video the car's first drive will be. And it really comes with great local scenery...
It's always great to see a video of the Opel GT being finessed back to life 😊
Couldn't agree more! visible progress is best progress....
Your amount of tools and fabrication skills are amazing. I watch these videos with great interest. I have the first Opel GT that arrived in Norway. It left the factory 18/12-1968. I've owned it since 2005, and I'm happy to say it's been cared well for through it's whole life.
Best regards from Norway.
Super cool. Hopefully we will see in the future, because I am making this car a roadrunner, a gran tourismo... car that is not sitting in the garage, but is made for roads.. And Norwegian roads are one that I am planning to visit.
Once again, we enjoyed the appearance of various SSTs.
Thanks for the comment, but I need you to revisit the comment. The term SST stands for:
Sales and Service Tax
Streamlined Sales Tax
Sea Surface Temperature
Super Sonic Tansport
Student Success Team
Sum of Squares Total
Statistical Software Tools
Swiss Solvency Test
Self-Service technologies
SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL ??
Structured Stream Transport
Social Studies
Site Safety Training
Samoa Standard Time
Sulphate Scale Tool
or - none of above ?
🤘😎🤘
This video made my Friday. Thanks so much. Really, an epic build of craftsmanship and a work of art.
Glad you enjoyed it! Have a nice weekend !
That little structural swoop up front is pretty funny, I didn’t notice that until now.
Hello there. Sorry, didnt quite follow..what swoop you mean?
@@GT1900garage The zig-zag strengthening dimples or beads in the bottom of the front wheel bays, I had not noticed them until now and I think they’re cute.
Aa, ok. Not sure how much stronger it gets with those, but surely they add some personality.
You are truly amazing. What a fantastic job you are doing on a cool car.
So impressive...the commitment is crazy...so many hours!! Love the way you problem solve, it's always interesting to see how you tackle complex panels.
Thank you! My original plan was to complete the car in 2000 hours.. lets see how it goes...
Great to see skills and patience improving. Good is not good enough.
Very true! More I improve the tool set in my garage, and also in my head...I need to revisit my previous repairs....
You have a great ability to decode 3D form into seperate pieces then build them back up.
Yeah - the darned detail work that sits in every corner. Back then in the 80s when I worked with GTs I'd admired the over all form. But I also cursed on the stupid amount of silly details. Many would not bother with it. Just put some plain sheetmetal in, cut some holes ... and that was it. I really admire your work. Wish I had the time and quality of workmanship. Thanks for showing !
Thanks for the comment. Yes, this is my first Opel and obviously first GT that I have even look closely. More I study the car, more I understand why they are so rare nowadays. Sooo many stupid rust traps and hidden gems to be found ....but nevertheless....a total beauty !!!
Woow....you a good carbody worker , good solutions of every parts you made 👍👍👍👍😁
Ah, I had a 73 Opel GT . I really loved that car. I had to sell it when I had a medical emergency.
Sorry to hear that. Cool cars that you once had, always stay in your memories.
I've seen almost too much in my long life, but I really like your Videos - thank you!
Wow, thank you! Pleased to have you on board. Stay in til the bitter end...
Buongiorno.
Another example of a very dedicated, very skilled metal worker which is using his time correcting the many design flaws from the Opel design bureau.
The Opel design bureau would better design small swimming pools or puddels for frogs.
Besides: remind it is based on a Kadett B chassis derivate and has the same dangerous road behavior.
More great work, beautifully presented as always. I especially enjoyed the soundtrack this week, very Kruder and Dorfmeister! Kudos brother, such a unique channel. 🙏🏼
I maintain you're one of the best fabricators on youtube. That rib former at 17:40 was genius...
Thanks Matt !!
I had to come up with another solution when my bead roller did not have enough depth to work with this piece... Poor man has to be innovative to survive....
Here I'm thinking finally you get a break. Clean up some headlight housings and you're good. Nope. I've been watching this since the beginning and I love some of your solutions to metal forming. Well done. Thanks for another great video.
I wish! As you can see in the video....there are TON of extremely rusty bits still in the car.... I have next 30 episodes full booked....
I fell in love with pop-up headlights when I was 13. Bought a 1969 Pontiac GTO when I was 17, loved the pop-up or pop-open headlights. The vacuum was a real pain though, never could get them to synchronize properly. Your work is flawless, obviously learned over many years of trial and errors AND success.
