Meds (anti-depressants, blood pressure) may impact. Talk to your doc about timing. 6. Fluid retention (elevate your legs, compression stockings) 7. Daytime bladder habits. Hold off emptying bladder ‘just in case’

One thing I found helped was to drink more water during the day so that the urine wasn't quite as strong. I'm definitely going to try some of the other suggestions. Thank you
Hey Julie you’re right! When the urine is highly concentrated it makes the bladder irritated and causes it to contract more than otherwise! All the best!!
Thank you! Great information especially about what foods to avoid eating at dinner. And the information about how long it takes a glass of water to get to the bladder. I really appreciate you making this video for us suffering.
I researched salt intake. A small reduction in salt intake in a survey massively reduced the night urination for the participants so now I cook from raw to ensure we intake a controlled amount. It has worked.
i dont add salt to cooking , and only have salt lightly sprinkled on certain foods even have reduced salt gravy makes no difference ,mind i suppose if i did have a lot it could be worse i dont know nothing makes any sense when u have fibromyalgia
Michele please help. I am going tô toilet every hour. I work in a call centre and I have only 1 hour break. I drink tea in morning and also eat junk food. So how to stop
The caffeine and how long it stays in the system was the eye opener for me. I'll be having 1 real ground coffee when I wake. Then decaf. Let's see how that works 😊... Greetings from the Scottish Highlands x
And as someone who always looks for the silver lining 😊 now that I'll only be having 1 caffeine a day I'll be buying the best I can afford. I'd rather have 1 excellent coffee a day than half a dozen or so "ok" coffees 😊😋. Also since I stopped adding sugar I can taste if the coffee is good or mediocre lol😂
Decaf, please don't. Have you ever wondered how they take the caffeine out of the coffee? It's a chemical that you'll find in paint stripper. I'll rather have the coffee as it is. The devil you know is better than the angel you don't know!
Lovely lady , your voice is easy on the ears , you speak slowly, clearly and project your voice properly, Thank you most people don't anymore love the accent Also I've been told decafe coffee has more coffee oil in it than regular , which can effect your weight
The most effective way of reducing night time urination is to eat your high fat meal of the day several hours before going to bed. Eating carbs requires water to process those carbs (the body requires three grams of water to process every gram of carbs) and that will come back to haunt you at night. Fats doesn't require water to be processed and therefore reduces nighttime urination. So, even if you aren't a low carber do a low carb, high fat meal several hours before bedtime and eat your carbs during the day. This has worked extremely well for me, in fact it is the only thing that worked.
Drinking (sipping) hot (not warm) water as your last drink is also effective. Someone had told me this many years ago, and it actually worked. Of course, you should probably have this last drink long before going to sleep as suggested in this video, but it is reasonably effective even if done not very long before going to sleep. Thanks for the other tips (especially reduction of salty food).
If I don't consume enough water then I have other dehydration issues like kidney stones developing along with cramping in the middle of the night. And when I consume enough water to make my body happy, I'm waking multiple times. Fortunately I'm able to keep a container next to my bed which makes it very easy to relieve myself and go right back to sleep. I actually have two measuring cups. And if I have too much throughout the night, I just dumped one into the other so I always have a empty one. I only collect 8 oz of urine so I have another issue. Then the one thing that people never mention is how many hours of sleep people get. Some people might sleep 5 hours and somebody else might sleep 8 hours. So what is normal for 5 hours and what's normal for 8 hours. These are questions I've never seen the answers to
My secret is keeping my body and head REAL warm when going to sleep at night. Any coldness sensation anywhere on the body (except face) will trigger bladder activity.
I had to come back and say thank you. I watched this video yesterday and began to follow your advice immediately . I stopped my water 3 hours before bed, having begun it early. That alone allowed me to sleep without getting up. Simple, logical, and doable. I found your channel last year when I was preparing for a dropped bladder surgery, which became a full hysterectomy. I was dismayed to find the night time wake ups begin again. I realize now the stress of this pandemic year caused me to not focus on the common sense aspect (or lack of it) in what I was doing. I will be looking to you for more of the same!
I don't drink at least 4 hrs before bed and use toilet naturally during the day. Can be up many times during night. I have a rectocele and raise feet during the day and in evening but never get a night,'s sleep. Where does all the water come from? Try anything to get a night's sleep!!
Most comforting voice and elegant manner with wonderful tips. I wake up every day with killing urge, now I know the mistakes I was making and the habits I should be working on. Thank you so much Michelle for useful insights.
What a coincidence it is to watch your video. I have had problems frequently going to the toilet in the middle of the night. I have been keeping a food diary and realised that I was drinking 2 large cups of coffee a day and about 4-5 cups of tea. All of these drinks are without sugar. It was yesterday, before I saw your video that I deliberately only drank 2 cups of tea and one large coffee with my last cup of tea taken about 15.00pm in the afternoon. For once, I slept right through the night only getting up once to let the dog out. I must admit that during this time, I went to the toilet (just in case) and to allow me to sleep right through and it worked! During the day I was drinking sipping water. The same regime has been adopted today, so here goes!
I find that only drinking water helped me a lot. It didn’t seem to matter what time I took my last drink, just only drink water. I found I could sleep 7 or 8 hours uninterrupted, but never to drink tea coffee or alcohol after midday.
Excellent help and advice and straight into the information unlike some “advice” videos that go on and on telling you the benefits of what they are going to tell us but never actually seem to get round to the helpful information so I generally give up and shut off. Thank you.
It’s actually good to eat salty foods before bedtime, or a long trip- salt causes water retention and decreases urination. That’s why airlines offer salty snacks, so people don’t have to pee as much during flights.
Yes. Very, very true & works every time for me.. Salt holds water in the tissues. Only time I EVER sleep thru with no needed trip--vs 3 to 4 trips-- is after a salty meal in late evening. Excess TOTAL DAILY salt is NG so a big mistake to play with it. However, it would be interesting to strictly hold back some salt all day and take the rest of the MDR (about a teaspoon) --say a third of a teaspoon of salt ---in late evening with last small meal or snack. There is a new medicine (Noctiva, spell?) (USA) that reminds the kidney not to make much urine at night which applies to people who create more or the same total output during sleep as in the waking hours.
I wake up every 2 hours like clock-work to go pee, but I can not go for hours during the day. I'm so tired all the time and I know this is an issue. I will look at all these things you mention to see what I can change, pay attention to, and attempt to make my nights more restful!
The best video I have found about this. I can see several things I'm doing that are probably causing it. So before I freak out about my prostate, I'll give these a try. Thanks!
I do most of these. I know I am sensitive to coffee so I am going to have my one cup first thing in the morning. I am also going to practise holding onto my wee for longer during the day. Thank you.
Thank you Michelle I’ve tried so many things and recognise after hearing you that I’ve had “Woolworths (cheap variety) bladder” since I was very small. It’s been so helpful to see how constant urination has led to the issue. Im using your advice to try and stretch my capacity. Thank you
I don't drink alcohol, (never liked it) and only drink decaf beverages, (doc's orders for the last 5-ish years). Last cuppa during the week is a large mug of decaf tea round 6:30pm. I try to finish my evening meal by 8pm. At the age of 60+ I do have some bladder issues, but I find that if I poop right before bed I won't wake up till almost the same time as my alarm goes off on the morning. I guess that the bowels can put extra pressure on the bladder.
Thank you Michelle. I really appreciate your thoughtful manner. I have a dear friend who is going to find your video so helpful because what you advise certainly makes a lot of sense.
I can vouch for the effectiveness of stopping taking fluids earlier in the evening. I've been doing it for several years and it works. I have my last drink around 9.00pm, go to bed around 11.30 and midnight
@@carolinacio5697 Hi Carol. No. I almost nevetneed to pee during the night. Generally go to bed around 11 and read for maybe 30 minutes before settling down. Michelle. I cannot thank you enough. Previously, I was waking up at least 2-3 times a night and it was ruining my sleep. With a combination of not drinking after evening meal and deliberately reducing my urinations during the day, I have been able to train my brain to ignore the urge to pee during the night, and am regularly sleeping straight through. Thank you!!!!
That is wonderful news! I’m so glad to read this, you’ve done so well! Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know ... makes it all so very worthwhile 🙏
Can you please explain what you mean by ........:deliberately reducing my urinations during the day as I would like to resist the urge to go toilet in the night as I struggle to get back to sleep again Thank you
Also how do you train your brain to ignore the urge to per during the night? I thought this might put extra unhelpful pressure on the bladder? I would love to sleep thru the night though so if you could explain I would be grateful.
@@michellephysio Hello Michelle, Thank you for your excellent video. I need to watch it again. Regarding TheSway post I left two comments. Could you please answer the questions I posed to him regarding holding back from urinations & training your brain to not respond to urges to go toilet in the night. I will watch the video a few more times in the meantime. Appreciate it
Helpful to understand how ADH controls urine volume overnight in order to ignore the urge and wait till morning to urinate. Before I read about this info, I was getting up too frequently to pee. Now I can wait till morning to void. So if viewers google ADH and learn about this hormone, they also will be able to enjoy full uninterrupted sleep and wake up rested and refreshed. The concentrated urine will be darker cuz it will be less diluted volume. Truly life-changing, Pleasant Dreams everyone!