Thanks David. GTO truly had the looks.. But to be honest, I did not remember they had a popup lights ? Were those revolving lights? And actually, this is my first car project of this magnitude, so all of the things I do, it is a learning process....
@@GT1900garage yep, they rolled up for open, and when they rolled back down (closed) the covers matches the front of the grill. I may have used an early flat-black paint pen to deepen the dark black horizontal lines😎 I may have the open/close operation backwards, been 40 years😳😁
OK, I do remember seeing those, but did not remember it was a GTO 🤔. Were those in all GTOs?
@@GT1900garage No, just selected years and models. 68', 69' & 70' - someone will correct me as I don't follow the registry anymore, could be a bit off.
Love to watch you work your magic...
Thank you so much 😀 Stay tuned for more...
Impressive work!
Much appreciated...
Brilliant and inspirational work as always! I hang out for these videos :)
Thanks Gordon, appreciate your comment. Stay tuned. At least 30 more to come...
Very nice work, incredibly cool to follow 👏🏻 keep up the nice work 👍🏻
Impressive 30th episode, as are the previous 29... Kippis!
I think you're really great because you're a creative man. Although you don't have a special tool for the sheet metal.
Great editing.
Thank you...Appreciated.
Wow, amazing, doing so well 👍👍👍 You probably never will, but never drive a GT at night in snowfall. After a few meters darkness will come. 😅😅
I'm starting to wonder if this is what's called "car pron"??? 😂😂😂 Thanks for sharing!
If so,✌️😎✌️
Magnifique travail !!!!!!
Your fabrication skills are amazing!
Super video
Thank you very much! Visited again on your channel.. I really like your music.. Anything new coming up?
@@GT1900garage no sorry, I dont produce right now.
.
Never surrender!
Next level metal works in 3d dimension
Thank you, appreciated !
How you build this two panels is great cinema. Fantastic.
Thank you, appreciate your comment...This is my way to document the project. Some like it, some do not...
17.43. Genius tool
Love the build one of my favorites car is the Ople Kadett an the GT
Thanks for the comment.. What year Kadett ?
What a great job!!!
Amazing, incrível, splendid 🎉
Another interesting episode. The machine to produce the grooves is interesting. I will try to build one es well! By the way, yesterday I have taken out the engine/gearbox of my MG TF to start the bodywork. There will be quite some work. However, to date I have not found a corner that looks like your car - yet. Maybe the day will come! All the best for your future work!
Nice work
Very, very nice! Nothing more to say.
Thanks, your support appreciated..
Fantastic!
Big-big-fat thumbs up as ever.
Much much appreciated !!
Opel is a little closer to getting back on the road, and that's good
It's so interesting to watch your fabrication skills on such a complex panel, & I really admire how you innovate the use of whatever you have in the workshop when you don't have the necessary tool(s).
Keep up the great work! 👍👍
Thanks . Poor man has to be innovative...
Sensationelle Arbeit! 👏👍Bist du Karosseriebauer?
Mindblowing ! Congrats !
But the vid is MUCH too short 😢😢
Clever solutions
Good job
Thank you ! Appreciate your visit on the channel...
Hienoa seurata projektin etenemistä. Kädentaidot kohdallaan.
Kiitos paljon.
good job je suis tres imprésionner bravo
Merci beaucoup. J'apprécie votre commentaire.
👍👍👍
🤘😎🤘
Great❤
🤘😎🤘 Thanks
I think if you were going restomod with this car a fantastic engine for it would be the GMPP ecotec 2.0 turbo crate motor. It would be so much fun in this car.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, this will be slight restomod, the engine will be Opel CIH 2.2. injection. About +30 hp, and 110% of more comfortability.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the guy that sold you this car claim it was rust free. I've watched from episode one and so far the only part that hasn't been rusty is that glass and headlight lens. Love your channel, thanks for sharing.
Well, he DID say "some rust, but manageable"... so basically I am managing with the rust... so technically he was not wrong. But to be honest, for example this splash panel was covered with patch plate on top of a patch plate, and filling and other stuff on top of it....so the damage underneath was not visible even for the seller....
Jotkut tekee mitä osaa... toiset tekee mitä tahtoo.. >> Some do what they can... others do what they want.