Yes dude this is beyond annoying for the past 6 months I always wake up 2 hours before my 8 hours are up, like clockwork. I then proceed to not be able to sleep for 1 hour and i feel like shit when I wake up. One day i tried to hold in my pee as much as possible, i only peed thrice that day. Had the most wonderful nights sleep i had had in ages
I injoyed the lady toke on the bladder problem I can go to the toilet 6 times in one night but in the day I can go five hours with out a wee You’s Sandy
Since listening to your advice, I am now doing all my hot water drinking during the day I have supper by 6pm have my last hot water by 7pm. It's so amazing because I'm sleeping much better now and I only wake up around 8am to pass water. My husband is really tempting me to have hot chocolate which I normally make for both of us. Now I just make one cup for him. Thank you for your help.
Thanks for sharing these tips for a better night. I tend to wake every 2 to 3 hours each night though have good retention in the day. Will implement your ideas and give feedback on the results.
Hi Lisa, I only drink loads of hot water because I can't stand cold water and also I do all the visits to the loo during the day rather than during the night xxx
Try doing five to ten minutes of squats or station bike before bed time. Five minutes sweat in exchange for 8 hours good sleep. The exercises direct water to the largest muscle groups in the body, thus reduces those going to bladder.
That works well if you have more time since elliptical excise involves both upper and lower bodies. If allocate only 5 - 7 minutes right before bed, station bike or squats works better in my experience.
Kegel exercises really helped me out in addition to a few of your good tips.. And do drink lots of fluids during the day but stop well before going to bed. Just these 2 things helped me greatly and now I might wake once during the night to urinate. Sometimes I can sleep through the entire night now. I was getting up 3 times a night before trying to deal with this issue. Honestly I think the Kegel exercise helped the most. I'm 65, Male. I think it is very nice of you to put so much thought and effort toward easy solutions to this nagging problem. Very grateful. Thanks.
Thank you! I will try your tips. For years I have had to go 4 or 5 times a night, very difficult to sleep. Your tips seem very logical and the changes seem very doable.
Best of luck Linda! Yes some changes are simple, interesting how we can assume that difficult solutions require complex solutions don't you think? All the best to you
@@xyqlz Try cutting out all beverages, only drink water. The human body is not capable of quickly processing alcohol or caffeine. Natural water needs very little processing, if any, and the body will rehydrate itself naturally so that the bladder can retain it without issue.
I had the problem of nycturia as I was in hospital, deprived from drinking beer . So I drunk about 2.5 liters mineral water a day which caused polyuria. One evening, I violated the interdiction , drunk a pint of beer and slept through the whole night. So alcohol before going to bed can save your mattres !
I had never thought of that. I've always been told to not hold it in, that it's not healthy to do that due to resulting urinary infections. Geez, we just can't win.
@@robertoh3633 I had nocturia so bad it's insistence was burning (no burning while urinating). In spite of the pandemic I went and had a urine test; it was negative. This problem is so frustrating.

Thanks. I've listened to other youtube videos for suggestions related to other possible causes with solutions. These tips were a nice addition that were not in those videos.
Stretch and train your bladder. Drink more during the day and try to store it for longer periods. Got it. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be efficient and just empty the bladder when convenient.
I literally have to go pee every 2 hours or less like clockwork so if i lay my head to sleep at 10pm, i usually have to get up 5-6x to pee. I've noticed recently how exhausted i am during the day to the point of shaking from fatigue. I know that the constant interrupted sleep is causing me to be exhausted.
I have steamed all my food for about 40 years and rarely have salt but I wake every few hours for a wee. Doctor says more than likely my age - I am 73. I am guilty of the just in case wee just before bed - well that stops tonight. Thank you for a very informative and helpful video Michelle.
I think it’s best to have that last pee, just in case, but continue on a few seconds squirting and straining to get that last bit out. It’s surprising how much more can be got rid of just by exercising the muscles a few more times after you think you are finished.
I suffer from dry mouth so I even wake up thirsty in the middle of the night so I can’t stop drinking 3 hours before bedtime. Even once a night is too much. No one has come up with a solution that works for me.
My problem is not at bedtime but, Continually Urinating throughout the Daytime ! Now being on a strict diet avoiding certain fruits, drinks, ice cream & yogurt etc. as she mentioned I have found it to help. I’m a coffee drinker, stopped only for ONE day & actually made a difference”. This video is really interesting giving info regarding times of day to do/not to do, holding urinating until necessary affects how much u can hold at night, not drinking enough during the day bladder will not expand, certain meds. And esp. finding out to wear support stocking before you start walking around !The only thing I disagree about is replacement of Decafe coffee/tea.

She is certainly correct regarding alcohol. I cut down drinking wine during the week. I sleep better and don't need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the loo anymore.
Drinking before bedtime: For me it doesn't seem to matter whether I have drank water or not before bedtime I will see have to get up 2 to 10 times through out the night to pee. In fact it has got so bad in recent years that I have a bucket in my bedroom to pee in should I need to. It is very rare that I will sleep 8 hours or more without waking up at least once. If it is bad 6 to 8 times in the space of 4 hours. In this time I don't even fall asleep. I just get an urgent urge to go pee every 20 minutes. It is frustrating.
Hey Davina that must be so frustrating for you and debilitating in terms of sleep deprivation. Have you been to your doctor about this and have you tried bladder retraining?
@@michellephysio No, I thought it was just normal with aging and getting older. My sleep does suffer to the extent that I can't stick to one regular wake sleep cycle. Knackered my body clock I think. Your “amazing” body needs to urinate when the body is dehydrated , defecate when you are hungry and has a waste management facility next to a playground.
I like everything you said except the amount of water to drink in a day. Other doctors say 6 to 8 bottles of water is way to much but 6 to 8 oz is not enough. I just don't know. I was told to drink water warm and to take little sips. Can you look into this please. Thank you. I just came out of Blatter surgery and I looking for the best way to heal.
I have found that drinking carbonated water increases my need to urinate. It helps settle my stomach, so sometimes it is unavoidable, but I generally try to only drink it before 4pm, or avoid it all together. I've also found that brushing my teeth makes me have to urinate even though I might have just gone, so I brush my teeth about an hour before bedtime now.
I do drink a lot during the day my last meal is at 7pm and I drink two full 8 oz of water with my dinner bedtime 9pm. I can see now why I get up every 2 hrs like clock work. I just love 💧

I never had a drink in my life. I do not like coffee or tea. I drink only water and lots of it until dinner, I am very active in the daytime. I do not eat anything after dinner even water. My feet are elevated at night watching TV. I urinate normally in the daytime. I do not crave sweets. I do not put salt on anything I eat. Oatmeal and fruit for breakfast. salads for lunch and dinner with a little protean. I snack on lots of fruits and vegetables, but nothing after my early dinner. I still get up every 1.5 to 2 hours at night to urinate, and on occasion I wet the bed. My doctor has given me two pills to shrink my prostate for a year now and it does not help. My yearly blood work physicals always show I am very healthy. This problem started about 5 years ago. Please give me any advice to help me. Thank you,
@John M. Peterson unfortunately, I’m unable to give individual medical advice. Many factors can come into play with nighttime bladder frequency. It can even be impacted by how frequently the bladder is emptied during the daytime, medications, the amount of fluid being consumed during the day and other factors too. Seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist may be able to assist you with bladder training if that is what’s required and speak with your doctor about your tight time bladder frequency too. All the best!🙏

I researched salt intake. A small reduction in salt intake in a survey massively reduced the night urination for the participants so now I cook from raw to ensure we intake a controlled amount. It has worked.
Interesting info thanks so much Ian!
Nice advice coz a lot salt it can maintain the water
i dont add salt to cooking , and only have salt lightly sprinkled on certain foods even have reduced salt gravy makes no difference ,mind i suppose if i did have a lot it could be worse i dont know nothing makes any sense when u have fibromyalgia
Thank you for sharing. No more salty snacks at night!

I practiced some of your therapies and they were working .You are worth following.
I go every 1 1/2 hrs at night. I don’t drink or smoke I take nurofen pain killers good information
I'll try that.
What about protein?
Absolutely correct. A high fat meal will make you sleep without getting up.
Drinking (sipping) hot (not warm) water as your last drink is also effective. Someone had told me this many years ago, and it actually worked. Of course, you should probably have this last drink long before going to sleep as suggested in this video, but it is reasonably effective even if done not very long before going to sleep. Thanks for the other tips (especially reduction of salty food).
is 1 hour long (as hot drink) before sleep will enough??
@@kishanrajoriya2314 I suppose so, if you do not eat anything else after that.
How does this work?
This resonates with me. Trying it tonight
My experience too, especially keeping the back covered.
Me too i have experieced this
Yes, I've experienced this too, it's tough when it's hot and you have the AC on.
Did you figure it out?
I had no idea that the fluid intake would have effect so many hours on. Really helpful advice. Thank you

It’s actually good to eat salty foods before bedtime, or a long trip- salt causes water retention and decreases urination. That’s why airlines offer salty snacks, so people don’t have to pee as much during flights.
Where did you get this idea from?
Yes this truth !

You need to drink water after every meal to stay hydrated. Not going pee when needed will weaken your bladder and you will have to go pee more often.

How about the elliptical?

Me too tired of waking up tired.
Great information. I'm one of those who does the "just in case" scenario. I have a bathroom in a high traffic area and I think I've there is also a psychological aspect to this, i.e., See the bathroom. Enter. Just in case...
Very well thought out and presented. I'm going to try these recommendations immediately. Thanks!
I found elevating my legs in the afternoon helped 👍
Yours is very VERY effective advice! Thank you!
14 months into this ,I was misdiagnosed with OAB, didn't respond to bladder meds, so my urologist installed a bladder device well 3 months after that I'm still urinating my life away, Got a new rep from the bladder device company and she said you have nocturnal polyuria and said I was misdiagnosed..I'm not functioning, I stop drinking at 4 pm.,still pee all night long..I only drink water these days, was given nocdurna medicine and still pee 4 times at night..Praying for Hope and Relief.
I stop drinking water at 6pm have never drunk alcohol, don’t eat after 7.30 and yet get up 3 - 10 times through the night, I have full pees each time, where does all the liquid come from. Have done pelvic floor exercises since 26yrs of age after my second child. I do elevate legs at night. The only time my feet get swollen is really hot weather, can you help me any further. Use the loo normally in the daytime
O am the se as the above lady and I always seem to have a bad stomach every day
This is me as well
Yes, me too… it makes no difference. Still
Up 4-6 times every night and full pee every time.
hey....if you re still having nocturea. there must have been bladder infection or related to prostad gland infection......so its better to consult a doctor .......
@@bijitdas208 thank you x
Day time bladder control training makes sense thank you
I get this a lot. I wake up desperate to pee and go, but I’m awake during the night. I’ve even peed before bed, that didn’t help.
Gosh I am doing everything wrong, I am up at least 5-6 times a night and am worn out. Thanks so much I am starting your ideas straight. Cheers from New Zealand
@Pamela Jackson Great to read New Zealand! Thank you! Hope this information helps you. All the best! 🙏 ❤️
Taking Varuna supplement is also good. I’ve had great results, and the benefits for overactive bladder, prostate and other issues, are also beneficial. Revers tea, during the day, of course, is also good.
@Maria R - I've never heard of Varian. What is it?
I gave this video thumbs up. I have been suffering symptoms from fibroid tumors which were worsened by PTSD and insomnia so although I'm almost 59 I hope you 59 in July it's still has his terrible sensation is if I'm pregnant with twins I've never been pregnant it's just I have over 25 for tumors from stress anxiety symptoms worse. I lost 40 pounds I gained from the trauma and it feels amazing to not have to carry that around I am not drinking alcohol I am not drinking past 7 PM I have my coffee first thing in the morning if there's anything else you can think of please let me know thanks for such a fantastic RUclips channel
Hi Suzannah, do you suffer IBS too (bloating, abdo discomfort or gas) later in your day?
@@michellephysio I think all day you can be problems with all the above are also having a go to the bathroom and pee and I can't tell if I have to pee a lot or a little on some homes it's just so slow I know it's probably from the fibroids years of them crowding the bladder to the point of almost collapse etc
@@michellephysio yes Sometimes but it can be all day
My cutoff time to stop drinking fluids is between 1:30-2pm is the best way.
That is ridiculous, you would just end up really dehydrated by bedtime.
I began by thinking this isn't helpful to me as I don't do any of the things mentioned,so I thought I was stuck with getting up 4 or 5 times a night. Then you mentioned not drinking enough during the day and that is me.I have never drank a lot of liquids, typically I have a cup of tea with breakfast and one after tea.In the evening I may have a soft drink which I drink over a couple of hours. So it looks as if I need to change the habit of a life time and force down that water. Thanks for the tip.
Yes Wendy you got it - plus the soft drink at night is carbonated abs hence a bladder irritant too, isn’t it tough ... the things you enjoy!
@@michellephysio So nice of you to reply.Trying to drink more water but only managed one small bottle a day so far but no soft drinks.Thank you.
